Intriguing concept - and a great way to filter adults out of the story so that the teens can take over the running of the show.
Although I liked it the plotting was a bit too pat - the characters had no real failures to overcome. And their pasts did not impinge upon the plot overly except to give them some sneaky insights. I believe this might be due to the tight plotting - the story races along - but some meandering, getting lost, and then finding the way forward would make for a more interesting tale.
This is YA but I do believe that greater depth to the characters and their troubled pasts should trump fast paced easy reads.
I’d be interested to see how a tween might experience this book. I intend to experiment on my son. Though I’m happy if he goes through his teen years with few try fail cycles - but that’s because he’s learnt how to avoid them from his reading.
This was my introduction to this series and it was a good one. I enjoyed the characters, the tech was also intriguing. The aliens were detailed and fit well with the story. I am glad of the extra backstory added near the end, it gave a bit of good closure that was useful. I enjoyed this book a lot and recommend it.
