Dear Freida,

At this point it’s not solely you nor me… it’s both of us.

As part of Amazon Alibi Collection, you have come to us with a short novella following Talia Kemper who is on Death Row for murdering her husband, but she didn’t do it, and she has an alibi. All through her protests no one believes her but one day in the visiting area she sees a man who looks exactly like her supposed dead husband. What in the tomfoolery is going on eh!?

For 73 pages you gave us your expertise formula of trying to ignite unsurety and pure confusedness and boy did you succeed. You gave us phlegm, Pat the Rat and made it abundantly clear that Talia is not the one to be cheated on and is extremely insecure.

And that’s it. It wasn’t overly exciting, thrilling or had me racing to get to the end pages as quickly as possible. But it was tolerable and of course always easy to read so I must give you your kudos for that.

As for that epilogue… huh!?

Forever in your chokehold
Laura 🤍

Huge thanks to Amazon Original Stories for the eARC via Netgalley 💌

Okay, so I just finished Death Row by Freida McFadden and honestly... what did I even read?? Like, I'm still trying to piece together the plot and all I got was a big ol’ mess of confusion and half-baked ideas.

The story had potential—yeah, the whole "murderess who might not have killed her husband" vibe? Cool, could’ve been a thriller banger. But instead, it felt like I got shoved through a tunnel with no exit. The pacing was way too fast, like Freida sprinted through scenes and forgot to let anything actually sink in.

The ending? Oh no. It just died on me. No closure, no payoff, just a big “wtf” moment that left me staring at my screen like I missed a page—or five. It was so rushed that characters barely had time to exist, let alone develop, and all those juicy twists? They felt slapped on last minute.

Honestly, it felt like Freida was in a hurry to check off another story instead of crafting something satisfying. I didn’t hate it, but I also don’t know why it exists.

If you want a thriller with layers, suspense, and a killer ending—this ain’t it. But hey, if you wanna waste 30 minutes on a confusing mess that leaves you questioning your life choices, sure, give it a shot.

2 stars because confusion is real but at least it was short.
Don’t ask me to explain it. I’m still lost.

I love it so much omggg

My only problem is that I think the epilogue "muddies" the whole meaning of the book and what happens, it made it more confusing.

This was the dumbest thing I’ve ever read in my entire 20 years of living.

I fear there is no hope for me and Freida’s books. We’re stuck in a toxic relationship and I keep reading them even when I say I’m done. I don’t learn my lesson. 😔✋

Okay, this one was so interesting !!🦦
Really loved the concept and the dual timeline pov really delivered here. I felt like it made the story more captivating, it added a certain depth to it.
My only complaint is that everything felt kind of rushed. I think I would’ve enjoyed it even more if it was longer (I don’t necessarily mean like a full book, tho one can only imagine what a good book it could have been, just maybe a little longer than what we got). But the plot was really good, the execution was well done (really liked that ending). I just felt like everything was going in the right direction, Freida really did a good job here. 🦦✨

This book said “you’re confused? good.” Then ended💀
70 pages of ???!? and I still don’t know what just happened. This is why I don’t read novellas, there’s never enough time for my brain cell to catch up.

I hope freida knows that it’s okay to take a vacation.

In a Nutshell: A short psychological drama about a woman on death row. Unreliable narrator, but not in the way you would expect. A fast read, but shouldn’t be read too fast lest you miss the clues. A clever story with a slightly confusing ending that makes brilliant sense once you ponder over it. A great start to the Alibis collection.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview: (This preview doesn’t do justice to the plot. But I am keeping this vague as this story is best discovered by going in blind. The GR blurb reveals too much as usual.)
Talia Kemper is on death row for murdering her husband Noel. Despite proclaiming her innocence vehemently (she has a rock-solid alibi after all!), no one believes her. Her last hope is her final appeal for clemency, because if that is rejected, she has just two weeks for her execution by lethal injection. As she waits for him, she goes into flashback, telling us about her time with Noel. Can we really trust Talia’s narration? We all know not to trust thriller leads, right?
The story comes to us in Talia’s first-person perspective coming from the two timelines of ‘Before’ and ‘Now’.
This is the first standalone story in the 'Alibis’ series, described on Amazon as “stories about lies, truth, and deception. It’s just a matter of what you can get away with.”
‘Death Row’ is a clever tale, probably too clever for its own good because readers are definitely going to be divided over the ending.
Woohoos:
💉 Talia and Noel – such interesting grey characters that you never know whose side to take.
💉 The use of the first-person POV for Talia. Very smart, as we don’t know if she is unreliable or genuine, all the more as she gives both positive and negative vibes.
💉 The reveals. I constantly swerved in my opinion about Talia’s guilt or lack thereof. And whatever little guesses I could make were all proven incorrect by the end.
💉 The clever storytelling that leaves so much to our imagination! There are many clues about what’s happening, but these make sense only after the final reveal. Quite a surprise to the otherwise typical-thriller narrative.
💉 The smart use of the Before and After timeline for such a short story. Works excellently to give us the complete picture.
💉 The pacing – quick and steady from start to end. No dragging.
💉 The ending. I took a long time to make up my mind on how I felt about this, but I finally decided that I liked it.
IDKs:
I can't think of any major negatives that affected my enjoyment. As this is not a full-length thriller, character depth is sacrificed. But for a short story, it does one heck of a job.
However, I have to dock off some points for the ending. I still think it is brilliant, but it is also a bit confusing. I mulled over it for at least 30 minutes after I was done with the story. (Considering that the story itself took me 30-35 minutes to read, this was quite a long time for reflection.) Once I cracked the code (I hope I got it right!), the interim clues made a whole lot of sense and I was gobsmacked at how I had been hoodwinked by the author. Nicely done!
Though the story is fast-paced (probably too much so), I recommend going slightly slower and paying attention to everything that’s happening, whether in the foreground or background. There are some hints here and there that make sense only in retrospect. Plus, there's a lot of reading between the lines. Better if you focus from the start. (Or be willing to do a quick reread to see what clues you missed.)
Definitely recommended, but caveat lector: If you prefer everything to be spelt out clearly in the fiction you read, this story might not work for you. It relies a lot on the unsaid, and this factor can go either way.
4 stars.
This standalone story is a part of the ‘Alibis’ collection, and is currently available free to Amazon Prime subscribers.
Well, first of all, this is a well-developed, smart concept with a classic WTH ending—pure McFadden style!
The only thing that bugged me a bit was how similar the concept felt to Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie series on FX (thankfully, not the entire plot).
Without giving too much away, here’s a brief synopsis:
Talia Kemler is on death row for the murder of her husband, despite having an airtight alibi. Prosecutors believed she orchestrated the killing before leaving the scene. But Talia insists she’s innocent. Her appeal has been denied, and the clock is ticking toward execution day.
To make things even more surreal, the prison chaplain who visits her is a carbon copy of her supposedly dead husband.
How is that possible? If he’s alive, why is she on death row?
Can she prove her innocence before it’s too late—or is this a twisted, vengeful plan by her husband to get rid of her?
As with any smart McFadden thriller, expect the unexpected!
The concept is clever, the writing strong, and the execution tight. Honestly, I wish it were a longer novella!
But let’s cut some slack to our queen of unpredictable twists—the kind you never see coming, even from a mile away. She’s already released two great thrillers this year, and The Tenant became one of my favorites.
I can’t wait to dive into her next book, The Intruder, coming out October 7th!
Yes, she’s an absolute writing machine! I adore her twisty, creative, and sarcastic mind—and I’m so thankful for her books. But I also hope she’s getting enough rest and vacation time to relax that brilliant, overthinking brain of hers!
A Thrilling, fast read!
This story was a free bonus story on Amazon Prime’s First Reads for the month of May, 2025. It is also Book #1 of 6 in the Alibis Collection. And I must say, that if all the books in the Alibis collection are as good as this one, then I cannot wait to read them all!
This story starts off with Talia Kemper on death row for murdering her husband, Noel. While in prison, Talia keeps picturing her husband in her dreams, and she thinks she even sees him during visiting hours. But how can he be visiting in the prison if he’s dead, and she’s on death row accused of his murder?
This short story has Before and Present Day chapters that were enjoyable and quick to read. I couldn’t wait to see how this story ended!
I highly recommend this short story that you can read in one sitting, especially if you are a McFadden fan!!
This felt darker and more sad to me than what Freida normally writes, but I really enjoyed it. There was a lot going on for a short story and it all came together so well.
It looks like this is going to be a series with multiple books, can’t wait to read the others!
Thank you to Amazon first reads for this free advance copy.
An excellent novella with deliciously dark twists.
One sit read and a helluva ride.
Super entertaining, incredibly well written and the twist was perfection. Its incredible McFadden could tie up a short story so exquisitely.
“When you look into the eyes of the love of your life, you know it”……..👀
I didn’t hate it… but I didn’t love it either. It kind of sits in that weird middle zone for me — the concept was there, but it didn’t fully land.
I always enjoy dual timelines, and the past/present POVs were a highlight for me! 🕰️🧠 It gave the story a layered feel that kept me interested.
The actual plot? Super intriguing. A great setup with all the psychological thriller potential — but the pacing was way too fast. 🏃🏾‍♀️💨 Everything felt rushed, like we were sprinting through what should’ve been a slow-burn unraveling.
Just when I started getting invested… it ended. No real time for the twists to breathe or for the characters to fully develop. 😩⛓️ It felt like it was over before it really began. Also the ending left me more confused than anything, so there’s that…🤔
Still, I’ll always respect Freida for her wild plots and ability to hook me with a single chapter. Even when a story doesn’t hit as hard, she always delivers something entertaining.
Would I recommend it? Yeah, if you’re in the mood for a quick, one-sitting thriller. Just don’t expect the layered chaos of some of her other notable books🩸⚖️⏳🗝️⪓
What a nice surprise to find this as an option for Amazon first reads! Downloaded and read it by lunch of course. This one does get a little confusing but my interpretation is more so along the lines of the butterfly effect! But it’s a quick and engaging read that I would easily pick up again.
Solid 4 stars, since it was a short story I wish there was more because it was really good. I finished it in an hour, no matter how hard I tried to guess what would happen I was so wrong. Kept wanting to know what was happening next!
I was confused by the epilogue on what was happening, since I couldn’t figure out what was real and what wasn’t. After some thinking, I have assumed that Talia really did get into the car accident and passed away, and the epilogue is what her heaven is like. Since it mentioned how the beeping stopped and how weight felt like it lifted off her chest. I just feel so bad for what happened to her, but at least she is now in her forever happy place.
This is a short story from Amazon Originals Alibis Collection.
Talia Kemper is on death row for murdering her husband. But did she? The story is told in alternate chapters of past and present and it is up to the reader to sort out which parts are true and which never happened at all. Or at least not the way they are presented!
A tricky tale indeed but it keeps the reader guessing all the way to the end and then delivers another shock. I have to admit to being stunned and wondering what on earth had just happened, but a few minutes of puzzling over it and things fell into place. A very clever piece of writing and I recommend it but only for readers who do not mind being 'led down the garden path'
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
A gripping short story!
If you’re after an audio under two hours or a 70-page read, this one is perfect!
Talia Kemper sits on death row, accused of murdering her husband, Noel. Talia says she is innocent, and she even had an alibi for that night. Then, days just before she gets the needle, she thinks she sees him again.
Did she do it, and is he truly gone? And does the ending deliver a deadly twist?
Grab this $1.99 audio if you want to find out.
Cliffhanger: No
Well… that was something. I closed the final page in a state of confusion—not from suspense, but from sheer plotless nonsense. Still, I laughed. Not sure that was the goal, but here we are.
Surprisingly, I quite enjoyed Talia as a main character. The alternating present and past chapters were a nice structural choice, adding some welcome depth to an otherwise chaotic ride.
That said, this story really felt like it was begging to be a full length novel. I get that it's part of an Amazon short story collection, and I do appreciate a quick, punchy read—but in this case, the pacing was way too fast. The plot barely had time to settle before it was racing toward the end, leaving me feeling a bit whiplashed and occasionally confused.
There were also moments where the tone bordered on satire… maybe unintentionally, but the vibes were definitely there.
Still, I liked the concept. The bones of the story were solid—it just needed more room to breathe.
p.s. Cheers to mastering the fine art of hawking up phlegm like it’s a life skill, and to Pat the Rat, the true MVP of this fever dream.
