The Declaration of Interdependence -- both an enlightening creed and a passionate call to action -- was composed by David Suzuki and a team of activists and environmentalists in 1992, in recognition of the United Nations' Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This convincing statement of environmental principles progresses through three stages. First, ?This We KnowOCO places humans firmly within the community of living things that depend on biodiversity for survival We humans are but one of thirty million species weaving the thin layer of life enveloping the world.OCO The second section, ?This We Believe, OCO acknowledges that we have put the survival of the planet at risk, and then optimistically asserts that we must ?now build a new politics of hope.OCO And in the final and moving section, ?This We Resolve, OCO we are called on to embrace responsibility and to work ?for an evolution: from dominance to partnership; from fragmentation to connection; from insecurity, to interdependence.OCO In this exquisitely designed edition, produced to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the David Suzuki Foundation, the "Declaration of Interdependence" is beautifully interpreted by artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. Using imagery and icons from traditions and cultures around the world, interpreted through his dynamic Haida-Manga"
The Declaration of Interdependence is a poem penned by David Suzuki, and the ideas in it span environmentalism and our relationship with our environment. I think the poem was well written and beautifully illustrated.
The other parts consist of an essay written by David Suzuki and an afterword about the David Suzuki Foundation... so I get the impression that this book was really just printed to... increase awareness??? Not sure. The main poem was nice but I think it would have made a great poster (Note to self: buy poster).
A beautifully illustrated summary of the environmental issues facing the world today and a vision for the future of what we can do as human beings to preserve our planet.
A poetic creed grounding all living entities in a responsibility for the whole, a collective interdependence.
“At this turning point in our relationship with Earth, we work for an evolution: from dominance to partnership; from fragmentation to connection; from insecurity to interdependence”
Well that was an incredibly short read. Such an important and thought provoking piece reminding us of our place within the whole of the earth. I would recommend that anyone read this and think about what it has to say.
