Dawn DeVries Sokol is the author and designer of 12 books on doodling and art journaling, The Planner Book, The Postcard Project,Art to Start Doodling, Doodle Zen, A World of Artist Journal Pages, Year of the Doodle, The Doodle Circle, and Art Doodle Love. She has also illustrated and written a series of 3 board books (Pet Palooza™, Gibbs Smith) for children. Sokol teaches her methods and techniques through her blog (www.dawndsokol.com) and other online venues, such as Creativebug.com. Her artwork has been shown in galleries from Tempe, AZ, to Tokyo, Japan. She has been published in numerous mixed-media magazines and art books. In her Tempe studio—a mess of inks, paints, papers, and journals—she creates in hopes of inspiring others to find their creative voice.

Ta-da! It;s one-and-a-half years since I first started reading this book. It has been on my art-supplies table the whole time (it became a sort of coffee-table book). Meagan got me this quirky book--1,000 pages of art-journal pages from different artists. It's a little oversized, half-way between hard and paper back, and in full color. It is a full-immersion book, like walking through an art museum dense with paintings that are so intriguing they swallow you up. I spent a lot of time with this book at first, savoring its pages twenty or so at a time, but as I saw I was nearing the end, I had that feeling I often have with a dear book: I don't want to finish it because I don't want this experience to be over! So, it began its long dormancy on the little glass table in my alcove (sounds so much more quaint than it really is). It's a pretty book, so I enjoyed seeing it every day, about as much as I felt uncomfortable with the lack of closure. I never felt like finishing it in all this time. Until today. Sitting in the sun in the alcove after getting anxious over trying to convert to a green, online bill-payer but being in reality an anxious little paper bill-payer (waaah!) I decided it was time (much as you might for example reward yourself with a milkshake after doing your taxes...which I may actually do next weekend now that I think of it). I couldn't remember where I left off, so I started a ways back, then picked a page even further back, then picked a page even further back. It was the same experience as I had had before--total immersion and wonder at each page, then, near the end, revulsion over a few by one artist who has a possibly male name. I couldn't stand to examine them, so I just moved on.
This book is very quirky, and you have to wonder at the mental health of many of the contributors, but, hey, that's part of being an artist, right? Great idea for a book, and I would recommend it to anyone with a creative side.

i found this terribly inspirational. It was outstanding to find so much lovely art in one place and to think it came from personal journals. As I paged through it, I made notes of artists and techniques I wanted to try. I was a little disappointed I didn't know any of the artists though.

Another artist journal inspiration book to shove me along the path to creating my own illustrated journal. I liked this one and have given it as a gift to an artist-in-pause, hoping it will inspire her as it did me. Unlike the other book reviewed here with artists from around the world, you don't get information about the artists (always a thrill to see accountants and health care managers making art!) or the mediums they've used. Also, no annoying interview questions. You can just open the book and fall in anywhere. You quickly realize that people make art for many reasons. Mostly because you can't keep a geyser from doing its thing using your thumb. Also, I love any "picture book" that asks me to create stories. Good stuff.

Loved this compilation. Bought her more recent version today, as this version was unavailable. Interesting to see all the beautiful pages artists have created. Their ideas and translations. Would love someone to compile the last thirty years of this art form in chronological order. Would be interesting to see the change over time, how this movement started - who were the movers and influencers. What were the big influences. For example who first included washi tape in art journals who brought it to the community. I think one of Ludwig’s books has one page on early days. But there is a book waiting to be done for sure. 🌸

On those days when inspiration deserts me I find it helpful to pick up this book and thumb through the pages. It is so full of vivid, creative images, I find my spirit lifting and my mind begins playing with new ideas. This book is like kerosene to a fire - it turns a modest spark into a blaze. Another aspect of this book is the opportunity it provides readers who want to pursue a particular style or find out more about a particular artist. I often find myself moved to look up artists to discover more about their processes. It is an excellent addition to my studio shelves.

This book flips the script on the contents of a daily journal, diary and artist notebook! It displays 1000 pages of creative art that combines the skills of each journal author with their ability to blend paints, stamps, chalks, inks, collages, photos and any medium that suits the artist while documenting their daily life or their current art.

I was blown away on the number of high quality pages. Honestly, most pages could be framed and sold. I’ve repeatedly read this for inspiration in my artwork in the years I’ve owned it. It never gets boring. I have gifted 2 to friends.

This book provides a brief introduction about the practice of journaling, and then it jumps right in to showcase 1000 full-color art journal pages from artists all over the world. It was really inspiring to see what type of content people used, different media utilized, and the variety of page layouts. I definitely picked up on some great ideas to use in my future journaling projects.

I didn't realize this is actually a book of photos of artist's journal pages. I think I would enjoy looking at them in book format; however, I checked out an ebook, a terrible format for this kind of book. You can't see the details, which is the whole point of the work.
