Alan Sillitoe was an English writer, one of the "Angry Young Men" of the 1950s (although he, in common with most of the other writers to whom the label was applied, had never welcomed it). For more see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Sil...
Short stories are something I'm slowly working my way into so this was a bit of new ground. Having devoured SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING a few years ago and hailing from Sillitoe's home county, I rather enjoyed this. Some stories didn't quite grab me, but some hooked me from first word to last. I really admire Sillitoe's immersive writing style and uncompromisingly frank language.
