Mr. Darcy and the Enchanted Library: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
When Fitzwilliam Darcy's sister lies dying from a magical ailment, the only person who can help is Elizabeth Bennet, the powerful Librarian of the Great Library – the same woman he abandoned five years earlier.

Elizabeth can't forget Darcy's refusal to believe in her magical ability, even now that she has a griffin familiar. However, as the Librarian, duty compels her to help him. Together, they undertake a quest to the Faerie Realm to find a cure, encountering dangerous magical creatures along the way.

An even greater danger lurks in their own hearts. After their heartbreak five years earlier, can they stop themselves from falling in love all over again? And what will happen when they discover that Georgiana Darcy's illness is intertwined with a danger that threatens all of England?

Mr. Darcy and the Enchanted Library began as an interactive group writing project. In response to enthusiastic readers, the authors have revised and expanded this second chance, forced proximity romantasy based on Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice.

“Love is the enchanted dawn of every heart.” –Alphonse Marie Louis de Lamartine

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: mature teen and above due to violence, death of characters, gruesome scenes, magical creatures bent on destruction, bawdy Fae, etc. The usual in a paranormal story.
>>Angst Level: take something, have a calming drink handy, call for your salts, and have a fainting couch nearby. Yeah, it was a bit angsty… is that a word?
>>Source: purchased

“Betray yourself, and you betray all they’ve given you. Love opens doors. It doesn’t close them. When you go through it and find yourself, they’ll still be there.” –Nora Roberts, Enchanted

Take a collective of JAFF fantasy authors, lock them in a room with only bread and water, maybe a bit of wine, and the outcome is a fantasy paranormal to shake the senses. That is what happened with this story. Well, perhaps they weren’t locked in a room. And, maybe there was more than bread and water. I’m sure there was wine, maybe even lots of wine. That would explain the wedding breakfast scene.

“Do you still look at each other like you once did, back at the beginning of the story when everything was a question you were too afraid to find the answer to?” –Alethea Kontis, Enchanted

A villain in plain sight was creating havoc between two worlds. The wall between the Fae Kingdom and the human world was thinning. Otherworldly creatures bent on destruction, could penetrate and enter the human realm. What was the cause? Who was the villain? And how could the damage be repaired and the relationship between the two worlds be stabilized? The answer would fall into the hands of two people. Fitzwilliam Darcy and the Librarian. Who was this mysterious Librarian with the wealth of knowledge necessary to heal a cursed Georgiana, patch the thinning walls, and discover a dastardly plot to ruin ‘The Library’ and steal its most precious secret? I can’t say. No spoilers. Whew! Where are my salts? A LOT is going on in this story. A Lot. I still blame the wine-just saying.

“Any other brushes with insanity you haven’t thought to mention?” –Alethea Kontis, Enchanted

Entertaining to a point.

Enjoyable variation with unique magical premise with numerous unusual secondary characters. I look forward to this author's books, but honestly, I expected more and it just wasn't there.

When I actually looked at the writing by going back and actually reread the beginning (I thought I missed something, but no, it just wasn't there) I realize the writing style was disappointing with simple sentences, low angst, low character development and the development of the 'Magical World' was left more to the reader's imagination than the author's since very few things were actually described. There was little or no back story to go with anything, and even little development of the main characters -- ie -- how was a familiar bonded to a mage? Elizabeth's father told her she was a powerful mage, but that statement was never developed; the thread of bonded power between Elizabeth and Darcy -- another statement with nothing more, leaving the reader just hanging there with nothing more to try and understand why ideas were expressed, but not developed. The more I read, the more disappointed I became when even the fantasy Quest was more or less skipped over as just a scene to get over with and move on, the fantasy caracters were being and/or doing the ridiculous or disgusting -- the whole dragon/sheep scene should have been rewritten. Yes, the fairy realm is unusual, but our favorite characters spent more time in a cave stumbling along in the dark than experiencing the fae world. Again, just a scene to get through, no development.

Our favorite main characters -- Darcy was easily and constantly distracted; Elizabeth was unsure of herself, and lacking basic knowledge as the Librarian, even though she trained for years? This makes no sense.

Then the action scenes were rushed to the conclusion with more of an anticlimactic ending with little depth. Please tell me there's an expansion version in the works! Be kind, rewind.

Wonderful

In a world where magic is the norm, and many with magic bond with a spirit animal called a "familiar", Darcy is powerful and has a familiar, but ends up jilting Elizabeth when she fails to pass the test for getting her own familiar, because that would indicate that her magic is not strong. His family duty compels him to only marry a powerful mage, so he breaks Elizabeth's heart. Five years later, Elizabeth has not only proved her strong magic, but she's also been named Librarian of the Enchanted Library in Oxford, a very prestigious position. When Georgiana is attacked by a powerful spell making her sick, Darcy must beg for Elizabeth's help to find a cure for his sister. Their reunion is awkward and contentious because they both still love each other.

For a collaborative effort, this story is surprisingly smooth and cohesive. The magical situation is well explained, and the villains are nasty enough to add a lot of juicy drama. The story grabbed me right away and kept my interest. Five of these six authors are favorites of mine. I've read collaborations before where the writing was more choppy, as if the authors couldn't agree on the text. Thankfully not this time.

The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for a fun and engaging story with some great new characters.

Fine

I was less than enchanted by this collaboration. We learned of ODC's difficult past in bits and pieces, and their heartfelt confessions (which came across as a bland recitations of facts) were told to a third party. The whole romance seemed soul less to me.
I'm not a huge fan of magic based stories, and this one won't convert me.

I like the fact this book is the result of a collaborative project. Unfortunately, there have been exceptions but most of the time fantasy variations are not my cup of tea. Here I just couldn’t imagine Darcy riding a griffin. DNF with regrets.

I don't get the high rating... i made it till 40% with like 50% skipping bcs it was too repetitive. The storyline is shallow, mindset: I can bcs im privileged and rich and superficial.
The fantasy part is lacking! One moment this the other moment is total opposite!
Do not buy it, i think it's AI written, otherwise i can't explain it...

Enter a rich fantasy world with mages who has familiars and our world is connected with the fairy world. However the wall between the two worlds a crumbling and Elizabeth the Liberian of the enchanted library most try and repair it. First though she must help Mr Darcy save Georgiana from a corrupted love potion given by none other than Wickham.
Mr Darcy broke his engagement to Elizabeth 5 years ago because she was unable to summon a familiar. Both of them are still love sick but they must learn to work together as they must travel to Fairy. There is a jilted fairy princess and and egomaniac Lady Catherine at work. So the story is quite a ride

I like it

The opening chapters drew me in. However, my mind did drift off a few times as I read on, though something always happened to pull me back in.

Darcy and Elizabeth's romance was well done.

Worth waiting for

My first read of the book we've been waiting for. I purposely don't read the chapters as they're released because I'm too impatient to have a little bite and wait. A long read for today. The premise is that Darcy walked away from his engagement to Lizzy five years ago, not a spoiler as we learn that from the start. Georgiana is deathly ill, under a vile spell created by Wickham, and Darcy and every mage he's contacted are unable to help. He decides the only option is to appeal to the Librarian of the Enchanted library. There is a way but it's a dangerous one with more than Wickham doing their worst with a troll, dragons and other creatures of the fae world. It has certainly been well worth waiting for as we would expect from these talented ladies and I'll be visiting it again.

I loved this book! Although it was sad in places, as we are not sure that ODC will manage to get together, it was an engrossing read - I have done nothing else today since I started reading it.

It is ironic that I purchased this book exactly one year ago today, but only now got around to reading it; I have no idea why.

I was impressed with the fact that the book as six (!) authors, and yet you would not suspect that at all, everything is seamlessly woven together, so we get the best of all of them.

I highly recommend this book!

Proof that authorial and reader collaboration can work.

The editing of this book is so good that it reads like the work of a single author. Writers were clearly willing to hand their egos in at the door to accomplish a novel with such integrity. Romances, quests, Faerie, Elizabeth and Darcy, what more could the reader wish for, when the melding of Regency and fantasy worlds are integrated so consistently? Excellent.

Magnificent

What’s better than a magical Austenesque story written by one talented author? A magical story written by six of them combined with input from their fans. Watching this beautiful creation come to life was a truly special and inspiring experience. I’m so glad they published it and I hope they collaborate again someday soon. I loved it.

I am seldom enamoured with second chance stories, mostly because I seldom can forgive the transgression, and I’ll admit even at nearly half way I hadn’t forgiven Darcy his betrayal. But he did pay for it and how he proved himself is epic. Loved it and highly recommend it.

Fantastical but still very P&P in origin

Darcy and Elizabeth are still very much who you expect them to be but in magical and fantastical circumstances. It was a fun, light hearted read. I enjoyed it!

I expected a magical quest, with lots of fantastical elements, but I didn't expect to cry. I even laughed at one point. I was a proud contributor to the creation of this book via polls conducted by the authors. It was delightful to see it all come together. What a feat for these talented writers!

I liked this, but sometimes it felt drawn out and elongated by the multiple stories and authors. I love the idea of griffin familiars and a librarian who needs to keep knowledge and magic safe. I like the staory Georgiana gets to have and the villains are truly evil.

An interesting idea but it doesn’t get past basic world building. The story is repetitive and slow moving, with mistakes and choppiness. I like the authors’ individual works but their collaboration didn’t work.
