★★★★! The Awakening of Ivy Leavold, book 1 of 4. An erotic journey in historical setting; Julian Markham’s seduction of maiden Ivy!

“We stayed there for a long moment, me pinned against the wall, his breath against my neck, his cock barely inside of me.”

Books in Markham Hall series should be read in order:
Book 1-4: Markham Hall Series Bundle
Book 1: The Awakening of Ivy Leavold
Book 2: The Education of Ivy Leavold
Book 3: The Punishment of Ivy Leavold
Book 4: The Reclaiming of Ivy Leavold

Year 1879 y Leavold is traveling cross country to taken in by a distant relative after losing her family. Gentleman and landowner Julian Markham twice widowed under suspicious circumstances, has agreed to take her in.

And so a cat-and-mouse game of hot-cold seduction begins with a temperamental and devious Julian teasing and corrupting Ivy with dirty talk, petting, depraved parties and more all while the neighborhood is frowning and gossiping about them and Julian’s role in his wives’ deaths.

Ten words to describe Julian Markham: Charming, unpredictable, brooding, moody, conflicted, private, secretive, commanding, calculated and elusive.

Eight words to describe Ivy Leavold: Naïve, innocent, sweet, timid, smart, resourceful, curious and loyal.

The Awakening of Ivy Leavold, told from Ivy’s POV is great opening for a story with both mystery and suspense and already sizzling in sexual tension with promises of more. My one wish is for more historical authenticity, a little more era research would have made this a solid 5 star!

Up next, book 2: The Education of Ivy Leavold for the continuation of their education of Ivy!

Forbidden romance! Erotic journey! Hot-cold hero! Unfolding mystery! Promising plot!

"My soul was yours to take from the moment I met you"

description

The first edition to the Markham Hall series by Sierra Simone was a neutral read for me. Although it didn't hit all the (right) spots, it certainly was enjoyable. It made me remember my love of Historical Romance and after this, I am surely going to check out other novels in the genre.

"You are mine," he said as he began driving in faster. "You are completely mine. Only mine. Your cunt and your lips and your heart - they belong to me"

____________

The Plot
This was certainly a guilty pleasure, I flew through it and I could have easily swallowed it down in one sitting have it not been for life calling me to get off my ass for a couple of things.
The plot was captivating, it had elements of a thriller and mystery to it - so it wasn't just the romance that drew you in.

One thing, I wanted to toast the author for was her use of sexuality acceptance. Especially during 1879 - I really don't know much about the LGBTQ community in that period, however her incorporation of same sex relationships (even if just sexual) was really brave and I enjoyed reading about the encounters in the parlour the most!

description

An element that really put the rating down for me was that this novel was borderlining insta-love, and the cringey, smushy mushy parts really derailed and took away from all the sexiness. But then again, the dirty talk (especially from the male character) also got a bit weird sometimes. I guess theres just no pleasing me...

The Characters
Woooww.

I really did not like any of the main characters except for the parlour gang and Ms. Harold! Our two main protagonists were just completely dull and overly mundane for me personally. It got annoyingly apparent how much Ivy tended to over exaggerate her situation at hand Julian somehow always put the blame on her for how he wanted to fuck her

description

Lastly, don't get me wrong. I love me some unhealthy toxic as fuck obsessive love. (If it means that it get's handled well and the reader understands how this should not happen on everyday life) HOWEVER. I do NOT like me some psycho crazy girlfriend that worships the ground that the man walks on love, because that can get fucked up really quick. And not the good kind of fucked up.

Ivy Leavold is alone in the world. Orphaned long ago, her brothers gambling debts & recent death have also left her destitute. Her saviour comes in the guise of her estranged cousin's widow, Julian Markham.

Ivy's new home, Markham Hall is much like my initial reaction to the man himself; dark and unwelcoming. Although I am not a regular historical romance reader I found myself engaged in this quite quickly and though my references maybe limited their first encounter is reminiscent of that Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester with added sexual angst.

 photo A92352B9-0518-46E0-AF6A-DC62C0DCAD84_zpsxdbvkhac.gif
“I am going to try my hardest not to ruin you,” he said. “I am going to try my hardest not to touch you again, after tonight.”

Ivy maybe in a precarious position in life but she has a wildness to her which attracts, repels and conflicts Julian; he wants her but fears destroying her. For he too has his secrets and uncommon practices which soon become apparent.

Guest to Markham Hall bring with them an unwelcome direction to the story but from this we are able to gather more in the way of insight to Julien's past. Ivy is forced to question her position and feelings. Her fear of rejection escalates and rumours can no longer be ignored.

“Then what is at stake, Mr. Markham? Truly?”
He seized my waist and pulled me close against him. “My soul. Yours.”

I'm fond of both Ivy and Julien and apart from a shaky episode with the guest arrival I'm looking forward to seeing where there tale goes from here. There are jealousies and forces working against them and after Julien's ending statement they will only serve to be heightened.

“My soul was yours to take from the moment I met you, Julian.”

The Awakening of Ivy Leavold is about a young woman who finds herself living with the gorgeous, divine and somewhat mysterious, Mr Markham. It's told entirely from the heroine's perspective and is a HIGHLY EROTIC historical novel. Historicals are not my usual read but this story captivated me from the start with the characters, their story, and the perfect dose of suspense that twists seamlessly through the romance aspect of the plot.

Mr Markham is standoffish, fierce, wealthy and self assured but underneath all this, and the formidable stories that circulate about him, he has a vulnerable side that is showcased to great effect when he begins to open up to the female protagonist. He sees the darkness in her that he feels within himself which is divisive in their connection to each other and in drawing the reader into their luscious world.

Ivy is young and playful with a wonderful zest for life. Her sexual desires are fiercely exposed to herself and the reader within the arc of the story telling in both her thoughts and actions, the build up to her first orgasm is quite stunning, I could feel it and see clearly through the vivid writing and I found it to be very, VERY lovely!

The prose is elegant, atmospheric and delicate, making ALL the descriptions exquisite. The language felt authentic to a historical novel yet laced at the appropriate times with sensuous eroticism that's HIGHLY RISQUE IN NATURE, if you read this story you need to hold on to your open fictional mind. Historical in it’s narrative but pure carnal in enjoyment. I felt the pleasure of the story and highly recommend to erotic romance lovers above all others, its certainly not your average Historical.

***Note: The Awakening of Ivy Leavold is the first in a three part series and if you end up falling in love with the story and the characters, there's an added novella and they're all now conveniently available in one ebook bundle.

"I am happy to be anything you need"

This is the second historical romance/erotica series that I read by Sierra Simone and I believe it is the first one that she wrote. Thus, I already knew most of the characters from the London Lovers series and I was accustomed with the sexual freedom that all of them are enjoying when they are together.

Molly O’Flaherty’s strong character is shown in the book and the naughtiness of Silas is also obvious. If you have read the London Lovers series, you will probably know how their relationship will develop.

Anyhow, Ivy Leavold is the main female character in Markham Hall series and she is so virginal, innocent and curious that she totally ready to be corrupted by freshly windowed cousin by marriage Julian Markham.
Mr. Markham will accept Ivy in his household soon after his wife (who was Ivy’s cousin) died. Ivy has no other family, she has no money, no assets and before long she will also have no honor.
But she will have many beautiful dresses that Mr. Markham will buy for her and he will be ready to rip them off her and many new friends who are ready to teach her a few new games (not very innocent I have to say).

Many dark secrets are ready to be exposed in Markham Hall. Mr. Markham’s wives have been dying around him and maybe Ivy will lose more than her honor. Maybe she will lose her life.

Highly erotic book with a touch of mystery. Very promising. I think I will enjoy the rest of the series as well.

I love going into a book blind. All I had about this book was a recommendation that I would LOVE. It was a historical and I had to trust. I will admit that I was leery but I trusted the source. I don't read Historicals, but every now and then, you just need to go outside of your comfort zone and take a chance. Well guess what, this book was AWESOME!!

 photo The Awakening of Ivy_zpsapryupke.jpg

This book was mysterious, erotic and extremely well written. The storytelling was emotional and deep. These two unlikely people come together out of tragedy and discover they are quite similar in nature. It’s an awakening and discovering of need, desire and submission.

Mr. Markham was dreamy, sensual, mysterious, captivating, dominant, mesmerizing, sexy, handsome.......(I may be little infatuated). The minute he showed up, I was enthralled. He had an air about him that sucked me in and I wanted to know all about this charismatic gentlemen.

Ivy Leavold was penniless, homeless and had no family except for her dead cousin's husband. While the death of Ivy's cousin was shrouded with doubt, Mr. Markham graciously extended his home to Ivy and was invited to stay. She was grateful but was not use to charity. She was her own woman. Upon meeting Mr. Markham, Ivy's life would forever change.

The "who killed Ivy's cousin" fueled the story. It created a mystery shrouded with lust. Mr. Markham and Ivy's longing and desire fanned the flames and then their sexual chemistry exploded their story. The sexual proclivities of the book were enticing, mesmerizing and deviant.

In case I didn't relay my thoughts properly - This Book is Fantastic and Wickedly Sexy!!! The writer and her magically beautiful words will completely captivate you.

Thank you Irene for introducting me to this wonderful series and author!! xoxo-

Ivy Leavhold arrives at Markham Hall as a solitary and independent woman but Ivy's passion for Mr. Markham ignites a fire that cannot be extinguished.

"A square jaw, straight nose, clear green eyes. Dark stubble and tousled hair told me that he'd been traveling, but the silk waistcoat and well-worn riding boots told me that he was a gentleman."

In book one, the author takes you on a journey to Markham Hall. As a reader, you can feel underlying emotion of darkness that clouds Mr. Markham's heart and his past. While he is incredibly swoonworthy, Ivy is a strong and likeable heroine. As the plot tension rises due to suspicions surrounding the mystery of Mr. Markham's previous wives, the connection between Ivy and Julian escalates to a boiling point.

"His strength came not from his station in life or his wealth, but from something else. His physicality? His self-assurance? Whatever it was, it was impossibly alluring. Captivating."

I will immediately continue with books two and three of this erotic historical romance.

While I don't normally read historical, The Awakening of Ivy Leavold has been one of the best alpha billionaire books I've come across to date. With fluid language and gorgeous imagery, the story is fraught with tension, and the level of sensuality that Simone brings to this time period takes a very talented writer. While the characters and mood are reminiscent of Jane Eyre, the sexual situations bring to mind Anne Rice's Claiming of Sleeping Beauty. I'm anxiously waiting to see what's next from this debut author.

This has definitely got that Jane Eyre vibe and I adore that. And while it is one of my favorite classics I’m sure this will be far more enjoyable. Mostly because my mind is 95% smut.

Straight forward and to the point, my kind of man. - “I told you not to sir me, at least not now.” -Hmm, does that hold the kind of promise I hope it does?

I see we’re combining a little bit of Rebecca into the plot line. I dig the intrigue!

She’s wild and free and he doesn’t want to stifle her in an age where no woman was afforded such.

That game of blinds man bluff was steamy af!

It ended in a bit of a whodunnit with all fingers pointing in one direction but I bet there’s more than meets the eye. Plus, even though Ivy has spunk she’s still a bit of doormat when it comes to her libido. She’ll pretty much forget everything she’s been told in exchange for an orgasm at the hands of Mr. Markham.

A quick and very steamy erotica

*Please note that this is part of a series. The novel does end with a cliffhanger, leaving some loose ends for future installments.*

Following the tragic death of her beloved brother, Ivy finds herself in a difficult situation, with no place to call home. Fortunately, her cousin's widower, Julian Markham, has kindly extended an offer to shelter her. However, as Ivy becomes more acquainted with Julian, she can't help but notice his dark and commanding allure, which exudes an air of mystery and intrigue. However, there is the unsettling rumor that Julian may have played a role in her cousin's untimely death. Ivy is now left with a gnawing sense of doubt, struggling to decide whether or not she can trust Julian.

I devoured this in just a couple of hours and couldn't get enough of all the steamy scenes and exciting parlor games. The sprinkle of mystery added an extra layer of excitement. However, I couldn't help but feel that the characters, especially Ivy's, could have been developed further. A hobby or stronger connection with the secondary characters would have added more depth to the story. Despite this, I still found the book to be a very entertaining read and I'm eager to continue with the rest of the series. For anyone who enjoys short and steamy novels, give this series a try!

***Thank you to NetGalley, Sierra Simone, Dreamscape Select, and No Bird Press LLC for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

"I had become a creature of needs...I'm accustomed to getting what I want. And I want you."

I love historicals, but when you pair it up with erotica, oh its even better and I'm one happy girl!

Ivy Leavold is an unwed orphan who finds herself without money and family and left in the care of the elusive, mysterious Mr. Markham. The chemistry between these two is beyond hot and they find themselves being pulled to one another. Ivy is very virginal and naive and Mr. Markham slowly awakens dark sensual desires and needs within her. There is even a bit of suspense and mystery nestled within the story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

This was my first Sierra Simone book and it was written beautifully. I can't wait to read the others in the series.

Julian Markham

My Mini Playlist
Bring Me To Life -Evanescence

Undisclosed Desires - Muse
Inevitable - Amberlin
If I Die Young - The Band Perry
Born To Die - Lana Del Rey

This was my first time dabbling in the genre of historical romance (definitely NOT my last time); I also made a delightful discovery of an author I am so glad to have found.

The blurb gives a sort and sweet synopsis of the book so I'll just go on to my review... :)

So Ivy, our leading lady, has had shit luck being orphaned and left penniless..

And then *POOF* she gets to crash with her dead cousin's widower who happens to be extremely hot and wealthy..

Do they hit it off..? HMM LET'S SEE SHALL WE

Seems Mr.Markham has some pretty interesting tastes hmm..? *red flag*

Seems this fool think he can keep them secrets HMM..? *RED FLAG*

SEEMS BY THE END OF THE BOOK MR.MARKHAM DOESN'T WASTE ANY TIME HMMMMM..????? *RED FRICKIN FLAG!!!!*

This story is filled with a lot of steamy scenes that leave you gasping for air while trying to figure out why you feel guilty for indulging in something so hot that you keep on having to look around where you're sitting to ensure nobody is watching you as you succumb to the temptation of imagining yourself in Ivy's shoes. Damn, this bitch is lucky AF.
Sierra Simone has made my list of to-watch-for authors as she skillfully encompasses the passion of her characters, while describing a setting that leaves her audiences with a realistic and accurate portrayal of life in the 16th century with all the nosy townspeople, gloomy surroundings, and the skeletons that lurk in the closet of the male lead.

Looking for an intensely erotic and modern short read that has the awesome elements of Gothic lit.?
Here it is folks, and I approve :)

SO FUCKING GOOD!!! http://amzn.to/1u6OQvH

So I don’t do Historical Romance. Ever. Half the time, I can’t figure out what the characters are saying and it feels cheesy to me. In fact, I really didn’t read Romance in general until a few years ago, because of the cheese factor I had found in Historical. Guess what? The Awakening of Ivy Leavold has changed my mind. I was wrong about Historical Romance, apparently, because this book is FUCKING HOT!

I think what got me was that this book didn’t feel historical. Yes, it’s set in the 1800’s and there are some old-fashioned terms in it, but in reality this story could be told in any century and it would still be scorching hot. I absolutely loved every freaking line in this book. I have half of it highlighted, and if you pay attention to our Facebook page, you’ve probably seen some of the quotes posted from this particular book.

“I wanted you from the moment I saw you,” he growled as he thrust into me viciously, repeatedly. “I wanted you like this, your virgin cunt mine and mine alone. I wanted to feel you come around me. I wanted to come deep inside you, to mark you as mine.”

I loved that the period that this story was told in didn’t hinder the story. I was so worried I was going to get caught up in the lingo that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the story but that so wasn’t the case. The attraction between Julian and Ivy just felt right… I enjoyed how free and strong Ivy was. Julian struck me as a passionate man, wanting to do right but not being able to help himself. And let me just say… their first time… holy crap on a cracker… I think I want to time travel back to the 1800’s and find Julian pronto.

Sex aside, this book also gives us a delicious mystery. Ivy’s cousin is dead and she has suspicions on who may be at fault for her death, and fears for her own safety. There’s more than one suspect but I have a sneaking suspicion on who may have done it. I love that Sierra Simone gave us delicious sex and an intriguing plot; both kept me wanting more. Her writing is flawless, every word a tease that left me begging for more. I’m sad I’m done with the first book, and I can’t wait to pick up the next one… I hear it’s even more scandalous! 5 stars!

5 Stars – Suspenseful, Seductive and Engrossing

First off I need to say, that I don’t read historical romance…usually. It’s just not a type of book I usually enjoy; however there are always exceptions to every rule. The Awakening of Ivy Leavold is one of those brilliant exceptions. Sierra Simone gives us a story that is the exception. Rich, decadent, suspenseful, seductive, risqué, and fraught with suspected danger it’s a spectacular read. After being told by friends I trust implicitly that this book was fabulous, I took the plunge. I was hooked from the very first chapter. I was fascinated with the characters and the underlying mystery that was unfolding within this seriously sexy romance, seriously scorching hot! The writing is perfection and the story carefully crafted to totally enthrall the reader. The scenes are beautifully created to give the reader a sense of voyeurism. I felt as though I was experiencing the scenes as they took place, which in turn led to my cheeks being flushed, my heart racing, my palms sweating and my mind reeling. The story completely sucks you in, and there is no turning back.

“You can’t help me,” he said. “You can’t be what I need. Nobody can. I’ve learned that the hard way.”

The circumstances in which Ivy arrives at Markham Hall are less than ideal, but it’s apparent from the beginning that it will be a life changing affair. Having lost the last of her family, Ivy is faced with a choice, move in with with her late cousin’s husband, or struggle to find another way to support herself. Given the time period that this story unfolds from, this is a daunting task. Ivy is uneasy, with the situation before her, but determined to look at it through positive eyes. She will simply make the best of a bad situation. Ivy is a young woman, completely alone in this world, in a time when most women her age are already either married or betrothed to a “suitable” suitor. Julian Markham is a wealthy man, with an aura of power and danger surrounding him. He is also her cousins’ widower. His past is a mystery to all, but this does nothing to deter the locals from drawing their own conclusions and spreading rumours. When their paths converge, it’s explosive. The sexual tension, chemistry and attraction are incredibly powerful and refuse to be ignored.

“I’ve been thinking of it all day.” His fingers trailed against my hand and up my sleeve, until they came to rest against the bodice of my dress. “What are you?’ he asked. “Some kind of spirit sent to tempt me?”

The living arrangements become even more challenging, as Ivy and Julian attempt to coexist within the same walls. Julian is truly a force to be reckoned with and Ivy is extremely stubborn and determined. She knows what her body wants, and even though it feels wrong, it’s a want that won’t go away. Secrets, swirl between the two and desire overwhelm them both. Lust and desire that refuse to be extinguished all culminate with the fear of what truthfully happened to her cousin, gave me a feeling of uneasiness. I was frightened and intrigued at the same time. I couldn’t help wondering what Ivy’s fate would be once all of the secrets and rumours were revealed.

The Awakening of Ivy Leavold is intriguing and provocative. It will leave you thinking long after you have turned the last page. Truly a remarkable take on a historical romance, it’s not a must read, it’s a must experience. Bring on book two; I cannot wait to see how this story will unravel.

“Like a wolf catching the alien scent of lead and steel on the wind, like a rabbit catching sight of the fox, my very body trembled with the need to flee my hunter.”

I think this novella is missing something crucial...like a backstory? I have no idea why they are attracted to each other, especially on the heroine part. Events are contrived so they can simply boink each other ( I know, I know, it's erotica, but still). Ivy is at Markham Hall because her brother's dead, and she has no one else to turn to besides Julian, who happens to be her deceased cousin, Violet's husband (she wasn't even close to her cousin, so why was she going there?). They met each other, and bang, sparks flew. He simply knew that she could fulfil his dark desires. I have no problem with smut but at least put out some substantial reason for them to want each other besides just because. The plot is simply ludicrous with Ivy going to Markham Hall to become a dependent with her being of age (no chaperone in a bachelor's house). At least make her a housekeeper. That would be more plausible. Ivy's character is simply flat. She has no personality besides going to the stream and bathing half-naked in the hopes that Julian will catch her in the act. She's probably a great contemporary author ( I wouldn't know since this was her first book I've read), but this one was not particularly good to me. I could feel my eyebrows rising to my hairline as the story progressed. I wouldn't bother with the rest of the books (there are three more in this series). If you want to read it, read it for the smut but don't expect much else. The writing's not bad, though hence the two stars.

I first have to give a HUGE thank you to the very lovely and brilliant author, Laurelin Paige, for sending me this book late one night. I received this book a little after midnight and forced myself to turn my phone off at 2am. I was instantly sucked in before the first chapter ended. Laurelin told me it was a historical romance. I was a little skeptical at first. I've never read anything in this genre. Ever!! Those historical type books always intimidated me. With their big fancy words. But, Laurelin promised it was smoking hot and I would love!! I will never ever doubt you again, Lady!!!
This story takes place in 1879 in Yorkshire, England. Ivy Leavold is a young woman who has lost her parents. And most recently, her older brother. She's orphaned. And has no way of taking care of herself. Her home was just auctioned off due to her brothers gambling debts. So she is forced to move in with her late cousins husband. Who is recently widowed. She's under the presumption that Mr. Julian Markham is old. The estate that is now her new home is dark, gloomy, creepy. Like all the life has been sucked out of it. Merely only showing life by the servants keeping it alive, barely. She meets these interesting characters first. The ever lovely Mrs. Brightmore (that was total sarcasm), who is just a miserable bitch..ahem..I mean housekeeper. And the sweet handsome Gareth who is Mr. Markham's valet driver and that has other duties. Some make her feel welcomed. Some don't. But that doesn't bother Ivy. She's a strong willed lady. She does what she wants and says what she wants. And I absolutely loved her!! As she's wandering the house late at night on her own, is when she first meets the mysterious Mr. Markham. And boy is she surprised to find that he is very much young. And gorgeous and sexy and all those yummy sinful things. From the moment they meet, the sexual attraction is there. He tries to fight it. To keep the young and virginal Miss Leavold in tact. But....yeah. Not happening. So they start to get to know each other. Innocently at first. But Ivy...not so innocent. Her thoughts at least. Until, Mr. Markham decides to have friends visit and stay a few days. And this is when things get REALLY INTERESTING. Whenever I hear the word parlor, for the rest of my life, I will think of this one particular scene. Holy fucking hotness!!! Mr. Markham's friends are very...playful, per se. And Ivy decides she wants to play too!! Are you wondering what games they play?!?! Well, you will just have to read to find out!! No spoilers here!! I wish I could just talk about the sexiness in this book for the whole review, but, there is also a mystery surrounding the death of Mr. Markham's 2 deceased wives. Yes people. TWO DEAD WIVES!! Of course everyone suspects the husband. Even Ivy is starting to wonder. I have my own suspicions. But I will keep that to myself. And pray that I'm right!! So, in the end, Ivy is dealing with falling in love, worrying about if she fell in love with a murderer, if Mr. Markham feels the same about her...AND THEN THE ENDING!! I might of yelled at my phone, but I promise, it was a perfect cliffy!
This was my first Sierra Simone book. It will definitely not be my last. I absolutely loved her writing. She made a historical romance read like a very modern book. But, you never lost the feel of the time frame. I loved how she created all these supporting characters that all had stories of their own. Leaving you wanting to know more about them also. The sexy hotness, well...OFF THE CHARTS!! Raw, controlling, animalistic, tabbooish. Leaves you breathless. And sometimes with a book this hot, that's basically all you get. Which is fine. But it's also nice when you get a great storyline filled with suspense and mystery. And always leaves you trying to figure things out. This book was filled with all the great things. Not to mention, amazing writing. Miss Simone, you have a new fan and I can't wait to dive into all your things!!! If guys haven't 1-clicked this by now, you need to go now!! It's a novella. The Education of Ivy Leavold will be out on February 9th!!

"I'm accustomed to getting what I want. And I want you."

So I started this in the early afternoon today and already finished because uhm yeah....sizzling. smoldering. burning with passion. blazing. steaming hot, hot, hot.

"The Awakening of Ivy Leavold" is a steamy Victorian romance about Ivy Leavold, who goes to live with broody Julian Markham (Mr. Markham if ya nastay) Amidst secrets and forbidden desires, Ivy discovers her own passions while challenging societal norms in 19th-century England.

This book totally nails the ominous gothic vibe! Lurking servants, warnings, and dark secrets. Of course, the spicy scenes were !!!! the parlor "games" were !!!!!!!!

I think Ivy's character could have been developed more to truly reflect her personality. Despite not showcasing it extensively, her independence shines through.

Mr. Markham had told me he was a man of needs. But wasn't I also a woman of needs? Roaming wildy, drinking whenever I liked, swimming and running and reading late into the night? For the last sever years, I'd followed my impulses wherever they led me, and it was too late to start now."

I think the reason this book was on the shorter side is because we don't get much backstory. From Ivy's brother's passing, the two past wives, the house, etc. more could have been written about.

Excited to start the next in the Markham Hall series!

Would it always be like this, loving Mr. Markham?  Passion and fear, laced together, one chasing the other until it was impossible to tell where one started and the other began?

So, this is pretty short (about 180 pages) and the first of four books. I’ve had a bit of bad luck with historical romances, since I find most very dull and kindaa... pretentious? This one was pretty good on that regard though. It had the historical elements that I really like but was also modern in a sort of refreshing way. And it was extremely hot and steamy - something I’ve also found missing from this genre (I will happily take recs though!).

My biggest issue was that this book is a bit of insta-love, which is something I really, really don’t like. The heroine, Ivy, was a bit bland as well and she was very contradicting in many of her thoughts which got to my nerves a little. But overall, she was a sweet girl. And Mr. Markham? This man is HOT AS HELL. Oh man. Loved him. Incredibly domineering, reminded me a lot of Tyler from Priest (the exact same vibes, you guys!).

There was this little orgy scene in the book that I HATED, and I’m taking half a star for that. So unnecessary. Other than that, a pretty solid read!

I was in the mood for an historical story and wow this was such a good read. It had a mystery sub plot, lots of sexual tension simmering away and quite the naughtiest house guests.

Ivy goes to live with Mr Markham following the death of her brother. Markham is her only living relative, and even then he's only related by marriage. Recently widowed, he is intense and deliciously alpha, at once pushing her away and following her around.

The smut was a joy and he has such a dirty, dirty mouth. Meanwhile there's suspicions around the death of his late wife and something is not right with his servants.

This one really held my interest. It ends with quite a few things unresolved but hopefully all will be revealed in the second and final book. Highly recommended.

3.5 stars! The Awakening of Ivy Leavold is a book that has been on my TBR for the longest time! This is the start of the Markham Hall series and when I saw the audio was being released, I knew it was the perfect time to jump in.

This is a short read, it’s a novella that is just under 200 pages and definitely leaves things not finished with the story. That said, it was entertaining for what it was. This has gothic, historical, erotica vibes and is similar to a bunch of my fav stories: Jane Eyre, Rebecca, Crimson Peak.

It’s 1879 and Ivy is headed to Markham Hall. After the recent passing of her brother, and the death of her parents years before, at 19 Ivy is all alone and relying on the mercy of strangers to help her. She gets invited to Markham Hall to stay with Julian Markham, her late cousin’s husband. And from there she learns her cousin, who was Mr. Markham’s second wife, passed just a month after their marriage. Now Ivy is super pulled towards Julian and Markham Hall but starts learning some dark secrets about both.

This was just moody and steamy and fun! Like I mentioned, the story isn’t complete with this one book, but it was intriguing enough to continue at some point. I didn’t love it quite as much as I thought I would, very insta everything really and not too much depth to Ivy so far in the story.

The audiobook is narrated by Zara Hampton Brown, it was an easy listen and entertaining! I received an audio ALC from Dreamscape Select via NetGalley, all thoughts in this review are my own!

An erotic Jane Eyre, it has been awhile since I pick up a book from Sierra Simone, and this is a good reminder how much I resonate with her writing—the way she articulates sexual tension and steam is like no other—bold, stimulating, but never steer into crass. The writing style also fits surprisingly well for a period piece (I've only read her contemporary romance in the past). All of this is elevated by Zara Hampton-Brown's emotive performance in the audiobook.

I'm a bit surprised for this re-release (the audiobook was produced in 2024, while the novella was originally published in 2015), the publisher didn't bundle the series together, as The Awakening of Ivy Leavold on its own is not really self-contained, ending abruptly on a cliffhanger. As much as I enjoyed the story, its close resemblance to the character and plot point of Jane Eyre made it more like an erotic fan fiction, rather than an entity that can exist on its own; without the knowledge of Charlotte Brontë's classic, the heroine and hero as described on page is rather shallow in personality.

There's something inherently alluring about combining gothic romance with explicit sex (physical isolation vs. eruption of emotion). This is a promising start to the series, and I'll be curious to see if it will move into more original territory after this familiar setup.

**This ARC was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Much appreciated!**

Mr. Markham, you were delightful, and you can take me on at your manor anytime you'd like ;)

Julian Marham and Ivy Leavold, first of all, they have great names. Julian and Ivy, so classy sounding. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was my first foray into erotic HR and it was definitely a good book to start with. There's an ongoing "mystery" plot underscoring the romance that takes center stage and I think it works perfectly together. The author did an excellent job of giving readers a story to go along with the sexy times.

Not only were Julian and Ivy both interesting characters but the peripheral characters were also very interesting. Like someone familiar with HF would expect, the staff seemed to hold many opinions and many secrets which I felt added to the authenticity of the Historical aspect of the book.

This book definitely makes me want to rekindle my dormant love of historical fiction. I am very much looking forward to devouring the rest of this series and seeing what else the author has to offer.
I would definitely suggest this book to others!

P.S. I thought this book was reminiscent of Jane Eyre, though much naughtier :)

I wanted a possessive, ALPHA H and this H was only like this at the end. The h was innocent; she had never been kissed or been with a man. As soon as she meets the H, she has no problem acting flirty and wanting him to have sex with her. Lets not forget that the H's wife, who is the h's cousin, is barely in the grave. It was disgusting that the h had no shame. The H invites a bunch of people to his home and holds a sex party. The h is blindfolded and the men and women remove her clothing. BOTH men and women kiss and caress the h. One man makes her pleasure him with her hand. I was so grossed out. I will not be continuing this series.
