Rate this book

York is determined to find a mate so he can have a family. Cassidy, wallowing in debt, accepts a three-day program that allows vampires to feed from her. The two can’t have each other, but that certainly doesn’t stop them.

This is one of few vampire romance novels I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it. I was a little confused by the vampire lore/abilities, but I’m sure they’re explained in Charlene Hartnady’s other series. The little bits we did get explained confused me further, but it didn’t hinder the quality of the story.

Whenever infertility is mentioned in romance, my stomach drops because I know what’s going to happen: a miracle baby. And I hate it. That being said, we don’t find out whether or not this is the case, but it’s strongly hinted that Cassidy will be able to become pregnant.

A Mate for York had an interesting premise. I think the concept of the “dating” program was really interesting. I’ll definitely be continuing the series. All the vampires introduced were so interesting and different from each other that I can’t wait to read their books.

No clue why I read this. When I looked at her other series, they held zero appeal. But I sallied forth anyway. York is a pretty good guy. For the ultimate vamp tough guy, he was pretty sweet. Kept really f'ing up with Cassidy though.

This story was angsty (which I really do not like in "mate" stories)and they denied their feelings for almost the entire book. Lots of sex though, but no talking. The characters were underdeveloped, especially Cassidy.

I had issues and they are discussed in the spoiler below.

In general, I do not really like the world the author has created so it will probably affect my willingness to read any further into the series. Although there is one other vamp, Lazarus, who I would be really interested in seeing more of. Plus the ending of this story is abrupt and there is a big question I want the answer to. But the next book is not his and is a 2nd chance so I will be skipping. These vamps are total manwhores; so I know I have zero interest in the next story.

This book really started off good. Until about the 12% mark on my Kindle, where it went downhill fast. Really fast. Really downhill when the author decided to use the word 'cum' as a verb. There is no such thing as 'to cum'. Please. Learn it already. This isn't a bad porn flick. I hate butchered grammar in my books.

Speaking of grammar, this book is badly edited. Awkward grammar at best, weirdly placed commas - I just itched to get my red pen out and go to town on this book. It's been a while since I read a book this badly edited.

Then there's that 'mammory glands' thing to describe boobs. I laughed out loud on that one, and I nearly peed my pants. I've never heard boobs described quite like this in a book before. I get that the author is trying to stand out from the crowd, but come on! This is going too far! This was clinical, unsexy and just doesn't belong in a book (or scene) where a vamp is getting his groove on. Talk about a complete mood-killer!

And then we have the 'pussy fur'. O.M.G. I felt dumber after having read that! I laughed so hard I started coughing. Yes, it's that bad.

Moving on to the...rutting! And not just rutting. Oh, no. We have 'rutting doggy style'. I kid you not. I can't help it, but it made me think of those Animal Planet TV shows where animals rut. A really bad association when you're reading a smutty book. I just....it's just....I don't even....there are no words.

And on top of it when I learned that the heroine was infertile, I correctly predicted that his super-vamp-sperm would would get her pregnant after all. Ovaries not producing viable eggs was no problem at all!

With how the author described how vamps/humans ALWAYS produce boys, it wasn't difficult to see where this author got her inspiration from. This was like a bad carbon copy of New Species by Laurann Dohner where species/humans can only have boys. That, and a lot of other little things made me think of the New Species books. Curious, I just now checked this author's GR page, and lo and behold, who is Hartnady's favorite author? None other than Laurann Dohner. I rest my case. And I knock this down to a mere 1-star. Why? If you've read this far, you know why....

York and Cassidy. I think I would have enjoyed this more if the premise of the plot had made more sense and the world building had been better (more than a token effort). It's a world where people know about Vampires. Vampires live where? How do they interact with humans? What are the rules? This is the first in the series so if the author was going to lay the groundwork, you'd expect it to be here...
Kinda like a 'Mars needs women' trope, female vampires are almost entirely infertile because apparently their hips are too small... chuckle... i kid you not! So the two King Vampires have set up a breeding program bringing in willing human women. Cassidy isn't part of the breeding program but part of the 'testing' program to make sure the chosen Vampires aren't susceptible to blood lust. This is how she and York meet. Their meeting sets of series of events that make little sense. I guess it's a no-no for vampires to sleep with humans outside of the breeding program???? It's not explained at all why they can't f*ck like bunnies if they want to. Really, it was annoying and I hate lazy writing. It could have been a fun book if the author had put in more effort.

As the head of the elite guard, poor York has seen (and heard) his share of rutting and mating, he even got close to mating the elf princess at one point, but was once again sidelined. Now, with the human trial breeding program finally underway, York is determined to make it into the program and finally find a human mate of his own; one who can bear him the children he's always wanted. But the competition is steep and any sign of bloodlust means that any male displaying that characteristic, will be booted off the program.

Unfortunately for York, karma yet again decides to bite him in the ass, when he - during a trial run - finds himself so turned on by one particular human female that he refuses to let go until she succumbs to his bite by orgasming. Naturally, this is interpreted as bloodlust. Poor York, can he help that every pore in his body screams that this woman is HIS mate and future mother of his young?

Of course, there is a reason why Cassidy has opted to join the trial program, insteaad of the actual thing. Her job is to act as a test subject and to root out potential suitors that have bloodlust. You see, Cassidy's got a secret that pretty much guarantees that she'll never make it into the real program. But what's a girl to do when the hottest vampire in town won't stop pursuing her, and even goes against his kings's explicit orders...?

I loved this couple and their story so much. Not only did Cassidy have the spunk to stand up to Brant's never ending tyranny (off with his head! Stake the bastard!)but Cassidy's nosy neighbor, mrs. Simmons, was a hoot. Her bloodthirst for killing spiders added an hilarious dimension to the story.

4.75 well deserved stars!

Un "intento" de libro muy malo sobre vampiros

A mate for York de Charlene Hartnady serie The program libro 1

SO. Obviously I cannot help myself and found myself stuck in this world of vampires, fae, and shape shifters. I can't seem to help myself.
description

But this side series to the other ones I've read, these were a tad bit better as they only focused on ONE MAN VAMPIRE and ONE WOMAN.

Not that I don't like some trashy menage-a-trios action. *wigges eyebrows*
description

But they weren't written as well as the ones with just two people.

I love everything about York. <3 I swear I love all the damn male vampires (except Brant, that fucker) in these books.... Maybe not Lance either as he was a colossal douche bag for a bit there. I think his book is next if I remember right. (As in I've already read four books in this series already.

Have you ever read a book and wondered is this book really great and there is something off with you. Thats how I feel with this one. The premise was great but I had a issue connecting, and a huge issue with our hero who is supposed to be this big bad warrior(number one warrior) but he constantly lets others tell him what to do and dictates how he will be with the heroine and he lets them. I HATE that in a book, I don't care the reason. And then he puts himself in too many situations that just made me mad. I don't know I just can't find my groove with any books, and I feel like all I am doing is looking and looking for a book to catch my interest, and I am reading so many book descriptions I've about read a book. I feel like I need a Calgon bath to take me away(lol who remembers that commercial). Sorry for the rambled rant, this book wasn't all bad just not what I wanted and I will more than likely look into book two because like I said I'm really not sure that this wasn't completely me with the issues.

Cassidy the heroine of the story has read an article asking human females to become blood donors to Vampires. Three days at $45,000 a day. But when she ask for the 3 days off her boss will give it to her for sex, so she is fired. Upon her first donation of blood to the elite warrior York he appears to go into blood lust but it really wasn't that. He was harshly punished and she was sent on her merry way with all of her money.

The story has no depth no characterization . There is nothing mentioned to set up a world for the vampires to exist in, except they live in a castle. There is no story about who and what the characters are. The Vampires have very few paranormal traits that Vampires have. There is no love story between the H/H He drinks her blood and they have sex. But they fall deeply in love. I don't think so!!

This is what I call lazy writing by the author. Just pushing stories out to make a few $$. I am glad I got it on Kindle Unlimited. Its not worth buying.

So the author is great at the sex scenes and building that suspense and then paying it off. There is just so much that is wrong in her writing of the male characters and in the world building.

Spoilers

What is this world? How do vampires know nothing of human culture? York seemed like an alien visiting the planet rather than a guy that lives in the same area.

What is up with the sexual harassment at this woman’s job? She just brushed off how handsy he was and all. I know that this happens but it was very weirdly written as if this were happening in the 1950s.

Lazarus is a stereotype. His character was annoying. In fact, all the men were stereotyped bro-dudes who said “I’m not a pussy!” And “I’m a badass!” And grunted and were all brawn and no brains. Not a thinker in the bunch.

Brant was dumb and the reason for the rules were never explained. It seemed like a dumb plot device.

The whole thing overall was clunky and silly.

But to its credit, I stuck it out to the end and found the love between the two MCs to be very implausible but still endearing and sometimes cute.

AS DELICIOUS AS SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS !!!
Title: A Mate for York
Series: The Program
Designation: Book One of Series, Standalone Novella, NO Cliffhanger
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author: Charlene Hartnady
My Rating: FIVE DELICIOUSLY SEXY STARS*****
Yowza! Charlene Hartnady has obviously been hard at work and her phenomenal creativity and imagination have definitely been working overtime as demonstrated by A Mate for York, the first release in her brand new series, The Program. And may I just say WOW! I love it! The story is original, unique, well crafted, cute, fun, romantic and seductive. Heck, I'm 63 and even I wanted to apply for "The Program." The narrative is exceptionally well written in the third person with alternating his and her points of view. The dialogue is smart, snappy, well executed and flows seamlessly. The entire book is extremely well edited which is always a big plus for me. The characters shine as brightly as the beacon of a lighthouse. They are captivating, fascinating, engaging, endearing, sexy as sin and at times, laugh out loud funny. Another big plus for me is the recurring appearance of characters from Charlene's previously released books which reinforces not only the validity and believability of the series but also the familiarity of the world in which the book has been written. It is always such a treat to see how our favorite characters are doing. Charlene skillfully combines all these elements into a delicious tale filled to the brim with a little light humor, fun-filled adventure, a dollop of suspense, a generous measure of a romping good time and loads of dreamy romance! Where can I sign up for "The Program?"

Kings Zane and Brant are now proud papas of a bouncing baby boy named Sam and when they aren't trying to keep Queen Tanya happy and satisfied, they're both busy implementing their new "Breeding Program" also known as "The Program." What? Breeding Program? Oh yes, I said breeding program. Zane and Brant have learned through Ward, Stephany's new alpha wolf mate, that humans are, in fact, strong enough to survive a mating with shifters and vampires other than the kings. It seems the shifters have been doing it for years, in secret of course. The Kings have finally embraced this new idea and have been hard at work drawing up the contracts with the humans and finalizing the arrangements. Their hard work has finally paid off and they're launching the first stage of "The Program" by advertising for women to volunteer to date a vampire. Huh? Yep, the initial trial will be called "The Dating Program." Wait - what? What's the difference? Well, I'm glad you asked. The difference is that there will be no mating and no sex with the participants of the initial trial. It will be blood-drinking only. What? Oh, did I forget to mention that part? This trial is for three days only and is strictly to determine if the chosen vampire males can drink blood from the human women without experiencing bloodlust. Oh my! Unfortunately, quite a few vampires suffer from the affliction which can turn calm, disciplined vampires into blood crazed maniacs who can drain a human of all their blood within minutes. Oh no! And, there's no way to tell who will succumb to bloodlust until they actually drink from a human. Yep, that's right! It can be a bit risky. But the human women have been carefully screened and those chosen for the trial will be paid $45,000.00 a day for every day they complete the program so at the end of the three day trial, they could receive as much as $135,000.00. That is, if they survive. Just a minor little problem but all precautions and security measures have been taken. Unfortunately, all of this has become a necessary risk since vampires are becoming extinct. Although it's dangerous for human women to give birth to vampire babies, most female vampires cannot safely birth children at all and have to be sterilized. Sadly, the births resulting from vampire/human unions have been only male children. As a result, there's a shortage of viable women thereby creating the problem - they need human women. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy about this newest little development and have already made an attempt on King Zane's life. So now it seems that the vampires and everyone involved with The Program may be at risk. Oh my goodness!

But no matter the danger or how insurmountable it may seem, nothing will stop York. Most of the vampire guards had decided to participant in the combat competition in order to win a position in the new breeding program - the chance to have their own female - a soft, beautiful, curvy, human female. Who wouldn't fight for that, right? It had long been York's dream to have a mate and a family. Most vampire males never do. Only the Kings had been allowed to mate humans - until now. But that was all about to change and York had already been promised a slot in the program in exchange for a favor he granted Brant's brother, Xavier, but nonetheless, York wanted to fight and earn his position. He is the Captain of the Elite Guard after all and he doesn't want to be accused of receiving favorable treatment. He is the biggest, baddest and best of all the vampire warriors. And of course, as usual, he succeeds again just as he will be successful at proving that he would never succumb to bloodlust. Piece of cake, right? Wrong! Human females are, indeed, very hard to resist, especially the ones with beautiful green eyes like Cassidy, the first female candidate he meets. And she tastes even better than she looks! He would have his female and he wants this one - rules and contracts be damned!

Cassidy is almost thirty and still has absolutely nothing to show for her life other than a death certificate for a no good selfish husband and an unexpected mountain of debt, which of course, was all because of his gambling and his weekly trips to "The Kitty's Paw", an escort agency. She had hoped by this point she would be settled into a wonderful life with the man of her dreams and two or three children but all she has is painful memories, heartache, a crappy job with a lecherous boss, a pile of debt and a zero bank balance. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If she can only be approved to participate in the vampire "Dating Program", she could make enough money to pay off her debt and have enough left over to start a new life - somewhere else. She could make it through three days, right? She just has to let them drink a little blood. Easy Peasy, right? Not when her very first vampire is hot, handsome, sex-on-a-stick York! Buckle up my ladies! We're in for another wild ride! No spoilers from me but I will say this....Beautiful human widow with gorgeous green eyes and lush curves-check! Handsome Elite Vampire Guard determined to have his human female, rules be damned-check! A large cast of wonderful characters-check! Two exasperated Kings-check! A new Breeding Program, a dash of humor, a lot of fun, a little angst, and a pinch of suspense-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, sweet romance and dreamy sex-you bet! That and a whole lot more! Deliciously cute, seriously sexy and delightfully entertaining!

I think the idea was good here, having a programme for selected vampires to find their spouse, but the story just did not work for me. It might be the writing itself or simply the fact that there was no time for the characters to learn more about each other prior to exploring their connection, but either way around this was not a great experience. The characters were sweet, but I felt like I needed more information about their backgrounds and it would have helped if they had time to reach that stage of a relationship.
I read good reviews about another book in the series, but I decided to try from the beginning, which probably was not a good idea.
I might try the one that I initially looked at some point, hopefully it would be slightly better.

This was a fairly middle of the road book. It was sexy and humorous and sweet but with a fair share of problems. H was large and in charge all alpha yumminess. He was almost scarily protective but very tender with h. h was a hot mess. She was sweet but damn she attracted all the losers. She stood up for herself somewhat but she wasn't really as tough as i like my heroines. Her orgasmless life did make me feel her though. The two were combustible together and like over the top saccharine sweet. The ending where they are declaring their love for each other gave me cavities. The sex scenes were fairly hot but every so often he'd say something that ruined it for me. This brings me to one of the 2 biggest issues of the book. The vampires were known to the general public, but they seemed to know next to nothing about human. It was so strange half the time the vampires talked overly formal with no contractions and perfect english, the other have it was "bro" and being "pussies" and weird misused colloquialisms. They called breasts "mammary glands" which is technically correct but hardly sexy and pubic hair was "pussy fur." My second big issue was that there was no world building. Vampires are public but there's not a whole lot of information given on that. We're told the vamps have enhanced sense which is pretty standard but given no other real info about them. They have huge dicks but when do they no? They apparently can withstand sun since the couple was standing in sunlight. Silver is harmful/deadly. They choose mates rather than fate. They can breed with humans but instead of doing so quietly they created this bachelor style program for it. Why? Who knows we're not told. They have some sort of caste system but that's really not explained either.
Bottom line: this was a cutish, entertaining little book. I enjoyed it and it made me laugh. It was also over the top cheesy, the dialogue was often cringeworthy, and there was next to no world building. I liked this for what it was but won't be seeking out the next one

I liked this book. It wasn't too terrible. But there's some huge questions hanging in the air.

First off, I've never read a single book by this author, and I seriously felt the repercussions of that. She wrote things like I was just supposed to understand. Take for instance...

THE ENTIRE FUCKING PREMISE OF THE BOOK.

haha. Ok... we're back.

"The Program" is actually some type of dating ritual, or meeting, or like match.com in person, or well it's something. We know that. Only the most elitist vamp-men get in. This is like some coveted thing so these guys can have kids and mates. They fight for a spot. They go through all this dating crap, and there's stages to pick these women.

Man vamp-man gets a spot. Goes through the first stage. Falls in love with woman who isn't in the program. Blah, blah, blah. We all know how it goes.

Remember how coveted this spot is to be able to have a mate and kids and everything? Well the main vamp-man says fuck that. But it's ok. Because he still gets a mate, and she may or may not have kids.

See what I'm getting at? WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE POINT OF THIS BOOK? He got what he wanted anyway. Haha. Oh man.

There's a whole lot of things like that in this book. And I was just left like...

...

WTF?!

That being said, it wasn't a horrible book. It was just really lacking in explaining back story and reasoning and like the point.

Oh and the ending? I am never reading one of this author's books again. Sorry, not sorry. BS. I like my epilogues, and I've been reading a whole lot of Alexa Riley. Give me one or five like her.

If there is one woman that can make a cheesy book sexy it’s Charlene Hartnady.

This was just that. Light, easy, cute and so cheesy. And yet? I devoured the whole thing.
Her books are so uncomplicated, (even though we do get drama) and it’s this part I enjoy the most when it comes to her books.

If I need to “breathe” because I got a lot going on, but still want to read- Hartnady is such a good choice.

This is the first book about the breeding program and in it we meet York. The strongest of the vampire elite, and he falls for the one human he cannot have.
Cassidy.
Sweet and strong Cassidy, just trying to better her life with a little cash so she can start over again in a new city.
A fresh start.
At least that was what she thought.

Super cheesy and cute, but definitely also hot.

Ok so this is the start of the Vampire “program” series. Although I kind of felt thrown into the middle of something luckily I had prior knowledge from the dragon shifter series and knew what to expect here.

We see the start of the vampire dating(breeding) program as the 10 elite vampires are being tested for bloodlust on cooperative paid human females. York of course our typical arrogant male gets accused of bloodlust when he refuses to stop drinking from a female just because he can’t get her to orgasm.. although York is really sweet and wants a mate and family sooo bad he breaks all the rules for this female for who knows what reason. I really felt that our MCs relationship tho hot was a little rushed and maybe even a little too good to be true. I find it hard to believe that after felling York wanting a mate and family so bad, feeling his yearning, that he decides to jump into something and break all the rules so quickly.

The series has some of its own underlying plot, with fascist uprisings and hate crimes. So I’m definitely interested to see where this goes.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a solid 4 star book. Even though normally I would deduct a star for ~these vampires, just could not figure anything about humans out. They’ve lived on this earth, in that city, for hundreds of years but didn’t know basic slang...seriously!?!?!
If the book had indicated that they were kept separate. If the book indicated they were kept in a bubble, I would have bought it. But they weren’t.

They all also called breast mammary glands.

This is a series of books about vampires. I am including all of my reviews in one synopsis because it's just easier. I love series of books. I average reading various forms of literature to around 300-400 books a year. So back to my opinion. After reading, and I did read the whole series, I came to the conclusion that this was a new author, but no, she has quite a few "books" under her belt. Therefore you would believe this writer would have series writing under control. Her technique on character development is mediocre. After you read the first in the series be prepared to have the identical wording in the next book for way to much. It creates confusion on issues that had already been resolved reopened or ongoing three books later. One minute a couple is together, the next thing is something occurring in another novel. These books do not even equate to stand alone novels. Her writing technique reveals someone wanting to get books out quickly so repetitive use from previous books is not an issue and is not something the reader would catch. There's nothing wrong in a short review of what had occurred in a prior book, but the receptiveness is the downfall of her writing skills. This author definitely could benefit from an editor. The basic premise of what she wanted to write about is not a bad idea, but the methodology of her presentation is horrid. I do not recommend this series to anyone who is an avid reader. It would only frustrate you.

Needs some work...

At least this is a stand-alone story that doesn't require reading the previous series or each book. The story is okay and the characters could be better defined.

I don't read a lot of vamp stories primarily because I favor the wolves! I did like parts of this story and found quite a bit of it humorous rather it was intended or not.

York is supposedly one of the strongest vampires and the leader of the Elite Guard but I find him a bit wishy-washy at best. The same holds true for the King, Brant, whose bark is obviously worse than his bite as he proves time and time again in his dealing with York.

No surprise that Cassidy suffers from very low self-esteem and is somewhat defenseless and spineless at the beginning of the book but thankfully gets a bit of redeeming confidence.

There's a lot of sex or talk about sex in this story which tends to be a bit of overkill. Sadly, the story is unmemorable and predictable. The vamps in this world are pretty tame and I can easily forget that I'm reading a vampire tale. And why in the world are there two kings? It appears Zane is the less dominant between him and Brant but he only pops up infrequently int he story. Then there is the question of the queen--is she mated to both Brant and Zane? Who is the baby by? This needs some clarification.

There are some editing issues but overall not a bad start to a new series. On my Were Scale of Hotness, 3 stars.

This was the first vampire book I’ve read in ages, and though it’s not the most original book I’ve read but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. It was another nice and easy read that kept me interested until the last page, and it’s part of a series so I will continue with it just maybe as one of my in between books.

The main characters are York and Cassidy; York is the big bad vampire who’s always wanted a family that’s why he entered the breeding programme which is where he meets Cassidy. Cassidy is struggling with a huge pile of debt after her husband died; she’s working in a terrible job with a horrible boss and she signs up to the breeding programme because of the money. The two meet simply and their feelings toward each other after a bonding session come as a total surprise; they also act inappropriately getting her kicked off the programme but that doesn’t stop them.

There are only a few secondary characters in this book but I feel they are going to be explored more in the other books in the series.

The storyline is not very original as I’ve read a few books that are similar and just use a different supernatural species, but it was really still a nice read. The pacing was pretty good keeping readers guessing till the very last chapter.

3.5 stars, an interesting read.

I am ADDICTED to this series; I can get enough of this paranormal romantic goodness. With alpha males in all shapes and sizes with Ménage à trois, MFM love triangles (eat your heart out), Vampires, Shifters, and Elves. It is Sexy, it is Sizzling, it is smoking Hot, it is Erotic so much so that it jumps right off the pages and leaves you needing a cold shower.
Sassy, headstrong females, and fighting to the death is not uncommon. So, what happens when smoking hot vampires and shifters, mortal enemies want the same thing; this is where things get so interesting, and the fun begins. These men are ruthless, they are vicious, power players, they are violent. There is lots of action, danger and war around every corner but given all that they love fast, they love with their whole heart and make you want to go and find your own.
Charlene has woven a captivating, tangled web of lies, deceit, suspense, drama and love that will leave you breathless. The characters are to die for, and each have their own voice in this series. I love that we get their POV because it makes them more real.
It is not all doom and gloom though there are plenty of witty moments and humour that will have you laughing out loud.
Don’t even stop to think just click and read and tell me I am not wrong. Happy reading!

Another incredible story line, The Program. Can't wait to read more books on the vampires looking for their human mates in order to find their happiness and have children.
The pairing of York and Cassidy is a great match. I hope we get to read more of their pairing. If life holds for them all they wish for.
You have to read this book to find the funny parts. Charlene has always managed to work in humor into all the books from The Vampire Kings to this current one The Program. I couldn't stop laughing when Cassidy and her neighbor were referring to York as the hairy spider.
It was good to read also that Brant, one of the kings, has become a little more of a softy. He has his own surprise for the readers.
Charlene, I am so glad that this story just came about so easily. It's a great one. Please keep them coming. Love, love, love them all.

Received an ARC for an honest review. 10 Stars

This book was HOT! Hartnady always pulls me and pushes me through the story experiencing every erotic moment. She never disappoints. The best part of this book is seeing these big hunky men fall over themselves for women who always feel plain and ordinary. These men are able to see beyond the plain Janes and make women blossom. It is almost like these men are the orgasm of fairy godmothers. They make all wishes come true. Great plot and can't wait to read the next book about Gideon. That man has some serious secrets that I can't wait to learn about.
