Kakka on kiehtovaa!
Tämän kirjan avulla opit tosijuttuja, kuten:
- miten aineenvaihdunta toimii
Edward Kay is an award-winning author and screenwriter with an eclectic background in both live-action and animated television, as well as fiction and print journalism.
Edward was a senior staff writer and producer for Canada’s most popular political satire show, the International Emmy nominated This Hour Has 22 Minutes, during its four most successful seasons.
His newest book, the acclaimed non-fiction title Indigenous Ingenuity, was co-authored with Saddle Lake Cree writer Deidre Havrelock and released in 2023. It explores the amazing but previously unsung STEM accomplishments of pre-contact Indigenous North Americans. Kirkus Reviews calls it "an ambitious, appealing, and accessible work," while the School Library Journal gave it a starred review as "a completely unique and important narrative not to be missed."
Edward's first crime novel, At Rope’s End, features Dr. James Verraday, a cop-hating forensic psychologist who reluctantly teams up with rogue detective Constance Maclean to track down a serial killer before they can murder again. Publisher's Weekly gave it a thumbs up, writing that "Kay spins a good whodunit with a juicy bonus twist at the end," adding that this "intriguing mystery debut blends academia and law enforcement in what looks to be a promising marriage made in the name of crime."
Edward also created the three-book "Gross Science" non-fiction series for children. The first book in the series, Stinky Science, is in production as a television series with Shaftesbury Films.
He has written three previous novels, all for YA readers: the critically acclaimed sci-fi series STAR Academy and STAR Academy: Dark Secrets, as well as Sink and Destroy, a work of historical fiction about the epic Battle of the Atlantic during World War 2.
Edward’s writing has garnered him numerous awards and nominations including three Canadian Screen Awards, three Canadian Comedy Awards, and two Japan Prize “Finalist” designations for best educational writing.
Prior to becoming an author and screenwriter, Edward spent six years as a freelance journalist, covering a diverse range of subjects including crime, science, literature, the arts, architecture and business.
And this is the first entire book on poops we adults will read together with kids. Who knew it would be this fun?
Well, just don't eat anything while reading this one. (Obviously not to damage the pages! And of course you will see some poopy images 🙃).
However, the information provided is well planned and presented to the reader in such a way that you get drawn to the contents more and more on what would come next, event though we all usually run away we even hear the p word.
The illustrations are poopy. I don't mean they are bad. They just poopy perfect.
And I say again. That's a lot of poop fun facts with fun illustrations.
Thank you, Kids Can Press, for the advance reading copy.
A welcome return to this gross-out science series – it was only the "eep, corona – let's demolish our immune systems and drink bleach for the rest of our lives!!!" hysteria of the germ one that let it down. This manages to cover digestive biology, the history of toilets from ancient China through the Industrial Revolution and beyond, scat disguises and camouflage, and so much more. Yes, of course it's designed to look scatological, and gross and disgusting, but the illustrations do that with care, and the text is surprisingly heavy, serious and educational. School librarians are, then, assured there is nothing to turn their nose up at here. Unless it gets returned looking disgustingly brown, of course.
Oh, and of the many gross-out trivia books that might mention wombat turds being cuboid, this is the first to inform as to how and why, proving in one fell (and foul) swoop that this is not a book of trivia.
This silly but also informational non-fiction text tells about human waste and the digestive system. While it is silly and has funny illustrations it also has a lot of really great information. The book is about 30 pages long and has a fair amount of text on page, but it is fairly large and well-spaced. The book does use some toilet words like crappy but otherwise there is no uncomfortable content or language. The book has lots of great non-fiction text features including a glossary, diagrams and labels. As a grade 3 teacher, I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 7-11 range. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!
Thank you to the author, Kids Can Press and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was not familiar with the Gross Science series, but this book delivered and more. We all know that kids are endlessly fascinated by the topic of poop, and most of us are hesitant - or embarassed - about going into the topic in too much detail. This book will serve both groups well. Full of interesting facts, from health, animal facts, history to inventions, it covers more than you ever thought you wanted to know - and entertains you while doing it. The kids I read this with loved it, and so did I.
Oh Poop! This book is gross and full of interesting facts!
My kids thought this book was super funny, but learned a lot too. From health, animal facts, history to inventions, this book covers all facets and impact poop has on society. The illustrations are colorful and great as well since they have a comic-like drawing style.
Granted this book is aimed at kids, but I actually learned a bunch as an adult too and all the while being entertained!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy of this ARC for my honest review.
I thought I had read enough poop nonfiction books and wouldn’t enjoy this because there wasn’t anything more to learn. I was wrong. I now know my 95 year old dad probably pooped more than 25,000 pounds in his lifetime. What I really like is that this book is good for budding gastroenterologists, archaeologists, historians, biologists, and zoologists. The facts are en”gross”ing. I enjoyed the whole book. There is a small list for additional readings at the end.
What a funny book stacked with interesting facts! Anything you ever wanted to know about poop... and a lot more, haha! Funny anecdotes and useful information not only for children. In fact, I doubt that children younger than 7-8 years old would understand most of it unless they are really into science.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for this Advance Review Copy.
Ällöttävä tiede -sarjassa julkaistaan lasten tietokirjoja inhottavista aiheista.
Mike Shiellin kuvitus on aikaisemmista osista tuttua tyyliä. Ilmeikkäät hahmot ja sopivan ällöt yksityiskohdat toimivat ja tuovat kirjaan mukavasti väriä. Edward Kay on tonkinut oikein mainion läjän tietoa. Eiköhän tästä itse kukin jotain uutta mukaansa saa, sen verran runsaasti tietoa on taas tarjolla – jos vain ei säikähdä aiheen ällöttävyyttä.
This title is nominated for the 2024 Hackmatack Award in the English non-fiction category. As the title suggests, this book will tell you everything you ever thought you wanted to know (& more!) about excrement. My personal star rating is probably closer to three and half, just because I have a hard time not being grossed out. However! I just know that our hackmatackers will be all over that. This past year we did another title from the "Gross Science" series, so I had an idea what to expect. The chapter titles and heads are attention getting and often punny (i.e. "urine luck!"), with enough grossness to keep kids interested. The artwork is (thankfully) cartoony and not photorealistic, which helped me to be able to get through it without gagging TOO much. The bottom line: this book is super informative and taught me a lot more than I bargained for! I would recommend it for any kids who are into science/biology, and especially kids that like gross stuff.
