Summary & Analysis | Dragonfly In Amber: (Outlander, Book 2) by Diana Gabaldon

The sweeping saga begun in Outlander continues in Diana Gabaldon’s 1992 Dragonfly in Amber. In it, the Frasers return from France to Scotland, only to be separated, and revelations of the strange relationships within families come to light—among many other events that are entertainingly and engagingly depicted in a solid, substantial piece of writing. This historical fiction is a formidable piece of writing, well worth reading when taken on its own, and much more so as an installment of the massive series of which it is the second part. In such books as those of the Outlander series, both physical and temporal settings matter.

The novel follows the continuing escapades of the time-shifting Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser and her Highlander husband, Jamie Fraser, straddling the centuries-old and near pasts to offer a compelling tale of intrigue, romance, war and the strains of complicated familial connections. Focusing largely on the 1745 Jacobite Rising in Scotland, it offers a down-to-earth view of a historical event that does not receive much attention in American classroom, simultaneously promoting interest in it and providing an authentic background in which the story of how the Frasers handle the series of circumstances that confront them can take place.

I am truly enjoying this series of historical fiction, gaining insights into a time period that I probably pay too much attention to when I was learning history in high school. I am not a fan of romance novels; so those parts are not as enjoyable for me. Overall however, These are well written, entertaining and educating.

Good follow up to the first book. I liked how it started 20 years after the first one finished!

This is my favorite book in the series!

I didn't read this summary though, I read the whole book (and the whole series) in their original form.

Good overview

It reviewed all of the book without giving away much of the exciting details. Just enough to keep you interested.

Still awesome. Just set aside time when you can ignore other things to turn the next page.
