NOTE TO SELF

FATED MATES
HE SLEEPS WITH EVIL OW DURING THEIR 9 Year separation while she is raising his secret kid.
No idea if she is celibate or if he looked for her but I have more expectations in a mate situation especially after they love and are intimate. You don’t sleep w OP period.
What’s the point of a fated mate then.

Also it sounds like it was executed poorly.

Also according to some who read it. When he was released from prison he went on a binder and slept w all the club whores. This was after the h and while she was off raising his kid. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 so much for “fated mates”
A man should not be able to touch OW after meeting his mate much less sleeping w her

I should have known this would be bad from the cover, which looks like a bland contemporary romance and doesn't indicate "dragon shifter" at all. Also, the hero on the cover doesn't match the hero of this book, who is described as a Charlie Hunnam looking type.

This is a dragon shifter fated mates secret baby story. Ace is a dragon shifter who is the Alpha of his clan. He's also the leader of a poorly explained gang / outlaw MC type thing. Harley is his human fated mate. They meet like 9 years ago, then an evil OW told Harley that the OW was really Ace’s mate. So, Harley left, and didn’t tell Ace she was pregnant. 9 years later, her son is having Dragon Shifter Problems, so she reluctantly brings him to meet his dad, who can help him.

I like an angsty second chance story. I like secret baby angst, when it’s done right. The combo of “dragon shifters” and “they’re a gang” sounded fun. But this book flopped in its execution.

I didn’t feel Harley and Ace’s chemistry. The emotion didn’t land. Their relationship was boring, they were both bland, and the angst potential fizzled out. For example, in their 9 years apart, Ace was casually sleeping with the evil OW who kept them apart (since he didn’t know she was evil). When Harley finds out, she’s not upset. There’s no drama. They’re both just like, “it’s in the past.” There were so many moments like that, where something potentially angsty would be brought up, but then the story didn't dig into it, and it went nowhere.

Also, although we get a brief flashback to their past, it cuts off before Harley gets her heart broken (from the OW lying to her). We're just told about it in retrospect, not shown it. What's the point of that? It keeps Harley feeling like a flat character when we're just told about her heartbreak and don't see it in scene. This book was like 500 pages, but it kept all the meaty emotional stuff offscreen.

Ace is a dumbass, and a terrible alpha. For the majority of this story, he has to deal with the evil OW scheming against them, and also his evil twin brother. He gets SO many opportunities to kill both of them, and DOESN’T take them. I've never read a shifter book where an alpha is so hesitant to eliminate enemies, and just lets them to continue to harm him and his family. Ace has got to be the most incompetent wimp of a shifter alpha I've ever read.

The book gets very repetitive, because the whole story is like, “the evil OW or his evil brother show up to menace them. Ace has a confrontation with them, thinks, 'I need to deal with them!!!' and then….doesn't. Rinse and repeat."

And the evil OW and his brother are not criminal masterminds. They’re both pretty stupid. So, it would be one thing if they kept outsmarting Ace because they were master villains. But, they're not. They're both incompetent villains, Ace is just even more incompetent.

The evil OW nearly kills Harley and also nearly breaks them up AGAIN. And after those events, they give her....a stern talking to. There's no mention of "maybe we should kill her." There's not even a mention of removing her from their state. She still is able to just live in her apartment while they wait for her to cause more trouble. She's not even a dragon shifter, she's a lowly human - she should be so easy for Ace to deal with! There was no reason why Ace shouldn't have been able to get rid of her after the first or second time she harmed them, not the 6th or 7th time.

The third big problem: the worldbuilding. This is a world where humans know that shifters exist, and they seem to co-exist in harmony. It also seems like most dragon shifters are criminal gangs – why is that? What’s the lore behind it? We don’t know, it’s never said! How did Harley feel when she found out her fated mate was a shifter – does the human society have fears or prejudices against shifters? We don’t know, it’s never said! There’s a cop in this who is also a villain, so it seems like shifters are beholden to the human justice system – but that's never said, either. Most shifter books I've read have their own justice systems, so it really made no sense that the human justice system seemed to play a role, here.

Ace’s failure to kill the evil OW would make more sense if he had said, “human law prevents me from being able to do that,” or something. But, he never says that. So many of these plot holes would be explained by better worldbuilding.

It felt like this author has no idea how to drive the engine of the plot, aside from making her hero a moron.

It was too long I skipped probably the last third of the book. It just seemed to drag on for no reason.

spoilers. I mean no disrespect to this author but this is my third book by her and I feel like if you read one, you may have read the rest.....

I can get down on a second chance romance, I want the reconnect, a good grovel and redemption. This is why this gets a 2 for me. We don't get any groveling, and I feel like they just jumped right back at it. Which fine, fated mates I get it, but there just was no real angst or build up on it. The fact that Blakely was the driving factor between them and that a miscommunication trope led to 10 years of separation seemed flimsy. And he didn't know she was pregnant the first time? None of the dragons knew.....but the second time everyone including Dylan knew before she even took a test? I am calling BS. At the bare minimum he should have known and found her if he was really paying attention. That inconsistency really bothered me.

Then let's talk plot. This entire plot hinged on Steph continuing to just make super stupid decisions masked as being a nice person. Which if you are the head of a criminal organization you have to have some spine man. Blakely? an issue over and over and over and I'm sorry pity only goes so far until it's stupidity. Forest and Thames and Sean all fall into this category too.

also, the people on your cover don't match your characters. He is blonde, and she is auburn....shouldn't that match?

Again, I know what I signed up for but this could be the first book in her bear bikers series, or her dragon series, I don't mean to hate again, but this just is the same story.

I was hooked when I heard this is a second chance dragon shifter story, and then that gorgeous cover?! 😍 so I ignored all of the low ratings and dove in. ahem...

the writing is realllllllly basic so it's easy to read but it is missing depth and missed opportunities to really get into the emotional components. I didn't really connect with any of the characters either, I understood them, but I didn't care what happened to them.

I was annoyed that the story dragged on, we had a certain side character that kept coming back to break our main couple up and it was annoying. it was overkill. it took me days to finish this book because I didn't care... I think if it was better written, I would care more but I wasn't invested. it just felt like everything moved at a snails pace with the story and development. and then there's a part two?? I was hoping for action and it kind of delivered? but after this, nothing made sense. the decisions characters made (especially Cassie! the FMC's best friend). anyways, was annoyed.

overall, it's an easy read. I'm done.

DNF; the typos, the lack of continuity. The first half was good, and I was even willing to overlook the typos, but by the time I got to part 2, I was over it. This book was long and overly repetitive and could have been a lot shorter if it had better editing.

Well I finished it

Ace didn’t really feel like a strong leader. Harley wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. How Ace didn’t realize Blakely was obsessed with him seems ridiculous. Also if she’s crazy about him why all the sleeping around? It just didn’t make sense.

This book felt extremely long. It took so long to get the climax of the story that I just started skimming to get to the conclusion.

Side note if he knew she was his fated mate why didn’t he ever try to find her. He said his dragon wanted her but he never looked. Got out of prison and as he said “overcompensated” for being locked up. So he slept around but didn’t care to find her. That’s not like most fated mates you read about.

It would have been better if it wasn’t nearly 900 fucking pages. That was not needed. It was all conversations. Literally hundreds of pages of yapping about pointless stuff “what should we have for dinner? Hmmm maybe this or this and this side dish” every single page. We can just assume they ate dinner we don’t need 6 paragraphs about it.

The actual story line had potential but there was no world building or explanations. The humans knew about the supernatural but why? And how? And what’s the overall feeling on it??? Who knows.

Why are dragons all mafia like? Are other shifters like that? There’s literally no back story for anything just conversations about dinner.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. The characters were likable, and the plot was interesting enough to keep me invested. I really do think that it needed a good editor to go in and help pare down the story a bit. Some things seemed repetitive. Because the same type of situations kept reoccurring and the MMC wasn't taking action, it made him come across as a very inneffective alpha and wasn't as believable as the leader of a clan of hundreds.

wtf what that? also 800+ pages??? why. no communication/miscommunication trope. starts with the fmc who is visiting her mom for the summer. she meets the mmcs off page and it starts with her at the clubhouse with her friend talking about how she's pregnant and she was told that she's the fated mate of the MMC but doesn't really know what that means because dragons are info hoarders basically. she was going to tell him that she was pregnant but the clubhouse ends up getting raided and another girl (OW)from The Clubhouse stops FMC during this tells FMC that OW is going to be the mmc's mate and that they've been sleeping together and he is lying to her. even show the FMC a bite mark that she had on her neck (from rough sex by someone else not mmc) saying it was a mate mark. instead of FMC verifying any of this information with anyone in the clan she just leaves town NY the next day to Atlanta. MMC gets arrested for 7 years for drug charges. Gets out fucks everyone but wanted FMC as he nevwr rejected her but thought about it because he knows hes a loser and not good for her. FMC doesnt know. Son is now 9yo showing shifter aggression signs of 1st shift. told to take Son to MMC so he can help with shift and be with family clan. Son meets MMC. FMC tells MMC what OW told her then told she was lied too. OW banned from clubhouse because she's still chasing the dudes including mmc. side story about gun running useing a autobody shop but switching to shifter liquor trade instead. repetitive.

all of that in the 1st 10%

oh and MMC has a evil twin.

DNF 33%

I am bored. The OW drama has happened twice now. We’re only at 33% and there’s another entire Part that I’m still not even near.

So I came here to see if it got better. Huge thanks to all the honest reviewers who are going to save me a lot
of wasted time. I’ve got plenty of other books to read instead.

The saddest thing of all? That are at least two authors in this pen name. You’d think one of them might have said “huh, we’re just repeating the same thing over and over” or idk “this alpha doesn’t act like a fated mate.”

Sigh

*I had to come back because you have GOT to be kidding me.

I wanted to see what the reason was for having two parts, so I did a little skimming.

I have been reading romance books since I was a preteen in the 90s, and I have NEVER come across a male lead who, upon finding out his MATE was taken hostage:

Took a nap and didn’t even start planning on how to get her back until so many hours had passed, that the FMC’s besties was:
- called
- booked a ticket
- flew to the state
- drove another 3 hours to get to lakeview

Are you f’ing kidding me?!

And this dude is a dragon alpha?

My 30lb dog is more alpha than him.

I usually try not to be so scathing, but come on. The premise was so good, and it was just ruined.

DNF 33% in. I just couldn’t keep going. I agree with other reviewers that Ace didn’t really live up to the Alpha expectations from other books. He is indecisive, slow to react and doesn’t have much backbone. He allowed the OW and his brother to cause trouble and just kept giving them chances. After the second time I’m just giving up.

DNF @ 72% - over the top melodramatic soap opera in book form

I am somewhere around page 500 of 702 and I am bored as all get out. To be fair, there are enough tropes and storylines in this to support at least two if not three full books. Unfortunately the author decided to smash all of her ideas into a single repetitive neverending nightmare of excessive melodramatic complexity. I don't even like the characters at this point since they all seem to have their brains set on extreme battery save mode (only the bare essentials work). I usually try to parse out more details and include at least some positive but I can't find it in me for such a poorly contrived book.

Meeh. If it wasn't so repetitive and shallow, I might have enjoyed it more, but for this length, I was hoping for more, rather than the same three scenes looping over and over and over.

In a fated mate story sleeping with anyone else after being with your mate, claimed or not, is absolutely cheating. It should also be in the TW. Even if it’s only listed as gray area cheating, it should still be there.

I’m only at 17% and I’m bored with it. So many reviewers have listed this story as dragging and repetitive but none of them give full spoilers. I will do my best to give bullet point spoilers so NO ONE else wastes their time or money on this useless and pointless story. The reason why I’m going to do this for this book is because this is the third book I’ve started with this author where it is basically the same story. I also bought quite a few more that are just waiting for me to get to them but that might not happen as I am so thoroughly turned off by this author’s lack of creativity between books. I mean if you are going to keep writing shifter secret baby rejected mate stories then at least TRY to be more original in the drama of each book!!

Anyway, stay tuned as I will update as I go. But this will take me a while as it is so freaking boring already.

It was okay but I feel like a huge chunk of it could be taken out and the story would have been better. The other woman drama was over the top and way over used. I feel like there was no romance between the main couple even though this was suppose to be a second chance romance book…. Also the MMC is described to have blonde hair but the cover art shows dark hair…. Make it make sense.

Ace is one hot alpha! I loved how he cared for Harley and their son. He stepped up and did what he needed to be an amazing dad, partner and alpha. This was an amazing dragon shifter story. It was a longer story than I anticipated but I enjoyed this story so much!

For me the main appeal of the fated mates trope is that the couple lock in on each other and are repulsed by anyone else.

Spoilers: At 6% you find out that he slept around after he got out of prison, especially with the woman who mistreated Harley. To me, this is cheating. Super disappointed because I had even read the trigger warnings and cheating wasn’t listed. I knew immediately that Harley was the one who orchestrated their break up. Skimmed through the book and it was predictable. What kind of fated mates story is this? I’m glad I borrowed and didn’t buy it.

Disappointed !

I’ve read this Author for years and have read many of her books. This book had a good start. This was a rinse, lather and repeat that was overdone with 700 plus pages and I had to skim through the last 15% because I just wanted it to end so badly. There were too many times I wanted to DNF but I pushed through. There were many grammatical errors. The female character Blakey was a nuisance and you kept letting her win. In the end she just gets carted off in handcuffs…again. Complete letdown. The ending was chaotic and rushed with the big finale between the two brothers and the “set up” in the end just made the FMC look like a total idiot. I was looking forward to this book but was very disappointed.

when disbelief takes you out of the story

The story started well, but then it started dragging and I started skipping pages.
1. It became to contrived and drawn out between the two bothers
2. After everything the mfc went through given her relationship with her mother, I don’t believe she would have gone without security. The attempt to draw out the drama once again and it just made the story aggravating. Skip! Skip!
3. GSW by law must be reported by the hospital. Skip, skip, done.
Sometimes the writing is so good then other times it goes sideways.

This book is in serious need of an editor. There were far too many instances (especially in Part 2) in the book where names were wrong, sentences made no sense and words were missing. Also, once Ace had found his fated mate, there's no way his Dragon would have let him sleep with someone else—especially not that lying slut, Blakley. Yet he not only sleeps with her, he sleeps with random "shifter chasers" as well. The only thing that kind of, in the teeny, tiniest way makes it okay (for me at least) is that Harley isn't celibate either... Though she only has 2 or 3 boyfriends to Ace's numbers. I don't care if some of you view that as spoilers... That kind of crap ticks me off and is a *huge* reason why I don't read rejected mate books—not that this was one of those, she's never rejected. They just get separated due to lies and Ace's lazy stupidity. My one final complaint is that Ace was the weakest, whiniest Alpha I've ever read about. His whole, woe-is-me attitude got annoying after a while. Normally I enjoy Roxie Ray books, but this one was so not it for me.

I was suckered into this book purely because of the cover which I still really like. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the book. Honestly I am not sure why I finished it. I was pretty much done with everything by the 50% mark and the last 10% of the book was absolutely terrible. It made me wish I had never read it even though it is a HEA.

My main issue with the book is that it is extremely repetitive. This is also why the book gets 2 stars instead of 3. I think that the page count could have easily been cut in half with a thorough editing. It really did feel like I was reading about the same issue/conflict/conversation over and over just repackaged slightly differently. If the repetition is mild I can usually deal with it but this was way over the top. Even the spicy scenes felt extremely repetitive.

Some minor things that just bugged me:
1. Harley nicknames the male lead Steph.
2. Harley is...not very smart. Very nearly in TSTL territory.
3. The drama with Harley's mom.
4. Harley's confrontations with Blakely. Every single one of them was eye roll worthy.
5. The challenge fight with Sean. It was absolutely terrible.

Things I liked:
1. Dylan needing his father to help him learn how to shift.
2. Cassidy and Striker's relationship. I liked them better than Harley and Ace to be honest.
3. Shifter booze company.
4. Dragon Shifters.
5. Fated mates.

All in all. I am not sorry I read this and I might be willing to pick up another book by this author if it comes my way. However I will be much more proactive about dropping it if the writing is anywhere near as repetitive as this one.

I wanted to like it. I really did. If it had been half as long, the characters had full brains, and the dragons had moral compasses, I might have.

The list of “trigger topics” at the start of the book should have been a clue that this collective writing project was a means for who could write the most provocative dribble. I sometimes wondered if it was a competition.

The characters acted more like teenagers than 30 year old adults- “I will fix it” should have applied to the book. How many times can you get duped? For people who ran successful businesses, they had zero common sense. It felt like nearly everyone was an emotional mess. The 9 year old was the only one who acted his age and honestly, he was more put together than the adults.

The plot repeated itself so many times it got boring. Fight, kiss and make up, kidnap someone, fight again, more kissing, another crime, rise and repeat.

I managed to skim to the end. Predictable of course. I won’t be reading anything else by this author group.

This book is a solid 4.5 stars for me, and I wish we could give half-star ratings.

This was my first dragon shifter romance, and I really liked it! Reminded me a bit of an MC book (which I love!). Some of the tropes that really work for this small town romance are forced proximity, fated mates, found family, and second chance. The FMC is a strong, "I've done it on my own, I can do it again" character that lets the romance build a solid foundation instead of the insta-love or fainting damsel that some stories rely on. The MMC, while possessive and leaning into the "touch her and die" trope, fully owns his faults, which meshes so well with the FMC. Probably one of my favorite things is how (while not all the time) the main couple has conversations rather than leaning into the miscommunication trope for the sake of drama.

The main antagonist of the story was well done, and the revelations throughout the story were built in well, so it wasn't just a "we're off to beat the BBEG" in a 200-page story.

Some of the things I didn't love about the story, but aren't bad... just not my flavor -
***POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW*** (nothing discussed specifically in detail but it's still spoiler adjacent so I wanted to tag it just in case)

I don't tend to like OWD (other woman drama), but in some parts of this story, it really worked (I felt like the introduction and a few interactions actually gave the story an interesting layer and let the FMC show her strength while also letting the MMC prove his loyalty and work on building trust with the FMC). What I didn't love was how the OWD was reintroduced consistently after about the halfway point into the story where it seems like that is resolved, and how after some seemingly final things in this trope line it seemed the MMC was blatantly ignoring that and deliberately putting himself into situations, which seemed very out of character both from his past experiences and his current decisions and actions.

Parallel to that, it felt like some of the choices made by both the FMC and MMC were very out of character for them based off of what was going on in the story (i.e. bad decisions leading to avoidable plot points had they not made the seemingly out of character choices for the circumstances) towards the end of the book rather than the beginning. Specifically, several of the interactions in the last 100ish pages of the book seemed very out of character for what had been established, and I personally think that detracts from the story a little when you have such strong established characters who seem to be healing and working together only to fall apart and make ooc decisions late in the book.

The first half of this book is SOLID, and I loved it. It has 2 major plot lines that worked pretty well together to create just enough drama and tension for a good while not overly dramatic story. I feel like this book would have worked better about 100-125 pages shorter. The story got a bit cyclical in the "event happens, reaction, conclusion" pattern for about the last 200 pages, and while I didn't lose interest because it was still relevant to the story I did start to get antsy for the book to wrap up (see comments about bad/ooc choices).

*** SPOILERS OVER***

Overall, I enjoyed this book! It's a long read, but really very sweet and I love some of the directions that the author went with the characters (specifically deviating from "overbearing alphahole MMC" because he's a shifter and the "helpless, simpering damsel in distress" FMC).

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
