I began in the poverty of a two-bedroom home, with big dreams and low self esteem. And curiosity as my lone asset. Borrowing $1,000 from my Mom I founded and took one business to 400 employees by the time I was 26. I built another company into 6 states. At the same time I led a nonprofit expansion into 53 countries and added over a thousand staff. All in my 20’s and 30’s.
On the tough outside, I’m a shoot first, ask questions later type of guy. But inside, I still feel that imposter syndrome of a little boy growing up without any hope.
Others explain my work clearer. Former Secretary of HUD, Dr. Ben Carson, calls my writing “profound, refreshing.” Famed podcaster and pastor Paul VanderKlay says I’m “a doer, not a pontificator.” Navy SEAL and US Congressman Dan Crenshaw says I am “a leader and a truth-teller…a businessman, yes, but also a philosopher and a scholar…someone who has actually bothered to think original thoughts, a rarity in today’s literature.”

Not Worth Your Time
This book droned on for………ever! Author kept bringing Jesus Christ up, but then would slant back towards the 9 Steps as the key to success. While using incomplete sentences galore, the author would keep trying to sound wise, but would take wisdom from elsewhere and attempt to make it his own (No man can serve two vows…WHAT!?). I kept trying to find something worthwhile in this book, but after reading the whole thing, I have come up empty. If you’re going to build a life of meaning, skip this time sink. Rick Walker might have built businesses, but perhaps he should stick to that and skip the art interpretation and philosophizing.

Rick Walker’s 9 Steps to Build a Life of Meaning is far more than meets the eye. Rather than prescribing readers a stale and forgettable self-help formula which promises to be simple, this book takes a revolutionary approach in proclaiming that nothing worth doing is easy. The titular nine steps are strikingly nontraditional; examples include “choose one worthy enemy” and “give away what you want to keep.” Employing a reader-friendly format brimming with bullet points and featured quotes, the text focuses on the behavioral examples of great men of history, with a particular focus on Alexander the Great and Jesus Christ. Though 9 Steps was written with young men in mind, women could easily benefit from the sage advice within its pages, as well. Perhaps the crux of the book’s message can be summed up with the following quote from Chapter Eight: “The effort you give today determines your forever.” This is a can’t-miss read for anyone hoping to find meaning in his or her life.

Walker is described as a philosopher and writes like one. This is not a book where you will find clearly presented action steps. Walker shares the lessons he has learned through experiences and he tells many of those experiences. His steps are presented within the context of story. He has a very imaginative way of communicating, one that I found required concentration to understand what he was saying. He often writes with incomplete sentences and frequently uses flowery language. Here is an example: “What could I learn by blending a drop of courage into a cup of competence?” (3395/4348)
This is a book for readers who would appreciate a round about way of communicating truth. While he draws from a variety of religious disciplines, there is an emphasis on Jesus Christ near the end. There are definitely life lessons to learn by reading this book. It just may take a little more contemplation and thought than one would normally think required in a book of this type.

Amazing insight on how to find direction and meaning in life!
Rick shares the 9 steps to build a life of meaning through lessons he learned from his own life experiences and the stories of history. He learned from mistakes he made in his thinking about decisions he made in life and approach’s. The steps he shares are real and not easy but essential for a life of meaning. Some of perspectives I had never heard before and were very insightful.

There are books that exert an unbelievable pull, and this one is no exception. It is brimming with wisdom and insight. Much of my copy is highlighted in vibrant colors. Once I delved into it, I felt compelled to continue reading. This was primarily due to the fresh perspective it offered, presenting information from an unexpected angle. I found myself pondering concepts like the importance of finding a worthy adversary. Then the follow up which made me nod with understanding, that as he writes, "Enemies are more often desires and habits than people." Or in another particular insightful thought put forth that as the author notes, “hate is not the opposite of love. Proper hate is the fulfillment of love.” Initially, such statements gave me pause. I found myself mulling over what was being presented, and with further reading getting greater contextual understanding, making each bit of advice offered more impactful and resonant.
This book opened my eyes to a new approach to building a path toward success. It invites readers to reflect, to sit with its insights, and allow them to marinate. This is what it did for me.

I began the book with high hopes. It is indeed full of optimism. On the cover, Ben Carson’s two-word description of the book’s message proclaims, “Triumphantly hopeful!” How could I not be expectant?!
The first chapter/principle is titled “Choose One Worthy Enemy.” I understood Walker’s premise, but yeesh, his application of the old adage “some things are worth fighting for” was a bit much:

Add to that the incessant self-aggrandizement that permeated the first chapter and a half, and it was just too much for me. I gave up.
I didn’t want to give up, but life’s too short, and there are too many books to read. I often have reader regret when I give up on a book. I underlined some thoughtful and provocative points in the material I read. I was hopeful because the book hinted at faith in Christ. However, this sentence in chapter two made me question who exactly Christ was to the author:
The point he makes is that we shouldn’t deceive ourselves in thinking we are equal to our superiors. But in making this point, he equated Jesus Christ with Krishna in one sentence. He also equated Jesus with a mythological god.
Walker is undoubtedly successful as a businessman. But i think I’m going to build a life of meaning on principles laid down by Jesus.

The 9 Steps To Build A Life Of Meaning is a powerful, and shocking read. Before diving into the book, the graphic on the book cover was a bit confusing. The author hints to why it was chosen in the very beginning and points the reader to another section of the book for more detail.
The author is not about goal setting and business cliches. His perspective is different because of his lived experiences most of us will never know – it’s from the inner core experiences of the war on terror in 2009, being sent a gruesome video of a comrade being beheaded so when he says the books about start with a goal, he dispels that immediately to say choose one worthy enemy and start there, your enemies and problems that break your heart because that has more meaning than goals. It’s more than a mere slap in the face to wake up and take life more seriously.
This book is filled with drops of wisdom throughout, and not just his own. It will certainly give you a different perspective, but readers are called to not just sit back and read the words, but rather to take action towards something different and better, to step up.
I wasn’t prepared for how this book began, and I wasn’t expecting the insights and perspectives of the author. Parts were shocking, disturbing, and other parts inspiring and uplifting, and through all of it, calling us to be more and to do more and not just for ourselves.

This book really gave me a boost. It’s written in a way that makes you want to sit up, take stock of your life, and actually do something about it. I loved that it’s not just big ideas and pep talks, each chapter leaves you with clear steps you can actually try, which made it feel practical and doable. This book really got me thinking about how I’m spending my time and energy. I appreciated how clear and practical the steps were, each chapter ends with concrete actions, which made it feel doable instead of just inspirational talk. I also liked the focus on building purpose rather than chasing quick bursts of motivation, and the bonus tools were genuinely useful. The stories felt authentic, coming from real-life experience rather than just theory, which made the advice hit harder.
That said, there were a few spots where the message felt a bit repetitive, and some of the “pick your enemy” language came across a little too intense for my personal taste. I get that it’s meant to light a fire under you, but sometimes I wanted more encouragement and less battle talk. Rick Walker uses personal stories as well as artwork and examples from past and present leaders to suggest 9 steps to build a better life. Be sure to give yourself time to read 9 Steps to a Meaningful Life so that you can spend time in reflection and pondering. The book is written with depth and insights you will want to give yourself plenty of quiet time to contemplate. I made the mistake of a short timeframe to read this book, and I feel I will need to reread it to fully understand all of the nuances. That being said, I feel that the book was a little repetitive and wordy in places. I enjoy books that are a little more concise and straightforward. Overall, an impactful book.

So I dove into this thinking it’d be another macho type of self-help, and I was pleasantly surprised. This book brings substance, strategy, and a refreshing dose of introspection. The idea of picking a "worthy enemy" threw me at first, but it’s not really about a toxic rivalry but about having clarity on what you’re fighting for (or against), whether it’s distraction, doubt, or complacency. Some of the messaging is tailored toward a very specific audience which are men looking for high-impact transformation, often through a leadership lens. If you’re not into the “warrior mindset” vibe, you might wish for more balance or nuance. That said, if that is your vibe, the book hits like a clean punch of focus and purpose. If it suits you, it's pretty good.

I won’t lie to you, I bought it because of that magnificent cover. I can’t deny it. But I stayed for the content.
I always love when a book starts with a good biography of the author before diving in, and this one had a great one right at the beginning.
What really hooked me was Step 5: Joy Requires Pain. It’s not always about physical pain, I've always believed that everything meaningful requires sacrifice. The bigger the reward, the greater the cost. The author put that idea into words better than I ever could.
After reading this, you’ll walk away with tools, not just quotes. This isn’t theory, he’s a trader who understands sacrifice, loss, and more importantly, how to overcome. As he says, "an easy life is a selfish wish."

I was at first thrown by the opening sequence of a party of "successful" people the author attended. It was filled with all things immoral and empty. Then I encountered a belief that hatred has its time and place. This is not your normal self-help book. It challenges the reader in its boldness and honesty.
Rick Walker chooses to leave the party and fly back home to his wife and children. He chooses to act in a way that upholds what is important to him. I recommend this book. It makes you think about what is important to you, and I like that it depicts a masculinity that is upright and honorable.

Rick Walker wrote a great book. It was very well researched. This book gives some information to lift you self esteem. Rick Walker gives information on how to jumpstart your day with clarity. Rick Walker gives some downloads for mental fortitude. This is to help build up your self confidence. There is also good information to help become a leader, and to instill this into the people who work for you and your family. He also gives more information to turn your thinking into power and to help you become better at what you do and not to be afraid. I give this book a 5-star rating. I definitely hope to hear more from the author. I definitely recommend this book to others given the chance.

Well. This sure was something. Man talks about his life, and how it tends to kick you in the groi n for daring to have ambition. Frankly, relatable. Yet he kept on trying. And things have eventually started going in his favour. That's inspiring, I guess. Book's full of good quotes by successful people and examples. A looot of parallels were drawn with Alexander the great. In an illustrative way, it worked. But did not help me to relate to the grandiose situations (like campaigning) or the author all that much. I'm just trying to uh, unlock my mind, not build an empire.

I found this to be a great book for men and there was a lot to digest between the pages. Overall, I didn’t think all nine steps applied in my personal life, but the trajectory of them makes sense and I appreciate what they have to offer for them. I found it to be helpful to not only change my own mindset, but also to fight the “inner self” where your mind is constantly fighting against you. I would highly recommend this to someone who is trying to get their life back on track and on the right path.
