My friend C. offered me this volume – so old that there is no copyright date. The book, which had been extensively chewed by mice, at first seemed to be advice about running a girls school. On closer examination, it proved to be perverse Victorian spanking pornography. (Somehow the mice had recognized – either with delight or puritanical disgust – the contents of this book.)

And it’s an epistolary novella, perhaps my favorite literary form!

Opening at random:

I have been told by the marquis that this young officer (for he is not above two and twenty) is remarkably fond of being whipped by women. She assured me she knew for certain that he could not enjoy any woman completely without having his posteriors tickled smartly with a good birch rod during the amorous conflict. What an unaccountable thing in so young a man!
