Derek Ailes is a demented post-apocalyptic science fiction and horror author serving his readers one plateful of horrific terror after another. He is the mastermind behind several horror anthologies including Musings From A Demented Mind and Catfurnado, Zombies and One Killer Doll. He recently ventured into the vast superhero universe with his first comedy/horror novel The Undead Pool.
Derek openly admits that he is a nerd. He reads comic books and graphic novels along with watching every DC and Marvel television series, cartoon, and movie. His favorite series are Deadpool, X-men, The Avengers, Superman, Batman, Flash and The Justice League.
Derek resides in the small town of South Haven, Indiana where he cranks out one horrific tale after another. His neighbors both fear and respect him, because they don't know what horror madness he will unleash upon them. He spends his weekends hanging out with horror icons and promoting his work. He is currently working on his latest horror masterpiece.
A series of twelve short stories all telling differing, original and delightfully disturbing tales with enough irony and plot twists to keep things fresh. The tales cover most of the speculative fiction bases; science fiction, classic horror and all kinds of supernatural. There are also a couple of classic style tales in there so well written they are worthy of Richard Matheson or Ray Bradbury.
The collection has something for everyone (and by that I mean the type of reader whose attention is captured by a title like “Zombie Command”). For me Gargoyle’s Curse and Candy Factory (demonic gummy bears on Halloween, what more could you want) are my two favourites with Zombie Twister coming in just behind. But they’re all good, not a weak apple in the bunch.
11 great stories and one good story— Zombie Command Gargoyle’s Curse The Candy Factory The Hookup Stuffed With Beans This is Heavy Metal Brave Zombie World Cachildrun It’s A Sugar Thing The Night Crew Shark Transporter Zombie Twister— the good story was It’s A Sugar thing
Though the stories included in this anthology are brief and self-contained, they offer an ideal short read before bedtime. On the whole, the characters in Derek Ailes stories, are thinking people whose curiosity, or circumstances, leads them to take actions that make sense, causing them to do what they feel they have to do in the given situation. Not all of these decisions are the correct choice. As with most collections of stories, individual readers will like some more than others, but there is such a wide selection of different tales, each with a twist, or in many cases, a sting, in the tail, (tale), there are many, if not all, that will appeal to every reader. A fine, well written collection of horror stories.
I am a sucker for horror stories. I more or less grew up on R.L. Stine Goosebumps, Fear Street stories and even Christopher Pike. So I started reading Zombie Command: A Horror with great anticipation and I wasn't disappointed. The book has 12 different stories, which means that you might end up enjoying more than others but for me I liked all twelve of them. All of them were self-contained and ranged from sci-fi, to classical horror, and such. There are zombies in space, gargoyles and even haunted gummy bears. Zombie Commander: A Horror is a very good read especially before bedtime. Don't blame me if some of the horrors end up haunting your nightmares ;)
Note: Same review has been posted on Amazon US too.
The twisted parts inside us all are delighted by zombie command. Some of the stories are satisfying because they successfully depict the terror one would experience from being in a real life nightmare. Some original ideas mixed with classic horror, and even a little futuristic technology. Whatever you are looking for Zombie Command has it, and it is probably going to die gruesomely. A king-esq collection of sickly satisfying shorts. The cachildrun is especially creepy what with the Donnie Darko rabbit eared monster smiling with a full gut of puppies. A must read.
My favorite part of the book was how the majority of the stories were centered in Indiana towns. Having lived in the area myself, it hit a little close to home, making the stories even more real and terrifying for me.
