The debate surrounding hand drawing versus computer-generated imagery has become a hot topic. Having grown up with computers, today's interior design and architecture students are extremely adept at creating computer imagery, but often lack confidence in their freehand sketching skills, or do not know how to sketch at all. Sketching, and the careful observation that it entails, is essential for the successful development of the next generation of designers. Forty-five step-by-step exercises take the student from the simple three-dimensional forms of furniture, to interiors, to complex building exteriors and cityscapes. Technical topics covered include tools, line weights, perspective, proportion, composition, shading, serial views, and context. Exercises are illustrated with beautiful sketches specially created by the author. Sketching for Architecture and Interior Design is an indispensable and practical guide for students wishing to master the art of looking and sketching.
A course book on sketching techniques for architecture and interior design. A lesson-based book, in which the exercises increase in complexity, from simple forms to complex compositions. Typical elements of drawing are explained, including tools, line weight, perspective, proportion, composition and others.
The illustrations for each exercise show the mastery that one is working towards when practicing. This book tends to promote the style that has been developed by the author, but it persuades with techniques that are effective in depicting architectural and interior design motifs. There should be something for anyone in this course, even the most accomplished.
This is an amazing guide to not just sketching, but observing and imagining through sketching. I am at the end of the book now, been doing all exercises everyday for the past couple of months, and must say, my sketching has improved. I went to architecture school, and they didn't teach sketching the way Stephanie does. A great effort on her part. The language is very simple and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to all aspiring architects or interior designers or anyone who wishes to brush up their existing sketching skills.
