The philosophical depth, psychological insight, and spiritual guidance of A Course in Miracles have been an extraordinary treasure of wisdom for millions of readers worldwide since its original publication in 1976. The reason for its popularity is simple: It deals directly with the root causes of human suffering and proposes the means through which we can return to our natural state of wholeness and peace.
This volume, beautifully illustrated with more than 125 photographs by award-winning photographer Jane English, brings together the most evocative and inspirational selections from the Course and contains the entire texts of three previously published books, Accept this Gift, A Gift of Healing, and A Gift of Peace. Exceptionally poetic and moving, these succinct, powerful passages readily stand by themselves as potent capsules of profound inner wisdom, and as tools for our hearts and minds in the wider world.
This book was published back in 1983 and is a wonderful compilation of three books: "Accept This Gift"; "A Gift of Peace" and "A Gift of Healing".
Marianne Williamson does the FOREWARD in which she writes:
"Just as there are stars and superstars, there are books and then Great Books. Within the Great Book category, there are THE BOOKS, the great spiritual source materials which contain the words that reveal the highest truths. They are the Bible, the Koran, the Talmud, the I Ching, and others. For many of us, A COURSE IN MIRACLES is one of these. It opens the heart to healing and hope, enlightenment and love."
There is also a wonderful INTRODUCTION which explains where the Course came from and also the best way to approach this book.
This book is made up of quotes based on topics in three areas General, Peace and Healing.
Some of these topics in the General area include: THE MIND, THE WORLD AND TIME, TRUE IDENTITY.
Some topics in the Peace area are: CHANGING YOUR MIND ABOUT YOUR MIND, THE END OF CONFLICT, THE WAY TO PEACE IS OPEN.
Topics in the Healing area are: THE DREAM OF HEALING, THE CAUSES OF THE DREAM, THE MEANS OF AWAKENING.
This is a truly beautiful book and a wonderful way to experience the Wisdom and Guidance of A COURSE IN MIRACLES.
As a disclaimer, I only read through Page 66 in this book before I took the advice of a YouTube video (a video about how to read more books per year) I recently watched and stopped reading this book - a "first" for me!
On Page 1, the following is written: "Although written in Christian language and style, A Course in Miracles clearly embodies the perennial wisdom found at the core of the world's great religions." Do not allow this statement to lead you astray. Although there are certainly some truths to be found in this book (truths that can also be found within the Christian tradition), this book cannot and must not be confused as a Christian book. This book will mention Christian "buzz words" like "grace" or names of the Trinity, but this does not make the overall message of this book Christian.
In the first page of the Foreword, a reviewer wrote that, "there are books and then Great Books. Within the Great Book category, there are THE BOOKS, the great spiritual source materials which contain the words that reveal the highest truths. They are the Bible, the Koran, the Talmud, the T Ching, and others. For many of us, A Course in Miracles is one of these." That is a profound elevation of this book to a place it belongs nowhere near! I found this book to be mind-numbing - nauseating, even - consistently repeating a generic "mumbo jumbo" of words with the intention of sounding enlightened. For example, on Pages 65 - 66, it reads, "You will fear what you attack. / Safety is the complete relinquishment of attack. / Because your attack thoughts will be projected, / you will fear attack. / And if you fear attack, / you must believe that you are not invulnerable. / Attack thoughts therefore make you vulnerable in your own mind, / which is where the attack thoughts are."
As a Christian, I profess that the Bible contains the ultimate spiritual truth. That being said, I still plan to read more about various other spiritual practices, to include those of East Asia like the Dharmic religions. There are certainly truths to be found in studying them, and I am sure my time (and yours) would be better spent reading primary sources of those traditions like the Tao Te Ching, the Rigveda, or the Guru Granth Sahib (or analyses of those primary sources) rather than reading this book. This book is very escapist in nature and talks about things like overcoming the ego, but you would be much better off reading genuine / original Buddhist literature if you'd like to learn more about developing that sort of mindset. This book is discount philosophy!
Again, many truths may be found in the various spiritual practices from around the world. Love of neighbor, almsgiving, meditative contemplation, anti-materialism, etc. are all pieces of the puzzle, but the ultimate truth can be found in the love of Christ, God Incarnate who sacrificed Himself to heal the divide between God and humans. The escapism that embodies the character of this book (and, from what I know, embodies Buddhism, too) does not offer Salvation. The true illusion is the idea that life itself is an illusion. Life is a gift from God; let us use it to serve one another and grow closer to Him.
I pray that we may all come to know the love of Christ in this life.
This book has changed my life it is so consistent with abstract thoughts it really makes you think! Such a good read no matter if its the 5th time! Forever loving this book!
It's been a long while since I read this one. I really liked certain passages but I would warn folks that it is definitely a Christian book. Because this book is a shorted version of the book A Course in Miracles it seems a little strange in a few parts. Although if you are openminded to all, there is good be found within the cover.
They keep it simple with easy to understand language about "Big" ideas. I think next to "The disapearence of the Universe" It is the most easy to understand book about, "A course in Miacles". The purity of feeling I get from this book is immeasurable. I suppose it tends on preference weather you will like it or not or weather you choose to believe in its ideas.
A great book! Ms. Vaughan makes it easy to grab the precious nuggats from the Course in Miracles. You can read as little or as much as you want and take in the message. I highly recommend it.
