In Book 1 of the Sherlock Jones, Jr. Detective Series, Ed Dunlop’s Sherlock Jones: The Assassination Plot presents Jasper Jones and Penny Gordon, an adventurous pair of friends who have stumbled onto a diabolical plot: professional assassins are planning to get rid of their state’s governor. Their ingenious and heroic efforts to save the governor win Jasper the nickname, Sherlock Jones, and begin the continuing adventures of Jasper and his friends.
I bought this book, hoping to give it to one of my grandsons. I was quite disappointed with it.
The story itself is very unrealistic - with an unbelievably brainy sixth grade boy (e.g. he memorizes all his textbooks at the beginning of the school year). He and his friend, solve and foil an assassination plot on the governor - again, some of it is really hard to believe - although, some of the means of deducing things/figuring out clues was creative. I did appreciate that they didn't lie to help them find things out, and I did appreciate that they repeatedly went to the local police, who failed to believe or listen to them. But in my thinking, they should have then logically gone to their parents, instead of doing all these things on their own.
Additionally, I found the book too descriptive, in places, of "evil." It was unnecessary and inappropriate in a children's book, geared to middle-schoolers. e.g. the description of a museum scene (with wax figures) of a Mohawk warrior "brutally scalping...a white settler....while his wife and children looked on in helpless terror." Goes on to talk about the blood dripping down the man's face, and even though it explains that this was paint, it's not the kind of picture I want to encourage children to think on.
This is the first in a series, and I won't be reading any more.
It was meh...was hoping it would be great for my 11 year old, buts it's pretty far fetched and the kids have some behaviors I surely wouldn't want my 11 year old thinking about or doing....and he's so impressionable at this age. Was hoping for more Chris8influence, but I felt like the references to God were throw in occasionally because the kids were really straying from good behavior.
This is an Amazing mystery story about how an eleven-year old boy and his friend solve a mystery and foil an assassination plot by two criminals! It is truly imagination-rich must-buy!
While it was engaging, this book was not spectacular. The detective was incredibly (in the truest sense of the word) smart. The ending was kind of anticlimactic, and the author went to great lengths to share evidence for creation. I am not against giving evidence for creation if it is a natural outflow if your plot, but this author forged it into his plot.
The Assassination Plot is a great start to this fun mystery series! Jasper (aka, Sherlock) and Penny make a wonderful duo in TAP, and side characters such as Officer Bill and Officer Clark are also fun to watch (especially when they are outsmarted by a kid). Overall, this is a well-written, short-ish story that I'd recommend for anyone ages 10+!
This series has different mysteries than any other kids' mystery series I've read. (Most are... you know... the missing homework and that kind of thing. This series has interesting mysteries!)
Though the plot is good, the characters are pretty flat. So, meh.
