In the tenth book of the series, armies are gathering. It's time for Thraxas and Makri to march back towards Turai. Lisutaris is War Leader, and she trusts Thraxas enough to make him her personal security officer. Captain Thraxas is given the difficult task of outwitting Deeziz the Unseen, the enemy's most powerful sorcerer. He could do with some help from Makri. Unfortunately Makri spends most of her time hiding from the Elf with whom she once had a rather unsatisfactory relationship. Thraxas is relieved to meet a few familiar faces, refugees from Turai, but as he tries to prevent Deeziz from ruining the war effort, he finds himself baffled, outmanoeuvred, and badly in need of beer.
As far as light reading goes this series is the best. My only complaint is that these books seem to be over so quickly, but time flies when your having fun.
First of all - why so short? I needed ten times more!!! I remember now how much I misses these books. Another installment of Thraxas (number one chariot in investigation) story. I enjoyed this book very much - especially the humor. Actually this is what I like the most in these series. Strongly recommend Thraxas books and hope there will be more. Favorite quote of the book: - “I’ve never liked Simnians.” - “That’s the hundredth time I’ve heard you say that,” says Makri. - “It bears repeating.” - “I think it was the first thing I ever heard you say, when I first arrived in Turai. Followed by 'Can you buy me a beer?'” Makri comes to a halt, and scowls. “I just remembered the third thing you said.” - “Which was?” - “If you can’t buy me a beer then take your pointy ears somewhere else, pointy-eared wench.“
If you've not read Thraxas before, start with the first. If you've read this far, you know what to expect. IMO, this is a lesser book--not a gripping storyline, no new terribly interesting characters, an unsatisfying resolution. Nonetheless it's not a complete disaster--it's a decent read with people I'm used to and like, and I'll be all over Thraxas 11 when and if it happens.
(Note: 5 stars = rare and amazing, 4 = quite good book, 3 = a decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. There are a lot of 4s and 3s in the world!)
The united army of the West is marching towards the Orcs to liberate Turai. Beer is in short supply, and the most powerful sorcerer and warriors in the army suffer from embarrassing romantic troubles. Thraxas will have to remain sober to keep them all alive. A hard task given that he's found new friends who can redistribute some of the army's stock.
Initially, reading Thraxas was supposed to be a way to unwind and be entertained while taking a break from studying. Well, now I'm full on binging the series, and I cannot get enough. No schoolwork is getting done. That's ok. These books are great!
The best pulp fiction detective noir series set in a fantasy world. Bar none.
The Orcs have seized Turai. Thraxas and Makri managed to flee with Lisutaris. They have now gathered an army to them and are heading back to re-take Turai. Much comedy ensues.
I hope I don't have to wait too long for the next book.
God, I love this series. It's great, droll comedy. Perfect for when you need a laugh or cheering up! Thraxas may be a fat drunk, but he's Number 1 chariot at investigating!
Great addition to the Thraxas series. Following on after the fall of Turai to the Orc armies, Thraxas is now a refugee looking to regroup with the other humans to make a stand against the Orcs. Very funny and great addition to the series.
I've really enjoyed the Thraxas series, but it felt as though the author was just turning the handle with this latest instalment. No character development and not a hint of a laugh.
