James O'Brien is having a horrible day. He's dropped his car off at a repair place in a bad part of town. While he's there minding his own business he ends up in a bar room brawl with a mouthy homophobic thug.

Officer Scott Brown is the sexy, kind cop who arrives on the scene. He can tell immediately that while James is a geek, but he isn't a criminal, and is most likely just a nice guy caught up in a bad situation. The two of them have an immediate attraction and when Officer Brown gives James a ride home...things heat up.

This takes place before Thanksgiving, which makes it not a Valentine's Day story. And, no, I don't care that it was published on February 13.

The word "dude" is NOT romantic. In any context. EVER.

The 3-year-old kid here read at once infantile (what the hell was up with the baby talk?) and TOO mature (he was overly interested in Jamesssss).

Abusing your power to essentially spy on a guy you hope to date is egregious. And stupid.

Many single parents date, and they don't run background checks on every potential partner. Because. PRIVACY.

They simply spend time with them and get to know them BEFORE bringing them home. Shocking, I know.

Snooping through someone else's phone, finding a private address, and then showing up on the doorstep unannounced isn't cute. It's fucking crazy.

Just cause he makes you pasta and fucks you doesn't mean you have anything in common. Except pasta. And fucking.

I just re-read this to freshen up my brain for the sequel. And I loved it all over again! Now on to the next book for more of Jamesssss, Scott and Troy...

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Now this is my Valentine's Day book!

I am dead serious when I say that I have never been this bummed out before because a book was too short. I want need more of Geek James, Cop Scott and cute-as-pie tyke Troy.

I fucking loved this book. It was way, way too short and I would pay double the price for a sequel.

Highly recommended!

A tip to help you love this book as much as I did: Let yourself believe in the insta-love. (Scott's insta-love to be more precise.) Just throw caution to the wind and do it, no matter how you normally feel. I usually loath insta-love, unless it is a "mate" story. But not here. Go with the flow of the story and lose yourself in the romance. It's worth it!

The author pulled the premise off in this one really well. It could have easily been cookie cutter formula, but the characters were unique enough to make it memorable. James is definitely a geek, but he's no wimpy pushover and I loved that about him. Scott was a big ol' softy underneath the uniform and his insta love for James was pretty charming. The fact that James didn't cave to it right away kept it from being cheesy even though I wanted Scott to have ALL the love right away. James's slightly defensive attitude made the story better and more believable.

This was… not that good.

James meets cop Scott after James was involved in a bar brawl. There is instant attraction (very bad instant attraction I must say) and Scott takes James home.
James has bad experiences with cops and he also said he would never date a guy with a kid. Scott has a 3 year old son. But of course this specific kid is adorable and James is a natural with him.

James goes to dinner at Scott’s, there is instant bonding with the kid, there is some sex, there is a stupid fight and 3 days later they make up.

description

I’m not sure what bothered me more. The fact that Scott did a background check on James and said it was all to protect his son (can anyone say PRIVACY..). Or the fact that Scott’s sister gets a hold of James’ address when Scott is taking a shower and goes to see James behind Scott’s back to tell him to contact Scott. Because that is what you do when your brother has just met a guy, you go all stalker on his ass.

Euhh… just no…

That was such a sweet, fun and easy read. Just what I needed!
If you are in a need for a short, angst free book, (with the sweetest toddler ever!) this one will be the perfect choice!

Thank you Gigi, for a great rec!

Okay, so maybe I liked James because of the name, lol. Nah, he was a great character. They both were. I enjoyed this.

The 3 year old lost his first tooth, and got money from the tooth fairy.

Sorry, I know that is a minor thing, but it stopped me in my tracks.
(if you don't have chidren, or aren't around kids, they don't lose their teeth at 3)

The rest of the story...it wasn't bad, just rushed. Really rushed. And pretty much stopped after the introduction.

Two things I didn't like about this book: the word "dude" and the word "brat." You don't ever refer to a child as a brat when talking to someone that has kids. Other than that, I really liked the story. I would have liked to spend more time with Scott and James. And Troy. And the dog he wanted James to get.

Books involving kids really makes me happy right now. I really dont know why but i seem to enjoy stories with family talks in it. I had fun reading this one becuase of how the author build up the characters and the story itself.

Overall, i think the book was good. There may be some parts lacking like the explanation about James' family and Scott's backstory about his kid. The way the book started also had it good parts. It was like starting the action early on which I think was good.

The main conflict was not that dramatic which was good. The author didn't overwrite the conflict which i think worked wonders.

It was OK. In a few months I probably won't even remember either of the names of the main characters, but it held my interest enough for me to start and finish it in one sitting.

I usually pass on the cop books cause, you know, the ex was a cop and he kind of ruined it for me. This was cute, very sweet, and even though it was insta and there was a kid, I wasn’t bothered by any of it at all.

Everybody knows I hate kids in books. Well, kids that are around TOO much. I get tired of having to read "kid speak" and having to figure out what the Cindy Brady-esque lisps mean. But in this one, the kid didn't bother me at all. He was there just enough to serve his little purpose and that was it. The little bit of drama between the guys felt natural and not at all forced by an author trying to keep the MC's apart. And even though their connection was awfully quick, it was a short story so it kinda HAD to be quick. Right? If it had been longer I might have given it five stars.

DNF @ 32%.

A cop not understanding why someone may be wary of accepting a ride from a stranger seems odd. Scott does go on about how most people are honorable and how James' outlook is grim.

Then of course, when Scott reveals he has a kid, James is like, "but your not married". Apparently kids can only exist inside a marriage. A rather stupid remark from a self proclaimed science guy... guess biology isn't his thing.

But the straw that broke this camel's back was this:

He sounded ashamed as he continued. "We were only married a year and when she got pregnant she wanted an abortion. And that was before she even knew I was gay"

"She sounds wonderful." My sarcasm might have been a little thick."

So, I guess neither of these guys are pro-choice. And James decides a complete stranger's wife is horrible for wanting an abortion, without even knowing her or her reasons.

This was a pretty cute and enjoyable light read. Loved the idea of a cop and geek together, but I sort of felt that James' geekiness faded away and he seemed like just a normal (non-geeky) guy by the end.

What a little gem of a story! As the title suggests, it's about a cop and a geek, and if you are into that sort of pairing, it's definitely worth picking up.
