Book One of The Chattanooga Supernaturals, paranormal romance with claws...
Aaron Drake is nine thousand years old and one of the last remaining European were-dragons. With no female Dragons, his only hope of children lies in his grandmother's dying words. "The Swan Princesses may be the Dragons' only hope."
Sophia Siyanko is the first Swan Princess without at least one brother to take the throne in Aaron's long memory. However, her father chooses her husband when she's twelve, and sets the date for her twenty-fifth birthday. She is sequestered in her father's mansion, raised by governesses and tutors to be the future King's arm candy, and Aaron's options are limited.
But then Sophia escapes her father's compound a few weeks before her twenty-fifth birthday. Determined to escape or die trying, she comes to Aaron for help.
To protect her, he'll have to fight every Swan and Eagle on the planet, most of the Wolves, and all of Faerie.
98,000 words -- full length paranormal romance novel with elements of BDSM.
Warnings: Lots of hot shape-shifter sex, and sometimes the metaphysics forces this mostly vanilla couple into BDSM. There are some rough non-con scenes to punish the bad guys, most of whom totally deserve what they get. Also, a super sexy, hot, weredragon.
Candace Blevins writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, epic fantasy contemporary BDSM romance, and two kick-ass motorcycle club series. She’s published more than fifty books. Candace lives with her husband of twenty-four years and their two teenaged daughters. The family’s beloved, goofy, retired racing greyhounds are usually at her side as she writes, quietly keeping her company. Or sometimes not so quietly.
Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, three different species of vampires, and a variety of other mythological beings exist.
Candace's various paranormal romance series are all sister series to the Only Human series, and give some secondary characters their happily ever after.
Her Dark(ish) Faerie Tale series gives us a close-up and personal look at Queen Mab, and her Dark Underbelly series is, as you’d expect, dark and (if you’re a little twisted) oh-so-yummy.
Her contemporary Safeword series gives us characters who happen to have some extreme kinks. Relationships can be difficult enough without throwing power exchange into the mix, and her books show characters who care enough about each other to fight to make the relationship work. Each couple in the Safeword series gives the reader a different take on the lifestyle.

Don’t get on the wrong side of the Swan Queen…her punishments are HARSH!!
I was in the mood for a good paranormal and put the call out to my friends. Candace Blevins heard the call and gifted me a copy of The Dragon King. Thanks Candace my lovely it definitely was interesting.
Aaron, the Dragon King, has been a tutor and educator to the Swan Princess, Sophia, since she was a baby. He plays a vital role in her understanding of their culture and rules. Sophia has lived a very sheltered existence with her father putting her in a castle that was more like a cage. The Swan King, Raul, lost his wife when she was murdered and decided he couldn’t face it if anything happened to Sophia. When her father plans to marry Sophia off to the horrible Cyrano, she decides that escape is the better option. She heads straight to Aaron knowing that he will protect her.
I liked seeing Sophia and Aaron’s love for each other grow and develop. It is obvious that Aaron only wants Sophia, but it takes a while for Sophia to trust him. She forms some wonderful friendships in the people that she meets and I loved watching Sophia mature and take on her role as Queen.
The story is full of action and adventure. We get to meet shifters including owls, eagles, hawks, rabbits (turns out they do live up to their name when it comes to sex) and the usual lions, leopards, tigers and wolves. Vampires and Faerie also play a pivotal role in getting Sophia placed as Queen to the swans.
There were things that annoyed me and made me a little uncomfortable in this story. My main issue was Aaron’s past conquests. I know he is thousands of years old and never been mated, but Sophia was confronted by numerous ex-lovers and some of them were people close to her. I don’t think Aaron handled it well. Secondly, the scene when Sophia changes to a swan was absolutely gruesome. They do not just change like in other paranormal stories I’ve read, it is graphically explained what she must do to her skin to transform. The explanations were “original” but for the first time in any reading of a paranormal, I was bloody glad I wasn’t one. There were also a few BDSM scenes with humiliation, pain and exhibitionism. I don’t mind an erotic read, but I’m not a huge fan of humiliation as part of it.
I did enjoy their love story and their fight to gain and hold their place as King and Queen of the Dragons and Swans. My overall enjoyment was reduced by the way Aaron’s previous relationships were portrayed and explained. I did not like that Sophia met Aaron’s previous lovers and was exposed to what sort of “play” he got up to…especially that he had been dominated. Those things should have been explained in private so she could deal with it without an audience.
The Dragon King was an interesting story and I have no hesitations on reading more of Candace Blevins paranormal world.
A dragon, wolves, and a princess walk into a cave… Joking aside, buy this book now. The Dragon King kicks off a new series from the kinky author Ms. Blevins. This is a paranormal romance with vanilla erotica, so warns Ms. Blevins. *Looks at Candace*
I don't think that word *whispers* vanilla means what you think it means. To be clear, the sex between the two main characters is erotic and as close to vanilla as you can get when a spanking is included and a flogging with a clit vibrator is involved. But hey, who am I to complain? Gimme gimme gimme!
Aaron Drake is the powerful dragon shifter from the Kirsten O'Shea series. This book is all about him and boy is it fantastic. Once again, I'm hiding under the bed sheet covers to finish reading this book all in one sitting. (Or laying as it may be.) Aaron helped teach the Swan Princess, Sophia, when she was a child and into her teens. He's always loved her and disagreed with how she's being raised. Whilst he understands the reason behind Sophia's father's madness, he wishes it was different. When she comes of age, around her early teens, he is no longer allowed to be around her. When Sophia is about to be married off, decides enough is enough, all hell breaks loose and a war in this world and Summerland may commence because she wants to live her life by her choices. It is Aaron, the Dragon king to the rescue!
The character development in this book is great. I've loved Aaron from the get go and this book only makes me love him more. Sophia is an engaging character too. What I do find is the females in Ms. Blevins books have the same voice. Even though they have different jobs and levels of maturity, they tend to all come across the same. They are kick ass women who think alike. This is not a good or bad thing. It's just something I've noticed and since I like this kind of woman, it works well for me, even when written in first person.
The plot in this book is pretty straightforward. There are no real surprises for the end result. The conflict is as one would expect. What makes this book awesome is the dialog and the journey to the end. The interactions between Aaron and Sophia are hysterical at times. Sometimes, they are frustrating and heartbreaking. There is one incident between the two where trust is broken. For me, I felt Sophia took it too personally, but that is because I'm older and have a different childhood experience. For Sophia, it made perfect sense even if I wanted to smack her upside the head.
The world building in this book is great. I love it because we learn more and more about this world Ms. Blevins seems to live in. All her characters in the different series are tied in one way or another. The six degrees of separation are more like two or three degrees. I love seeing the names of other characters referenced and used in a plausible manners to enhance the story. Learning more about Aaron's history and of the other supernaturals makes me want to urge Ms. Blevins to write faster so I can read about their lives. This is a rich world filled with alpha males, asshats and kick ass heroines.
I did label this book with a BDSM tag not because of the spanking and flogging. I did it because there are a couple of BDSM scenes which are non-con as punishment from a Unseelie Queen. For those who are familiar with Unseelie mythology, be forewarned, the scene is brutal, hot and totally BDSM fantasy. This little taste of Ms. Blevin's non-con BDSM makes me wet and lusting after a BDSM non-con story she'd write someday. Her Safeword series is intense in the SM and impact play. When she plunges into the non-con sexual slave realm, it will be supernova hawt, especially if she mixes it up with m/m, f/m, f/f or ménages. Perhaps Ms. Blevins can be persuaded to write a collection revolving around the Unseelie Queen's dungeon. *hint hint*
This new paranormal erotica is highly recommended to shifter-loving readers who love a happily ever.
*I received an advanced copy. No review was requested. I wrote one anyway.
Driven by grief after the slaughter of his wife and determined to protect his only remaining child and heir, the current Swan King, Raul, sequesters her within the protective walls of the castle. A virtual hostage in her own home, Sophia grows to resent both her confinement and her father’s decisions regarding her future.
Aaron Drake, the Dragon King, has been tutor and friend to the past seven generations of Swan Royalty. Tutoring Sophia from the time she was six years old, he has been her only true friend and link to the outside world. At their last lesson, when Sophia is twelve, he offers her his protection, should she ever need it.
Not wanting to marry the man of her father’s choosing and desperate for the ability to choose her own destiny, she meticulously plans her escape. Hoping all the while that Aaron will honor his promise and protect her.
I’m familiar with Candace Blevins’ Safeword series and really enjoy her style of writing. She has a voice that is distinct and enjoyable. Her characters are intelligent, mature, and make rational choices. There are no TSTL characters here. I loved both Sophia and Aaron individually, though I did have trouble at times with feeling the romantic love they had for each other.
The world building is amazing. She has flawlessly woven kink into the lives of shapeshifters in a very unique and integral way. There is a little bit of everything here, even a pair of deliciously kinky fairy godmothers. I will definitely be reading the next in the series!
Warning *This book is not even remotely “vanilla”. Please read the author’s warning.* Complimentary copy was given by the Author through the BDSM group on Goodreads.
This was a good book. Aaron Drake is nine thousand years old and one of the last remaining European were-dragons. He is the King of Drakes with only two other dragon males and No females. Sophia Siyanko is the first Swan Princess without at least one brother to take the throne in Aaron's long memory. The only way for Aaron to have a family is to mate with the swan princess. The swan king Sophia's father has lock her away in their home for the last twenty-five years and a few weeks before she was to marry someone that she doesn't like. I liked both of the character's in this book Aaron was very patient and understanding toward Sophia teaching her the things that she needs to take over to becoming the swan Queen her father kept her so sheltered that she didn't know anything. This was the first book in a new series to me the book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling and I love reading Ms. Blevins work I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
☆ I received an ARC from Bewitching Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!! ☆
Interesting. That’s the word that initially came to mind when I read this novel.
I will admit that at first, I had a bit trouble get into the feel of this read but as I read further I fell into it quite nicely.
The Dragon King is one of those reads where you can’t help but think, “a dragon and a swan princess? Who would have thought?”.
What an unique combo!!
Aaron Drake is a sexy dragon and one of the last of his kind. With no female prospects to mate and repopulate his dwindling race, his outlook in finding a suitable partner looks pretty slim to none.
Now enter, Sophia Siyanko.
Growing up, Sophia has always been sequestered within the deep confines of the castle, with very strict laws and royal etiquette implemented into her everyday life.
Every so often, Aaron, an old friend and instructor of her father’s was allowed within to visit for teaching lessons, and the two build a bond over the following years.
But, as Sophia grows into maturity and no male heir to take the throne, she is betrothed and at the age of 12 and expected to marry the man of her father’s choosing when she turns 25.
And when fate has her running away to a destiny of her own choosing, and into the rugged arms of Aaron, how will everything turn out?
Can Aaron and Sophia seek the happily ever after that they seek? And with a kingdom on the line and in jeopardy, how will their love survive the tests that are about to come their way? Read and you will find out!
#A sexy, modern concoction of supernatural and universal themes that paranormal romance readers will love and eat up!!
This is a pretty epic romance and book. It twists and turns and tells the whole tale which is refreshing when too many romances end to soon.
What I love about it is that we know almost from the start that they want to be together. No messing around. So, we get oodles of couple time and lots of real conflicts internal and external that they need to overcome to make a love story that can last.
This world is rough. We have a cast of others and this book is gory as hell and the punishments for crossing the lines of power are violently detailed that uses sexual cruelty. This book may not be your gig. It manages to stay just this side of I can handle it for me because the world building is good enough that I accept that the torture is cultural and there wasn't an arousal expected to come from it on the part of the reader. However, I would have liked the book better if these sections were far less graphic and gleeful on the part on the punisher.
The character development of the heroine and heroine are as good as the world building. The struggle to become equals is well done and the love between them true.
I received a free complementary copy from the author, through the BDSM Group, in exchange for an honest review
I've read a few of Candace Blevins Safeword series, and I have liked some, and loved others. This is completely different to those books. Even if you didn't enjoy the heavy scenes and extreme S&M and TPE of Safeword: You can start this fantasy/paranormal series with a clean slate.
Sophia's mother was killed before she was hatched, and as a result, her father, The Swan King, has locked her in a gilded cage to protect her. Sophia has had enough and decides to flee to the only person she knows may help her gain her independence; a man who helped train her, in her courtly duties when she was very young.
Drake is the Dragon King, but the Dragon's are nearly extinct. His only hope is a myth his grandmother shared with him as she died thousands of years ago. The Swan Princess may hold the key to the Dragons survival.
This story was complex, with fantastic world building. Nothing was overlooked while Blevins created the fantasy world full of Shifters, Fae, and vampires. I was completely immersed in every aspect of this world, and there were no gaps in knowledge. It worked in the readers favour, that Sophia needs to be educated on the outside world, as it was the perfect way to educate the reader along side Sophia.
Sophia and Drake start off their relationship slowly, and Drake is patient in assimilating Sophia into her new environment. He doesn't boss her around, just gives her the space to learn and process.
Sophia learns to hold her own, and becomes a formidable and strong woman. It is fascinating to watch her growth in this story, from pampered princess, to regal and strong.
Their romance doesn't feel rushed because they have the background of a friendship, but it does occur over a few weeks (a great deal longer than a lot of the insta-love paranormal romances out there).
Some of the aspects of this fantasy world are a bit kinky. I loved it, because I love kink, and I thought the way that Blevins threw it into everyday life for these beings was brilliant. This book is not straight vanilla, but it is not hardcore BDSM either. No scening, or TPE, just a fair bit of kinky sex.
I really can't sing enough praise for this story, and have every intention of reading any and all of this series. If you're into light to medium kink, exhibitionism, and all types of Animal-Shifters, you will enjoy this story.
I received this book through the BDSM groups TPE read 2 review program. It was free in exchange for my honest review. I am familiar with Ms. Blevins from her Safeword series and must admit I was expecting hardcore BDSM with a twist. I got the twist but not the hardcore. Am I disappointed? Not in the least. This is the story of the Swan Princess Sophia and the Dragon King Aaron Drake. Sophia has been kept prisoner in her home by her father since she was born. Her mother was killed and her father can't handle the thought of anything happening to Sophia. She is not allowed to leave the castle and has no interaction with the outside world. Sophia has known Aaron since she was a child, he was her friend, confidante and first crush. He had been a part of the Swan royal inner circle for many generations. It was his job to educate Sophia and he has tried to protect and care for her since she was born. However, as she becomes a young woman they are no longer allowed to be together. On their last visit together Aaron tells Sophia If she ever needs protection to get word to him. Years later when Sophia escapes the castle she does find Aaron and ask for assistance what follows is a love story in which we see a young naive girl become a leader and a hardened Dragon king become a partner. It is full of ups and downs and at no time did I feel the story was rushed. The world building was amazing! The story contains shifters, fae and a truly imaginative combination of known folklore and the authors ideas. I can't wait to read more in this series. But was it the hardcore BDSM I expected, no. But it wasn't vanilla either. The secondary characters are more then kinky and a little sadistic. The Main characters? Well Sophia and Aaron can make a flogging hot even though it wasn't really sexual. You need to read it to understand I think. I would recommend to everyone who likes kink. I think the Fae Queens are a little to much for my vanilla friends tho. Me, well I'm hooked and can't wait to read the next in the series. 5 stars.
I read Duke & Brain from Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club (spin-off series) first & was in intrigued to find out Aaron's back story as he seemed a mysterious power player.
It was really interesting the dragon & swan shape-shifting lore, history & capasity to learn. Would have loved to delve more into the horse & unicorn gift or more fae gifts. Loved how Sophia handle the trust issue.
The thing that put me off is that all three books have used BDSM to violate, hurt & humiliate in great detail, very little for pleasure. Undecided if I'll cont reading this author.
I'm loving this world created by Ms Blevins! Sophia was much different than I expected. Her transition from sheltered virgin to Queen of the Swans was amazing. The Summer and Winter Queens were fearsome too. And then there is Aaron, the Dragon King. Learning more about his past was shocking at times but his love for Sophia shone through.
This book will make more sense if you read Only Human first since many of the characters appear in both.
This was a very involved and lengthy story and I loved that about it. There were many characters and aspects of this world that were built incrementally. The angst between the main characters was adequately resolved and there was none of that extreme inadequacy that some writers tend to do with their neophyte AND alpha characters. There were MANY types of paranormal beings and powers. I'm definitely keeping and re-reading this story.
DNF - 40% I tried y'all, I really tried. The narrative was clinical. The characters didn't have very much emotional substance for me to be interested enough in their welfare. The pacing felt off to me, especially when the sexual encounters rolled around. I really tried to keep going, even after the passive introductions to wolf, hawk, owl, eagle, crow, swan, lion, and puma shifters, which is saying a lot because at the rate you're going why stop there? Go ahead and throw some hyena, anaconda, boar, and gecko shifters in there while you're at it. I didn't like the way the author tried to tie them all in to the paranormal species either, and I lost interest when the Fae lands were pretty suddenly introduced. Nothing much was explained about HOW they were able to jump through there, or why Aaron didn't have any powers, or why the hell Sophia turned in to a gigantic swan, or.. I'll stop there and spare you. The weird rules imposed on the universe were always after thoughts. Like all of a sudden it's mentioned shifters crave touch. Where the heck did that come from? Why was it only given maybe a few lines and glossed over almost entirely? Who knows. But I gave it my best.
This is the story of the swan Princess, Sophia Sassafras Victoria Angelique Siyanko, and Aaron Drake, King of Dragons. This isn't a child's story. It full of disturbing events and can give you nightmares, if you are affected by extreme violence.
There are a tremendous number of races: the Fae, vampires, werewolves, dragons, lions, eagles, owls, bats, rabbits, etc., etc., etc. All of these are sentient races. Yes, there are a few unicorns, horses, and other things, that are sentient, but most people don't know it, and never will.
This story from beginning to end, had way too much violence, politics, and cruelty for me to say I enjoyed reading it. Without going into any more detail, you better be prepared for very hardcore, twisted, sex. That is what I would call it. . . I'll give only ONE example. Be very grateful I did so. . At the beginning of the story, the reader finds out that Princess Sophia needs to be whipped/flayed, until almost all of her skin comes off, 4 times a year, at both equinoxes and both solstices. If she isn't, like other swan people, she will not be able to change into a swan. . . Why do swan people need this and dragons, etc. don't ? . She is a virgin, swan person. Other than that it's never really explained. It doesn't make any sense or make any really important contribution to the plot. Other than her fiancé is a horrendous sadist and her father allows it. . . What happens if a virgin swan person fails to get flayed ? . If no one is available to whip her, she must “use a knife to cut a seam from one foot, up the outside of the body, from armpit to fingers on the bottom of the arm, and then “fingers to shoulder on the top of the arm, over the head and scalp, skip the right arm and go down the body to the right foot, and then as the left foot comes out and forms, use the claws to rip a seam in the skin from the right arm so it can pull free.” . . What happens if they fail to get out of their skin and make the change to swan ? . “Not allowing a swan to turn four times a year is apparently a horrible ordeal, and is used as punishment for swans, sometimes. I’m told the pain lasts six months — so if you don’t turn on one solstice, you’ll hurt until the next. Same with the equinoxes.” Aaron nodded. “I’m aware. I’ve seen grown men in the throes of the change for the entire six months, begging for someone to kill them to put them out of their misery.” . . Now you know why this book is so disturbing. And... there is a whole lot more of things like this. This part about the swan Princess Sophia being cut is at the very beginning of the book !!!
*** Be Warned *** This is not for those who want an adventure story where people don't get hurt much and heal really fast, kind Fairy Godmothers exist and grant nice wishes, safety and security abound, and no one lacks for anything. It isn't even a good romance, unless you enjoy pain and suffering.
After I had finished reading it all the way through, hoping there would be a good reason for all of this dark stuff to happen. There wasn't.
More disturbing to me was, the Princess becomes darker and darker as time goes on, but she is praised for it. All in all a horrifying book I wish I hadn't read.
What a way to start of a fun new series. Yes the main characters are shifters, but there's a whole platter full of fun supernaturals in here. Wolves, hawks, eagles, crows, fae, vampires, I mean, this is a cool world to be in. And yes it's a romance, almost erotica, but not quite, but pretty close. LOL Honestly, I loved the sex talk because it was trying to teach someone who was so sheltered from someone with EONS of experience. And I giggled a lot. LOL Plus I liked the characters. I hadn't read anything by this author before, but I promise I will be getting each book from this series for sure!
We start with Aaron, one of the literal last dragon shifters. He's a king. But no one really knows it. He's a little private, crazy good with security, and he's a mentor and teacher to the swan Princess. Her daddy is a freaking lunatic by the way. You would think Swans being a little lower on the food chain in the shifter world would be mild and cool. NO these people are out of their ever loving minds, and holy crap, their crazy makes the Fae look like tinkerbell! Yeah. Anyways, so Aaron is AWESOME. He falls for the princess but there's no way it could be, so he tells her, if she ever needs help, he'd be there. But he settles with a broken heart to go on with like. He's so kind, and gentle, and smokin HAWT literally. He's every woman's wet dream and perfect guy all rolled into THAT! And just when we think it's over, the Princess escapes her prison and runs straight to his arms! He will do anything to protect her, even from herself, and at the risk of his own life, with him being the literal brink of extinction if he dies.
Sophia is our Swan Princess. I like her alot. She has been locked away like repunzle, by her father, with torturous people surrounding her, and she has no IDEA what goes on in the world. She isn't allowed. But she won't be used anymore. She plans and executes an escape and runs straight to Aaron. She's always loved him, and this time, she plans to ask him to help, but for good. Poor kid, she isn't really a kid, but it seems like it because she's never even ridden in a car, or used a computer, or done almost anything. She was so happy to wear jeans. She's willing to learn anything and everything she can, even cause a war, because too many bad guys keep winning and the good guys and innocent are the pawns. She wants change, and Aaron is gunna help her get to it.
I loved this story. It's so innocent sometimes, and then it's all out crazy others. The characters will keep you glued to the book, but the world that is created was wonderful as well. I liked the plot as well. It isn't some big mystery, but the getting from point A to point B kept me in suspense. You really don't know what could happen, or who could chose which side. And who is really a good guy or a bad guy! I loved the whole thing, so I can't wait to see what's going to come next! 5 PAWS from me!
I have been a fan of Candace Blevins for a while, but this book is completely different from everything else I have read from her. Aaron Drake is a 9,000 year old dragon shifter that is king of a nearly extinct raise. Sophia is a swan princess. Following the death of her mother, Sophia is locked away by her father to protect her from the outside world as well as to ensure that she never develops the leadership skills necessary to threaten his reign.
Aaron is Sophia’s teacher from very early on, and from a very early age he tries to secretly impart the skills and wisdom that she will someday need to lead her people. As Sophia ages her time with Aaron becomes increasingly scarce. Before she can be married off to a fiancée she despises, Sophia risks her like to escape the prison her father has created. Aaron is her one hope of refuge in a world she knows nothing about. The disappearance of the swan princess sets of wars in both the modern world as well as in the mystical Summerlands.
Aaron immediately assembles a team of shifters and vampires to both protect and educate his swan princess. The supporting characters for this story are tremendous in numbers, yet the author manages to make each character unique and each characters adds their own little piece to the complex story.
The relationship between the 9,000 year old dragon shifter and the 25 year old swan princess is much different than the usual Candace Blevins relationship. This relationship is very vanilla and very equal. I’ll be honest, I was really, really hoping that the dragon king would eventually go all Dom on the swan princess. I understand that would not have fit the sense of equality he was trying to impart in her, but still… I was hoping. The author didn’t leave us completely high and dry with only vanilla sex, Mabel, the Winter Queen, is very much the hard core Domme that enjoys hurting and humiliating the willing and even more so the not so willing.
This story is very complex, and really hard to summarize. The author did a tremendous job weaving the story through both modern day Chatanooga and the mystical Summerlands. There are so many characters yet somehow she managed to make each one unique and very relevant to the story. She even managed to fit in characters from The Safeword Series, and made them fit perfectly with this story. Although I have enjoyed everything I have read from Candace Blevins’ I think this story takes her to a whole new level as an author. The level of detail she puts into each character and each setting is amazing. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I received this book through the BDSM group on Goodreads.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Just when I think I have read the best book ever written by Candace Blevins, she writes a new one and completely blows my mind with her creativity, her attention to details, her powerful characters, and her ability to entertain me. Her newest book, The Dragon King, is probably one of the best books that I have had the pleasure of reading so far this year. In fact, it’s so amazing, I don’t think I could even find anything constructive to tell her other than “Please write more!”
From the very first pages, I was pulled into this imaginary, yet realistic world that Ms. Blevins created. Within this world there are were-swans, dragons, werewolves, vampires, fairies and more. Yet, the emotions that these characters express and feel are so real and so heartfelt, that I completely buy them as human and therefore believable. In fact, Ms. Blevins gave them human characteristics that kept them relatable and likeable.
The political intrigue that is woven throughout this romance is so intricate and detailed that I found myself fascinated at the machinations of these characters. I loved how the story was told from both Aaron and Sophia’s point of view so that we were treated to their inner thoughts. This allowed me to better understand their actions and feelings. Unlike other books that I have read, I was not confused by this back and forth at all and found it to be very enjoyable.
Ms. Blevins truly has a gift of writing with so much attention to details that I can easily picture every place and every person. It’s as if she has traveled to these imaginary places and written down the description of each place so that she can share it with the reader. It’s this ability that just earns Ms. Blevins my respect and admiration.
If you are not a fan of paranormal or science fiction, don’t let that keep you away because this book is ultimately about a young woman coming into her own. The fact that she is a shifter and is surrounded by shifters is a minor detail. Watching Sophia learn and grow as a princess and finally standing up to her father was a joyous journey that I was happy to be able to watch happen.
So I will state that The Dragon King is my most favorite Candace Blevins novel. However, since she has more books planned for this series as well as other series that are blended into this one, then don’t be surprised if I change my mind about which one is my true favorite. It’s not that I’m fickle, it’s just that Ms. Blevins books keep getting better and better which is a gift for us readers.
This book is...damn I don't even have words. OK, let me get myself together.
I really like this book. It was a whole new twist of shifters and the like - and you KNOW I love paranormal romance :)
Sophia was an interesting character. At first you think she is going to be this one-dimensional pure-as-the-drive-snow heroine that will eventually bore you and nothing she does can take you by surprise. Yeah, you'll think that, and you'll be WRONG. Ms. Blevins lulls you into a false sense of security with Sophia. Do NOT underestimate the Swan Princess - you have been warned. This chick (see what I did there lol) can be, well, I don't want to give it away so let's go with strong-willed. While the story line and conflicts are not overly surprising, I was certainly taken aback at some of Sophia’s reactions to antagonists.
Aaron is a whole 'nother breed of shifter. He is possessive and protective (my two favorite traits in a hero)of his Sophia. A great aspect of Aaron’s character is his honesty. He is as upfront with Sophia as he can be while she is under the care of her father. He is also honest with her from the beginning once she has escaped and made her way to Aaron for safety. Aaron's struggle to find balance regarding the way he interacts with Sophia is heart-warming. He doesn't want to mold her into his puppet; he wasn't to help her really come into her own as a leader. But at the same time he wants her to give herself fully to him in private. Mr. Aaron Drake, teacher-extraordinaire, is not only well versed in political play, but also erotic. Examples of teaching aides: butterfly vibrator (check), flogger (check), spankings (check).
The fact that Aaron watched Sophia grow up, well, that was kinda weird for me, but I could let it go. The explanation of the growth of and development of their feelings allowed me to move on from my initial hesitation.
The writing was very descriptive, gruesome in some parts even. The world created by Ms. Blevins is well thought out and painted for the reader’s appreciation. Every scene is written so the reader is easily able to put themselves either in the character’s place or as a fly on the wall. How you want to place yourself in a scene will really depend on the reader.
The only thing I found difficult to muddle through was the flip-flopping between a very clinical and eloquent style of writing to hot-as-sin cuss-filled craziness. Betcha wanna read it now, huh?
This is the first time I have ever written a review in a word document before posting it on Amazon to make sure I wrote exactly how I felt about a book. The Dragon King is the second book I have read from Candace Belvins and it is totally different from the first book I read of hers. That in itself surprised and pleased me. It is rare to find an author who can write so differently, yet very good. I don’t like to read reviews that give the story away s I won’t do that in my review. I will say that this book is so well told that all I could do is sit and read and while I was reading I could see it in my mind’s eye on SYFY as a series. Aaron is a one of kind paranormal who you can’t help but fall in love with at the same time as you both fear him. i mean I am thinking man I would love to bow at his feet and hand him a flogger. Sophia is the swan princess “locked in the tower” by her father the king but she is not waiting for what he has planned for her. Nope she makes her own destiny. I have not read books in this series prior to this one, and in fact if I had not read other reviews I would have not even known there were other books before this one. Candace Blevins tells this story so well you don’t feel that you have missed anything by not reading other books before this one (although you bet ya I will be getting them now). This book is full of hot and steamy scenes and other times loving romance. You will also find times you want to reach into the pages of your reader (kindle) and just grab Raul and the Eagle King and others by their throats and swing them around until they are road kill, but that’s okay we’ll let Mabel or Aaron take care of them. I love seeing two very strong characters Male and Female who love each other and show such strength and courage. One of the things that I liked about this book is how Aaron helped Sophia find her “voice” and allowed her to rule and switch roles. This book is not simply a shifter or paranormal book or even a romance book. This book touches on so many things that are in the public’s eye right now but in a different fashion. This is one book I know I will be re-reading time again. Like a good naughty fairy tale. I look forward to reading more from Candace Blevins and of course I need to go back and get caught up on the books before The Dragon King. I highly recommend this book as well as all her books.
What can one say about such a talented writer?? Candance you so rock!! She will always be one of my favorites. To be honest this book started slow for me, gained speed and met me at the finish line. What I thought would be a so-so read, turned out to to be a page turner. A first book in the series that so far proves to be interesting and on hit with some of the others in the same genre. Lions, fairies, dragons wolves oh my.. What young sheltered girl to to? Well escape and define her own life. To get that control she enlists the one man that could teach her, be the woman SHE wants to be. Aaron the fact that he taught Sophia from a very young age, those lessons will come full force as he stands beside her as she makes her own choices. In some instances his taught strategies will come back to haunt him. Sophia has decided to take the bull by the horns, not sure of all the ramifications but she is determined to live her life not her fathers. Along the way to her self discovery she will learn, be guided and meet challenges that are just part of not being the sheltered princess. Even though it took me a minute I so loved this book, It does have a lot of detail but as you read it all come together. I adored most of the characters not just the main ones, OMG i loved the Queens of Fairie, and how in reflection Aaron explained how one sister is as fierce and dangerous as the other one. The shifting scenes...wow.. Shudders well written especially when Sophia by herself the first time. There was a moment I thought Sophia was wrong in her judgment about Aaron and I wanted to strangle her. (smiles) The descriptions in fairy were awesome, you could close your eyes and see them. The BDSM scenes whew the Winter Queen oh my dayum... But Aaron always showed gentleness and patience with Sophia. Magic, passion, love deeply, growing into one’s self. Fighting and determination all wrapped up in the Dragon King.. Totally awesome and I’m glad I had the honor to read it, thank you Candace. Of course I recommend it... Enjoy.
I loved this! Aaron Drake is several thousand years old and a dragon. He’s also a scorching hot man and can put his slippers under my bed anytime. But I digress.
Candace Blevins has shown she can write paranormal romance and make it sexy as hell, as well as convincing me with her world building that I am sharing my life with more creatures than I ever knew existed. She manages a seamless blend of ‘that’ world with ‘this’, with a good knowledge of Fae mythology, the imagination to mix things up and using characters from her other series to ground the human side of the story. I haven’t read a lot of paranormal fiction, but if I can lose myself in the book easily and accept the non-humans without being taken out of the story, the author is doing a great job.
Sophia, the Swan Princess, is a strong-minded woman who won’t accept her father’s narrow choices for her life. Aaron, the Dragon King, is the one who can help her stay free once she has fled her former life. The two of them have loved each other for years, and this is the chance for it to become the romantic love they both want.
Aaron is a favourite character of mine who has appeared in a couple of previous books from Ms. Blevins. This one is a chance for us to really get to know him, what has made him the person he is, and his history - and there’s plenty of that, some of it in the Fae world quite unexpected. Sophia is an engaging, feisty, intelligent woman who is an interesting mix of maturity, when it comes to politics and strategy, and naïvity, with regard to personal relationships, since she really hasn’t been allowed to have any. Her sexual blossoming under Aaron’s tutelage is a great part of the story, and is sometimes quite funny.
The story comes to a satisfactory conclusion, although I hope to see a bit more of these two in further books. I especially enjoy the crossover of characters from one series to another.
Recommended for paranormal and/or romance readers, as I think there is something here for everyone who enjoys an HEA.
OK, so just let me clear this up ... I like paranormal but up to a point. Vampires and werewolves were fine cause hey who didn't watch Buffy and all that ... all the rest ... eeeeeeee let' me think about it ... and now I can say I have seen it all !!!! and swans can kick ass !!!!
OMG !!!! from reading previously other paranormal writers I had all the paranormal basics covered but this book is the perfect example of DOING YOUR HOMEWORK and having your basics clear !!!!
fist thought going into this was ... dragons are ok, but SWANS ????? they are more cuddly than badass but I state that I was proven wrong !!! One sassy swan can cause a havoc with just a look (don't let it get that far so she uses her voice !!! don't let her speak hahaha)
I have to say I like all the character layer that all of them have and how it all fits, even if certain things seem obvious they are still good positioned so it fits. The story seems soft at first (from the sex point of view - of course) but till the end you get a peak at the mean streak (or the sadistic tingle) that Candace is known for so all is good in the world (both of them). its soft enough and at the end (when you are nice and ready for it)hard and brutal but just enough so that it's acceptable even to those who are know used to her usual writing style !!
I have to say I was surprised by this genre choice for Candace but she has proven herself and its a hit !!! even more so !!!
one of the best quotes of the book that sums it up
"...Without warning he stepped to the side, bent me over the padded arm of a chair, and drove his fingers into me. “Mine. My wife. My Queen. My love. I’ve waited an eternity to find the right woman for me.” I couldn’t speak, couldn’t respond, and he pulled his fingers out, pushed them back in, and muttered, “An iron will, but such a soft, luscious body...”
*I was given free copy of the book for an honest review*
This was an interesting book for me. I've read the author's Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club series, so knew that Aaron and Sophie were a couple. I liked the world that they shared so wanted to check out this book. I have to say that this one wasn't what I expected going in. Sure there was a lot of sex, expected that, but I didn't expect the Fae aspects. What threw me off there was some of the bloodier aspects of what happened in Faerie. Sure people did bad things and needed to be punished, but man...what happened to the Eagle King was over the top for me.
I also sort of expected to have an issue with Aaron and Sophie as a couple with how they were introduced. I think reading and seeing them in the RTMC series helped this. My issue was Aaron knowing and teaching Sophie as a toddler to a teen. The one thing that helped is we were never shown him perving on her, only that he loved her joy as a child and how once she was a teen their contact was very limited with chaperones around as befitting a Princess.
I did like that Sophie knew she could go to Aaron for help and that Aaron helped her. Sure he might have done so as a way to help himself, but he also really wanted to help the child he knew and taught. I liked that while they hid away Aaron taught Sophie what she really needed to know to be the Swan Queen and how he gave her a choice to be his mate or not, that he explained things to her.
It was fun to see Sophie grow with confidence, to become the Queen in actions and words and sadly she had to make some hard decisions, but they were for the good of her and her people.
I was given an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review, and this review is long overdue, but here goes: I LOVED this book! It is the second book Candace has written about the otherworldly, but in no way a sequel to “Only Human,” which I also recommend. It is long, complex, and pretty addictive, as in very hard to put down! One of Candace’s hallmarks as a writer is her ability to craft each character so that you feel that you really know them, their individual emotions, points of view etc. Being able to empathize makes a big difference to me as a reader! As far as the story goes, there is a very strong romantic component, a strong adventure component, and some sex, but not as much as in her older books. That’s really all I can say without getting into a morass of spoilers; I really resent reviewers who don’t notice that this is what they are doing! I think the on-line book description is very thorough, and there really isn’t any reason to repeat it! My only objection, is that Candace is clearly focusing on paranormal books right now, and I REALLY want more from the Safeword series, particularly Sir James’ story! An extension to a second book (as she did with the Matte series) of some of the other ones would be Just Fine with me too!!
I loved this book it's full of adventure and love Sophia is the swan princess she is sheltered most if her life but their is a catch not all is good when being sheltered is more like being parishioners in one's home Aaron was once Sophie's teacher as she got older he was forbidden to interact with her he always loved her it started out as the love as a teacher then as she grew into a women it became more Sophia is on the run from her father being forced to marry a man she remember Aaron make her promise that if she ever needed help to find him and she did will Aaron be able to keep Sophia safe or will her father get her back by any means necessary? Will they have a happy ending I strongly recommend that you read this book it is worth every penny 5 gold stars
After escaping her father's compound, Swan Princess Sophia Siyanko seeks help from the were-dragon Aaron Drake who will have to fight every swan and eagle, most of the wolves and all of Faerie in this exciting paranormal romance. The author has created a fascinating world full of intriguing characters and unique elements that make for a refreshing change and add a little something extra to the story. There was no way I could put this story down once I started reading it and I have to say I love the interesting Swan culture that the author has created and mixing with it the dragons is genius, needless to say I can't wait to read the next one.
