Part travelogue, part confessions of a cosmetic/shoe addict, part memoir, part ramble.

I have always loved Marian Keyes especially when I was in my 20s. Her books have always been fun, delightfully Irish and easy reading.

This is a collection of short stories the author has either published in magazines already or just written on the fly. You get to know her very well, with all her own insecurities, finding humor in the ups and downs of daily life and it shows just how unglamorous being a famous author can really be.

I would never have bought this myself but was more than happy to borrow the audio and ended up really enjoying the audio narration. This is the same narrator that was used in The Break and I am a big fan.

Recommended for Marian Keyes fans.

Three and a half stars for me.

I adore Marian Keyes. She’s such a delightful writer, who finds humour in the everyday nitty gritty that drives us to distraction. Who else hasn’t felt angst at having to be the first to leave a dinner party, “break up” with their hairdresser or become all gooey and silly when they meet a famous person they admire.

These vignettes are a breath of fresh air, and fun fun fun. Marian is the friend you are happy to meet after work on a Friday night. 🍸

I want to add “banjaxed”into everyday conversation. Isn’t it the most amazing word!

“When a risk fails - as it occasionally must, for then it would not be a risk – we must not be hard on ourselves. We must simply get a pizza out of the freezer and live to fight another day.”

I listened to the audible, and the narrator was excellent. If you're not a Marian Keyes fan, and have not read most of her books, this is probably not for you. I really enjoyed seeing how much of her daily experiences ends up in her novels. I loved that she is not all sunshine, but has a darker side, and allowed us a glimpse into how she deals with this. Although very light, and not following any chronological order, this had sooo many laugh out loud moments and I absolutely adored Aoife McMahon's accent. Can't wait to listen to catch up on the few books I've missed by this author.

Insomnia. Hairdressers. Regrets. Obsessions. I could relate to a lot of issues in this brutally honest collection of Marian Keyes' works of non-fiction. This book would cheer anyone up on a dreary day and left me hoping for seconds. 5 stars

A wonderful anthology of articles by Marian Keyes- perfect for fans! It's great to dip into and indulge in a bit of her wit on wide ranging subjects. She introduces everyone at the start so that you know how everyone fits in to her life. Some of them are unpublished- but most of them are new to me as I haven't previously seen them.
One of those books that you could pick up when you only have a few spare minutes- but still be guaranteed an entertaining read.
With many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this one.

I was really excited to be reading this - especially as I got a free review ebook from Netgalley - thanks Netgalley.
Unfortunately, I have walked away from this book a little downhearted which has shocked and dismayed me. I really like Marian's fiction books and the little articles that she has written elsewhere have made me chuckle - and I think she's a naturally kind, humourous lady with a wonderful turn of phrase - but I think maybe I got 'over-keyed' with this book. I just came away a little annoyed as all of the stories/articles together just seemed like it was a showing off exercise on Marian's part.
I know that she is probably not like this but I think her editors have done her a disservice in the way that it is set out and displayed.
All in all, this book left me cross with a frown on my part.

Wow! I've always loved Marians books, but this was the BEST! I adored it! It was a compilation of her writings, some of which have been previously published somewhere, and some were previously unpublished. She writes about her own life, her travels, her family, her interests. The book was diveded in different sections and it's easy to read in which order you prefere. You can jump around if you like. I just love her style to write, it's so witty, and funny and she's very sincere about her mental health issues and her health. She's very modest. Now I feel like I know her, there are so many things we have in common, she feels like my friend. And now I've started to follow her on Twitters. This is one book I'd love to have myself, there are stories that I would like to read over and over again. And it's so great to read that she's feeling a bit better nowadays <3

I couldn't finish this book. Couldn't make it past the first section.

I'm so disappointed. I love Marian Keyes' work. I've always found her writing to be witty and clever, but she's tackled some pretty serious subjects too. This may sound mean, but I liked her better when I only knew her through her fiction.

Probably some readers would feel the same about me, if they found out I was a tree-hugging, animal-loving environmentalist who supports the rights of immigrants and indigenous peoples (although that shouldn't be too surprising if they've read my books). I used to love Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series, and when a woman I knew said she couldn't stand it because it glamourized shopping addiction, I thought she needed to lighten up. But I get it now, after attempting to read this gem. Boy, do I get it.

First of all, this is a series of previously published articles and blog posts, and if I'd known that, I probably would have given the book a pass. Rarely are these "collections" up to the standard of an author's novels. And certainly I've overspent on unnecessary items before, but reading that Keyes buys bottle after bottle of Chanel nail polish she never intends on using, so she can look at it as some kind of personal museum...and that she obsesses over her eyelashes, her fake tan, her hairy legs, and her nails...was this supposed to be funny? I guess so, but the overall effect was painting a picture of a self-obsessed hoarder who spends piles of money on stuff she doesn't need and has no intention of using--without a clue that nail polish actually goes bad and changes color over time?

Maybe a decade or so ago, I would have found stories about a woman accumulating stuff just to accumulate stuff amusing, but that time has long past. Excessive consumerism isn't a punchline for me these days. I wasn't liking this version of Keyes, so I stopped reading and will stick to her fiction.

Erg grappig.

Marian Keyes' feet are the same size as mine. And that is just one of the reasons I love her. She is funny. And she speaks the truth. When she writes about trying to break up with her hairdresser it is a story that almost all women can relate to. I even enjoyed her pieces on cosmetics, and I don't even wear make up. If you can get through this without literally LOLing at least once, I don't think I can be friends with you.

Marian is on my dream dinner guest list. And if you're not following her on The Twitters what are you doing?!

I don't usually read non - fiction, but for Marian Keyes I am more than willing to make an exception. I've already done, as I had read both of her "Under the Duvet" volumes of journalism and I enjoyed them immensely, and it was not different with "Making It Up As I Go Along" - it is a large book, with almost 500 pages, and I swallowed it within two days. But before I tell you why I loved this book so much, please let's stop and marvel at this gorgeous cover - I think one of the most beautiful, optimistic covers ever, this yellow makes me want to go on right now.

What I always adored Marian for is the fact that she's Honest. Honest with capital H. She doesn't hide things, she doesn't try to show herself in the best light, no, she just doesn't beat around the bush, she writes as it is, and sometimes she's so honest that it hurts. But somehow her being so honest, seeing that her life is just like any other lives, makes me feel this little better. What is also brilliant, is that I have exactly the same views at most of the things she writes about, the difference is only that she can so perfectly express those feelings with words, but well, now at least I know what it is that I feel.

"Making It Up As I Go Along" is a kind of book that you can read backwards or start in the middle, no matter, and a kind of book that you can put down for a moment or two (although you won't want to do this when you start reading it!) and pick up again, without having to worry that you may not get into it again. No. It covers many topics, this book, many, and the author is sharing with us her private life just as it is. I think I can't say that I had a favourite chapter, as everything, truly everything, was wonderful, hilarious, written in this bitter - sweet way that I so adore. But OK, I also have thousands of nail - varnishes, am addicted to body lotions and can't wait to finally, eventually finish my face cream to start this other, new, shiny glass...! Really, so many things I could relate to!

Marian's observations are so down - to - earth yet so witty, and this fusion makes for a brilliant read. She can change the most normal, trivial situation into something special, something hilarious with her observations and she is the best one to find absurdities in life and to question them in this specific, Marian's style. And yes, it is incredibly funny, but the author also sneaks there some more serious moments, more serious issues that make you stop for a moment and appreciate what you have.

So yes, the book covers a lot of topics - as Marian tells us not only about her love to nail - varnish but about her family, holidays (wow. Just wow), finding hobbies and developing love to going for walks, and she writes this all in this easy, often ironic, with a really great dose of self - irony style, and ultimately we get a book that is relaxing, is funny and brilliant to read and which you can pick up at any moment and read just only one article and feel like you're living again. A fantastic non - fiction, just what I needed at the moment and what I was expecting from Marian Keyes. Highly recommended!

I haven’t read any Marian Keyes books for a while and I’d forgotten what a funny, clever, observant writer she is.

The book is a collection of personal stories, some that have been published in various magazines or newspapers and quite a lot that haven’t been published before. A memoir of sorts and a real mix of hilarious anecdotes, overseas travel, various experiences and other stories that are quite poignant and insightful and give us glimpses into the author’s life.
The book made me laugh out loud and giggle quite a lot at times which all helped to ease the strain of the house sale/move I’m going through at the moment.

Hard to find a favourite funny bit to quote, there are so many.

Marian Keyes is painfully honest and self-effacing throughout with each different tale. There are parts of the book that are reflective and insightful and as if the author has, dare I use the phrase, ‘been on a journey’.

Quote ‘I find it difficult to ever be truly at peace, there’s always something that feels like a shark relentlessly on the prowl..’

We hear of her struggle with alcohol in her early years and also that she takes ‘anti-mad’ tablets every day for depression and has suffered a nervous breakdown. There is an underlying sadness at times that gave me a bit of a lump in my throat and some of the stories involve a search for some sort of peace of mind by trying out various alternative therapies and ‘interests’, some with extremely funny, near catastrophic effects. I quite like a bit of ‘beach-house banjo’ too (read the book to find out :-)
I love the way Marian Keyes sometimes alters the spelling of words, ‘fabaliss’ and ‘sangwidge’ to name a few that she Irishizes (pedants, I know there is no such word). I grew up on Merseyside, had Irish grandparents, friends from Irish families and we all Irishized and Scouseified a lot of words ourselves, much to the disgust of the Irish nuns in our Convent school who wanted us all to speak proper English.
The book is quite a lengthy one, really jam-packed with stories and good value but I was sad when it ended and could have just carried on reading more and more…

Happily I’ve since discovered a few books from the author that I haven’t yet read.

This is definitely a me thing, not necessarily a book thing, but I really didn't care for this one. This is a collection of some published and some unpublished articles by Marian Keyes about random things in life. She talks about being a woman, family, food, and lots more. I love her writing style and most of her books, but I just don't care about random musings from anyone. I was listening on audio which made it a little more entertaining I think, but I just didn't care enough to finish it. She also speaks from a VERY privileged place and did not acknowledge that at all.

Marian Keyes essays are my favorite bathroom reading. I hope that there's another one soon. I do wish that they weren't necessarily grouped by subject, as it can be a little wearying ("Oh, and then I went on this other fabulous trip!"/"I also am totally bonkers for this consumer product."/"Shall I follow-up that last funny family tale with this one?") but it's a minor complaint and I enjoyed them thoroughly, so probably I should stop my grousing.

'Fabulous shoes, my badly made stews, an Antarctic cruise and ten pounds to lose.
Having to schmooze when I'd far rather snooze.
Skin care and bad hair and what should I wear?
All kinds of views, which I hope will amuse . . .'
Welcome to the magnificent Making It Up as I Go Along - aka the World According to Marian Keyes™ - A bold, brilliant book bursting with Marian's hilarious and heartfelt observations on modern life, love and much, much else besides.
Such as? you are determined to ask.
Well, how about her guide to breaking up with your hairdresser? Or the warning she has for us all after a particularly traumatic fling with fake tan. There's the pure and bounteous joy of the nail varnish museum. Not to mention the very best lies to tell if you find yourself on an Arctic cruise. She has words of advice for those fast approaching fifty. And she's here to tell you the secret secret truth about writers - well, this one anyway.
You'll be wincing in recognition and scratching your head in incredulity, but like Marian herself you won't be able to stop laughing at the sheer delightful absurdity that is modern life - because each and every one of us is clearly making it up as we go along.

4/5

An easy fun read. Lot's of short little tales of real life, and how you feel about certain things. Many of which you will relate to.
I loved the one about breaking up with your hairdresser, the guilt you feel when you want to change lol.
And the obsessions with nail polish, priceless. I could relate to so much in this book.
But it's one of those books, you can pick up an put down, read a bit or read a lot at a time.
I found many laugh out loud moments in this book, and was at one point asked what I was reading as I looked odd sat at the table in work with a silly grin on my face.
REal life, real stuff ready to read.
