This is truly a must read! It's not like other love stories where the books ends with ". . . and they lived happily ever after" or ends with the couple getting together. This feels like something real - like something that could happen or does happen. The characters feel real, all thanks to this amazing writer. You laugh with them, cry with them, root for them. This story is so well put together that I could not put it down. I needed to know what happens after every twist and turn in the novel.

This is not the type of fiction I usually read. I generally stick to sci-fi, historical and some fantasy, however I've been pushing myself to broaden my tastes. Message on the Wind is a love story true and true and *really* not in my wheel house, but I was pleasantly surprised in how enjoyable of a read it turned out to be.

I was sold almost instantly on Ellie, the protagonist, and the rest of the cast. The author has a gift for bringing her subjects to life. If I had any criticism, it would be that more time than necessary was spent developing the characters in the beginning. Like I said I was already sold early and ready for the action.

That said, once the twists and turns started, the pages were flying. Lieberman had me squirming in my patio chair on several occasions, fearful for Ellie or laughing at the dialogue. At one point I tried to take a break to get some housework done, only to sit back down, unable to leave, wondering what would come next.

I also particulary loved the parts dealing with the Native American tribe. Liebermen's insights into their customs and traditions were compelling. I don't think just any author could have written about them with such understanding. The intimate knowledge displayed has to come from more than just research. My suspicion is the author either has native ancestry or must have some relationship with one or more tribal members.

All in all, I loved this book and am happy "expanding my horizons" is paying off.

More than just a romance

Generally I'm not a strict romance reader, but this one pleasantly surprised me. The author wrote a novel of love in adversity during a period of American history when there was much prejudice against mixed marriages. Though the primary plot was the romantic relationship of Ellen and Alex it was also about bridging two cultures and familial relationships. There are bad guys that are easily hated and the hero and heroine are easily loved. The character development very good and the plot is more than just a love story developing subplots that are interesting. I enjoyed her depiction of The People, which in their own languages is how the Native American people's refer to themselves. The spiritual aspect was well done. There were no graphic sex scenes though there were sexual encounters. The author treated them in such a way as to afford the characters a bit of privacy even though a reader knew what was happening. If it were a movie I'd rate it PG-13 at the least though I think I'd not want to let a youth under 16 read it. I did find some editing errors. I rate this a 4 star book.

Barb Lieberman’s newest novel, Message on the Wind, is definitely a must read! Once you board the train will Ellie Price and step foot in Broken Ridge Wyoming, you won’t want to leave! The beautiful descriptions make you feel as though you are actually there! From the moment you read the first page, you will be hooked! And you’ll quickly fall in love with Ellie and Alex and their story as they triumph against the racism of the time, haunting pasts, and all the great odds thrown at them! While it is a story of great love between the two main characters, it is ultimately a story of life and living and the effects people can have in each other's life. You root for the characters, laugh and cry with them. Even the minor characters will steal your heart from Alex’s younger brother, Gabriel, to Ellie’s friend’s sister, Beth. This is a book you won’t want to miss!
