The young world of Onneron has known peace for years. But now unease has spread across the land as disagreements between factions threaten each other’s way of life. The Brothers of the Onneron College dedicate themselves to higher learning and to mastering Paths of magic. They wish to remain independent, but the Onneron Church feels threatened by their ability to heal and vies to take control of their order. Treace, bullied and belittled, is unaware of the plan his deceased father has for him. A mentor sets him upon a path to join the prestigious College. Even if he is accepted, the tides of change are coming. To Treace it’s not about where we end up, it’s the Paths we take to get there that matters. Path of The Calm is the first book in the epic series Saga of The Wolf that follows Treace as he grows into a young man. It explores the bonds of friendship, deception, life lessons, love, swordplay, and magic.
To begin with, it's a book. The author wrote a book (so that's worth at least a star). The concept of "The Calm" is an interesting one, so I'll give it a second star.
That's really about all I'd be willing to rate this book. There are a ton of grammatical errors (get an editor!) and the hero's life is just...too easy and unbelievable. No one in the story acts the way real people act. The emotions are too simplistic. The adults portrayed too childish.
I expected a better book from all the positive reviews. There is some good stuff, so probably I'll also look at the second book, but there is also a lot to improve. For example the love interest of the MC is too illogical. He met her for like 30 minutes in total and after years without seeing her he still is in love? It's like the author finished writing the book and realized he forgot to put some love in the story so he just randomly put a chick in the middle and made her the heroine. Also the whore episode...if you are a virgin teenager, completely drunk and with a naked beautiful woman asking to have sex....you don't run away... Some people compared the MC to Kvothe from the Kingkiller chronicles, but while I really appreciated Kvothe talent and genius and it felt completely plausible to me, in this case Treace talent feels forced and definetely too much. On the other hand I appreciate the political situation at the end of the book so I will give it a try for the second book.
One of the worst books I had the misfortune to read. Terrible cliched fantasy elements such as smart underdog MC who happens to be both small and bullied. Also is a orphan who captures the attention of the prettiest girl in the village. The author beats us over the head with the fact she's the love interest. Of course she's also betrothed to his bully. Other sicking stuff includes the MC's use of fucking Twin swords like he's some sort of character in an RPG. Did I mention he's in fact a master smith by the age of 12 as well? He doesn't come off as a genius, just a pretentious prick.
I've rarely seen such wooden and stilted dialogue in all my time reading. The prose is pretty lackluster as well, almost no description. There's really not much to say here, it's just terrible writing
If you're looking for generic fantasy there's better fanfics out there for you to read
Treace is at first a naive child that's to intelligent and naive for his own good. He struggles from childhood into his preteens but later skyrockets from a young man......into a young legend. He soon finds his confidence and the maturity to take on one challenging ordeal after another. Swords and sorcery aplenty and you can't help but feel real emotions for the characters in this world. It would've received 5 stars but I'm not a big fan or switches thing character perspectives, though it's not done frequently enough to ruin the book. Strong outing and I will be reading book II.
Honestly i was jumping between 2 and 4 stars on this one. It basically has the main thing i look for which, trite as it is, the 'young kids trains to become a badass' storyline. The book says it's for young adult, but so much of it reads like its meant for middle grade honestly. So much telegraphing of intent by the author. So much internal debate over things that really, really aren't important. All that bothered me, and a nice little bonus is that there are basically no women in the book at all. There's his mom, and a love interest (that he's met twice?), and then just some random barmaid. I don't remember any of their names, and none of them get any real time at all.
The closest parallel I can think of is Rothfuss' books. The main character is an exceptional young man that learns his skills through effort. It still happens fairly quickly for his level of mastery, but at least it wasn't like some books where it comes without work.
I like how many story lines there are, not too many, and where they ended or are yet to go. I need book 2 soon!
This is a well developed story with complex characters and multiple plots. The author has done a splendid job creating a world with feeling and excitement. I good choice if you are looking for a great story and extremely well written developed characters
The story was fine, nothing original but was entertaining enough with various characters. The writing itself was simplistic -- more akin to a children's book at times. But a story is a story and I read it until the end. I'm not quite so fascinated that I'll pick up the next one.
I want to be clear that I did not hate this book just that it needs work...
Ths book feels very much like it is a rough draft of a story as there are too many areas that need fleshing out. Ss several other reviewers have said the main character progresses too quickly and all the characters act childish/ not like real people (they are too willing to believe people and agree to different ideas). I also feel like the world building could be dramatically improved most notably that the Barrens of the two cities act way too much like kings of city-states.
To sum up, this book feels like Patrick Rothfuss's stories if he had been hit in the head by a rock! my advice save your time and just read the name of the wind.
Young adults will be fully engaged with the various characters journeys. As an older person I let myself into this world and didn't feel like it was merely a formula fantasy.
In Path of the Calm, Kris Hiatt creates a world and works to share that world with his readers with as much detail as he can. The book allowed me as a reader to experience each moment of Treace's life as he is pulled deeper into the intrigue between the church, the college, and two dukedoms. I admire the author's detail in the story that truly allows readers to see the world down to the touch of magic, describing a phenomena that we cannot experience. Follow characters as they travel between the Onneron College, where brothers come together to study and learn the paths of magic, the Onneron Church, that is now challenging the foundation of the College, and the two Dukedoms on the brink of war. Using several points-of view outside of Treace's readers receive a better understanding of the world and the growing tension between the factions. Every major character is given an introduction in the book, as well as chances to develop depth through their actions. Treace is more than the naive genius he appears to be at the beginning. His teachers have their pasts that have led them to him, parts of which are given to develop them. I honestly enjoyed reading the first book in the Saga of the Wolf, and would recommend it to others. I want others to experience this world that the author has provided, as well as the characters that are given life. Recommended Age Group: 12-16

This book is very well composed with some good characterization. The dialogue is good a little unrealistic at times but overall worked well with the flow. Not quite a masterpiece or classic but an excellent start to a series and if I'm not mistaken a first for the writer as well. The only issue I would have is pacing of timeline. In one book we covered four years of this character's life as well as the different skill sets he acquires in this time frame. I understand it's a fantastical setting however characters should be a bit more believable at least until you give me a reason as why this one is different. I don't want to be a cynic but a Master Smith by fourteen? I mean all the things a blacksmith has to craft, that's impossible. Had he used a different word choice such as weapons smith it might be different. At least that's a specialty focus with a smaller sample size of items. Like I said before awesome read did it in about six or seven hours total, kudos to the author can't wait to read up on Treace's further adventures.
I like the main character, Treace- a boy who lost his father and that is still a mystery as to why- he has a kind heart, a head for learning, and the desire to do well in all things. He becomes a good fighter, and a smith as he is taught by two good men. His mother has made him learn and so off to learn he goes. This character shows great maturity for someone so young. Regardless of his strengths he acts humble. His friendship and protectiveness of the young boy makes him all the more endearing. I want to read what comes next in this series.
I wanted to like the book more than I did. The plot was good and had enough to be interesting. I think in the end it was that the writing wasn't strong enough. The dialogs felt a bit stilted and not quite real. The main character was a bit too perfect and I didn't feel invested in him. I'll probably pick up the second book. I do like the fact that it talked about how religion would react to healing magic but it hasn't followed through on that yet.
I picked this book out on a whim. It came up on my recommendations list. I started and I could not put it down. I know the author is working on the next one it is called the path of tears. He said it will be out sometime in 2016. I can't wait. This will definitely be a book a reread in the future.
The main character was well developed and loved that he was not perfect (ie. See the ending of this book) Can't wait for book 2 to see how everything develops and if friends get to be reunited.
I enjoy the book even though the basic idea for was pretty standard. I liked the characters the good and the bad. There was good personality development and I will read the next book.
Enjoyed it, but it needs an editor bad. I'll keep reading because I'm interested in it and the story has soul and a lot of potential, but please, please do yourself (and your story) a favor and get an editor.
No real complaints killed some time but not one that I will look for the next in the series. Definitely needs an editor I got tired of making editing notes and just quit after awhile.
It's Avery good story, with in interiesting, though of very deep. Or complex characters..I annoyed at finding there is no second or third book available, so despite shallow characters I must somehow have become attached.
Promising fantasy series! Loved the character development and details of the magic system and action sequences. For a first time author, I think this book is a great setup to a series and I cannot wait to see where the story goes. I'm sure the next book will be even better.
