Being able to create books about history is a dream job for me since I’ve always been enthralled by history. When I was growing up in Georgetown, Ontario, our house was just around the corner from the town library. And I haunted its children’s section—reading sometimes four or five books a week. Historical fiction titles by writers like Geoffrey Trease and Rosemary Sutcliffe were particular favourites. I still treasure a copy of Ernest Thompson Seton’s Two Little Savages that I was given as a prize in a library reading contest in 1960.
Since ours was the only house in the neighbourhoood without a TV antenna on the roof, reading was my primary form of entertainment. My parents thought their four children would read more without a television to distract us. And they were right, we did — though we also showed up at our friends’ houses whenever our favourite shows were on!
Our family had moved to Georgetown from a small town in Scotland in 1956, when I was six years old. When I was thirteen we moved to Guelph, Ontario, and I went to high school and university there. My first real job after graduating with an English degree in 1971 was with Scholastic – then a fairly new publishing company in Canada. As an editor for Scholastic Inc. from 1972 to 1984 in both Toronto and New York, I was involved in the creation of Scholastic’s Canadian children’s publishing program as well as in the selecting of books for Scholastic’s school book clubs. (One of our early discoveries was the teenaged author Gordon Korman and his Bruno and Boots books.)
Between 1984 and 2004 I was the Editorial Director and Publisher of Madison Press Books in Toronto. While there, I helped to create a number of successful books for both adults and young readers including Robert Ballard’s The Discovery the Titanic, that has sold over 1.5 million copies, and TITANIC: An Illustrated History a book that provided inspiration for James Cameron’s epic movie. Among the award-winning children’s books that I edited and compiled are: Polar the Titanic Bear, On Board the Titanic, First to Fly, and Journey to Ellis Island.
The first children’s book that I actually both wrote and compiled was Anastasia’s Album: The Last Tsar’s Youngest Daughter Tells Her Own Story, which was published in 1996 and won a number of awards. In 1997 I wrote the text for Inside the Titanic, which featured amazing cutaway illustrations by Ken Marschall. The next year, with Laurie Coulter, I compiled a book filled with fascinating facts about the Titanic entitled 882 1/2 Amazing Answers to Your Questions About the Titanic. Laurie and I went on to write To Be A Princess in 2001 which was a Silver Birch and Red Cedar nominee. In 2004, the 60th anniversary of D-Day, I wrote On Juno Beach which won the Children’s Literature of Canada Information Book Award in 2005. The success of that book encouraged me to write At Vimy Ridge which appeared in 2007 and won the Norma Fleck Award in 2008.
In 2005, I decided to devote myself to writing full-time and have produced seven books since then: The Other Mozart: The Life of the Famous Chevalier de Saint George published Fall 2006; Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose: The Story of a Painting and Breakout Dinosaurs. DIEPPE: Canada’s Darkest Day of World War II was released in 2009 and was followed by the novel Prisoner of Dieppe in Scholastic’s new I Am Canada series. A second novel, Deadly Voyage appeared in Fall ’11 and for the 100th anniversary of the Titanic, I produced a large adult book entitled Gilded Lives, Fatal Voyage in Spring 2012.
This book is so incredibly informative. I really have nothing bad to say about it. It's easy to read and understand, so pretty much anyone can read it. I wouldn't purely use this book for a paper, but definitely as an add on type thing.
This Book is a really great and well written book. As already said on the cover, it really does answer all of your Questions that you could possibly have about the famous ship, Titanic. Another great thing is that it is a book for all ages so you and everyone in you family can read it. I recommend it to really anyone who likes to read and/or is interested about the Titanic.
I bought this book at the excellent Titanic Museum in Branson, MO. This book provided so much information on the making, sailing, and sinking of the Titanic, and later the search for and discovery of the wreck of the Titanic. It also provided personal stories of many of the passengers and crew who were on board the ill-fated maiden voyage. I loved the format in that it provided a lot of information in snippets, and the numerous illustrations and photos helped to bring this story to life. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the Titanic.
I have always found the disastrous sinking of the Titanic interesting. This was an interesting book filled with money facts about the Titanic. It details the journey of the Titanic from the building of the ship up to the night of the sinking. You have details about all the luxuries of the ship and what you could expect based on the class you were traveling in. There were lots of details about some of the passengers on the ship and their fate on the night of the sinking. It was interesting to read what happened to some of the survivors in the years after the sinking at the time this was published.
I loved how detailed this was! SO much fun and new information I didn't know before. I didn't like the incoinsistent references to passengers, there were simply too many to rember every detail about who was who and what class they were in. I also do not understand why the book started on fact #2? and yeah it was clever making it 882 1/2 facts for each ft long the ship was, but I could've done without the half fact at the end. Overall very interesting and I learned loads of new information about the ship and the sinking. There were also some spelling msitakes that were just from poor editing.
It may be a children’s book, but it’s a fantastic and concise book on Titanic—Informational, understandable, and broken up into bite-sized chunks for easy reading.
This just popped up on my feed as a recommendation so my rating is a five star for pretty much all books like this and/or about Titanic and my review is based on a quick reminder of it so there's not much to say except that it's cool book to have in the house (with the exception that this is discussing a tragedy, of course). Read about two years ago when I bought it for my daughter. She and I both have a fascination regarding the Titanic and I adore books like this. Trivia, photography, non-fiction coffee table type books. It was a fun and very quick read with a bunch of pictures/illustrations along with quick facts. A nice one to add to the more serious and longer books about the Titanic.
If you're looking for the perfect book to cover the entire topic of the Titanic, then this is the book for you. Filled with great photographs and exact information, this book covers it all. From the idea to create it, to the people who discovered it in 1986, this book has everything you'd be interested in. A great resource book!
This book is great for kids and adults alike who want to know more about the Titanic. My five year old is obsessed and this one was read over and over and over before it was due back to the library.
I read this when I was 10 years old. I just think this book is a really great book about Titanic facts. There’s pictures and it’s just great. 10 year old me was so fascinated.
All Titanic lovers must read this! It was very straight forward and covered a lot of the questions I had. I recommend this book for ages 12+ because it talks about very sensitive and tragic facts and events that demand full respect. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it because it taught me more about the beautiful ship than I've ever known. 882 1/2 Amazing Answers to Your Questions About the Titanic is worth reading!
Wonderful book. I picked it up while visiting the titanic museum in Tennessee. It covers so many interesting facts and perspectives. the final 1/2 question was an interesting one, will I always be obsessed with titanic? kind of hard to deny or answer so I get why it was only a half question. Anyways a perfect vacation book or gift for a titanic fanatic.
*This book was published ages ago so some of the information pertaining to the wreck has changed since it has come out.* I love this book. The format is fun, the bullets are informational, and the pictures are fantastic. A great intro into the life and death of the Titanic and those who were on board.
I’ve been doing research on the titanic ( which has been a long interest of mine ) for a book I am hoping to write! This book was very helpful and very interesting!! I’d recommend it for anyone wanting to know more about the titanic disaster. There are other things involved such as facts about the movie, and titanic survivors, very interesting read!
One of the first books I ever owned on the subject and one of my favorites because of the unusual format - 882 1/2 questions and answers that allows you to (re)discover the story of the Titanic in a different way.
Great book about the Titanic. I really enjoyed this, the format made it a fun read. I have Autism and I know that anyone who has autism and is interested in all aspects of the Titanic would love this book.
This was a quick read, filled with lots of great information. It is appropriate for it's age range, but even as an adult I found it to be informative. Be aware that this book is close to 25 years old and some of the information is outdated.
Fascinating read for any lovers of the Titanic. Gives you in depth answers to all the questions one could ask about the Titanic, its crew, the passengers, etc.
Pretty good book for a light read on the Titanic. I have one complaint: There was no question #1. Otherwise, a great read for older children or interested adults.
I bought this used for a friend who loves anything Titanic. I found it to be rather informative and decided I wanted to get myself a copy for my junior high classroom.
