Splat finds a late library book when he's cleaning his room, and is worried about the consequences of returning it.
Lots of patrons seem to have this problem - both children AND adults - and decide they'll just keep the book instead. WRONG! Librarians would much rather have the books back than collect fines.
My sister’s a teacher and it was just lying around. His anxiety is very relatable tho, i too would think that i’d end up in prison for not returning a book
Splat experiences some serious panic over his late library book (will they put him in jail? will they make him walk the plank???) but it all works out okay.
I read this for the "Book In A Series" part of my 2020 reading challenge. It was really cute, I liked how panicked Splat got over the library fine, and his little mugshot.
There are a couple of takeaways in this light, humorous picture book. First, Splat learns it's not the end of the world if your library book is overdue. I think the lesson would've had a greater impact if the book was really late but given that kids tend to worry over the littlest things perhaps the author makes his point. Second, introducing the idea of sharing and passing on those things (books, toys, and clothes) that no longer serve us or that we've outgrown is a great lesson that fosters compassion for others and our environment. However, I felt the overall story and its delivery was just OK, hence my 2-star rating.
I didn't live this one but didn't want to rate it down just because it wasn't what I wanted for a lesson. They talk about paying fines and we don't charge late fines. They already are confused and ask me if they have to pay w/o me reading this (shirt) one to them. Kids will understand the "I like it so much I don't want to return it."
I feel like I would have liked it more if the book actually had been VERY late and he had to pay A LOT when returning it. There was too much working us up to have that mild of an ending.
BTW, I don't know of a library that only charges 25c/wk. for overdue fees. Our libraries charge 20c/day, so that was relatable for me.
Splat is abashed to discover he's kept his library book past its due date! What will happen? Will he be sent to library jail? (If only...) Splat models good, responsible behavior when he returns his book, apologizes, and pays the late fee. There is a distinct lack of cursing the librarian and slamming his date due slip into the trash can, so our library patrons could learn something.
Really fun to read to your child book. Splat cleans his room and donates his things he no longer wants/useds. He comes across a favorite library book that he had hidden because he didn’t want to return it. He knows now that it’s long overdue and he must return it. Will he be in trouble? This book helps teaches children several good things.
Nothing too original here; my favorite part is always seeing Splat's expressions. I had the narrated Kindle version, and found the voices somewhat annoying; I even turned down the sound. And, yes, I currently have an overdue library book somewhere in my house that I cannot find.
I’ve been in Splat’s situation numerous times. We’ve all had a book that we didn’t want to return. In fact, Splat comes up with several scenarios that might happen when he returns the book. Read to see how it turns out.
Splat the cat's room is overflowing with stuff. His mom suggests they donate old items, and in the process Splat discovers a very overdue library book. What to do?!?!?! Will the librarian send him to jail or even worse, walk the plank?
