This volume was chock full of some of my favorite character actors: Elsa Lanchester, Edna May Oliver, Harry Davenport, and Edmund Gwenn just to name a few. The brief sketches tell you just enough to whet your desire to learn more about these talented individuals.
The Name Below The Title, Volume 2 is another fast-paced and well-researched read from Rupert Alistair. Each actors' biography is the perfect length and includes lots of interesting tidbits about both their personal and professional lives. Very informative and entertaining . . .
This is a must read book for old movie buffs. This book offers informative glimpses into the lives of actors and actresses of the Golden age of Hollywood.
I am an old movie fan and can remember some of the actors and actresses who are mentioned in this book. It was very nice to read of some of the other films they had appeared in which I have not seen
I would recommend this book to any reader that is a fan of the Golden years of Hollywood. If Amazon doesn't stop requiring more words I will not leave anymore feedback!!!
This book was good for information about the actors' life but I wished there were more pictures of their movies so you can recall who they were. I would recommend this ebook if you're familiar with the names .
This is the second installment of Rupert Alistair’s look at classic movie character actors. It’s fun to read the biographies of these famous supporting actors who many fans of classic movies know. Yet we don’t always “know” them because they usually didn’t have the “star” spotlight upon them. There is the occasional actor who is highlighted where I realize they were in a movie and I didn’t know that was them. That perhaps is a tribute they may like — the hallmark of the true character actor — letting the acting truly take over. This is a good book for a quick, fun read. Onward to number 3 in the series.
Liked this even better than the first one, as the selection of actors was even better than in Volume I. Have heard of all 20, there was only one actor I wasn't at all interested in.
I really enjoyed this book: 4 1/2 *.
Golden Age in this case really does mean films from the 1930s - 1950s. Most of the actors were born in the last couple of decades of the 1800's.
These short (3-4 page) bios of character actors are a great introduction to these familiar but often unknown performers. Each entry gives a brief overview of the actor’s life and career, mentioning their most famous performances. For the casual movie fan, it’s a nice resource. For more serious fans, it’s a good place to start.
If you like classic movies, you will know all of most of the actors featured in this book. There are brief biographies of 20 character actors. Una Merkel, Conrad Veidt, sheer bliss!
