When strange relatives lay claim to the old MacLuster estate in a small West Virginia town, mysterious deaths and disappearances plague the populace. Will a simple Appalachian teenager named Johnny Treadwell be able to survive a centuries old supernatural turf war, or will he flee with his mysterious lover and leave the town to burn?
Book 1-4 The Forest of Bleeding Trees is a set of 5 books, with book 5 still in progress. I don't normally write a review for a series, usually for each book as I finish them. But this group needs to be written as one. I feel that if I did each book individually, I would give away to much. The Author has done it again! This set of books are right out of todays world and the fantasy world. The two intertwine together wonderfully. I found myself so absorbed in the story, that when I reached the end of the book, I was dissapointed that it ended. I love the characters and how they come from poor and the rich and neither cares. Yet there seems to be a lot of the poor folk dissappering and the really rich seem to be growing bigger. There are secrets all around and as you read on you find out more and more. Some go as far back as hundreds of years. West Virginia is the perfect place for this story. The way the town and its people was discribed is spot on. I could picture the town and the people and how they are. But what are the generations after generations of some of the town people keeping secret? The people that took over the mansion, had and still has me guessing who or what they really are. Every time I think I know them, something changes it. I hope book 5 explains it all. They are desendents of the last owner and are very strange indead. They have certain powers, but not really. They have hudrededs of Ravens for pets and protection, strange. The redneck neighbor boy down the holler from the mansion took on a job at the mansion. Good hard worker, but he can fly, or can he? He finds out that there is a human eating creature locked away in one of the rooms in the masion, or is he being lied to just on spite? And how does a 18 year old manage to be in love with two completly opposite girls and have hot sex with both and still live? Yet all the secrets, all the killings, all the dsisaperances, all the so called creatures, all the towns people, all the undead, are working their way up to something big. And I just can't put my fingure on what it is and why. The writing was superb and steady paced. Even though it jumps around some, I found it very easy to follow. It kept my attention all the way through, nonstop till the end of book4. It is full of suspense, romance, friendship, becoming a man and head of the house, family, Vampires, Wovles or Werewovles?, Ravens and a strange forest garden with trees and red water, boy with black wings? and undead dead. There is enough to keep you wondering who is who or what? This is great for High School and up. I can't wait for book 5 to come out so I can see if I'm right and how many more secrets are in this West Virginia town.
This is a paranormal short story. Adults only due to the sexual content. The third book in the Forest of Bleeding Trees. You must read the previous two books, The Hunter and The Prey, in order to understand the complete story. This book picks up where The Prey leaves off. Another great story, I am so smitten with Johnny. He strives to be the man of his house, and do right by everyone. And Lili is mesmerizing, I love her sass, but behind tough exterior she has a broken heart.
Johnny has food on his table, his family is taken care of. Yes, he is content and he has to give thanks to his neighbors. But all the chaos around his small town all started to happen when they moved into the old MacLuster Estate. But Johnny knows all too well, you don't bite the hand that feeds you. But how much more has to happen in this small town before the authorities come knocking at Lili's door. Not to mention all the mysterious things that Johnny is hearing and witnessing. It's unnerving and exciting at the same time.
favorite passages: "Just his luck, he might be sailing over the estate like some kind of down-country Peter Pan and get noticed by Heywood, or his own cousin Bubba." "Moderately," Lili answered, "I can't teach stupid." "The path back to his cabin would have been dark by then, but between the last dying embers of a lively orange sunset and a half moon rising, he had plenty of light to see his way home." "The stubby brown and green groundcover had a thin layer of white snow covering it now, transforming the landscape into another place." "Instead, she watched the wildly tumbling, twisting and spiraling snowflakes descending from the depthless grey winter sky, no two of them alike." "His whole family had new shoes, they were eating better that they had in years, and everyone had a reason to be happy... Mostly because of the Maclusters." "Even compasses don't always work during that piquant hour as the sky changes her veil from the light of day to the shadow of night." "This was something else entirely, a turning and twisting and living red stain that looked like a wound on the white pristine carpet of the earth."
*I received this book in exchange of an honest review* I know that this third part might appear really short to some readers but please believe me when i say it is wonderfully worth it and that the events happening are so powerful and shocking that you will need to take a breather!!!!! In this part, the writing style will entwine different sides of the story at once, different situations happening to different characters simultanestly!!! And with this new upbeat flow "The Crimson Gate" will blow you away!!!! The focus is no longer on Johnny only, it's more of a kaleidoscope of characters reaching the same point of no return: the arrival of death's greatest disciple in town.... A little less blurry, the changes and revelations are popping up one by one, to amaze you further and further!!!!! Thrilling, exciting, utterly addictive and so amazingly creative, this series is starting to show some inclinations of being a masterpiece!!!!!
The forest bleeds! So this is the 3rd installment in this amazing series by P. Mattern. Johnny is finding out more secrets in this book. Lili is letting him in on some of her hidden treasures. People are disappearing and the police are baffled. Johnny is keeping a close eye on his beloved sister who is being pursued by Lili's uncle. And let's talk about Lili! We see a more "human" side of her, if you will. We learn some things about her past. Will she be able to keep herself safe? And will they be able to stop the person who is behind the disappearances? Another great addition to the masterpieces by the phenom that is P. Mattern!
This is part 3 in this serial. You do need to read the previous two books before reading this novella. They are all quick reads. Don't expect your questions to be answered, just yet though. I think after reading this one, I have even more questions. It does have me hooked and I have to know what's going on.
Lili plays a bigger part in this book. I still have no clue what will happen. Maybe we will find out in part 4.
Her uncle also plays a part with courting Tess.
There are more disappearances, with no explanations yet. There are some clues at the end of this read, but not enough to even make a wild guess yet.
Lili has more secrets than you can guess at. Johnny is stuck between a rock and a hard place. There's a new character in town, you simply must read about this character. And more citizens are disappearing. Other people in this intriguing story have some drama you don't want to put down! Believe me this is an entertaining and emotional read! Loved the ride!
Most recent installment in the Forest of Bleeding Trees Series is full of mystery, thrills and suspense as Johnny Treadwell finds himself in love with two young women, and more murders and mutilations and missing persons plague the small West Virginian town. Each installment is more intriguing than the next!
This series will have you clinging word for word as a local boy learns he can fly, a father's return that terrifies his daughter, siblings and father.
This series is written with much passion and tantalizes your senses for more than a world full of humans. An intricately woven story that has something for each generation it encounters~
I love it!!!! All the twists and turns, the parts that make you wonder... They are just so awesome!!!!! I loved every minute of it. That cliff hanger though... I am almost afraid to read the next book and to have to wait for the next one to come out its just that good. I have loved every one of these so far and I can't wait for to read the rest.
