Biloxi: 300 Years

Rate this book
More than three hundred years of Biloxi history, heritage, and culture have been skillfully captured by Val Husley in Biloxi: 300 Years. Beginning with its earliest inhabitants, countless centuries before the 1699 arrival of the French, Val methodically traces the evolution of the city on the Mississippi Sound from its earliest settlers to its days as an emerging antebellum escape, its blossoming into an industrious seafood producer in the late nineteenth century, and its development into today's bustling four-season resort.

More than two hundred fifty photographs and illustrations bring life to the people, places, and events which have shaped Biloxi's history. The crew of a Biloxi oyster schooner is seen hard at work harvesting the bivalves from the Mississippi Sound; street cars are viewed careening down turn-of-the-century Howard Avenue; a devastated Biloxi waterfront is pictured following the 1947 hurricane and again after Hurricane Camille. These scenes and many others trace Biloxi's development through three centuries and, with author Husley's historical text, help the reader discover the city's rich history, diverseness and just how resilient this coastal community truly is.
