I 'm very lucky to have the indulgence of time and space to enable me to write. I took a sabbatical from work to accompany my partner on his bucket list travels and adventures, and never went back. I really thought I would struggle with all the free time, so decided to write to keep myself occupied. Now writing has consumed my time and I am never sure where we will be or when, hence my novels could be classed 'international' as they may have been written across a few countries. We are still travelling, although we do pop back to the UK for a few months every now and again.

I love the fact that no matter what our age we can use new technology to connect to the rest of the world and enhance our lives. Back in the UK I have my friends and family and with emails, phones, skype or face-time, we are never out of touch for long. Even my mother at eighty-six uses face-time to catch up with me. I have the world at my fingertips and only twenty-four hours away from anywhere.

Being a 'mature aging gracefully' woman, I feel akin to the problems of aging and relationships. I spent many years on my own before finding my truly remarkable and very patient partner who I happily gave up my whole world for. My stories are about mature relationships with mature people. People who have character and humour, who have a history; people just like us.

I like to call it Hen Lit, not Chick Lit, but it is not just about falling in love. They are about real relationships.

I hope you enjoy my stories. Please check my web page or social media pages if you would like to contact me. I love emails and try to answer every one as soon as possible.

there were two reasons I read this book. 1- I hope to be more active with netgalley and wish to write helpful reviews and better critique authors' works, 2- to be meta reviewing a book on book reviews.

I was a little frustrated that approximately a third of this book was why it was important to review books especially for indie authors. And a little history of what publishers did with reviews interesting enough but not helpful to me.

However her tips and suggestions were helpful and she gave practical examples to prevent this from being a how to guide; which is nigh impossible as reviews are so subjective and personal for the most part no one can provide a step by step guide. Thos book lived up to its title though in spite of challenges of showing how to review a book and I hope having read it makes me a better reviewer.

How to Write a Simple Book Review is a wonderful, concise book to do just that for beginners or those wanting to improve their review skills. The book has formal, semi-formal, and informal guidelines. Templates are great! Star guide lines and how to vary it to suit yourself. Lots of tips and techniques. Lists of reviewer links and pages to encourage interaction. I thought it was a great book!

Although I didn't get a lot from it myself (I'm a bookworm who is naturally opinionated, so ... I've been reviewing for a while, obviously ... :P), for someone who has never written a book review before, this is an excellent guide. It also offers some interesting statistics and such on how reviews effect buyers' choices, why you should review books, etc.

At times, it was somewhat difficult to read with a lot more focus on why you should review than on actual writing reviews (which I didn't appreciate; why you should review could easily be stated in a few sentences, in my opinion) and needed some editing, but, overall, it is a good guide for a reader who would like to share their thoughts with other people in a neat, concise way.

I received a e-book version of this book through a giveaway on LibraryThing from the author, and the following is my honest opinion.

To set the record straight I’ve been a Book Reviewer since last August and when I saw Ms. Abbott’s book being offered as a giveaway I decided to enter it basically to see if I’ve learning anything through my own experiences writing reviews. Surprise it to say I’ve not, which means the author has done a thorough job in presenting the information contained in this book.

I didn’t start being a Book Reviewer, I started as an author almost three years, and currently have two books written and self-published. I began reading/reviewing books as a way of increasing my writing knowledge with books I’d obtained through giveaways throughout the internet.

Ms. Abbott is correct is saying authors are always looking for reviewers of their books which is why many times they use giveaways. The unfortunately thing is while they hope they get a review for each book they giveaway, they seldom get it. So if you happen to receive a book through a giveaway, kindly right a review for the author in return. And if you do write a review for such a book, there is a FTC regulation which states you need to disclose this information in the review, just like I have here.

There are several kinds of reviews prevalent on sites like Amazon, and they run the gamut from quick one sentence jobs to those are filled with spoilers [giving away the plotline/detailed information about the book].

The real function of a review is to whet a potential reader’s interest in the book; that they wind up buying. One of the things I try to do in my review is to personalize it or to give a reference to a movie or even a song which someone reading the review can relate to.

While the author had mentioned authors being published by traditional publishers have an advantage over indie authors is the publishers handle promotions of the books. The fact of the matter is many times these authors at times have to do quite a bit of the promotions on their own.

How can you tell if you’ve written a good review? One of the ways is the HELPFUL votes your review has review. As for myself, it’s when the authors sends a THANK YOU message telling you how much they’ve enjoyed reading your review.

For educating others in becoming a book reviewer, I’ve given Ms. Allyson R Abbott 5 STARS.

NOTE: The author has used the British spelling of certain words and phrases in writing her book.

The Book Does Make It Easy

I picked up this book because I try to leave reviews on the books I read. If life is going at rocket speed I may just leave a star rating with the intention of a later review. Even though I have written a few reviews I frequently feel that my review could be better. I believe we are constantly learning and everything can be improved upon. This book offers a lot of help in writing reviews. I think it is aimed at those who never write reviews or a beginner. I am neither but I found a lot of good information in the book. I especially am fond of the templates and examples that were toward the end. The one thing I didn't care for, (it is what lead to the minus star), is the author repeatedly stating that reviews need to be written. This could be because I already understand that. I tried making allowances as I do think her intended audience are those readers who never thought to leave a review. However after a bit I started feeling like I was being beaten up over it. I am certain that was not the intention of the author but it did begin to feel that way. If you are looking for some guidance on how to write reviews I would still recommend this book. The information is worth it. With the exception of the repeated badgering for reviewing, the author writes with a helpful and knowledgeable attitude. The examples and templates are easy to follow and, I thought, very helpful.

Simple formal Literary
5. Where Amazon places recent book reviews.

9. Suggestions on creating your OWN Star grading system.
10. How to become a book reviewer via two suggested web sites.
11. Where to find good book reviews.
12. How to find Book Reviews (and reviewers) in Facebook groups.

How to write a simple book review by Allyson R. Abbott a fab five star read. It really is easier than you think to write a simple but interesting book review, this book gives you a good plan of action, good tips and guidelines and general things that you may not have even thought about previously. There were some areas that I didn’t find helpful but that was purely because it was an area I don’t read, but I even found that information interesting. There are some great examples of how your review is used and some great examples of how even a negative review can be helpful. One of the most helpful things I found was the information about Indie authors and how they work, there was so much I didn’t know and it just makes you more passionate about helping them. If you are interested in reading and haven’t been very confident about how to review but no how important they are to an author get this book, it will help you and give you confidence.

Encouraging Book

I was not aware how important a book review could be. I rarely give 3 stars. At times I've enjoyed educational books some have found to be boring. I enjoy many genres. The book dissects all aspects of book industry, and emphasizes the importance of honest reviews. I found the author to be thorough and passionate. Really inspiring. I've of late found myself writing reviews for books I enjoyed. Wanting to expand my vocabulary, I was looking on improving myself when commenting. Instead, I found out best to keep it simple. Thank you.

This short book on writing book reviews gives a lot of good information that any readers should leave reviews for books they read, even if they are a) short reviews with just a few words, b) negative reviews with respectful language, and c) honest opinions on a book. The advice given for writing them can apply to both fiction and non-fiction books. Abbott does a good job explaining how reviews are helpful for both authors and readers. Reviewers who have been writing reviews may pick up a new trick.or two, as I did, but for the most part this book is aimed for those who have never written a book review before but would like to.do so. This book is for that type of reader.

I decided to read this book for vindication… to see if I'm doing it right. Rarely have I found a book that so clearly expresses my own thoughts on a subject.

I started writing reviews on Amazon and Goodreads several years ago. I review everything that I read, and I read quite a bit. Because it is possible to get so many Kindle books at no cost, I have had the distinct pleasure of discovering some truly fine Indie authors. I still have my favorite big name authors - Stephen King, Clive Barker, Charlaine Harris, and the like - but without Kindle I would never have read some truly great books just because they weren't written by a name.

To be fair, before eBooks (and arthritis in my hands), I used to walk up and down the aisles of any bookstore just waiting for a cover to scream "check me out!" I discovered some of my favorite authors that very way.

Allyson points out the interesting fact of Indie publishing forcing writers to wear many hats, not the least of which is publicist. Some do it very well, putting heart and soul into both writing and marketing their book. She also points out that a writer can't get anywhere, no matter how hard they work at it, without readers. Yes, readers! That means you and me.

My favorite sentiment from the book is that writing a review - good, bad, or somewhere in between - is saying thank you to the author. You hated the book? Write a one star review that says why you hated it. Was it the bad spelling and punctuation? Was it terrible formatting and presentation? How is a writer to know why you gave it one star if you don't tell them. If you had that kind of problem, see if there is contact information somewhere in the book and let the author know your concerns. Be polite! Read your email six times and then read it again before you send it. Be positive! There must have been some redeeming quality that made you start, if not finish, the book.

Allyson also makes it very clear that even a one or two word review is the same as the one that is longer. It is the thank you the author needs to continue writing, the nod of appreciation for what you did or did not get from a book.

I tend to write several paragraphs when I review, but I never do spoilers, and I never give away the ending. This applies mostly to writing reviews of fiction, but in some ways will apply to non-fiction as well. My motto is tantalize but never tell.

A very well written encouraging guide with references "How To Write A Simple Book Review: Calling All Readers" authored by British novelist Allyson R. Abbott can be helpful to both the experienced reviewer and those who have yet to post their first review.

Using Amazon as a platform, Abbott fully explains in Amazon star and rating system mostly using "50 Shades of Gray" E.L. James as an example, while I usually find data info rather dull, it is a good idea to understand these basics. All types of review are covered: from the old school style book reports, to a formal literary review, to a basic simple review. While Abbott encourages all reviews on books: even those that are one word, to a few sentences. While it is true all reviews are important to authors and readers, I think there should be a division between reader comment and reader review. The difficulty of actually getting reviews is well documented, 2 reviews can be expected for every 100 books given away on average, Abbott relates her own experience of 543 of her short story download.

To be especially encouraging to new reviewers, Abbott touched only briefly on the negative aspect of review. Confusion over the Amazon star rating system, only scratches the surface. Authors who only want 4*-5* ratings for their 3* books will always be an issue, honest opinions should be valued and respected as long as they are ethically written and do not attack or bash an author or his/her work. I have avoided posting fair comprehensive review on Amazon, to avoid the probable unhelpful click. Goodreads only allows "likes" and this is better for new reviewers. Abbott discusses the book blogs, which are fun to read, I also agree with her observation that writing review gives the reader "closure" after finishing a book. There is much to consider after reading this recommended guide.

Excellent useful, enlightening, easy, informative reading. Most enjoyable.

The opening of Section 4: Tips on How to Write a Review. Allyson quotes Roger Ebert;

‘In my reviews, I feel it’s good to make it clear that I’m not proposing objective truth,
but subjective reactions;
a review should reflect the immediate experience.’

Allyson suggests in the same section and many others that all authors want is ‘a response, a hint, or a few words.’ She also explains how important your review is for other readers and for yourself, the reader.

On the next page she explains how to make notes on your kindle to help you to review a book. She also directs her readers to a program on the web which helps to check for errors. She also advises that if your review is full of errors and spelling mistakes, you will not be taken seriously. I found this useful.

Allyson writes as if she is standing with you teaching you how to do a review. She also sets out many examples of how to develop your own review process.

As a new reviewer, I found your book very helpful. Allyson, thank you very much! I also found a couple of typos in your book, (smile). I am definitely going to follow you.

Very informally informative

I felt this book have great strategies to get started leaving book reviews, especially for the novice or casual reviewer. The biggest take away is to write the review for yourself, other readers and the author. This gave me the confidence to even write this review. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in starting to leave reviews and I'll certainly be referring back to it in the future as I practice leaving more reviews.

From simple to whatever you want to make it.

It’s been almost a year since I began writing reviews and actually published them. I remember that first review… well um ok maybe it wasn’t my first review if you want to consider those book reports you were required to write in school, let alone the literary analysis required in college… but ok my first published review that I didn’t do because I had to in order to earn a grade but simply because I wanted to express my opinion and say thank you to an author. Since then I’ve written, edited and published well over a few hundred reviews. That being said you might be asking why I would even read this book in the first place. Obviously, I know how to write a review. And, yeah I know that is subjective too… because face it we all have different expectations from a review. But the reality is once upon a time I felt some anxiety about writing reviews. I still do sometimes. I also questioned whether writing a review was really important. After all, I seldom made purchases based on reviews. But the reality is that since the advent of Indie publishing combined with Amazon’s review system the customer review has gained in significance and influences a lot in the publishing industry today.

Ms. Abbot’s book not only explains the difference in types of reviews and how to write one but she explains the importance of reviews to an author’s career these days whether they are positive, negative, short or long. She touches on a few hotbeds when it comes to the things that can get your review removed or banned from some sites… things like being a relative or friend of the author or being paid for the review. She outlines how you can take the one or two-word review and turn it into a review of over fifty words simply and easily. She provides simple templates for assigning star values to the books you read. All in all, for such a short read this book is chock full of helpful information for the novice reviewer. I enjoyed reading it not just from the aspect of a simple how to but for the explanation of how the industry has evolved and the impact reviews have on an author’s success.

So if you haven’t started leaving reviews for the books you read consider this... Leaving a review doesn’t have to be lengthy. It doesn’t have to be glowing. It can simply be your “thank you” to the author for a book you enjoyed reading. It can also be the feedback the author needs to hone their craft. It can be your method of sharing your love of reading with others. Finally, it can be your closure to a book read. I’d never thought about this last one before. It’s a lovely sentiment as we all become rather connected to the characters and stories we read. If you’ve been on the fence about leaving a review and maybe don’t know where to start How to Write a Simple Book Review is a good place to start.

And for those of you snickering over the fact that I wrote a longer review… much more than 50 words for a 30-page book… yeah, I know maybe I should be looking for a book on how to write short concise reviews… I could easily apply what Ms. Abbot demonstrates... but then that wouldn’t be me :)

How to Write a Simple Book Review: It's easier than you think by Allyson R. Abbott was a very informational read. It is filled with good advice for anyone that has ever thought of writing a review or for someone looking to improve your own writing style. I especially liked how the book read almost like you were having a conversation with the author. This style helped to keep what was essentially a textbook from becoming boring. I have to give this book a five star rating for the simple fact it helped me become a better reviewer by reading it.

I would like to thank the author for sending me an electronic copy of her book, which I won in the Librarything Member's Giveaway. This is my honest review.

This was a very simple book to read which I would recommend to all who have little knowledge of writing reviews. I myself always write a review, but any doubts as to whether my reviews have been good enough have now been dispelled.

All Reviews Are Good Reviews!

Writing a review on a book about how to write reviews sounds like the start of a bad joke, but Allyson R. Abbott brought to light so many aspects of the book industry I had never considered I can't imagine having read "How to Write a Simple Book Review" without leaving a word of thanks to the author. As a reader, I do wonder if authors care what I think about their work or whether I leave a "Good job!" on one of their pieces I particularly enjoyed yet don't have a whole lot of "intelligent commentary" to leave in exchange for my enjoyment. The fact sites such as Amazon actually make an author's work more or less visible based on the sheer number of reviews -negative or positive- is surprising to me.

I want more writing from authors I enjoy so if they get more visibility which leads to more profit which leads to more return on their writing investment? That should lead to me getting more of their writing! I can't see that as anything other than a win-win situation.

Writing a review as a form of closure to having finished the book is also a new concept to me. I often have the "book hangover" effect where I have to sit and digest the last read I finished before I can even contemplate starting another book -even one by the same author- so I liked Abbott pointed out reviewing can give me the opportunity to put my thoughts into words to shorten the period of time I spend dwelling on my last read. I like the idea my personal views could be meaningful to another reader too. I'll admit I've bought a book based on a particularly good review. I found Abbott's suggestions about leaving a "gut reaction review" very helpful since that's what I really look for in a review on a book I am considering spending money on.

Overall, I'd give 5 stars to How to Write a Simple Book Review for making reviewing easy to understand in terms of importance to authors as well as readers, accessible to everyone, and fun as a process to enhance the experience of reading.

How To Write a Simple Book Review: It’s easier than you think by Allyson R. Abbott

5 Stars

I just recently began writing reviews for the millions of books I read, and I'm ashamed to say that there are so many I've read and never reviewed, this I need to fix. I was scared at first and have written some I'm sure were not the greatest but have gotten better I think with practice. This book was great and gave many helpful tips and was very easy to follow and understand. I learned a lot more about the importance of a review for authors and really anything that I've bought online. The outlines she gives you for making your own charts that would be really easy to go through while reading were great. I've tried the taking notes approach but it's so hard sometimes to know what is important to a story until you've reached the end and then you realize you read something you find important and can't remember where in the book it was.

She gives lists of great sights to visit and I am really glad I read this book and I will be taking a lot of what she wrote and using it in my own reviews. She makes you realize it's important to create your own style and there's no wrong way to do it. I will also be looking up everything else she has written as I really liked her writing style. I recommend this book to anyone that wants a little more insight to reviews or someone that has never written one...it's a fantastic place to start.

How to Write a Simple Book Review: It’s Easier Than You Think is an incredibly interesting and helpful guide by Allyson R. Abbott. The book explains the different types of reviews, the grading/rating system, personalising reviews, why reviews are so important for authors, and all about the process of writing a review- even offering suggestions and templates to make the whole process easier. The book will help you decide what to write and how much you want to write- in a simple and easy to understand manner.
Ms. Abbot explains that reviewing books needn’t be daunting or difficult. She explains that starting of small, and as with most anything we learn, practice will make you more confident.
I found this guide to be very easy to understand, thought-provoking, informative and really helpful. I recommend this book to anyone who is passionate about books and the authors who create those books. This guide will simplify the whole reviewing process, explain the misconceptions, and give you an insight and understanding of the whole publishing/promoting/reviewing process. But ultimately, Ms. Abbott leaves you with the knowledge that a book review is an opinion, your opinion counts, and there is no right or wrong review.

Thank you, Ms. Abbott!

Serves its purpose

I purchased this book because I have become an avid book reader recently as well as an avid Kindle user. The book seemed cheap and short, and it was. I was familiar with most ideas suggested as they seemed like common sense when writing feedback but the book didn't fail in providing extra perspective. I found it most useful for me personally especially in the beginning when it clarified that there is not only one way to make a good review. I was indeed caught up somehow inside my head of the old times and the old review formal publishings. Glad that this book stuck to the original reason I got it: I wanted to get better at THIS type of review. Turns out that I was doing it decently all along, but I've definitely become more motivated in working on the structure and developing my own template in the near future. I would also like to thank the author for reminding me about the perspective of authors in general and the perspective of other readers. It made me feel like a review could often matter a lot and it's worth putting some honest thought into it.

How to Write a Simple Book Review
By Allyson R Abbott
5 stars!
It is so weird to be writing a review about a book that’s about writing reviews. For me I am happy with the way in which I write my reviews, I like to think that when I love a book I point out why and when I’m not sure I am considerate to the author who at the end of the days has spent ages writing it - so I really wanted to read this book to see if I could improve them in any way. What I found really useful about this book is just why reviews are so important to authors both positive and negative. I thought that the author of the book explained everything about reviewing books really well. I know it has certainly made me think about what I write and it has definitely helped me refine my reviews slightly so they are useful to the author and other readers. So if you are new to reviewing or even if you have written hundreds I would definitely recommend reading this book – it has some really great tips in there to make your reviews helpful to authors and readers alike.

How to Write a Simple Book Review: It's easier then you think by Allyson R. Abbott is a great resource on how to write a simple review. This book is a little different then what I normally read by this author. Her writing style still comes through and makes it easy to understand. This book is a step by step way to write an easy review that will take no time at all. Authors love reviews, good or bad, it is the feedback on their writing that makes a difference to them. This book would be helpful too all even if you already know how to write reviews. It gives you tips on how you can make your review better. One thing that I enjoyed was how this author talked about the process of what an author goes through to even get a book published. This book goes from the start of the process until the end. I highly recommend this book to everyone as it will help those who have never wrote a review and also those who are looking to improve.

This book has some interesting information on the importance of reviews for authors. I can definitely see how it could help to remove any reservations one might have about writing a book review. The author talks about finding a new editor over a book with bad grammar, and I couldn't help but notice all of the grammatical errors in this book as well. This was slightly distracting, but the book was otherwise very interesting and informative. If you're looking for more confidence or direction when writing a book review, or just looking for a good outline to use, this is a great book.

I like to read quite a bit but have rarely thought about giving a book review. This book let me know how valuable re views are and how much authors appreciate them. Never again will I read a book and not give atleast a short review of it.
As for this book; it was an easy read and I learned a lot about the different kinds of reviews there are. I really liked how the author gave templates for doing reviews and offered a ton of links to help me out. I will definitely be referring back to this book as I write my reviews.

A good read on writing reviews

I downloaded this book during a free promotion. Lots of good nuggets of information about writing book reviews. Even though it was written in 2015, some information is outdated but still useful. The author breaks down the star system and what the stars mean. Could be easily be translated to product reviews as well. The examples and templates for writing the most useful reviews are pure gold. If you have ever been nervous about writing reviews or want to make sure your reviews are objective and useful this book is for you.
