Melody Beattie

Melody Beattie was an American self-help author best known for her groundbreaking work on codependency. Born in 1948 in Minnesota, she endured a traumatic childhood marked by abuse and early substance addiction. After achieving sobriety, she became a licensed addiction counselor and began writing to help others navigate emotional recovery. Her 1986 book Codependent No More became a bestseller, selling eight million copies and helping to bring the concept of codependency into mainstream awareness. Over her career, she authored 18 books, including Beyond Codependency, The Language of Letting Go, and Make Miracles in Forty Days. Though her work is often associated with Co-Dependents Anonymous, her books were independent of the program.
Beattie’s personal life reflected many of the struggles she addressed in her work, including four marriages and the loss of a son. Her writing often drew from her own experiences with grief, addiction, and healing. In early 2025, she was forced to evacuate her Malibu home due to wildfires and died shortly after at her daughter’s home in Los Angeles from heart failure.

My favorite meditation book...it has something for everyone! It is the sequel to the original, Language of Letting Go, hence the "More", and for it just touched a deeper soul nerve as I have used it throughout the years.

It is based on the premise of "letting go", but gives you much more than what you release. Here is an excerpt from Page 4 (January 2nd):

The universe will help us, but we need to do our part. Here's an acronym, My Part, to help you remember to do that.

Manifest
Your

Power
Accept
Relax
Trust

Too often we tell ourselves the only way to get from point A to B-or Z-is tense up, to obsess a little (or a lot), and to live in fear and anxiety until we get what we want.

That isn't the path to success. That's the path to fear and anxiety.

Accept. Relax. Breathe. Let go. Trust yourself, God, the universe to manifest the best possible destiny when the time is right for you.

God, help me make the journey from fear and control to letting go and stepping into my true power.

Have gone through two sets of these books as I use one daily at work and one at home. They are daily short readings on rebuilding your life from the inside. Really good for survivors of trauma such as from living with a narcissist. Every emotion is covered in a slow, gentle way because she knows what is needed to take just one little step forward. She's been there; done that.

I loved the format of having daily readings and that they weren’t too long or wordy. Nice way to start the day with a bit of encouragement and challenge on some of the days. I appreciated the ones that were more God based and struggled with the ones that were more of a new age religion based. I understand the author wanted to appeal to all, however due to all the new age based days I am reluctant to share this to others.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

I have been reading the previous book (language of letting go: daily meditations) for the last 5 years or so. Meanwhile I started this one and first it resonated less with me. It seems as I changed a fair bit in the last years, this year the sequel really hits home for me.

Whilst book I is more focused on moving beyond codependency, book II offers guidance based on her own experiences as a daily meditation.

I absolutely loved Melody’s first edition of this book and was excited to read this one. Her daily meditations always hit the nail on the head for me in the first book. In this edition—though still very thought provoking and insightful—it felt like 70% of the daily excerpts used skydiving analogies (cool if you are familiar with skydiving!) or other very specific personal stories. Because of that it was a bit harder to make each lesson applicable to my own life/situation.

I've got problems in my life, I suspect that everyone does.
Some people get on with it, others turn to self help books.
Which brings me to "More Language of Letting Go: 366 New Daily Meditations."
Normally I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, but I try to read outside my personal box once in a while.
Insofar as it makes any sense at all the book argues that (a) You are an individual and need to see yourself as one, (b) but you are not alone because the Christian God is always with you, and (c) you will be a winner, regardless of the outcome.
Which would seem to indicate if you are Muslim, Jewish, or anything other than Christian it would appear you are doomed (doomed was not the first word that came to mind!)
"Each time we talk to God, we are transformed. Each time we connect with our Higher Power, we are heard, touched, and changed for the best."
Oh dear me! And, here's the problem, there is no God. We live, we die, the end.
A self-help book which has religion at its core is about as helpful as, to quote my wife, "an ashtray on a motorbike."
In the words of Dorothy L. Parker:- "This wasn't just plain terrible, this was fancy terrible. This was terrible with raisins in it."
Dreadful stuff written by a snake oil saleswoman

Each Day Was A New Perspective

I chose a 5star rating because when I read Melody's books, I always feel a sense of home and being able to have a new perspective on life and the situations that are presenting themselves in mine. Each day was something new and beautiful that I could apply to myself. I would journal after each day and it was beautiful to see how much I've evolved from reading her stories and daily devotional. I recommend this book for everyone: the dreamers, the doers, and everything in between. Enjoy.

I have read a few of Melody Beattie's books and this one is again a very good one for those who are on a path of self discovery and spiritually conscious contact. I have not read the entire book as it's a year long "pilgrimage" but I've added it to my libary and will do the activities inside and follow along on the correct "day" that corresponds to "today".

This is a sweet little book with a positive message, one many of us need now. It could’ve used some proofreading and fewer skydiving stories but overall I really enjoyed blasting through the 366 short vignettes in just a few days. I would definitely read it again at a more leisurely pace, which is how it was intended.

This daily meditation book is a must read for everyone, co-dependent or not! Every page offers healthy insight and a positive guide to manage emotions that every human being has felt and has not known how to process. I want to give this to all of my family and friends!

This is a great tool for setting boundaries, doing daily practices and meditation and growing your awareness and self . I personally recommend this book with a notebook to write down the questions and practices and doing it along with the days throughout the entire year.

Couldn't finish it
I grew tired of how often the author used the phrase, "Whatever" so I threw the book out and just kept a few pages with helpful suggestions
