Tor.com Publishing's first ebook bundle contains all our novellas published in September 2015:The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps by Kai Ashante Wilson, Witches of Lychford by Paul Cornell, Sunset Mantle by Alter S. Reiss, and Binti by Nnedi Okorafor.
2020-09: Sorcerer of the Wildeeps: 3.5 stars: While I liked the writing, I had a little trouble being totally captured by this story. I did like its partly science fiction (e.g. FTL), partly fantasy (e.g. swords and valiant warriors) aspects, and the vibrant conversations amongst the characters. I did find that my attention kept sliding away closer to the end of the story, when demigods Demane and the Captain were hunting the tiger-monster-creature-thing.
2020-09: Sunset Mantle: 3.5 stars: Enjoyable story of an aging warrior who fights for a town, and his blind wife. I realize that this is because this is a novella, but I didn't get a great sense of the world, and had some difficulty understanding the politics of the story.
2019-07: Witches of Lychford: 4 stars: I had been meaning to get to this novella for years. I’ve read a longer work by Paul Cornell, which was dark, weird and horror-filled, so I was curious about this shorter tale. This wasn’t a horror story, except in the sense of a corporation whose CEO is trying to muscle his company into the village, which would radically change the town's flavour and rhythms, and, here's the fantasy part: would lead to the influx of dark spirits/somethings. I liked the three women in this story (Judith, Lydia and Autumn), each struggling to see the value of each others’ beliefs and to deal with their pasts, while needing to work together to protect their town. There's a fair amount of sadness and trauma each woman has to process as well as lay to rest for their collective efforts to have any effect on the town. For a short work, there was a nice mix character development and external threat. By the time I'd finished, I knew that I wanted to spend more time with each of these women, so I’m glad there are further novellas in this series.
I loved this bundle. Some of the stories were great, some not so much -- but I would probably never have listened to multiple novellas otherwise. I'm definitely planning to buy the next collection.
