This book presents a comprehensive review of the science, the social and environmental issues and the debates surrounding climate change, as well as reviewing various proposed ways of addressing the issues. The book is very accessible and well structured. It also deals with the common sceptical arguments thoroughly. The media tend to deal with issues such as climate change by presenting the case for and the case against as though they had equal backing, even where this is clearly not the case. This book provides a thorough review of the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is happening and of its causes. It leaves you with little doubt that the planet is warming and that this is caused by human activities. My only criticism would be that, after having clearly set out the enormity of the challenge facing humanity, the chapter about what we could do personally felt a little flimsy and left me feeling that global action is highly unlikely to be swift and far-reaching enough to address the problem.
A pretty good introduction to the topic in my opinion. It covers science, history, political debates and course of action. It makes a good job of showing all sides of the debate (e.g. controversy about the feasibility of a 100% switch to renewable energy) while smashing negationist arguments. My only negative comment is that it's ten years old, so a bunch of things feel outdated now. Still, I would recommend it as an introductory source of different aspects of the issue.
Informative on both the causal mechanisms and possible solutions to climate change, and careful to point out lingering uncertainties about the interactions of various factors affecting the climate, this book was straightforward and entertaining but far from enthralling.
THANKS KYLE for the gift! This is a great NEUTRAL book that discusses global climate change: its various causes, effects, and what human actions either way would (hypothetically) do to change earth's climate. You can flip through and just read the "quickie" information boxes, go more in depth, or even jump into case studies. The book really lets you learn as much as you want about the topic. Well organized, a great read. No matter which side of the debate you are on, this will add to your knowledge of the topic.
A useful introduction, but very short on political and economic analysis. That said, I didn't expect much in that respect. The Rough Guide formatting is a little annoying.
