Excellent true story about a near-disastrous flight by the Navy from San Francisco to Honolulu. In 1925, aircraft were in the early development stages, and the military saw the potential value of having air superiority and so they kept trying to make improvements. This story is about the US Navy's attempt to make the first flight from the continent to Hawaii.
Navy Commander John Rogers and his crew did an amazing job of preparing for the flight, working within and around the politics of the Navy vs Army (vs potential Air Force) in Washington DC, and doing what they could during the flight to survive. They actually did not make it to Hawaii, landing in the ocean and then having to figure out how to "sail" their plane towards the islands with the hope of getting rescued.
It is an amazing story, and well-told by an otherwise unknown author. Between this book and "The Cowboy and the Cossack" you will fall in love with reading! Track this one down and be prepared to discover that need to read "just one more chapter" each time you pick it up.
