Applied Ballistics For Long-Range Shooting: Understanding the Elements and Application of External Ballistics for Successful Long-Range Target Shooting and Hunting

Rate this book
Exterior ballistics is a very mature science. Unfortunately, most shooters have not been able to take full advantage of this field of knowledge because it's always been described in a highly technical language. In this book, author, champion shooter and Ballistician Bryan Litz breaks down the complex science of accuracy into layman's terms that are easy to understand and apply. The objective of each subject matter is to present information to the reader which they can use to hit targets at long range. New for this Third Edition The traditional role of exterior ballistics has been to account for the variables related to bullet flight so accurate fire solutions can be computed. Author Bryan Litz believes that ballistics has more to offer. Weapon Employment Zone (WEZ) analysis is the calculation of hit percentages. New for this third edition, the subject of WEZ analysis is explored and some enlightening topics are presented regarding the effects of environmental uncertainties on your hit percentage, as well as how the ballistic performance of your rifle and bullet affects hit percentage as well. This edition also includes the latest version of the Applied Ballistics Point Mass Solver on CD. Combined with experimentally measured BC's, this program is capable of modeling extremely accurate trajectories as verified in Chapter 8.

This book is absolutely brilliant at explaining complex ideas in simple terms.

"... the Ballistic Coefficient (BC) is the most important number for any kind of meaningful performance analysis including the calculation of accurate trajectories."

"A flat trajectory is an asset to a shooter who has to deal with range uncertainty."

"For any bullet of any caliber, weight, and BC, elevated muzzle velocity will enhance all measures of external ballistic performance."

BC "... is a measure of how well a bullet penetrates the air."

"Danger space is the true measure of merit for a trajectory."

Good bullet sense

For a Hunter who does not plan on taking long range shots, this is worth dipping into,to get a better understanding of what affects a bullets flight to its intended target. This edition comes with it the table of bullets, which is a shame. I did not realise this when I downloaded it, but as the download was free, I can't argue!

A deep dive into ballistics

This is a great book to geek out on ballistics. The information all has references for practical application too; it's not just theory & equations.

Some of the info was way more than I need for my purposes, but I like that it's there if that need arises in the future.

Great read

This book had a lot of information about he ballistics, ins and outs of bullets, and factors that effect them. A host of information and gives you a good understanding of the trajectory of a bullet. Good analogies for a reader to understand.

Wow

Lots of info here. Very good info to make more informed ammo decision. This should help shooters understand long range better.

The quintessential book from one of the most progressive, accomplished ballisticians of our day. He changed the understanding of ballistics, and made it accessible and comprehensible to the masses.

Best reference for long range shooting techniques and methods

Authoritative and very readable exposition of the challenges encountered in long range shooting and the methods and techniques that must be mastered to be successful. It gets a bit repetitious in part 2 and 3 - more so if you have already read Litz's other books. This is definitely a "must read" for the novice long rang shooter.

This is an excellent book for the person interested in a greater understanding of the factors that enter into making an accurate determination of a firing solution for long-range shooting. About the only detraction is that the enclosed ballistics program doesn't run on a Mac, but fortunately they also have an app. I noticed a few typos/grammar errors that appear to be items overlooked during editing, but overall a well-written and nicely-arranged book on the topic of applied ballistics.

A lot of technical data and the best discussion of Ballistic Coeficients I've run across.

Does a great job of explaining rigorous physics lessons in practical and non-technical terminology.
