Worlds collide as the Ashen Twilight House moves west for a new beginning. Aziza Faerie Ariya must choose between her love for Nightwalker Prince Jace Archane and ruling the devastated faerie kingdom. Meanwhile, a group of mysterious hunters begin picking off members of the Ashen Twilight House, forcing them into a truce with their immortal renegade enemies. Is it a trap? Or will it bring a new era of peace?
As darkness continues to loom over the two worlds, Ariya and Jace straddle the thin line between revenge, redemption, and renewal.

Within The Shadow of Mortals starts off immediately right where A Kiss of Ashen Twilight left off. You were left wondering if the Ashen Twilight House had truly been revealed to humans/mortals due to the battle that ensued at the end of the first book..and if it had..what the consequences will now be due to that exposure.
This book took a completely different direction than I thought it was going to...I ABSOLUTELY LOVED it!! The author's writing style has grown just from the first book to the second. The story that she weaved throughout this book kept me glued to the pages and had me sitting at the edge of my seat..I could not put it down!
You ache for Jace and Ariya..their love for each other is very apparent, but there are so many obstacles that keep getting in there way..like the fact that she is an Aziza Fairie who lives during the day, while he is a vampire who lives by night..whether they should live in her world where she is the reigning queen or his world where he is a regent to the House of Blood...and Ariya is constantly struggling and questioning whether or not she will ever be able to live with the violence that is so much a part of Jace's life. However, even with all of that, they just keep holding on and you're right there with them the entire time hoping beyond hope that everything will work out.
All of the secondary characters that were in the first book are front and center in this one and that was something that I didn't expect. I assumed that she would be focusing future books on different characters like a lot of PNRs... but she didn't do that...instead she incorporated their stories right in with Jace and Ariya's, which I would normally think would take away from the main characters but it definitely did NOT. She has written each and every character with such devotion and detail that you're equally as invested in their lives and relationships as you are with the main couple.
The action/suspense and drama have definitely been turned up a notch in this one! The author has such a way with her storytelling that she makes you FEEL their happiness, their love, their fear, and their sadness that it makes you forget that anything else exists beside the world that she's created.
The fact that these books have completely sucked me in and left me wanting for more, to me, is a sign of a great author! Well done Rae Lori!!
My ONLY complaint is that now I will have to wait until 2011 to find out how everything is going to play out in the third and, I've sadly just discovered, final installment to this series.
"Within the Shadows of Mortals" is the second book in Rae Lori's Ashen Twilight Series. Within the Shadows picks right up where her first book “Kiss of Ashen Twilight” leaves off. The Ashen House is moving west to California away from Arizona, after being exposed from their fight with the Elemental Demon. Meanwhile, Jace and Ariya finally wed each other back in Aryia's homeland of Azzia, however unaccepted he may be. The newly married couple caught up in their new union are unaware of what is happening back in the real world until Aryia, has a feeling that something bad is happening. How right she is, mortal hunters are capturing and killing their family and friends! Aryia and Jace are pushed to the limits in this sequel, and their lives will forever change. This book will leave you in eager anticipation for the next book in the “Ashen Twilight Series”, “Inheritance of Ashes.”
I could not stop reading this. It was so amazing. I usually don't give 5 stars for anything because nothing is perfect but I just fell in love with this book.
I waited to long to write the review and now I don't know what I was going to write. lol
Jace and Ariya are indeed together in this book. The books are written from Jace and Ariya's points of view but we also have several other points of view. In the first book, A Kiss of Ashen Twilight, I liked that but wanted more scenes with J and A. In this book, the second, it works very well.
Also, in the first book, the PR world was hidden but near the end it was found out. Now it's really out in this book. And I thought I wouldn't like it (although I'm more of a fan of the PR world being known) but it works.
Ariya is a fierce lady and so are her women warriors.
Poor Jace, what he went through in the hands of his captors was horrible. And I know he's pushing Ariya away, but he has to realize she's there to help him.
I can't wait for the third and sadly, last book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I read this book 1st bc it was lent to me, and so I had to read it. I hate reading books out of order. This is book 2. I liked it and now I need to read book 1.
