I love JB Salbury’s ‘Fighting’ series, so when I saw she had a new book coming out, I made sure to read it. I didn’t know what it was about, I didn’t read the blurb, and I LOVE that I went in blind. I have to recommend that you do, too. This is going to be one of those unforgettable reads for me. It’s been on my mind ever since I’ve read it. It’s got all of the elements to make up a favorite read for me. Emotional- check. Damaged hero- check. Strong heroine- check. Epic love- double check.

This review will be short and sweet, because I’ve read one or two of them (after I finished the book) and they’re loaded with minor spoilers, and I’m telling you now- y’all don’t want those! Even the smaller things in the plot could make the story less impactful IMO. And not knowing whats coming, that's the best part.

Split centers around Lucas and Shyann. Shyann has spent the last 5 years away from home. She was doing the college thing and trying to make it as a reporter. She never thought she’d be back here. But here she is. She’s not in the best place and decides working for her dad to save money and get back on her feet is the best way to move forward. It’s only temporary for her.

Lucas has been working for her father for a few months. He’s a quiet guy and Shyann is, for some reason drawn to him. He’s drawn to her, too, but Lucas won’t let himself get close to anyone. He has his reasons.

Lucas and Shyann. Which did I love more? It’s hard for me to choose. Shyann is fiercely independent, loyal, loving and patient. I thought she was amazing. Then there is Lucas. Beautifully broken Lucas. Hearing stories of his past seriously broke my heart. I don’t want to go into his character much, but know Lucas has a beautiful soul and he’s a complex guy.

This love story is unique, a bit suspenseful, steamy, and truly epic. There were moments it put me through the ringer, but when I finished, my heart was happy. As much as I love Salsbury’s fighting series, this is by far her best work yet. The characters are fantastic and developed, the plot is original and although it’s a tad bit on the dark side at times, the light really does shine through by the end. This book was perfect for a reader like me, and I highly recommend.
“I’m lost to you, Shyann.” I suck her bottom lip into my mouth. “Gone forever.”

Strong heroine, surprising twists, one sweet, shy, fragile, damaged hero and one womanizer, dangerous, bad boy in a same body! Yes, this is my favorite combination!
I should have read this book before! Why did I wait too much? It was really captivating, surprising story with great character development. I really enjoyed that one!

What happens when a guy with split personalities falls in love?

I loved this book!! It was such a intriguing story -- from the moment I heard about it, I knew I wanted to read it and once I started reading, I was hooked! The hero had a multiple personality disorder where, due to his deeply twisted and scarring past, he'd become split into two... one side a gentle caring guy, and the other a fiercely protective but sometimes dangerous guardian. He had no control over when he'd blackout and change to the other guy so, in order to protect those around him, he tried to distance himself from any relationships. Until her. When she showed up, everything changed... and both sides of him faced, for the first time ever, the exhilaration and complications of falling in love! It was a sexy, edgy, and refreshingly unique romance! Definitely a new favorite!

What do you do when you wake up with no memory of what you did last night?

Lucas spent the first half of his life protecting himself from others, but now his own mind is his biggest enemy. He doesn't know what happens when the blackouts overtake him, but he can recall the feelings -- the rage, the confusion, the fear. Thankfully the quiet life he's found has kept the darkness at bay. Until his boss's estranged daughter shows up in town, asking questions she shouldn't and sparking a desire Lucas can't control. Getting close to Shyann is the best thing that's ever happened to him, but when his blackouts return, unleashing the truth he's battled so long to hide, he may just lose her forever...

Shyann was a small town girl with big dreams of making a career in the city. But after an unfortunate workplace mishap, her dreams came crashing down, she reluctantly returned home to try and get back on her feet.

Lucas suffered from blackouts his whole life -- spots of time he didn't remember, in which things happened that he couldn't explain. The only way he knew of to keep the blackouts at bay was to try and stay numb -- no emotions, no connections, nothing that could trigger another one -- so he threw himself into his work and did his best to keep his distance from the world around him. It was his way of protecting both himself and the people around him.

But when his boss' daughter came home from the big city, something in him stirred to life and even though he knew he should stay away, she got through to him in a way no one else had. While for most people, finding this kind of connection would be a welcome gift, for him it was terrifying because their closeness brought on the darkness.

This is exactly why it’s best for her to ignore me. I’m not like other guys and she’s the type that’s probably attracted to friends who’re confident. Safe. Stable.
Every single thing I’m not.

I was so intrigued by Lucas' story -- where was he from, what exactly was his condition, what had happened to him, etc? I wanted to know more and my favorite parts of the story were when we got to learn more about him because quite frankly I was fascinated with his character... or, I should say, characters.

I really loved the way the story unfolded. I don't want to give away too much of the plot so I'll let you discover it on your own when you read the book but one my favorite things about it was that the whole multiple personality thing wasn't really a big 'twist' reveal -- I mean, the title, cover, and blurb pretty much tell you what to expect -- so the focus of the story was more on... what happens when you fall in love with a guy who is two people in one?

“Who is Gage, Lucas?”
His body tenses and he slowly pulls back. His chin is down and he glares at me through heavy-lidded eyes that are on fire with an emotions I can’t name.
A tendril of fear winds its way up my spine, racking my body with an intense shiver. I can’t explain how I know, and it makes no sense, but… “You’re not Lucas,” I whisper.
He shakes his head, slowly, deliberately keeping our gazes locked.
“Where is he?”

The beginning of the story (specifically Shy's perspective) was a little slow to me, but Lucas' perspective was always intriguing to me and once they connected and became entwined with each other's lives, the story really picked up pace and, from that point on, I couldn't put it down!

This is a standalone romance (complete with swoony epilogue!!) told in first person perspective in alternating POVs between Shy, Lucas, and... well, you'll just have to wait to meet the other guy ;) This isn't a dark romance but you should know that there are definitely darker elements to the story -- especially with regards to Lucas' past.

This was such a refreshing book to read! In a world where most romance novels can fit into categories, this one explored a situation that few other books have -- and that instantly drew me to it. I'm so glad I read it and highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a sexy, edgy, and refreshingly unique romance!

Rating: 4.5 stars. Contemporary Adult Romance Standalone.

➦So this was pretty awesome. Also fucked up.

I explain.

➦Imagine you're a dude.

➦I know, I know, but just for the sake of this review...

➦You are kind of on the run but then you settle down in some small ass town where a nice man offers you a steady job. Awesome. Your life is awesome! Right?

➦You can't do any of the normal shit people do. You can't go out with pretteh ladies. Why? Because whenever you feel excited, scared or angry you black out.

➦So the best thing to do is to keep to yourself and hope no one bothers you. Except your boss's daughter takes special interest in you and starts asking a lot of questions. Which make you uncertain, uncomfortable and even angry. There's another slight problem: you kind of got a hard on for her.

➦So at this point if you need to know what to do it might help reading Split by J.B. Salsbury because this sure sounds like a very similar scenario :D

➦I won't bore you long here. It was my first book by this author and it won't be my last. I thought it was a pretty unique story line which I haven't seen in many books before.

➦There were times when I felt very sad and even outraged and sought comfort from my blog buddy Arianna. When I told her that this book is somewhat of a dark read she immediately got a lady boner for it. Bitch's twisted and lives for this shit.

I'm kidding, I'm kidding!

➦So if you like dark-ish read with a twist + misunderstood heros give this one a shot. And I leave you with a cute gif of a dino going puff puff. Just cuz he's cute.

4.5 'Obsession can be dangerous' stars🌟
“You have the ability to break me.” His voice is raw, causing me to sink deeper into his embrace.
“Then we’ll shatter together, because without you I’m not whole.”
The book starts with our female MC Shyann being fired from her job as a reporter. Jobless and broke, she has no choice but to move back to Payson, her hometown and the place she fled more than five years ago after her mother's death. Back home, she meets shy and sensitive Lucas and is intrigued by him.

“You’re impossible to walk away from.”

Lucas, having lived through a terrible trauma, is just trying to live a quiet and peaceful life. He is a deeply damaged man who does not deal well with extreme emotions. His story was really painful and sad, and can I just get my hands on his mother? I want to freaking wring her neck for being such a worthless piece of trash.

I want her to like me. I want her to see me as brave. I want to know what it's like to be normal.

Split is an unforgettable tale of tragedy, survival and unconditional love.

“I don’t want you to feel unsafe with me, Shyann, but I can’t change what I am.”
“What are you?” she whispers.
“I’m split.”

I fell in love with all the characters, and this book made me TEAR UP!!

Even the vile can find acceptance.
There are hearts big enough to love those who are different than them, who are hard to understand.
And I, by some freak accident, found her.
I’ll die before I let her go.

I was completely immersed in the story, and lost myself between the pages. This is not by any means a short book, but I still craved more.

“What’s wrong?”
He blinks down at me. “You told me you love me.” Confusion darkens his gorgeous face.
“That’s because I do love you. And if it’s hard to believe, I’ll just keep telling you every few minutes until it sinks in.”
“That could take a while.” There’s no smile in his voice, no hint of levity, but the weight of seriousness drips off his tone.
“You’re gonna get sick of hearin’ it.”
“Never.”

The next part contains a mild spoiler:-

I've always been fascinated with human psychology and books that deal with mental illnesses really interest me. Lucas suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder or Dissociative Identity Disorder. He has one other personality living within his body: Gage, an aggressive sociopath.

“We’re never letting you go, Shy. This is it. Run, we’ll find you. Hide, we’ll sniff you out. You’ll never be rid of us.”

While Lucas was gentle, sweet and sensitive, Gage was truly an anti-hero. He was filled with so much rage, but was also caring and possessive. At times this felt a little like MMF romance, so I guess it was the best of both worlds!

While the first half of the book made me fall in love with Lucas, Gage stole the show in the final one. ♥️

“We love you, Shy.”
A single tear rolls down her cheek to her parted lips. “I love you guys too.” I grin and a crazed smile stretches across her beautiful face. “We’re quite the fucked up couple, Lucas.”
My smile falls as I study the woman before me, capable of more love than I’ve ever seen and more beautiful than any man deserves, especially us. But we’re keeping her and never letting go. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Visceral, addictive and intense, Split is a roller-coaster ride from start to end. It's definitely one of my favourite books I've read this year, and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read this yet!

“What do you do when you wake up with no memory of what you did last night?”

From the moment I read the synopsis of “Split” I knew it was something I had to delve straight into. It really sounded like the kind of story I would enjoy. Split was a suspenseful, emotional rollercoaster with a tortured hero. It was all those things and so much more. I’m a big fan of J B Salsbury’s “Fighting to Flight” so I couldn’t wait to read her newest book. I had high expectations with this one and I wasn’t let down in the slightest.

Shyann will do absolutely anything to leave her small town after the death of her Mother. Everywhere she turns she is constantly reminded of the pain and suffering her Mother endured and continually fights with her father as a result. Shyann moves away to attend college and is determined to make it in the big city as a big time reporter.

Due to a series of events on live television, she soon finds herself jobless and has no option but to move back in with her family and once again live that small town. She does this so that she can save some money, regroup and once again leave her home town for the big smoke. One of the only things that gets her through this tough time, is knowing the move is only temporary.

“I walked away from the one person who’s reminded me what it’s like to feel again, and Lucas let me go.”

Lucas was such an intriguing character for me and the more I read and learned about him, the more I wanted to know. I just could not get enough of this tortured hero. Lucas has suffered from blackouts his whole life. All he can recalls when he blacks out, are the emotions he feels; the rage, the confusion and the utter despair. Lucas has been working for Shyann’s father for the past few months. As a way of protecting those around him, he likes to keep to himself and doesn’t let others get too close. He’s shy, quiet and mysterious and for reasons neither of them can explain, they are completely drawn to each other.

“I don’t deserve you, but I’m going to keep you.”

I don’t want to say much more in relation to the plot as this book is so amazing and with all the suspense, the twists and the turns, it really should be enjoyed spoiler free. I’ll say it again, this book is amazing. I would most definitely recommend this story to anyone who enjoys complex and intriguing characters and who also enjoy suspenseful, epic love stories. This is unlike anything I have read to date and if you’re looking for something different, definitely give “Split” a go, you won’t regret it. This book was an unforgettable read for me and I know it will stay with me forever.

Review @ Vanilla & Spice Books

The hardest reviews to write are the spoiler-free ones. And trust me, this time it pains me even more so because, ARGH! I so want to talk about this book! I need a support group. I want to chat in detail about all the things that happen, about Lucas and Shy. Head meet desk....

Six years ago Shyann Jennings couldn't leave the town she grew up in fast enough. Everything reminded her of her mother who died of ALS. Six years ago she left her dad, not realizing that he needed her after losing the love of his life. Now she is back in the place she swore never to come back to. After being kicked out of her job as a broadcast news reporter for losing it in front of the camera she doesn't have much choice than to swallow her pride and regroup at home.

Lucas needs his anonymity. His blackouts don't allow close relationships. The closest things to friends are the foreman he works for, Nash Jennings, and his son Cody. When the lost daughter returns he knows he has to keep away from her. His brain however won't shut up. She is all he can think about....but this darkness inside him is dangerous and the last thing he wants is to hurt her.

"If at any time what we have causes you too much stress, you walk away. Okay?"
A humorless laugh bursts from my lips.
"That's the problem, Shy. Don't you get it?"
I dare a touch, reach forward and run a strands of her silky black hair between my fingers.
"I can't. I've tried, and..." I lick my lips and force the words from my mouth no matter how pathetic they make me sound. "You're impossible to walk away from."

Shyann seems tough and sassy but deep down she has a heart of gold. It must be hard to fall in love with somebody who has these kind of mental issues - to me it was amazing how sweet and accepting she was. She wants to help Lucas find peace and when push comes to shove Shyann defends Lucas like a lioness. There is a courage in this woman that borders on recklessness but if she wants to beat Lucas' darkness she has to go above and beyond.

Lucas's soul is stainless. He is a beautiful man, inside and out and the darkness inside him is the thing that makes him seek out solitude - relationships mean jeopardizing his secret and he can't have it exposed. Trust doesn't come easy to him but to watch him fall in love with Shyann is a thing of beauty. He is selfless, sweet and protective. And if I say he is also volatile and ruthless you'll have to believe me, even if it doesn't make much sense right now. Having said that, I am irrevocably in love with the whole package that is Lucas.

"You own me, Shy. Take what's yours. Everything good in me, it's all for you."
"If that's true..." Her forehead drops to mine on a long moan. "Let me have the bad too. I want it all."
I'm panting, holding back the orgasm that's about to blow through my body, but I grin. "Greedy."
"For you? Always."

The sexual chemistry between the main characters was off the charts. It was sweet, tender but also rough and hot.

I can imagine that this is a book that you will either hate or love. Either way, it will make you think and want to discuss the story, the decisions these people make. If you love it, you'll swoon and your heart will be broken. I loved every disturbing minute of it and my heart broke for Lucas and Shy a thousand times over. The main characters were brilliant and even though Shyann and Lucas both had a lot of doubts you could understand why they acted the way they did.

I've promised him honesty and then tucked tail when I should've just talked openly about what I've learned.

JB Salsbury has written a story that I can imagine was tough to plot. I am in awe how well she did it. It's a unique story that definitely requires some out-of-the-box-thinking. Can't wait to read more of this author's works.

”He’s not like other guys…”

I love the premise of this story and for the most part the author did a fine job on the fall of Shyann for Lucas. Lucas is a man with a messed up past and a second personality called Gage. Gage only surfaces when Lucas is trapped in stressful situations.

”People hate what they don’t understand, shun those who are different.”

Shyann returns home after her inappropriate behavior investigating a story as a news reporter. She's ready for the 'I told you so's,' yet she wasn't ready to meet the handsome, sweet, Lucas who was working for her father and brother's small town business. Their attraction is instant though Lucas is skittish and Shyann is intrigued. The more she gets to know Lucas the more she thinks she can help him and have a happy future together.

”I can get the truth from Gage and release Lucas of the pain of not knowing the truth of what happened that day.”

description

The author throws in a current killer situation, a hometown woman’s assault, and of course the big question is if Lucas/Gage is responsible for it all? Once Shyann finds out what happened in Lucas’ past it’s very possible that she’s falling for a killer.

”Can you handle the truth of my life, Shyann?!”

Overall, the story is a solid read though the reveals where just okay and Shyann’s instant acceptance of the Lucas/Gage combo was completely head spinning for me. Still, they found love and acceptance in one another and the story ends on a happy note. I wouldn’t call this a dark read yet the author wrote some truly beautiful quotes.

I somehow forgot that JB Salsbury was the author of the Fighting series, which I absolutely loved. So I went into this as if she was a new author and ended up falling in love with her writing all over again. Her books always manage to keep me intrigued and make me ignore the real world, and this one was no different.

I'll keep this review short because I don't want to spoil anything about the plot, but really all you need to know is that it was an amazing read. Shyann and Lucas were brilliant characters and I applaud JB for being able to write not one, but two characters that had so much story to tell. In most books there's always that one character that takes over the story and is more focused on than the other. But I didn't feel like that happened with these two and I was equally intrigued by them.

Lucas and Shyann both had a lot going on in their lives but that didn't stop them from falling for each other. I loved them together and to see Lucas, who had such a hard time forming connections, be with Shyann in such a protective and loving way made my heart swoon. These weren't your typical romance characters and I think they'll surprise a lot of readers so I hope people will give them a chance.

A lot of things go down in this book and it makes you question almost everything you read. That was the beauty of it, it never allowed me to put it down, and even when real life forced me to, (read: annoying ass cat wouldn't leave me alone until I fed her) I still had Lucas and Shyann on my brain. So bottom line, you need to read this book and if JB is a new author for you then you may want to stock up on all of her books because you'll want to read everything she has ever written.

I was meant for this. To love the unlovable.

If there's one thing I can tell you is that Split is one of the most unconventional and unique romances I've read in a long while. It's not going to a be a book or story I'll soon forget, and that certainly deserves some praise. The writing is engaging, the characters multi layered, and there's enough twists and turns to keep you glued to the book from cover to cover.
What we have isn't conventional, it wouldn't be considered ideal, but it's perfect for us. Because love never discriminates. Even when you're split.

I was riveted to the pages from the very beginning. There's enough mystery worked in to guarantee your kept interest.

Shyann Jennings couldn't leave her small town fast enough to pursue her dream career and to put the pain of her past behind her. Now after her career that she put her blood and sweat and tears into has gone up in spectacular flames and she's back into the small town she ran from to lick her wounds. While she dreads everything about coming home, what she doesn't expect is the quiet, unassuming and beautiful stranger that works for her father and draws her in for a reason she can't understand. Lucas is different from any man she's ever been with. He's shy, quiet, keeps to himself, but yet there's also something beneath the surface that may be much more than meets the eye.
People hate what they don’t understand, shun those who are different.”

While I loved both characters, I have to admit that I never did understand the draw that Shy had towards Lucas. This is especially true when all the secrets came out. While I get the lust and romance, the love was tough to swallow. I had a hard time buying into it. This was more so on Shy's side than Lucas's. I adored Lucas and his character is what kept me turning the pages.
That’s not what I want with her. What I want is to freeze time. I want to record how she feels in my hands, the longing in her eyes, the heat of her breath. I want to slow every single moment with her down so seconds last hours until her touch is branded into my memory.

Ultimately what brought my rating down was the ending. I had a really tough time swallowing all of that. I couldn't wrap my mind around some of the choices the characters made and especially the way they dealt with them. It just wasn't believable. And yes, I get that I'm reading a psychological thriller and fiction, but at the same time, I want some believability in the story and it just wasn't there.

I hated a particular decision that Lucas made but I found a way to look past it. What I couldn't look past was the way Shyann deals with everything. It was just too much.

Would I still recommend this romance? Absolutely. It's unique and original and worth the read for that alone. It could have easily been a 5 star for me if not for that ending. But different folks and all that, and you may not have the same issue with it that I did. So read it and judge for yourself.

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Multiple
Rating:

Shyann Jennings' future in journalism was dimmed before it had the time to shine. After being fired for her fumble, she swallowed her pride and went back to the hometown she wanted to forget. She was determined to get out as soon as she could get on her own feet. But that plan changed when she meet an intriguing new comer.

Lucas was a talented artist, but a socially awkward man. He worked hard and kept to himself all the time. He refused to let anyone in due to his dark and dangerous past. It only a matter of time before it come barreling back and rob him of a possible normal future.

When I first came across this book, I was intrigued by the suspense element. It didn't turn out the way I expected, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

I’m broken. Unstable. Dangerous.

Lucas was not your typical hero that made your heart beats faster. He was meek, polite and a recluse. I didn't care about him but towards the end, he grew on me - and not just because of his dark side.

Shyann is the brightest thing I’ve seen in my life. She’s not mine, but God, I want her.

Shyann was complete opposite of him. She was assertive, opinionated and stubborn. Sometimes she came across as pushy, but I appreciate her strength and determination.

How quickly he swung from being almost mouselike to viper was scary.

This book is classified as romantic suspense, but even before reading it, just by simple observation the suspense element was already taken away from readers. Either it was deliberate or not, it took away the potential surprise. There was another aspect in the book that could have carried it, unfortunately the revelations were predictable and underwhelming.

I do like seeing how the relationship between the two characters evolved. It was nice to see their layers, especially his, getting peeled off to the core. This book is not dark but there were a couple of scenes that encroached the boundary.

Split is a story of a couple facing adversity and accepting who they truly are inside. It would appeal to readers looking for something a little bit more than romance.

5 Suspenseful Stars

**SPOILER FREE REVIEW** < --- I mention that because as I read some reviews, a lot is given away. I’m going to provide a review that gives you my overall impression of the book with a slight summary (only recapping what’s provided already).

I find JB Salsbury books good books to read. I am a fan of her fighter series, but it’s very nice to read something different by her. And Split is very different from what she has usually written, you can already tell from the cover.

Shyann is an ambitious want-to-be TV news reporter, after a bad incident, it comes all crashing down and she has to go back home to save enough money to leave town again. Already I love the set up. I love the Heroine left her small town for five years to pursue her dream to only come back with her tail between her legs.

Shyann is a tough girl. She doesn’t want to go back home and I feel her discomfort, but I also like it because it adds drama to the story. Her father and Shyann don’t have the best relationship and it also brings out the sassy personality she has.

Lucas is the complete opposite of Shyann. He’s quiet, keeps to himself and very shy. He kind of has this lost boy personality and I love it. Don’t you fret, he’s still the alpha hero male we all love to read, but he just has this extra soft side.

So when Shyann meets Lucas she tries really hard to befriend him.

I really enjoyed Lucas’s personality, especially next to Shyann. They are so opposite of each other but it worked really well for the story. This book isn’t about insta-lust, it’s more like who is this person and how can I get them to like me as a friend. I found it very sweet. But don’t worry, there’s steam and it’s hot.

What I really enjoyed about this book is all the feels it gives me. As you read the book you will continually encounter issues and obstacles that just add another dimension to the story. It will leave you gripping the pages and wondering what will happen next and confuse you at the same time, but in a very good way.

Through the whole book I kept on questioning how the author would end it because I simply couldn’t figure it out. It’s not your typical predictable read. Split will put you on a roller-coaster of emotions.

The book is suspenseful and a little dark. Maybe that is why I loved it so much. I felt like Split was written very well and polished. There were many layers to the book and I commend the author on such a complex but stunning read.

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Multiple

"She is the most fascinating person I've ever known, and for the first time in my existence, I've met someone who makes me want to give away everything."

description

Shyann Jennings originally from a small town; after the death of her mother she moved out as far away from her family and town as she could. She was chasing her big dreams of being a TV reporter. However; after a big fall out she found herself back to the place she had run away from.

Lucas was shy, cute, and talented. After a traumatize childhood he was never the same. He moved from town to town; he couldn't stay in the same place for too long. He finally found a town he could call home; found a good job and even meets a gorgeous girl who he fell madly in love with.

"I want her to like me. I want her to see me as brave. I want to know what it's like to be normal."

Shy and Lucas has an insta connection when they first meet. Shy didn't know why she was feeling this magnetic pull towards Lucas but he felt it too. I liked how she felt protective of him and did everything to figure him out when no one cared.

"There's something about him that's impossible to walk away from. Like an injured boy being held captive by his abuser."

I really enjoyed this book, not exactly what I was expecting. I didn't found a lot of suspense or darkness but I did had feels for Lucas I liked that he found his other half in Shy. The story didn't really have any twists like I was expecting but I enjoyed it none the less.

Readers looking for a second chance romance will really enjoy this book.

My heart broke for Lucas. OMG it hurt to read. I just kept thinking that that shite happens in real life and it's incredibly tragic. I wish I could save everyone :(

Okay, so I loved J.B. Salsbury's Fighting series. Those books were all 5 stars for me. So when I saw that she had a new book coming out, grabbing a copy was a no-brainer. But this book was completely different from what I was expecting. Yes, the title and blurb made it obvious what the book was about, but it didn't prepare me for the utter anguish reading this was.

Again, my heart hurt for Lucas. If I could have taken a trip to the past, I would be in prison right now (fictionally, of course).

If only it were really possible. Cuz some murdering needed to be done. Okay, I obviously don't advocate murder, but this is fictional people!

I didn't even care that I couldn't stand the heroine (Shyann). She was such an afterthought for me.

That's how much she really mattered to me. Every time she spoke (at least in the beginning) I cringed, waiting impatiently for the story to switch to Lucas' POV again. Her POV was annoying and unnecessary.

While I enjoyed this book, the ending left a lot to be desired. It's all well and good when characters get their shot at HEA bliss, but not at the expense of leaving unresolved issues. And the biggest issue of all, the whole damn premise of the book, was just left there. Staring me in the face. Not gone. Completely accepted by the cast and crew of the story like it was "ok".

Pretty unacceptable if you ask me.

I loved Lucas. He was such a strong character. He dealt with a lot of abuse as a child (too much if you ask me), lived through a traumatic event (oh man, the freaking trauma), lived to tell about said traumatic event, and was trying to carve a life out for himself. He was sweet, kind, shy, and had a purity of soul that belied the tragedy that was his whole existence. The author did an amazing job of bringing this character to life.

Despite my dissatisfaction with the ending, I honestly enjoyed Lucas. I even liked the whole suspenseful feel of the book and how everything centered around him and his past. The concept of this story was crazy cool and I wonder what else is floating around in this author's head. I can't wait to find out!

Brilliant. F'ing brilliant.

From the prologue to the first pages introducing Shyann and Trevor to meeting Lucas and through the very last word of the epilogue, Ms. Salsbury kept me enthralled. It's been a very long time since I felt fully engulfed in a story, but that's exactly how I felt reading Split.

I felt every feeling—frustration, fear, concern, failure, loathing, rage, acceptance, love . . . especially the love as I read through the pages. The dynamic between Shyann and her family and her return home to Payson was so realistic—who doesn't worry about being seen as a failure, feeling like a failure? And Lucas completely understands where Shyann is coming from—he's fighting his own internal battles regarding fear and loathing.

But the feels . . . ah, the feels . . . and the electric connection between Shyann and Lucas . . . I couldn't get enough of the two of them, read fast enough to know how everything turned out . . . and each and every feeling was worth it to the very last word. ~ Missy, 5 stars

WOW... that is how I was left at the end of this amazing story!! There are so many things I would love to discuss in regards to this heart pounding thriller, yet I will not because I want you to feel all the emotions this story brought out of me.

And for the record, that cover goes PERFECT with this story!!

Watch out, that Prologue had me gasping and needing to know what the heck happened. I knew from that moment that I was about to embark on a roller coaster of emotions that might have me jumping for safety.

Shyann's struggle to fit in made me like her instantly because she knew what it felt like to be different, and that scene with the little girl had me rooting for her. Having to figure out what she would do with her life has her run in with Lucas.

Lucas was a very complex individual, but unlike the rest of us he had a story that would give our pasts a run for our money.

As these two lives intertwine with each other, the chemistry sends such sparks that, try as they may, they are unable to stop.

The emotions this story stirred within me had me cringing, loving and rooting for Lucas & Shyann. And truth be told, I wasn't sure if I would survive until the end but I did.

I have not heard a story like this one and am so glad I did because this is a gem! ~ Kara, 5 stars

Ok, so I didn't like this one at all, it started off well, I really liked the premise of the story, and judging by the title, I had a fair idea of what this story would be about. I have read and enjoyed several books with the same theme, but unfortunately, this one did not grab me or hold my attention in the same way.

Shyann returns to her hometown, after graduating college and being fired from her news presenting job pretty much on the first day, she is feeling embarrassed that she has to come back to her father, knowing he will tell her 'I told you so'. But, Shy is resigned to the fact that she has to work the family business with her dad and brother until she saves up enough to get out of their small town.

Lucas has only been working for Shy's father for two months, he is timid, and keeps himself to himself, but is keeping a secret that could potentially cause everyone to turn on him.

Shy and Lucas begin a relationship but I just wasn't feeling the love, although I did like Lucas at first, it wasn't long before his split personality caused me to dislike him.

The plot twist and storyline was a great one, but the execution just didn't work for me. It was completely unbelievable and not a story that I enjoyed. Also, the ending was lame, I was expecting him to get some help, but they all lived happily ever after as if nothing was wrong. I just didn't get it, sorry to all the Lucas lovers out there, but this book was not my cup of tea.

Let’s talk about book love, because I absolutely loved this book!

So this story starts out with a prologue that is ten years prior and it’s pretty gruesome. I immediately had a WTF moment, because I was legit lost with where this story was going. I don’t typically read blurbs and prefer to go into stories blind, so when I read this prologue I was wondering what I had signed up for.

Then the story introduces us to Shyann a reporter who is just starting out and was on the edge of her big break. The story is initially told from her POV and we see how in a moment her big break turned into an event that broke her. After an on-air incident, she is forced to return home to her father, brother, and the tiny town she couldn’t wait to escape.

We then meet Lucas, he is a laborer and artist working for Shyann’s dad’s construction company. He is quite, mysterious and attractive, but it doesn’t matter because the last thing Shyann needs is a reason to stay in Payson. This stay is a detour for her and she is working as fast as she can to move on again.

So there isn’t much to really say without completely giving away this book and I loved that I went in clueless, so no spoilers here. I will just say these characters completely owned me. I love a broken man and Lucas is the definition of broken. My heart wanted to help him so desperately and the more I read the more I was hooked! Shyann was equally fantastic. She was determined and fierce and I loved seeing her rise above at every turn. She was a fantastic heroine and I loved how she loved.

This is the perfect example of epic love, of love conquering all and I LOVE EPIC LOVE! If you only read a few books this year I recommend this one. It’s a love story of wondrous proportions but also has a mysterious side that leaves you guessing. Split was legit fantastic and a 2016 must read!

THIS is the book you’ve been waiting for. The one that reminds you why you love to read, why you’re addicted to this genre.

I can’t rave enough about this story. It’s an unforgettable tale of tragedy, survival, and deep devotion. I adored every word, fell whole-heartedly in love with every character, and struggled like an addict to leave the last page. I even cried, dammit.

It’s thought-provoking, brave, intelligent, stomach-dipping, and heart-squeezing perfection. There’s darkish content, though not so brutal that it scars. But believe me, it will leave a beautiful mark on your soul. When JB drags you through the despair, she shows you a way out, and my God, did my emotions soar. The ending… Ahhhh, I’m still reeling. BEST conclusion ever.

If you read one book this year, make it this one. I promise you’ll be bewitched, split in two, stitched back together, and spectacularly possessed by these characters.

A sexy addictive suspenseful romance!!!! Split is hands down the best book that JB Salsbury has written. This book had everything that I craved, wanted, and needed. JB Salsbury checked off every requirement that I wanted from her brilliant writing to the raw emotions. Readers like myself will be blown away with all the feels so I urge everyone to read this book blind because the beauty of Split is getting swept away with Salsbury’s brilliant and suspenseful prose.

I honestly don't want to say much because the plot line of Lucas and Shyann is so different from other romantic suspense that I have read. The balance of dark and light was perfectly executed as the outpouring of all the feels gravitated readers to feel the tangible connection. So if you are looking for a story that was visceral, emotionally compelling, intense, and suspenseful then I urge you to read Split. JB Salsbury will hold you hostage with this gripping and original storyline of a broken hero who meets a strong heroine.

WOW!! An intense, sexy and VERY suspenseful romantic thriller with an edge. Lucas is one of the author's most memorable characters ever.

"I wish she knew how much I want to be normal for her."

Read the book description and then dive in to this fast-paced and dramatic story. I really don't want to go into too much detail because spoiler-free is the way to go with this one! Fans of J.B. Salsbury know that she always creates THE most sensitive, damaged and protective heroes, but trust me, Lucas is VERY different from all her other characters.

Lucas is trying to live a quiet and uneventful life, having lived through a terrible trauma. His daily struggles are painful and feel very real. Told in alternating POV's, the book also tells Shyann's story. She has come back home, not exactly willingly, in order to start over again while working for her dad. 'Split' is not what you'd expect from J.B. Salsbury but it is a wonderfully sensitive and VERY sexy story. With tons of suspense!

Lucas is a beautifully damaged soul who deserves a happily ever after. The ending surprised me but it was absolutely perfect for these characters! I LOVED Ms. Salsbury's venture into romantic suspense and can't wait to read more stories like 'Split.'

With thanks to the author for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.

WOW,this book just blew me away!

I don`t think i have ever read a book before where the Hero has a personality split disorder.J.B Salsbury have always written about dark topics in her romance novels and i find her a very talented author.I regret that i didn`t pick this book up sooner because it just changed my life in a awesome way!

The book starts when the very determined Shyann Jennings who just got fired from her job as a reporter and decides to step up in her game to finally succeed in having a career. But first penniless and nowhere to go she returns to her hometown. There she meets her fathers employee, the very artistic gentleman Lucas Menzano. She finds him mysterious when he tries to distance himself, and she can`t help but be intrigued by him.

What a unique plot in a very dark, thrilling and steamy love-story.The chemistry between Lucas and Shy was off the page burning and hot.Shyann is a incredible heroine with a heart of steel.I love how confident and strong she is,and her vulnerability and sense of wanting to belong appealed to me.She stole Lucas heart at first sight, and she also succeeds in stealing the heart of the aggressive sociopath Gage that lives inside Lucas. While Lucas was a nervous, shy, gentle Hero...Gage was a brutal,angry,hate-filled Anti-hero.Lucas soul was so broken and sad that i wanted to cry for him,Gage was the living iside him that protected him from all the death and abuse. This book is so terrific and angsty that i never wanted it to be over.I must read more books by this author,i had forgotten how awesome she is!

I don't think mental illness and violent tendencies should be romanticized, they should be treated by professionals. If a guy tries to kill you, twice, you put him in jail (or a mental institution), and if he has sex with someone else in front of you for the express purpose of hurting your feelings, you leave him, not love him more.
I know the whole "healing a broken man" is a popular thing but I think this book is dangerous. People who have mental problems need help, and they do need love and understanding, but this books makes it sound like love and trust make everything okay. They don't. You don't love a guy who tries to kill you until he has no choice but to start trusting you (and stop trying to kill you). You get him professional help.

This is the second romance I've read where one of the main characters has D.I.D. Unlike the first one, this one doesn't spare the details of abuse that caused the split in the hero. It's disturbing and heartbreaking. By no means is this an easy read, but I have no regrets reading it.

I really did love this book, I stayed enraptured however ... I read another review which called it underwhelming and lacked the suspense it needed, and I agree.

Since you know what's happening, it was kind of predictable. I think it would've been a lot better if we hadn't knows he has a personality disorder. I actually didn't feel much action or suspense here tbh.

What I did like?

Lucas. My god was he book boyfriend material! He is a truly beautiful soul and I connected deeply with him!

Now if you read my reading activity, I couldn't connect with the h to begin with. I felt she was just plain rude. But she does change and I ended up really liking her!

I really liked Gage as well. He was the possessive, protective, more messed up and impulsive, more evil version of Lucas. I liked the development of his relationship with Shyann. I liked that despite hating her he couldn't stop himself from protecting her when needed.

so why not more stars? A thing that Gage did infuriated me. (Spoiler ahead)

When Gage sleeps with OW to push Shyann away. Thing is, if you know me, I hate cheaters!!! But I love Lucas SO much and you 100% know he'd never do that to her. And after the h walks in on them and leaves he kicks the OW out. But still, it was disgusting and I hated him for it. But knowing what this book is about, I never wanted her to leave Lucas. And does Gage realise what he did was wrong? Yes. What I HATED is how forgiving she was!!! I've read other books where this happens, and I have to say this is written in a way where u can tell Gage really truly loves the h. But I wanted him to grovel. Yes they come together in a heart warming scene and he does feel guilt and he apologised. But I would've loved it if she made Gage suffer a bit while only opening up to Lucas. Because after his dick move, I would've been horrified. I hated what he did and I think he should've suffered more. Can authors for ONCE make the heroes suffer a bit after cheating? Not just "I was trying to push you away" "omg I know I forgive you" the end. Hmm no, can we have a strong heroine for once who says "it disgusted me and I need space from you. It's not okay." And for the hero to grovel to get her back. Gage should've grovelled. At the same time I do love Lucas. And so I didn't want her to leave them. But I would've loved to see him grovel more. What he did was nasty.

It was cheating, and ruined the connection I felt between them. It's not okay that this plot device is being used in MOST books nowadays!
1. can't authors be more creative than using a scene where the h hears / or sees the H having sex with someone else? Because it's been having increasingly in every book I read.
2. Why are authors setting a precedent that women should be weak and pushovers and accept the men who supposedly love them if they have sex with OW for the reason to "push the h away". I don't care what your reason is, your disgusting deed is done.

5 THRILLING STARS!

There are hearts big enough to love whose who are different than them, who are hard to understand.

I was meant for this. To love the unlovable.

Split is the newest by JB Salsbury and it is like nothing I have ever read by her. While it may have started a bit slow it did not take long for the tale to take off and for one heck of a psychological thriller with a twisting complex romance to develop!

To write a detailed synopsis would totally be an injustice to this read. Split is the type of book that a reader needs to go into blind. Each page introducing characters and slowly revealing bits and pieces of themselves…each scene creating a tension of sorts…all coming together for a well-developed thrill ride of life and death and perhaps even love. To keep it simple, Shyann Jennings left home 5 years ago in hopes to make it big. Suffocated by her small town roots and the heartbreaking slow death of her momma, she is defeated to come back home with no job and no money. Thrown back into the thriving family business is not what she wants, until she meets a beautifully shy worker whose presence intrigues her. With her inquisitive nature she pushes and prods a quiet man to open up and perhaps look at her the way she is looking at him, but behind that quiet demeanor is a fierce storm brewing created by a horrific past and uncertain present.

Lucas and Shy have an undeniable pull toward one another but there is something, or someone, keeping the push away stronger than the pull. I admit to struggling a bit at first with the two together as a sweet and gentle Lucas seemed to be an odd match for the pushy and driven Shyann. I got a very strong ‘friend' vibe for most of the first half of the book. It didn’t take long for the connection to be seen as more as both were looking to feel something real for the first time in a long time. While it may have built up slowly there was definite steam that bordered possessive ownership and gentle intimacy.

I feel like this is quite vague in terms of a review, but like I previously stated, the twist and horrors at the heart of the story are so important to experience blind. This is quite a departure from the Fighting series by Salsbury. Split is not dark, per se, but it is harsh. Horrors of the past are pure evil and quite difficult to read and they are a terrible reality for Lucas as his nightmares plague him daily to the point that guide the story, so much that it is a constant edge of your seat feeling as to what happens next! Is Lucas brave enough to open himself up to love? Is Shy safe enough to accept the heart she is asking for?

It has been a long time since I have read a book that has had me guessing until the very end. In the midst of suspense, I was so blown away by the beautifully broken love story. with a broken man and an open woman the read was written so well and so extremely unique. I loved the unpredictable nature of the characters and the total “lack of fixing” the situation. I loved that this author created a strong woman who did not shy away from her nightmares and that she was brave enough to take on more than one challenge. In the end the crazy was accepted and love came from a place of understanding and acceptance no matter how “split” the characters were!

Wow! Is kind of hard to talk about this book without giving away the meat of the story, especially the mystery surrounding the hero, Lucas. Is even harder to categorize what exactly does Split falls on. It reads like a contemporary, but have some dark elements that clearly makes me uncomfortable and with a side of suspense and mystery.

Shyann, a young ambitious reporter who plan to take world by storm ended up back in her redneck hometown when her disastrous live reporting cause her to be the blacksheep of the industry. While, admitting defeat to her dad and begging for a job in town, she came across the new quiet guy, Lucas and found him intriguing. But what Shyann found out later about him might just landed her in a whole heap of trouble that might just to be too much for her to handle.

Lucas is our mysterious hero, who on the surface looks like a shy and quiet guy who minded his own business, but had been hiding his own secret past from the towner. If they ever found out what he did and where he came from, they might run him out of town. All Lucas want is peace and quiet and the arrival of his boss's daughter might just disrupt his carefully crafted live here.

I have a soft spot for Lucas, especially knowing his horrible past and his current predicament. He is just so shy around the heroine and a total sweetheart at times. But I have to admit some of the darker element in regard to his past seems way too over the top. I'm used to reading dark books, but this one still manage to make me uncomfortable. I find myself feeling sorry for him more than in lust with him.

Shyann is a tough cookie who resent her hometown because it reminds too much of what she lost, her mother. She was so desperate to make it big out there that she couldn't fathom the idea of staying with her father. But as she gets to know Lucas, she find her resolve to leave wavering. I get that she was intrigued with Lucas, she might even want to help him, but despite my inner romantic, I still feel that Lucas is more trouble than is worth. I admire her tenacity and her love for him, but the author didn't quite manage to make me see what Lucas can offer in return. Also I find that Shyann's reaction towards finding out the truth about Lucas seems under-react. Is that even a term? Anyway, I was expecting more freaked out from her, its only fitting for something that huge.

Overall, Split is definitely not your average read about a sweet, beta hero. Be prepare for some suspense and twist along the way.

4.5 "Trust = Mutual Love" Stars!

Romance lovers looking for a fresh, creative story will fall in love with Split! Please note though that this story deals with some pretty extreme domestic abuse and is sure to tear your heart before giving you the incredibly satisfying and comforting feeling that even the most damaged souls can find their love match, so this story may not be for every romance lover.

A man on the run from the unknown--given his frequent bouts with blackouts--but who believes he has tangled with evil finds his way to the small town of Payson, Arizona where he is finally able to fly under the radar doing construction work and mostly keeping to himself. Enjoying the semblance of normal for the first time in his life, his control slowly begins to be challenged by a woman (Shyann) who he unsuccessfully tries to ignore.

Shyann tried to get away from her small home town of Payson--there are just too many painful memories of her past lingering their--but just when she had started to experience some success, the past blows back in with its strangling hold on her emotions which leads to her losing her job as a budding journalist. Not wanting to return home, but with little prospects for a future job, she returns to Payson until she can find her next gig.

Back at home, she begins working for her father's construction business and meets Lucas. A chance meeting has them sharing a pretty personal moment but yet he seems strangely shut off to exploring if something more is possible. Intrigued Shyann makes it her mission to discover the real Lucas which sets off a whole cataclysmic chain of events. Will the man who has wandered his whole life from town to town trying to find a place to call home, and the woman who has sought to escape hers, finally find solace in each others arms?

All in all, Split is a special story that will give you a glimpse into a world that you may not have been exposed to before. I loved the character development in this tragic and yet uplifting story, and definitely felt myself anxiously awaiting the next page for the resolution of suspense arc, as well as, to determine if the fragile, budding romance could possibly lead to a HEA under this very unusual set of facts.
