I know the rules. I repeat them endlessly in my head. But damn it, I can't stay away. Can't stop thinking about it. About her.
She's perfect. Beautiful. Exceptional in every way. When in the world did she grow up? No! I refuse to touch her. I won't do it. But I did. Just once. And now. I want more. So much more. Once I've set my mind to something, nobody can stop me. Not even him. Screw him. He's just my best friend. She's just his little sister.
Rules are meant to be bent. Broken. Hell, rewritten. How bad can it be?

Let me start by explaining that I had high hopes that this would be a fun, sexy, older brother’s best friend/younger sister love story. From the blurb, I was under the impression that the “brother’s best friend” had decided to pursue the girl that he’d longed for, consequences be damned. But that’s not entirely the exact romantic premise of this story.
Right off the bat, I didn’t care much for either Charlotte or Troy. In fact, I honestly wanted to bang both of their foreheads against the wall to knock some sense into them. The reason they weren’t together in the first place seemed avoidable and archaic, and where the story finds them in the present is…well frankly it’s cringe-worthy.
The story opens with both of them in long term relationships with other people they don’t love or want to commit to. Their inner monologues, thought process, and outright actions were really quite bizarre; I started to question if this was a parody of some sort. Charlotte comes across weak, wishy-washy, and then just a little psycho, showing up like she does. Troy comes across braggy, egotistical, and a real tool. Several paragraphs are devoted to Troy discussing how much his dick likes his current girlfriend—GROSS! As a romance reader, I just don’t need those mental visuals of the H’s privates and another woman even if thankfully it wasn’t depicted in an actual scene. But the final deal breaker in continuing came when Troy announced that he has an STD!!!
The first few lines of the blurb (Off limits. Stay away. Don't even think about it) should really be referring to Troy’s penis! I don’t know in what universe this makes for an attractive hero in a romance novel, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss the memo that it was a desirable quality in this galaxy. I only continued for a few pages beyond that in case it was a joke. *Checks calendar to make sure it’s not April 1st.* I don’t find a ‘romantic hero’ with an STD (or a douchbag personality) sexy or romantic in the least, and I surely couldn’t continue reading and risk reaching a sex scene after that disclosure, especially when he didn’t exactly rush to have it treated. So I had to put down my Kindle at 20%, shaking my head thinking, ‘Dude, stop talking about your dick and touching your dick and go get treatment for it!’
And while I can thankfully say that’s a first in my reading experience, I surely hope it’s also the last. Because one rule that most certainly does not need to be bent or broken or rewritten in the romance market is the one where the hero (or heroine for that matter) is sexually healthy. No glove, no love.
What I loved about the book: The character development, the plotline, scenery description and, of course, Troy & Will's major hotness. There's also an open ending of sorts. A chance to continue the story with different main characters. I loved the author's writing style. Some author's can't make the story run so smoothly. She makes the reader wait for the juicy stuff, but you don't really seem to notice because you're caught up in Troy & Charlotte's story.
What I didn't enjoy so much: Troy in the beginning. Seriously, this dude needed to go find a clown or join a club. He was dark, but also pretty boring. I didn't like how slowly the storyline played out. I liked the story, but I wish the story would've moved a bit faster. The end of the book is sort of rushed.
I enjoyed the book, and I look forward to reading S. Moose books in the future. Hopefully, this isn't a standalone book because I still have SO many unanswered questions. Hint Hint.
It’s the first time I’ve read anything of S. Moose, but this book definitely won’t be my last. I had already bought a couple of her books and now they’re high on my TBR. I liked this book a lot.
Charlotte met Troy when she was young since Troy was Charlotte’s big brother’s best friend. Troy has always teased her, but then one day he sees her differently and falls in love with her. Charlotte feels the same and they kiss. They decide to keep it a secret to Charlotte’s brother Will, but they will tell him after her graduation. For some reason, they don’t tell it to Will and they don’t see each other for a few years. When Charlotte breaks up with her boyfriend, she decides to move to the town where Will and Troy live. She goes to Troy’s house and hopes he still wants her. Troy invites her in, but he can’t start a relationship because she really hurt him. But Charlotte doesn’t give up easily.
I loved Charlotte and Troy. Charlotte is a confident, sassy and smart woman. She really loves Troy and hasn’t stop thinking about him. Troy is a successful business owner. He likes to eat healthy and works out a lot, just like Charlotte. He loves Charlotte a lot, but he was heartbroken when she left without a word. He still wants her, but he keeps pushing her away. He was hot and cold for a long time, and I didn’t really like that. I really loved the book when they couldn’t fight their feelings any longer and started a relationship.
I also loved the secondary characters. Charlotte has great friends. I really loved Carter and Jane, because they were always there for Troy and Charlotte. Jane gave great advice. I liked Will. He was very protective over his little sister. He wants only the best for Charlotte and wants her happy. I was wondering how Will would find out about Charlotte and Troy, and what he would think. I kind of understood why he didn’t want them together, but I did wish Charlotte said something to him sooner. At the end of this book, I hope the author will write a book about Will.

Troy is a man with a dilemma –he is in love with his best friend’s little sister and has been for a number of years. His love hasn’t dimmed in years and continued to grow and get stronger. He had one night of great pleasure when they were together but then they weren’t together afterwards and then for a couple of years they weren’t together. They ended up with other people, dating but never truly happy or satisfied. They were friends but the friendship suffered in a way because Charlotte denied them a chance to be together—all because she felt she owed her brother—read the story and you will understand, it’s a doozy of a reason –the angst and the pain I could feel choked me up and I cried a couple times while reading about the pain the couple was feeling. Oh and the anger, WOW, does Troy have a lot of anger towards Charlotte. Charlotte is seeing her current guy and he ends up asking him to marrying him and she then realizes she is not in love with him and can never be—she is still in love with Troy. She goes back to him, hoping he will be happy to start over but nope, Troy is so far removed from trying with Charlotte. He is ok with some quickies to “satisfy” him. Its more of a move to make her feel bad and make him feel better about himself. Kind of a dick move but it’s all about how he is trying to keep Charlotte out of his heart. I felt so bad for both of the MCs. The pain is there but so is the love. I loved this 2nd chance love story. The emotional, gripping, passionate past of the couple and the present timing of their getting together to revisit actually giving themselves a chance to give their love a chance is a beautiful story which is haunting at times. I love their passionate selves and the bitterness does come thru but the hope also shines. I will admit ,yes I yelled at my kindle for the MC to wise up and get over their anger and their pain of the past ; the ending was so sweet and terrific. I cannot wait to see what the author has next, for I sure will read.
My rating: 4.8 stars ***** *A gifted copy was provided by the author for my honest review*
This was my first S. Moose book. I'd heard from other readers how much they loved her books and I thought I'd give her latest a try.
Charlotte has been in love with Troy, her brother's best friend, since she was a young teenager. When they finally started dating, while they were both at college, they agreed to wait to tell her brother of their relationship until after she graduated. Unfortunately, for these two, Charlotte's brother (who's raised her since their parents died) makes a few comments that cause Charlotte to break the vow she made to Troy.
Fast forward several years, Troy has a thriving business and Charlotte comes running to his aide after breaking up with her boyfriend. Soon, all the hurt and anger falls away and these two pick up where their relationship fell off.
I like angst in my New Adult romances, but this angst was a little too high school~ish for me. Charlotte leaving Troy high and dry in the first place was a sore point for me, but it was made even worse by the fact that Troy just let it happened. You love this woman, yet when she stops talking to you, you let it go? And Charlotte. Troy is the love of her life yet she lets a comment by her brother dictate the course of her life because she thinks she owes it to him? I couldn't get past this. It seemed like a silly reason for this couple to not be together. And let's not mention Charlotte's brother's over-the-top reaction to finding out about the two of the, considering what he had going on. It was all enough for me to get through to the end and be done.
I'm sure others will enjoy this story (and probably already have). But I just couldn't get behind the reason for our hero and heroine splitting up, staying apart and then reconciling later.
I loved Rewriting the Rules. I couldn’t put it down and read into the wee hours of the morning just so I could finish reading Charlotte and Troy’s story. Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, then throw in second chances and you’ve got me. This novel is well-written with fantastically developed characters. I was able to really get into their heads and I liked it. I really wanted to sit with Charlotte and Jane and gab with them. I even got invested in the side characters (please tell me there are going to be more books??). There are feels, I wanted to smack Troy upside the head at times and hug him at others. I giggled at parts. I wanted to shake them all in frustration. But it wasn’t an angsty book for me; the conflict came and went pretty easily in my eyes. It was an easy read, well-paced—it draws you in and keeps you hooked. Will they or won’t they?
3/4 of the book was Troy pushing Charlotte away. The hot and cold act got annoying quick.
When they do finally get together it's all a bit secret again. Just like pretty much all books like this their relationship is outed exactly how you think it will be.
The book felt predictable and took to long for the. To get back together. There was a short thing with an OW but it was cut short and how it was cut short made the whole situation worse for me. I don't like my H/h's with other people after they're introduced or rather in this case getting back together again.
Will was just ridiculously overprotective. She was 23 and lived on her own for 4 years. It seemed like he should have minded his business and accepted the fact that she was no longer his BABY sister and to let go some.
The story follows Charlotte and Troy. I found that Charlotte could be very Juvenile. She leaves her would be financè for maybe a chance. When she hasn't even seen Troy in years. Why would you stay with someone so long, who cares how your brother feels? It's your life.
The fact that Troy suppose to be this good friend and his sister cares about her brother so much but still keeps it a secret. I didn't get it.
I really enjoy a brothers best friend/little sister romance. But i find that it was difficult to connect with any of the characters. I really wanted to feel the intense passion between them. I think it's a good story but maybe it just wasn't for me....Lissa
I just wasn't able to connect with any of the characters. There is very little character development, and I just couldn't see why the MCs loved each other at all - they seemed to just be in lust, and I needed more emotion.
The plot and pacing were okay (though I wished they communicated better with each other her brother) and the writing wasn't bad, it was just missing some key elements for my own enjoyment.

This was my first read by S.Moose and won't be my last. Her writing was amazing and beautiful. This book definitely brought me out of the current book funk I was in
I like the cover but the story was crap. Did the author know that editors exist? I don't think so. I can't count the huge amount of logical mistakes, repeats etc. Really disappointing.
Oh my stars I loved, loved this book! S. Moose created such wonderful characters and a great storyline! She wrote with such emotion and feeling that I literally got so caught up in this story I lost track of time! I read this in one sitting and loved every single minute! Charlotte was the beautiful, smart, young woman. That being said, she made a lot of horrible choices during this book. I would have liked it a little better if she had grown a backbone and stood up to her overbearing brother. She was the 23 year old woman, smart, educated and capable of making her own decisions. Troy was this intimidating, surly beast of a man and he wasn't exactly happy to see Charlotte. I loved how Charlotte was able to slowly chip away at Troy's shell and bring that amazing, loving man out. Seeing these two work through their issues and face everything together was another part I loved! This was a great love story and second chances!
I liked this story. It felt repetitive at times with the dual POV. He would describe something in his chapter and then she would do the same in her chapter. There was phrases that were constantly being repeated throughout the book, got a little annoying. There was one word that killed certain scenes, literally making me cringe.
Troy and Charlotte have been in love with each since they were teenagers, now they have a second chance at love but they allow Charlotte's brother, Troy's best friend, stand in their way to happiness. I like the characters and the story was good.
3.5 Stars! I thought this was a cute read. This is my first time reading from this author so I didn't know what to expect going in. The blurb certainly caught my attention so I dove in.
This was a good story line. Great set of characters. It just didn't touch me emotionally. I didn't get that all consuming love feels I was hoping to get from this second chance romance. Overall, I enjoyed Charlotte and Troy's journey.
What a roller coaster ride His name is Troy Hastings and he has known Will and Charlotte Maxy their entire lives. Will was the Best friend Charlotte was the annoying little sister. Until she wasn't. Bro code or not.....This is a great read
I would love to know who it was that invented or came up with this whole bro-code gibberish, the whole sisters are off limits scenario that it is just so pointless, when have you ever known a man to do as he is told! Really!!! Life stood in their way and tore them apart when they were just teenagers but could Charlotte and Troy try again or had too much happened in the interim? The young and naïve Charlotte had longed for and loved her brother Will’s best friend Troy for years but when family tragedy struck, her life and Troy’s were never going to be the same again because despite their commitment that after college everything would be as they planned, life had other ideas and when her brother almost railroads her into a relationship with a guy she really doesn’t want to be with, I was beginning to wonder if this was the book for me. But she found her inter steel and when Shawn intimated that he was ready to settle down, she did exactly the opposite and took off! She only had one place left to turn, one man she hoped she could rely upon and the pair of arms that she had dreamed of and that she knows without a doubt that she will be safe in…Troy’s. But Troy isn’t the man she once knew, he has closed himself off in many respects and I have to say that I actually found his attitude really hard to get a handle on, it was as if he had forgotten the part he played in their relationship coming to an end, he didn’t seem to want to acknowledge that while she had left she really didn’t have much of a choice as it was with her brother and Troy didn’t exactly go hunting either of them down! His attitude was harsh, I got that she had hurt him but was it all on her? He poured all his anger and blame onto her. Justified or not, I was ready to swing for him! Had they really come to this after all these years, did what they once had count for nothing or would the love that they shared all that time ago be able to bring them back from the brink of disaster, could they see past the pain and give their hearts the chance to heal? It takes the most almighty melt down for the two of them to finally get it all out in the open and to address the way they are feeling, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that one, it had been a long time coming but it was just what they needed in order to clear the air and to kick start a future that up until that point, I want actually sure they were going to be able to have. Sometimes Charlotte was too nice for her own good, if she wanted Troy she needed to meet him half way and his road was far from all sunshine and flowers, he lived clouded by shadows of his own making but he was happy there, could she force him to face the future that they could have together? There were some sound secondary characters that I would like to have heard a little more from but you never know, the author might have plans for them, and I hope so. A solid second chances romance, with a little bit of the bro/best friend drama thrown it. Very well written and engagingly entertaining. Does the book live up to its title and has it rewritten the rules, well I think in this occasion yes, because it gave due diligence to the emotional angst that both Charlotte and Troy were experiencing and showed clearly that when it comes to affairs of the heart, the rule book is null and void!!!
When I received an ARC for Rewriting the Rules, I was excited. I'd never read any of S. Moose's work and the book looked and sounded fantastic! It's a forbidden romance, which I love! I wasn't wrong to be excited. There was so much in this book that I loved and enjoyed. It was sweet, sexy and heartbreaking at the same time.
Troy is the best friend of Will. Charlotte's big brother, her protector. Troy has sworn off ever settling down with a woman. He isn't your typical run through every woman, slam bam leave em kinda guy though. He's honest and loyal. He writes his own rules when it comes to relationships. Troy stays in meaningless relationships, not having feelings for any of the girls even if they fall head over heels for them.
"I have rules and a code I live by. This way of life is what keeps me from getting hurt. A broken heart is a b**ch to deal with."
Charlotte is a sexy, smart, independent girl. Her only downfall, her brother. She lets him dictate her life in the way of, she doesn't want to disappoint him so she'll do whatever he thinks she should be doing…..including staying with a man she doesn't love. Why? Because Will gave up a lot for her, in order for her to have a good life.
I absolutely adored the banter between Charlotte and her friends, Jessica and Aubree. It had me laughing at times which was a much needed relief from some of the other things going on in the book!
Troy and Charlotte's story will take you on an emotional ride. When Charlotte breezes into town without telling anyone she's coming, Troy is thrown for a loop! He doesn't know what to do or how to act. He doesn't want to let Charlotte get close, doesn't want to let her back in. He keeps his walls high and his heart guarded.
"I'm a different person. I'm a man; a cold man, with no desire to have a happily ever after with her. Love doesn't exist. Not even with Charlotte."
This story will take you on a whirlwind of a ride. You know they want each other, but they're scared, both for the same reasons, but neither one knows it. Rewriting the Rules is a sweet, loving story that will leave you wanting more. I enjoyed reading this, turning page after page to see what S. Moose would have happen next. I truly enjoyed being in Charlotte and Troys world and I was rooting for them 100% the whole time! I wanted to reach in the book and shake them both! I wanted to yell at them to JUST TALK IT OUT ALREADY!....but of course if it just happens like that there wouldn't be a story would there? ….and I'm so glad there was one! I can't wait to see what S. Moose delivers next! (I'm secretly hoping for Will's story ehem..)
"Love is like air. We know it's there, and we know we need it. Some of us need to go through hell to realize what's been in front of us for so long."
I was kindly provided with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book definitely should have been one that I loved as it covers a second chance romance with the added twist of it being an off limits romance between a girl and her brother's best friend. However, I struggled with certain parts of the book and at times found it difficult to keep interested.
Charlotte and Will are brother and sister that are extremely close and look out for one another. Will gave up on pursuing his own dreams so that he could be close by and look after Charlotte after their parents die when they are both still teenagers. Will's best friend Troy is also protective of Charlotte and is there for her after her parents death. It doesn't take long before they become quite a close trio and whenever Will had something to do such as play football Troy was always there for Charlotte and this led to them spending lots of time together and of course over time their feelings developed into more than just friendship. Keeping it from Will as he has strong opinions on who is good enough for his sister leading Charlotte and Troy to decide to wait and tell Will when Charlotte graduates from school. Of course things happen and this promise of being together and then telling Will doesn't happen and Charlotte dates someone else.
Fast forward a few years and Charlotte and Troy are brought back together and she is determined to get her man this time round regardless of Will. I was fine with the story so far and was keen to see how it would play out but ended up being quite frustrated with what happened. I understood that things would be in secret and there would still be the issue of Will but there was so much back and forth that I was fed up with for the most part. I knew that there would be some back and forth but unfortunately I felt that this was repeated too much.
Troy as the male lead in the story is actually quite a good character and I did feel that he was portrayed quite well but I can't say I felt the same about Charlotte however. Unfortunately for me she came across as quite annoying and selfish at bits. It's quite difficult to pinpoint exactly where she annoyed me most but overall I just didn't take to her as the female lead.
The book was good for the most part and I wouldn't mind reading about some of the others in the book such as Will but I just didn't take to Charlotte and Troy's story as much as I hoped I would. I will still read more from S. Moose as there are just some characters that don't work for you personally and I think that this was what happened for me here.
Title: Rewriting the Rules Author: S. Moose Reviewer: Keri Tabor Release Date: March 18, 2016 Genre(s): M/F, Romance, Off Limits Page Count: 223 Heat Level: 3 flames out of 5 Rating: 4 stars out of 5
Review: ** FOUR STARS ** “ She’s my person. I love her, man. We’ve been in love with each other since she was sixteen and I never acted on it.” What happens when you call out the wrong mans name during a marriage proposal? Well according to Charlotte, you pack up your life and you move to where you left your heart four years ago. Troy has been living his life but never really feeling whole. His heart walked out of his life four years ago and never looked back. When Charlotte returns and vows that she will win Troy back, she doesn’t make excuses and goes for what she wants, but does Troy want to risk it all again for fear she will leave. Not to mention they still have the same issue they had 4 years ago! Her brother, his best friend. He does not want these two together. Can these two continue this cat and mouse thing they have going on or will they finally be found out and have it all out in the open. While I liked the book I felt like there could have been so much more. It was a quick read and the characters were developed. I just felt like it was missing something, and I can’t name what it was. I do hope that Will gets his own story! Sign me up for that one, I think he will make it interesting!

Great cover - love this author and I am always happy and eager to read her work. I am saying 3.5-4 stars BUT I am excited it ended in a way that we may move on with other characters ?? PLEASE - I am so curious about Will and the things that we found out at the end of this story. No doubt these guys are a hot group of fun and I love the dynamic of friends/family and the nature of Will and Troy's jobs.
I am a sucker for the second chance romance or childhood friends to lovers or even the secret love kept from over protective brothers !! This story has all of those aspects and even a few more. Charlotte is unhappy in her relationship - she is with the SAFE guy her brother approved of. For years she has pined away for Troy - her brothers BFF and someone who she has been in love with for years. They promised each other after she finished college they would finally be honest with Will and find their happiness. Yet here we are years later and that has yet to happen. Charlotte makes a huge decision and heads home her brother and Troy for comfort and a new start. After years without Charlotte we find that Troy , although successful in his life, is still in love with Charlotte yet has been heartbroken and jaded against love since she left. His current girlfriend of a couple years has recently given him a surprise that not only seals their fate but sets the wheels in motion for the Charlotte and Troy games to begin. This is definitely an angsty filled story , maybe slightly immature and I think I needed more of their past so I could have a better connection with what it was they wanted to get back. The chemistry and tension between C and T is amazing I do love reading about them finding their way back. Will is kind of a downer yet I almost wanted more from his realization, it took so long for that to come about I was expecting more !! Being that I had an ARC I am unsure if any of this changed for the final copy but I also would have liked some time span headings , some of the scenes seemed to end and when new one started I didn't know if it was hours or maybe days later ?? All in all I did enjoy the story. I always love the sneaking around even though it makes me sick waiting for the other shoe to drop !! Every sneak of a touch and I am on the edge of my seat - I guess I love the torture of it all. Thanks for the chance to read Rewriting !!
Looking for a great story that is part friends to lovers and part second chance romance? Look no further than S Moose's Rewriting the Rules.
S Moose gives us a quick read here that manages to be both sweet and sexy. *Sigh* Charlotte and Troy. In love since they were teens and she was 'too young.' And then throw in that extra little issue - you know the one, she is his best friends little sister! I hear ya, why should that be such a big deal right? (AHHH... you know I hate divulging too much of the story - I like you all to read and discover details like I did.) Let's just say that the way they are all there for each other does make it a tad bit stickier than your normal BF's sister deal. Otherwise I would have been a lil' annoyed too. But here both Troy and Charlotte have their own reasons for being gun shy. And I get them. So they have made a decision to wait to let her brother know about their feelings. But as tends to happen that damn thing called LIFE rears its head and interferes with their plans. Well that and Charlotte's need to please her brother.
Needless to say Charlotte and Troy don't end up together, but contrary to what both may think neither of them has been far from the other's mind. Now years have passed and circumstances have changed and Charlotte is back in Will (her brother) and Troy's lives. What does this mean for Charlotte and Troy? Can they pick up where they left off? Now don't be silly that would be too simple! What I truly appreciate about S Moose is that her characters need to work for it. Things don't just fall into place with a snap of the fingers. They need to put in the time and effort to rebuild what has been lost. To find their way back to one another.
Book Bonus: If you are a fan of S Moose and have read her other books (and let me just say, if you haven't - what on earth are you waiting for? I LOVE HER BOOKS!) be on the lookout for some cameo appearances from some favorite characters from other books. I may have squealed and done a little dance when I saw this. It was done COMPLETELY tastefully and subtly. But the little connections were exciting and give you a teeny tiny glimpse into some beloved characters lives right now! EEEK!
I received a complimentary copy of Rewriting the Rules in exchange for my honest review.
I was kindly provived an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review, so I tried, I really tried but I’m so sorry to say that this wasn’t for me. The blurb intrigued me but once I got to the actual thing I found it confusing, and I had to force myself to keep reading.
“God,” I wishper. “Why can’t I forget about you? Let me forget,”
Charlotte is a confident girl, she knows her worth and I loved that but then she can’t stand to disappoint her brother, Will, and still I’m ok with that; but then she’s been in a long relationship with a guy who loves her only because her brother likes the guy (???). Ok, I can even get past that but then in comes Troy, Will’s best friend, and apparently the love of Charlotte’s life. Where apparently is a key word since we only get a little glimps at their past together, and we don’t get to see how they fell in love. Even in the present, she finally decides to go after what she really wants and be with the only man she loves (although, she kind of gives up at the first rejection). Troy conveniently breaks up with his girlfriend on the day Charlotte shows up. Even if he was in a long relationship too, Troy hasn’t believed in love since Charlotte broke his heart; so now he doesn’t want to give in to his attraction to Charlotte. They keep pulling and pushing each other in a way that wasn’t interesting for me, but rather annoying. I couldn’t find it in me to care about either of them or whether they ended up together.
Life isn’t a fairy tale. I can’t expect love to happen in an instant or a blissful reunion.
I found both Charlotte and Troy’s inner monologues to be repetitive and confusing, because they both thought one thing and two lines after that they thought the opposite. I kept hoping that it would get better, but then they both give in suddendly, and even if they’d always been in love with each other it felt like insta-love. Definitely not my cup of tea.
I'm a sucker for a good second chance at love story, and this one fit the bill. I will say that at the start of the book, I liked both of viewpoints of Charlotte and Troy; I can understand why Charlotte made that decision, and please, with the phone call that Troy got? He handled better than I would have.
But....by the time I got to the end of chapter 3? Charlotte annoyed the ever-lovin' hell out of me; I honestly did not understand why she thought it would be a cake walk to pick up again with Troy after all the time that they weren't together. And then she seemed to be confused as to why he was acting the way he was acting. I seriously wanted to shake the crap out of her.
I began to sympathize with Charlotte when it came to Troy and his hot and cold attitude. The story began to change for me when Charlotte decided to make an even bigger change in regards to dating; just reading that portion of the book had me trying not to laugh too loudly in public.
One aspect I didn't like was Charlotte's brother Will; I get that is was just them for a few years after the untimely deaths of their parents, but he took being overprotective to stratospheric levels. And his reaction to Charlotte and Troy being together was over the top. At the same time, I did wonder why Charlotte had such a hard time standing up to her brother, she's supposed to be a grown woman for goodness sake. I understand being grateful that your brother made sacrifices, but those were his choices to make and she shouldn't have felt guilty for wanting to live life for her, not for what she thought her brother expected.
At the very least there is a HEA, and I'm hoping that we'll get a story about Will and Charlotte's co-worker Aubree, because there's definitely a story with those two.
This is a second-chance love story between Charlotte and Troy who fell in love in high school. They decide to wait until after Charlotte graduates from college to let everyone know of their relationship because they are afraid to upset Charlotte's brother, Will, who also happens to be Troy's best friend. Things happen while Charlotte is in college that cause the lovers to part ways and Troy is left broken hearted.
Fast forward a few years later and Charlotte decides that Troy is her true love and she sets out to reclaim him. However, Troy resolves that he will never be broken hearted ever again, has sworn off on love and now only gets involved in relationships for the physical companionship. He is quite wary of Charlotte when she seeks him out. She definitely has her work cut out for her trying to convince him to give their relationship another chance. Plus, there's still the initial obstacle of her brother's probable objection to them being together.
I love a second-chance romance but I feel like there were some missed opportunities in this book. The reason Charlotte and Troy "break up" seemed to be glossed over. Had more detail been put into it could have created some really dramatic tension and given more insight into the characters' heartbreak and grieving for the relationship. I also didn't connect to the characters very strongly. I would have liked more dialogue in the glimpses we saw of their past and even the current interactions. To me dialogue and banter is important to seeing the connection and intimacy of a relationship.
Overall this was book was pretty good but it just missed the mark for me a little bit. There were some secondary characters that intrigued me and I am hoping to see a book for them in the future.
An ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Rewriting the Rules is the newest novel by S. Moose and focuses on the romantic tangles of Charlotte and Troy. Can two first loves find their way back to each other after years of pain and misunderstanding?
What I Loved: S. Moose created an interesting world of young adults struggling to make that full transition to adult life - building careers, transitioning from easy and fun physical relationships to wanting to have someone to really share your life with. The story is sweet and readers get a desired HEA.
What I Didn't Love: I really struggled with the connection between Charlotte and Troy. Both characters present their initial separation as devastating and life altering, yet when reconnected they constantly run hot and cold. I think there were several missed opportunities to dig into their past and build on fears of making a real future together. If a story is going to be heavy in the angst I need there to be real causes for the pain, I didn't get that from Rewriting the Rules.

"When a woman knows her worth, and knows what she wants, then to me, she's what I want."
"He's my home. He's my person. Love isn't deceitful and shouldn't make you cry. Love doesn't come from toxicity. it's pure and true. It's simply love."
"Love is like the air. We know it's there, and we know we need it. Some of us need to go through hell to realize what's been in front of us for so long."
Though it was a bit bumpy and not necessarily my cup of tea, fans of second chance romance may enjoy Rewriting the Rules.
