Dana fled her pack and their laws to live on her terms, but the price of defiance was her happiness. Pack law states Lycan females must be shared by two or more males, but young and in love, Dana flees rather than be forced into a ménage. Her life on the run, constantly on guard, leaves no room for happiness–or love. When her past catches up and returns her to the home she fled, she finds herself reevaluating her beliefs. To her surprise, she discovers her body and inner wolf want to claim three males.
Could it be that now older and wiser, she can accept the Lycan polyamorous way of life? Or will jealousy and fear send her running again?
Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .
I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.
Defying Pack Law is book one in the Pack series by Eve Langlais. I have only read a couple of Eve’s books in the past but loved them. When I saw this series I couldn’t resist. It hits on several of my favorite genres and at the same time gives me a chance to explore more of her books. Wow, I loved it, loved it, loved it!
Dana and Nathan are in love. Just entering into adulthood they pledge themselves to each other. They are shape shifters, werewolves. In their pack, full blooded females are rare so they are forced to take more than one mate, to encourage more offspring. Most of these matings turn out as loving family units. But not Dana’s. She watched her mother suffer at the hands of her evil father and she has vowed that she will never suffer as her mother did. So when Nathan tells her that they must follow pack law and he will share her with other mates, she refuses and she runs.
“How can I be lonely when paranoia is my constant companion.”
Now, twelve years later, Dana has spent her life on the run. She can never let her guard down, never completely relax. She always has to have an escape route planned in case she needs to get out fast. You see, a lone unmated female is never really safe. Her luck finally runs out and she finds herself in a hopeless situation, one where death would be the better alternative, when she is rescued by the man she ran from twelve years ago.
Along with Nathan are his two packmates and closest friends, John and Kody. For twelve years Dana has felt nothing towards any male. Even though she ran she still loved Nathan. But as soon as she was in a room with John and Kody, she felt a pull, a longing, among other things. These are feelings she wasn’t accustomed to. Could she actually be attracted to all three of these men? Her wolf sure seems to think so!
“I was living a perfectly fine life. I made my own decisions, did what I wanted. I was free.” John snorted. “You call that freedom? I saw your house with its alarms and lack of personal touches. It looked like a prison to me, one built on paranoia and fear.”
Nathan was now the alpha of their pack. I have to say that I didn’t care for him as much as the others. It was obvious why he was alpha. He was tough. But after searching for Dana for so many years, he didn’t deal very well with her and all her new found feelings. He really mucked things up. Now John is another story. I think I fell in love with him some myself. He was the doctor of the bunch. He was the stable one, calm, loving and understanding. Then Kody who was the youngest, was the happy go lucky swoony flirt. Together, though, these three were the perfect combination, tough guy, softy and silly. But twelve years ago, the thought of sharing herself with anyone other than Nathan made her run. Can she really be a mate to three men now? Is it what she really wants?
I loved this book. It was oh so sexy. Dana was so young when she ran but let me tell you, it didn’t stop her at all from enjoying these sexy shifters now. The sexy times are hotter than hot. But there are plenty of sweet moments as well. My one complaint is like I said before, Nathan kind of ticked me off. But John, swoon, made up for it. I love reading a new and different take on pack life and can’t wait to continue this series with book two, Betraying the Pack. So what could be a better combination that a shifter, menage book? If these are two genres that you enjoy, you definitely should give this series a try.
This is a hard book for me to rate. I read it initially because of a one star review that made me curious, and now that I’m finished I’m vacillating over my feelings about this story. There were parts of this story that I loved almost as much as the parts that I disliked. Unfortunately, the bad parts outweighed the good for me. Nevertheless, I could see a reader going either way with this book.
What I did not like about this book:
1. The pack dynamic between men and women: It was frustrating to read how female werewolves in the pack were treated like walking wombs, good for nothing except sex and birthing babies. I understand there was a shortage of females in the pack, but I can’t believe any society would condone sharing women. And it’s not just the fact that they share the women—because truthfully, if everyone was consenting I wouldn’t care—but the fact that women were taken against their will. In my book that’s rape and I don’t enjoy reading about rape.
Thankfully, the heroes in this story did not behave in such a way, which is why I liked them. However, they all knew that Dana’s mother was being forced to have sex with all of her husband’s friends and no one did anything to stop it. Then we find out she was beaten to death by her husband and he wasn’t ever punished. Even though the story is a paranormal and outside reality, in this instance it was too unrealistic. A pack that acts like family would not turn their backs on a member in such a cruel way.
2. Dana was a likeable character for me at first. She was tough and defied pack law because she chose not to be abused like her mother. She survived on her own for over a decade and fought and killed multiple werewolves who tried to forcibly claim her. Then, near the end of the story when the man she loves actually does mate her—AGAINST HER WILL—she forgives him instantly because it was her fault. What? Not only was that out of character for her, it was just plain wrong. Since when is it okay for a victim to blame themselves?
3. Also, the situation with the rogues and Nathan’s father is never really resolved.
What I did like about this book:
1. The story kept me engaged from start to finish. I was not bored and I finished the book in an afternoon. The back story and character development was good and I really liked all of the characters… initially. Still, most of that fell apart in the last bit of the book
2. The sex scenes were hot, and emotionally charged.
Overall, I don’t regret reading the story and I definitely enjoyed parts of it. However, I have already deleted this book from my reader and I know I will never reread it, and most likely wouldn’t be too enthused to pick up the next in the series.
Omg! I am astonished! Defining Pack Law is a novel to howl about. When I started reading I couldn’t stop, I even got mad because I had to stop and fix dinner LOL. Eve Langlais adds a lot of emotions and depth to this wolf tale. I laughed, loved and even cried and that last one is hard for me;-) These three men are awesome. Why? For one Eve writes each male with their own personalities, so they are all are easy to fall for. I simply loved Dana she is sassy, witty, very loving and forgiving. The way Eve brings about these four coupling is an exciting adventure and the sexual build between them is very hot. Now, for the sex with this being a ménage story you get *fanning self* hot sex including anal, there’s no m/m.
If you’re a Ménage reader DON’T miss this story, especially if you love some hot demanding male wolfs, that will keep their mate save no matter the cost. I did mention that this is a novel around 151pgs, so those of you who doesn’t like the novellas here’s your chance to try one of Eve’s novel eBooks and I highly recommend this one.
Teaser The pup barely waited until they’d left the office to announce his intention. “I claim you.” “Not likely,” she snorted. “You can’t do that. You’re unmarked, making you free game to the first male who claims you. Pack law says so.” Dana whirled and, in a flash, pinned the annoying pup against the wall with a forearm across his throat. “Listen here, little boy. I don’t want to be claimed and really don’t give a shit what pack law says. In case you hadn’t noticed, I chose to live outside of one. If you want to live, I’d suggest you forget about trying to claim me. I’ve taken down much bigger wolves than you.”
I was enjoying this book up to the point where Dana lost her freaking mind and started with the whole... He did something wrong, but it's okay because it was my fault. I wanted to throw my iPad across the room or at someone! She went from this strong woman to this person that just... well, I'm not sure what the hell happened. It just turned me off... So the answer is that Nathan runs away -- hello, you're pack alpha, IDIOT, you can't just run away! That was just... silly. And HOW did Dana outrun everyone to shows up to the fight? UGH! It's like the last quarter of this book doesn't match the rest of the story and everyone lost their freaking minds!
Still... I love, love, LOVED John and I could take a Kody any day -- he was just so much fun. If it wasn't for those two and the great sex... I think I would have liked this book a lot less.
All I want is a decent paranormal menage read but apparently that's too much to ask lmao:
1) Nathan is a self-entitled asshole, period. I don't give a fuck about his excuses or the fucking pack laws; dude can go off himself
2) Dana is my girl until she goes blaming herself for Nathan's possessive tendencies and the fact that he cannot keep his wandering dick in his pants all these twelve years (WHICH HE FUCKING BLAMED HER FOR) no bb it's not on you you've done nothing wrong-
3) -and then she took Nathan back after he basically raped her no nope nah bb
4) Nathan can go fuck himself, tbh
5) I really hate Nathan
6) this book should end with Dana and John driving into the sunset together with Kody the golden lab
7) the whole vampire-werewolf thing is a bit weird and out of nowhere
8) did I mention I hate Nathan
9) I enjoyed Kody's character but he has literally no chemistry with the other bros I don't understand why he's around tbh he existed just for laughs and sex
Werewolves are my secret fetish, something about them that calls to me and therefore really wanted to like this book as it had not one but four werewolves, all hot and happening!! However, my bad that the story just did not click with me.
The book started off really well with Dana, the female MC of the story, running away from the Pack because she disliked being shared, which incidentally was Pack law. Loved her spirit in how she lives for 12 years alone and away from the Pack, becomes strong and faces the world, albeit with some paranoia.
Enter a pup (sigh can't help it, as that is what they call the young ones in these books) and life goes awry for Dana, who is again on the run. The bad guys catch up with her, truss her up, but she still fights - so the book is still going strong for me. However, now enter the good guys.. Nathan and his friends and this is where it all started going downhill for me.
Nathan was the guy she loved but left 12 years ago, as he was reluctant to defy Pack Law while she wanted to! On getting back, thankfully, she does not really go back into his arms but fights him - another good thing. However, damn her female hormones, she gets attracted to his friends :O :O :( .. I mean come on.. for someone who was so adamant against this aspect, she actually invokes the same Law that she ran away from, just to spite Nathan?? Are you serious girl?
Story moves on to encompass how she feels about the other two.. I can understand hormones but I don't get this should I, shouldn't I stuff that these heroines seem to go through in such books. Why can't they simply decide and stick to it! Of course, it could be because menage is simply not my thing and I don't agree to it but still even in a fantasy book, can't it be realistic? Anyway, she falls for the other two, ends up mating one of them before Nathan and that drives Nathan berserk.. And what does this Pack Alpha do?? Well, sorry to ruin it for you but he runs away... Come on you IDIOT.. you are the PACK ALPHA.. therefore rules say that YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY.. and not for something stupid like this!!! Sheesh.. will these people ever get their act together??
Anyway, Dana follows him, feeling all guilty (Why?? I don't know, as she has always said that she wants to make the choice and she did it.. so why feel guilty???).. So she follows and gets him back and they live HEA!!! That's the end...
I wanted to give it a one star but refrained because, there are some parts where the exchanges between Dana and her guys are actually funny and nice. Also I loved the way the author tried to give Dana some spirit, at least initially. Would have loved it more, if there had been some more fights before the final capitulation.. however, it was all crazy - should I, shouldn't I stuff, which made me get bored and totally lose respect for all those concerned.
John was the only guy who made sense in this story and he is the reason why it is a tolerable read. Kody was too breezy for my liking and actually never played a role beyond the sex, which was sad as his character seemed like fun. Nathan and Dana could have been a real fun couple but the author seemed to drag them down with their baggage, something I could understand but only to a certain extent.
Nevertheless, if you like werewolves and don't mind menages, this is an okay read that you can breeze through without being too troubled. However, if you do miss it, it is not as if you have missed anything great.
My rating.....5 Stars!!!...to "Defying The Pack" Pack #1 by author Eve Langlais.....
Wow I am so glad I came across this series. It's sexy, sensual, dark and packed with suspense. The author blended all these elements perfectly. These shifters are seriously hot, hot, hot!
So pack law states that Lycan females must be shared by two or more males. Come on, how tragic! What normal female would want to be forced to share her body with two or more men instead of just one? Okay so I am not normal :) :) :)
As soon as she found the opportunity, Dana ran away from her pack, their ridiculous rules and the man she loved. Dana refused to listen to pack nonsense. She didn't want to be with more than one man so she fled the safety of her pack and took her chances in the human world. But over a decade later her past catches up with her. Lucky for her she was found at the right time. Things in her world have become dangerous and deadly. Rogue wolves and a despicable, evil are out for blood and revenge. I want to mention this is a four book series. Although each book ends in a HEA for the main characters, the evil continues throughout the series and you will have read on if you want to know the resolution of the evil. It'll be worth it!
Nathan was the pack alpha and the man/wolf shifter stopping at nothing to find the only woman he has ever loved. For twelve years he has been searching! Once he finds her, he will never let her go, even if he has to defy the very rules he enforces. Dana won't share herself; she has made that clear by her words and actions. Nathan lost her because he believed pack law more important than their love. He made a mistake then. But now? Nathan won't force her into their polyamorous way of life. He will do anything to make her happy. If only she will trust him.
John and Cody are Nathan's pack mates and closest friends. Both John and Cody feel a strong desire and longing to be with Dana as well. Too bad for them because Nathan has no intention of sharing her; not if it means she'll run again.
But what if she decides she wants them all? How will Nathan handle this?
I truly loved this book. It was very steamy and I loved how protective and possessive Nathan, John, and Cody are over Dana. Dana was a strong courageous woman and I respected the hell out of her! Nathan was not my favorite of the three sexy shifters. To put it simply...he was, too often, a demanding jerk. John was sexy and sweet and oh so swoon worthy. Last but not least, is Cody. I adored him! He was a sweetheart and he made me laugh.
There are dark times heading for this pack and the suspense had me chewing my finger nails. I can't wait to continue with, "Betraying The Pack," with a new set of main characters.
Not considering the fact that I read it in like 2 days, it was an easy read. Since I found out about reverse-harem books it has been one of my guilty pleasures in reading. Although in this book I did not like the rushed pace. I did not like Nathan and his behavior even though 12 years had passed he acted like a baby and in the end forced his mark on her. I did like John and Kody so much better than the main Alfa. Also did not appreciate the foul language nor the usage of some separate words on repeat. Not sure if I will continue to read other books in the series.
Who says running away will never make you free? Well, Kenny Loggins said that, but he didn't know what he was talking about, because things worked out just fine for Dana...
Dana fears the life that is her destiny. As Lycan female, she is rare and should be treasured but against Dana's desires, she must be shared among the males in her pack. She witnessed her mother's misery and is determined to avoid that life for herself. In an effort to dodge her destiny, Dana runs away from her pack and her future, imposing a life of solitude and loneliness upon herself in order to escape the miserable image she conjured in her mind of how life would be in a polygamous relationship.
After a series of events, she finds herself in a precarious situation. Her mind is at war with her body and she realizes she must put her past misconceptions out of her head and follow her heart.
If you know me, you probably know that Eve Langlais and her characters have a special place in my heart. She truly has a gift for creating likeable characters that you love and may even want to be. If anyone is taking orders, I will take one of each: John, Kody and Nathan. I might need to get my whip out on occasion to get Nathan's ass in line, but I will take him, jealousy, temper and all! She combines just the right amount of humor, drama, and let us not forget sexy scenes...oh, yeah, they are good!
So, I'll wrap this up and quit gushing over Ms Langlais like a little schoolgirl. Bottom line is: it gets my seal of approval from start to finish and everything in the middle. If you are looking for a hot and sexy shifter read that combines menage with a good story and some great characters, then you really should check this out.
Warning: Reading this book may find you panting for three werewolves of your own. Please talk to your doctor before attempting the foursome scene portrayed in this book as it may result in numerous orgasms.
Eve always has the most intriguing warnings...God I love her!!
Since pack law states that woman have to share more than one mate...Dana has decided to run from her pack and her one true love. She's constantly on the run and is always looking over her sholder for eagar werewolves determinded to claim her. Unfortunately, a pack of wolves are hot on her trail and Dana must rely on her former beau Nathan to protect her from said evil pack.
Nathan has always been in love with Dana. Since her werewolf powers emerged...late in life. He was forced to share her with others in his pack....as per pack law. But now that he has taken control of the pack he decides to go in search of Dana...screw pack law. And finally claim his mate. But once he finally finds her and rescues her from some crazy rogues he finds out that his plans aren't as simple as he believed. His two best buds have recognized Dana as their mate and Dana's not as against a polyourous relationship as she used to.
This was awesomw...of course....helloooooo, Eve Langlais is the author!!:) What I love about this world is that the whole polymorous relationship is pretty cool. Its all about the womans pleasure....unfortunately, the women in this world don't have much of a choice in the sitch exept who and how many. I loved Dana's character...she was quite abrassive and loving at the same time. She didnt take shit! I especially loved how she handled herself when a very rude and eagar werewolf pup tried to claim her without her consent...
“Listen here, little boy. I don’t want to be claimed and really don’t give a shit what pack law says. In case you hadn’t noticed, I chose to live outside of one. If you want to live, I’d suggest you forget about trying to claim me. I’ve taken down much bigger wolves than you.” The pup’s face went slack with astonishment—only for a moment. Then male arrogance—also known as the dumbass syndrome—once again took over.
“You can’t threaten me like that, and you don’t get to decide what you want. Pack law says I can claim any unmarked female.” Dana’s patience snapped, and any squeamish feelings over what she had to do evaporated with his stance.
“Really? Is that your final answer? Because, just so you know, my law says any prick who tries to claim me against my will either loses his dick or dies. So, what’s your choice, puppy, because I’m losing patience really fucking fast.”
The men in Dana's life were feckin hawt as well. Nathan was all alpha male and was determined to claim her no matter what she said. It kinda frustrated me at times and he was awfully stubborn about it. To me, he pretty much threw her into the arms of the gorgeous, and patient Doctor(and his bff) John. Ahhh...John! He was wonderful...and was certainly my fav of the bunch. And Kody...the youngest of her perspective mates was hilarious.
It was quite enjoyable to see Dana needle Nathan when he was being all caveman on her. Especially when she told him she wanted to claim 4 mates....FUNNY!!
All in all, if you're looking for a light and funny PNR with a super naughty twist...then this is it!
I have had this setting on my shelf for quite a while. I've read this series way out of order starting with book four, then this one. I encountered the poly relationship in this book and was curious about how it all started with the first couple.
The premise of this series is based on the fact that werewolves breed 6:1 ration in favor of the guys so to keep from dying out, they made it a law that females had to be shared. It's alright if the right atmosphere of love and care and respect happens, but Dana grew up in a nightmare and runs to avoid it when the boy she loved takes back his word and says they must follow the law.
This book was hot and spicy of course. It's reverse harem- though all the boy parts only touch girl parts. That said, there is a series arc about a mysterious leader controlling rogue wolves and, even more deeply developed was the abuse Dana and her mother had to endure that scarred her.
I liked all the suitors Dana picked and it was fun to see their various personalities all start to work together as a unit with Dana. I got why Dana kept her hand on the brake as long as she did and why she made them all sweat it out. It was playful and flirtatious in ways, but I also felt like the focus was entirely on her needs and wants for much of the book. I felt she punished Nathan quite a bit for stuff that was never in his control and she knew it. Just like she had to know that the reason he was acting out in the present was because she was wrongfully rubbing his nose in it. That I didn't like.
But, it was a good start to a series for those who enjoy their reverse harems and shifter romances all in one. I liked this one, but I think I prefer book four, New Pack Order. I'll have to keep reading to see if other series stories knock it out of top spot for me.
This journey into Lycan territory...and the PACK was enthralling.
Dana has been running for 12 years...running from being "just" a warm Lycan FEMALE body that has to give in to the males. She loved Nathan, a Lycan, when she was dormant (her inner wolf hadn't made her appearance). He promised her he'd never SHARE her. But then she became a wolf...and the only way her father and his would allow the match was if he'd SHARE.
She ran...
Nathan finally finds her...and she's in DIRE straights. He puts his paw in his mouth over and over again. He really NEEDED a quick smack with a newspaper (rolled around a baseball bat).
John...ah, what a sweetheart. He wants her too. And her inner wolf is rethinking the NO SHARE policy that she's held onto for so long.
Did I mention Kody? Yes...she wants him too! And then she thinks she's going nuts...for wanting ALL of them.
Throw in a really BAD guy...and the fun just doesn't stop.
This sort of book doesn't appeal to everyone...but I enjoyed it a lot...and have already read the second one... Betraying the Pack
There were times that I really liked this book and parts where I laughed at it, laughed with it,and parts whereI just had to shake my head at it's ridiculousness. The characters had potential but I didn't connect with them. The vampire aspect felt thrown in just for "shock factor" and did nothing but bring the book down in my eyes. Kody and John were sweet and fun but we were supposed to be in love with Nathan.I can't imagine how anyone would be in love with Nathan, even the heroine. I kept waiting for him to redeem himself.Make us realize why the heroine was in love with him after all these years. I ended the book still looking for that reason. He was childish, throwing a temper tantrum or getting drunk, running away when the going got rough. Not alpha material at all. I am not writing off this series, though.
I'm at 40% and so many things don't make sense. Dana's mom was horribly abused by her mates. The alpha of the time knew and didn't protect her. If males are so rampant that they fight for mates, with low births, and low numbers of females; why didn't he remove her from that horror and allow her to choose new mates after healing? One sentence says women have no choice, the next says they can choose their 4 mates. One sentence says Nathan cut a swath through women after Dana rightfully ran, the next he's thinking that his friends can't deny her because no one else will do after a male smells his mate. Well, they consummated their relationship. So how was he able to be with others? He was an a$$, then and now. Knowing she has broken ribs he also tosses her over his shoulder. Some hero. He makes a bet about winning her affection first. As if she were a prize and not a sentient being. Then his very next thought is a combination of wanting a menage with his friend, being homophobic, and then a confusing statement that the possible 3rd mate she picked would outperform them both because he is a hit with the ladies. How? Low female numbers. Next to no unmated women. Are they allowed to look for lovers outside their guaranteed 4 mates? Which, if births are 6:1, still leaves a bunch of males with only hands or humans as dates/mates. So how is Kody to have gone through women like Kleenex if there are none available? All these little details are driving me bonkers and keep pulling me out of the book. And it's hard enough to get into it with such patriarchal drivel to begin with. Maybe they evolve past it? Nathan was willing to fight to be her only mate. Not to allow her the freedom of no mates, he was going to force that on her like it or not. But he wasn't going to make her choose 3 others. So, maybe he grows up a little. I just don't think I'll get there. I'm turning the book in half finished and bowing out. I may try to finish it at a later date and see if these guys grow up, try to treat this rare female as a treasure and not a forgone conclusion to strength in numbers and might is right.
This book came as a bit of a disappointment to me. I've read others by her that were well done. I'm not giving up on her as an author, just this 1 book.
This is a story about a female werewolf who ran from her first love when it became clear he'd share her with others, as per pack law. Twelve years later, he catches up with her. Dana is feisty, strong, and knows what she wants and doesn't want -- at least she thought so before meeting two of Nathan's friends and her wolf longs for them, too. Dana resists the attraction because she grew up with a father who shared her mother with everyone. Most pack relationships are closed -- they may be menage, but it's usually a set number of mates that share a female. Dana's father was an ass who let her mother be used, so of course, Dana doesn't have a positive view of the polyamorous norm of pack life. Now that Nathan has found her, he vows he won't share her. After all, that's why she left in the first place, right? But in her defiance of Nathan's claim on her, she invokes her right to ask for a "true mating", meaning she can choose up to four men to mate with. Nathan has a difficult time accepting this because he has a jealousy streak a mile wide. He's waited twelve years to be with her and now he doesn't want to share her.
Dana overcoming her own fears about being shared was an interesting journey. She fought it, but slowly came to realize it was only natural for her to be drawn to more than one man (in their world). And also came to realize it could be so different from what she witnessed growing up. I loved John and how he could somehow sense her needs and calm her when she started freaking out. And Kody cracked me up. What a big flirt!! Nathan drove me crazy. Yes, he loved her and wanted her to himself, but he'd shoot himself in the foot every time he opened his mouth! And when he tried to explain himself, he just dug a deeper hole! At the same time, I think Dana overreacted about one thing in particular -- the thing that made her change her "mark order". But hey, she'd been on her own for twelve years, away from pack life. I'm thinking she had a lot to get reacquainted with.
Lots of great chemistry between the characters. Steamy sex. So-so suspense plot line, but a decent overall book.
Paranormal romance ménage erotica. Three hot male werewolves and one sexy female werewolf deciding more than one partner may be just what she needed to satisfy her growing desire. Pack dynamics and laws of the polyamorous kind that absolutely need to be updated. Females need to have the right to say no....and make their own choices in lovers.
Book 1 of the Pack series. John and Kody were my favorites. They treated Dana with respect, support and love.
I listened to the audio version narrated by Natasha Soudek. She did a fantastic job of giving each character their own personality in her inflection and tone.
If you like RH, fated mates, independent females, and shifters, this is a good pick. Other than a few weird euphemisms for various body parts, this was a good, very HOT read!
I have wanted to read this one for a while, and I'm not sure why I waited so long, but it was worth the read :) LOVED it!
The book starts off as we meet Dana, She's a strong girl, hard working and a Werewolf - She-Wolves are rare, but male-wolves are over flowing the populations. So when a Male comes across an unclaimed she-wolf, it's his duty to claim her, no matter what ... and Share her with his pack - ummm - Dana grew up with her parents as role models, Her father was a jerk, he wasn't in love with her mom, and shared her with anyone who wanted a shot with her. Her poor mother was sad and miserable, she had so many miscarriages, it was a wonder how Dana survived.
So when Dana was finally old enough to woo - Nathan, the Pack's Alpha's Son did just that. But Dana hadn't fully came into her wolf yet, so as a Dormant Wolf, Nathan didn't have to share her with anyone, and that's the way she wanted it.
But when her wolf finally did come in, and Nathan started talking about her other "mates" She got scared and ran off -
For 12 years Dana lived in fear of having other Males claim her."She preferred to live her life free of pack politics and emotional turmoil. A lonely existence empty of family and a partner, but better to live on her terms than as a sex slave to numerous men. A fragile freedom that required constant guarding."
One day when she was at work, a lone wolf applied for a job where she worked. She told him to bug off, she wouldn't submit to him. After work, he disappeared, but she knew it wouldn't last. He wouldn't just up and leave a lone she-wolf - and she was right. When she got home, they cornered her. She ran out the back door and ran as hard and fast into the woods as she could to get away... But there were too many of them.
The Rouge Wolves that attacked Dana weren't very nice - in fact they beat her so badly she passed out on a few occasions - which was just as well, she was praying for death. Anything would be better than this.. ANYTHING -
Just as the head of the group had come down to her prison to claim her as his own, a fight broke out upstairs - the Rouge ran upstairs. And Dana passed out again when she saw the half wolf/half human beast.
Nathan handles Dana with care - he cannot believe how anyone would be so cruel to a female like that. John, his Beta was steaming pretty heavily himself as he sat next to them in the car. While Kody drove them to the airport to get them home, he couldn't keep his eyes off of the rearview mirror, making sure she was going to be ok.
Something about her that drew these men to her.. But Nathan was the alpha, and he had been looking for Dana for 12 years - TWELVE YEARS! That's a long time! And he thought of nothing else but how to apologize to Dana and tell her that he doesn't care what Pack Law says, she is his and he won’t share her with anyone else.
That wasn't going to sit well with the other Pack Members -
But once Dana woke up, and Nathan DEMANDED that she claims him and he claims her, she is a little taken back by his dominance. But she turns the table on him and demands the right to choose three more mates. (Because he was demanding a claim without her guardian's consent, she had the right to choose 3 more mates of her choice) And her first choice was that oh so attractive Dr. John , then luckily Kody peeked his head in the door to make sure everything was alright, because she chose him next . Then another Male peeked in and she choose him. Lol Nathan was FURIOUS!
Once Nathan realized he wanted Dana and only Dana after she left so many years ago, and now Dana feels the sudden pull from her wolf towards these other men, Nathan doesn't WANT to share.
But it's not his choice anymore - it's all up to Dana, and John and Kody aren't going to back down. They want her just as bad.
This was a great story – there was a big surprise at the end too :) Hot Steamy one on one, two on one, and then Three on one.... No story gets better than that :) lol I am in LOVE with Kody myself - Really looking forward to book 2 - Betraying the Pack..
Defying Pack Law by Eve Langlais is wonderful escapade into the intriguing world of the paranormal werewolf shifter population. Dana, the heroine of this story, is a person the reader can connect with on an deep emotional level. She grew up in a very abusive household with a father who was overbearing and mistreated his own mate in atrocious ways.
Since Dana grew up up in a household with a cruel male role model for a father, she is very skittish about living out her life within the pack parameters because it perpetuates her emotional distress. Female werewolves are rare and therefore are required by pack law to mate with more than one male to lead a menage relationship.
Dana refuses to succumb to pack law and runs away. For twelve years, Dana has carved out a safe, content life where she calls her own shots albeit a lonely life. Though she is in control of her life, she has to be constantly vigilant that her past does not catch up to her; however, one fateful day, Dana’s good luck ceases.
What transpires after that is up to you to read. However, I must say that I really liked this novel for many reasons. One of the most important, for me, is that the characters are believable. Their reactions and actions are ones a “real” person would do in similar situations. Plus, the male protagonists Eve Langlais chose to juxtapose against Dana’s personality were very complimentary of her fiery disposition.
Even Nathan, as annoying as he could be, was the mirror image of Dana’s prickliness and heartfelt emotions. At his most annoying (like her) he was hurting very deeply and not able to voice his needs in the best way. Dana was able to relate to his "causticness" because it is how she would have reacted in a similar situation. The variations of the personalities portrayed in Nathan, John, and Kody were perfect for Dana as life-long mates.
My only complaint about the Defying Pack Law was that the plot could have been more inventive and suspenseful. The person behind a lot of the heartache in the plot came out of left field, in my humble opinion. This, however, did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. Eve Langlais is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I highly recommend this book for the sheer enjoyment of reading a great paranormal romance.
DEFYING PACK LAW is a Reverse Harem book that was written before RH became a subgenre. Back when it was originally published in 2011, ménage à trois/quatre and polyamory books were rather new to the scene just like e-publishers and the indie author boom. With that being said, Eve Langlais can easily be called one of the trail blazers of the genre and this book is a prime example of that.
This book had lots of positives and few negatives. Here's what I thought...
Positives The world building - While the off balanced ratio of male to female wolves isn't exactly original, Langlais put her own twist on it. The laws she created in her world make it stand out amongst the others. I enjoyed the fact that she made sure her readers understood the worst and the best situations that those laws could generate.
Dana's get away strategies - Dana was on the run for 12 years. It takes a lot of planning to keep one step ahead of those looking for her.
John - He was my favorite character. He's thoughtful and has this solid assurance and supportive vibe going on. Plus his response to Dana's surprising choice and the determined yet giving (if that makes sense to you) way he handled the situation was awesome.
The surprising twist as far as who the main antagonist was.
Negatives The main antagonist - While yes there was a twist involved in the big reveal it was only halfway a surprise. The unsurprising part was predictable from the moment that the leader was mentioned.
About the narrator... This is the first performance of Natasha Soudek's that I've listened to. I'm a bit conflicted as to how I feel about her. She was better than average I can say that much. However there were little bits here and there that I feel could have used improvement.
Contains m/f, m/f/m and m/f/m/m sex scenes with no sword crossings 😉
This is a tough one. Eve Langlais seems to be a great writer and I enjoyed some parts because of that writing. There was a lot of wit which I appreciate. The characters started off strong and the dialogue was snappy, combining a variety of emotions with wittiness.
I have nothing wrong with menage stories, when they work. This one, unfortunately, doesn't. Nathan, John and Kody rescue Dana from her would-be rapists only to bring her back as a prisoner to the very life she fought to escape. Nathan claimed to love her, but was clearly obsessed with the one that got away and showed he was little better than the Neanderthals she proclaimed them to be. The story lost my interest as soon as she woke in that bedroom to find herself in the same sentence she had escaped, but it totally became a chore to slog through when the author invoked the "rape is fun" fantasy by having Dana change, not even overnight, but in the space of minutes from not wanting more men to fanatical arousal. Meh. Yes, yes, every woman changes her mind after 12 years dead-set against something to desiring it with all her being. I read a lot of shifter novels and this was extreme even for wolves. Then to have Nathan take her against her will anyway and her blame herself? Please. That is so unworthy of speaking of at all.
Having purchased all four, I find myself in a quandary: waste my time reading them or just delete now? If they follow in the same vein, I foresee mass deletion coming.
Dang, this book is hard to rate. Normally I rate on the writing ability, how good the characters are, whether the story works, etc. And this story does as well as any erotica urban fantasy romance - better than most, because Eve Langlais is that good.
But instead of my normal, I am going to rate on this story's impact on society.
The good: 1. Solid characters - each of the three men in the relationship are different and all actions from each follow logically. 2. Eve Langlais signature hot, hot romance.
The bad: 1. (Happens way to the end) A rape - not a normal physical rape - but a rape none-the-less (kind of physic). Not likely to set off triggers. Where the woman blames herself for it happening and instant-forgives the man.
The bad is why I rated it as a one. We got to stop this poison of women blaming themselves when a man attacks them. Yes, the instance had some things go wrong.
But like a child biting when angry - even when the adult made them angry - we MUST stop the biting. In this case something made the man angry - so he drank - then he attacked the woman he love (said he loved). Adults of all sorts should have more control - women shouldn't hit men and men shouldn't hit women.
Were the actions in character? Yes, absolutely yes. Both the man attacking and the woman blaming herself.
Women constantly blame themselves. "I drove him to do it." No. HE DID IT.
As much as I love Eve Langlais and her characters, I'm going to pass on this one because this is a trope - a poison within our society - we need to stop saying is "okay".
Positives & Negatives I hate to say this about an Eve Langlais book because I normally love her stories, but this one bored me to the point of almost DNF'ing. There are some typos & errors interfered with the flow of the story. It was often repetitive with the thoughts of the MC's. The main characters & the story itself bordered on young adult/new adult. The only thing that kept it adult 'ish were the sex scenes and language. It could have been so much better. The plot was interesting and if the suspense had been developed more into the story that would have been a huge plus. I started off liking Dana and Nathan, then they both got on my nerves. My favorite characters were actually John & Kody. This one had huge potential. Alas, it went astray and left me feeling disappointed and 😴Sleepy!
i've only read a couple of pages so far but dana seems like a stupid dumb bitch she ran away because she did'nt wanna fuck three other wolves now after she's done that nathaniel works his way up the food chain to alpha he finds her no rescues her before she's gang raped by some other fuckin sycho wolves i understand she did'nt like him bossin her around and that she felt hurt and betrayed and shit but bitch you had the chance to be a mate to an alpha and only him so what the fuck does she do she says she wants three damn mates just because dis bitch mad now you know what im doin im jumping up and down like bitch have you lost yo fuckin mind now u gotta fuck them three aswell and thats one of the reasons yo stupid ass ran away for. you dumb muthafucka i was cursing so much after reading those few pages that i m not even about to read anymore. AND FOR EVERYONE READING THIS BOOK I WANT YALL TO KNOW I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE GIVEN A BOOK 1 STAR AND I HAVE'NT EVEN READ THE WHOLE BOOK!!! THATS HOW MUCH I DONT LIKE THIS FUCKIN BOOK THAT BITCH DANA IS STUPID AS HELL SO WAT EVER. Thank You;)
I have read a lot of shifter romances but from what I can think, not many of them have had more then one mate and a ménage. I really enjoyed this one. I was drawn in with the fact that it was a law to have more then one mate, but Dana really blew me away. She was strong and stubborn, but by the end of the book she was happier then she could have imagined.
The stems factor was awesome and I loved the world the author built. It was unique And enjoyable. I do feel like some things weren’t resolved and the lack of secondary characters took away from the whole “pack” feel of the book. Even with that I can’t wait to checek out more books in the series. 4 Stars #2OCCJD
Disappointing story which started off great and fell apart completely at the midway point. Nice characterization, backstory and setting. Unfortunately, after getting the two primary characters backed into a corner during conflict the story takes a bizarre and WTF turn. I could probably overlook that, but the unsatisfactory and shallow resolution regarding both the two primaries and the group relationship made me rate the story only 2 stars.
I loved John ahh swoon he was so sexy. Especially how open he was in regards of relationship and then Kody ha flirtatious, hot , humorous. Then it's Nathan who is down right Netherlands i'm Tarzan your Jane . It's fucken weird plus he rapes oh no you didn't moment for me. We never got to see the living together dynamic that bambed me out hence the 3 stars and there was too much going on like twilight nonsense. But what the stupid thing was it felt the author was trying to create unnecessary drama which was over exaggerated and resloved within a click minus the action.
