Smith was born in Villa Park, Orange County, California. In interviews, she has said she realized she wanted to be a writer sometime between kindergarten and first grade, “when a teacher praised a horrible poem I’d written”, and began writing in earnest in elementary school. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1987, followed by teaching credentials in Elementary education and Special education from San Francisco State University.

She taught kindergarten and special education for several years before becoming a full-time writer. Her first book, The Night of the Solstice, was published by MacMillan in 1987, followed by, Heart of Valor in 1990, and the 4-volume Vampire Diaries series in 1991-2. Three trilogies followed: The Secret Circle (1992), The Forbidden Game (1994), and Dark Visions (1995). The first installment of her popular Night World series was published in 1996, followed by eight more over the next two years. In 1998, Smith began a decade-long hiatus from writing, returning in 2008 with a new Web site and a series of new short stories. The Vampire Diaries series was reissued in 2007, followed by re-printings of The Secret Circle trilogy and Night World series in 2008/2009. The Night of the Solstice and Heart of Valor was also reissued in 2008. Three new Vampire Diaries installments were published in 2009 and 2010.

Smith lives in the San Francisco Bay area “with one dog, three cats, and about ten thousand books.”

I just reread this book, and I remember now why I liked these so much in high school. These books have everything right about them that is wrong with Twilight. For one, it's over three quarters shorter. But that's just for starters.

Briar Creek is just about the quietest town imagineable, so when Mrs. Burdock's nieces, Rowan, Kestrel and Jade Redfern, move in next door, Mary-Lynnette and her brother Mark are obviously intrigued. They have good reason to be. The Redfern sisters aren't just beautiful, they're strange. Different. The Redfern sisters also happen to be vampires on the run, being stalked by their older brother, Ash.

The reason these books are so much better than Twilight is partially because of the women. Mary-Lynnette has personality. She has character, and not just because the author wasnts us to know that she's interesting. Mary-Lynnette has interests.

Much like Edward and Bella, Mary-Lynnette has an instant connection that she doesn't understand with a vampire--Ash--and also like Edward and Bella, Mary-Lynnette and Ash both at first try to keep apart from each other. But unlike Edward and Bella, we know their reasons, and they actually make sense. We see them change their minds about each other, and we understand why. We see them grow together over the course of this short book, and it makes sense.

Ash is hot, of course, but Mary-Lynnette sees right through that. She's too prickly for that.

She wasn't impressed by good looks unless they were the thin, brown, and interesting kind...Gorgeous guys--guys who looked like big ash-blond cats--didn't have any reason to develop their minds. They were self-absorbed and vain. With IQs barely high enough to keep a seat warm.

Mary-Lynnette never falls for Ash because he's a hottie. She is eventually won over by him because of his character, because of parts of who he is--who he really is--that show themselves to her.

And, not to mention, this short little book has a lovely bit of female friendship, between Mary-Lynnette and Rowan. Not to mention the sisterly bond between the three different, but strong and interesting each in their own way sisters.

This book isn't deep by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a fun fast read. It's what Twilight wishes it could be. I suppose a hundred thousand teenage girls can't be wrong, but I wish I could put the books in this series in their hands instead. They're just so much better on every level.

What I like about this book, is the fact that Mary-Lynnette, actually has a choice, she could've made everything perfect and easy for Ash and stay with him, next to him, for eternity, but she decides she can not do with that kind of live.

Ash was such a jerk on "Secret Vampire", and I honestly hated him then, but He was just so different and he is the guy that will make sure he is worthy of the girl - because of himself, and who he was before. I honestly loved him here. Mary is strong, and not so delicate. L. J. Smith has this thing going on ( which is amazing), and all of her leading characters are females. SO this vampires do feed on humans. and Mary has a life out side of her soulmate. Mary loves the stars, and that is how Ash plans to convince her of becoming a Night World person.

Ash totally reminds me of Damon from The Vampire Diaries and every time I read this book, I fall in love with Ash even more.

This is the second installment of L.J. Smith's Night World series, which debuted in the mid 1990s, and featured a hidden world of vampires, witches and shape-shifters. When Rowan, Kestrel and Jade Redfern - three beautiful but unearthly sisters - come to live in Briar Creek, Oregon, Mary-Lynette Carter and her brother Mark find themselves drawn into their dangerous secret. Vampires on the run from the restrictive Night World, the three girls and their new friends must confront a possible vampire-hunter, as well as the sinister Ash Redfern, come to recapture the runaways...

Smith continues her world-building in Daughters of Darkness, revealing more about the "Night World," with its male chauvinism, and "species bigotry." She builds upon the "Soulmate Principle," which also appeared in Secret Vampire , and in a trend that would continue throughout the series, featured the previous installment's "villain" as the romantic lead.

The teen melodrama is a little thick at times, but Smith's narrative has much to recommend it, and I find that I prefer it to the more current (and much more well-known) Twilight saga. At heart, Night World is about the redemptive power of forbidden love, and features fairly complex characters, some of whom start out bad, but end up good. The girls are usually smart and strong-willed, and the romantic resolutions are not always smooth.

Daughters of Darkness stands out in this respect, and has always been one of my favorites. Mary-Lynette is a strong, caring, and very intelligent young woman, and despite her overwhelming "pre-destined" attraction to Ash, she does not surrender any of her principles. Prejudice, whether between different human groups, or between vampire and werewolf, is an "ugly thing," and she has no hesitation in condemning it, even in her soulmate. A brilliant amateur astronomer, she quotes Shakespeare ( The Taming of the Shrew ), and responds to Ash's declaration of love with references to Pride and Prejudice .

Perhaps most impressive of all, Mary-Lynnete decides to stay exactly who she is: "She was Mary-Lynette, and someday she'd discover a supernova or a comet or a black hole, but she'd do it as a human. And Ash would come back next year. And she would always love the night." In short, L.J. Smith offers everything that is missing in Stephanie Meyer's work, and I highly recommend this series to any reader who was dissatisfied with the latter.

I remember reading this when I was 16 and loving it.
Im way older now and my literary tastes have changed but I still enjoyed this.
This series aged surprisingly well and there's no cringe when reading it.
Also, Ash was first book boyfriend and sole reason why I now like them mysterious and tormented.

Štai ir antroji serijos knyga baigta, kuri man patiko labiau nei pirmoji. (Tikiuosi kitose knygos bus daugiau jiems dedikuota).

This was probably my favorite of the Night World series. I just really liked that Ash HATED humans, but then much to his horror, he found his soul mate in... A HUMAN, and I just loved how he couldn't fight that no matter how much he may have wanted to. And for a refreshing change, I liked that they didn't just "walk away into the sunset" at the end. These aren't the most spectacular, "blow you away" stories, and it's been a few years since I've read this one. I just know the way it made me feel when reading it, and I've never found other books to compare with it! They have a unique "soul mate" factor that I've not found in any other book (not the way this is done).

Navah I agreed with you WHOLEHEARTEDLY about this book!!
Twilight is a good book I think, and I DID enjoyo that saga...but Ash Redfern and Mary-Lynnette Carter are the ULTIMATE couple, like Romeo and Juliet and Angel and Buffy.
5 Stars.
Because...
This happens to be the ULTIMATE book ever!!
Best book in the whole world.

Well another quick read. As an adult it's not great to me but when i was younger I would have loved it. You can tell that it's for the younger audience because it's so fast paced to keep attention. I liked the idea of seeing the shifters as all we have seen so far is the vampires. I liked the start of the story but feel the daughters got lost a bit at the end. I like how all the books are basically a different part of the night world so your not getting bored with the same characters.

As an adult reader I gave this a 2 star because some things were not very logical. The story was well written and as a teen I think I would have given it a 4 maybe even a 5. I would not mind letting my children read this book as the love relationships are based on emotions rather than physical appearance. The relationship between the characters are healthy, for example they do not have the male stalking the female or the female saying she is going to die without the male. Yes that is a comparison to the Twilight series, but this series was written long before Twilight was thought of.

The parts I did not find logical is the fact the vampire girls were not going to use any of the powers in the new town they moved too. Why not? I get that they did not want to kill their food (people) but why not talk to each other telepathically. What is the point of not doing that? No one would have known they were doing that. Vampires are stronger than people and one girl had a hard time doing a task a human could do without a problem. Another thing that bothered me about this book is Poppy and James are not in this book. There was a thought of them for a second but I would have liked something to let me know how they were doing. Is Poppy still an illegal vampire? Did her dad except them and her living dead situation? I mean so many unanswered questions.

After reading the first book in the Night World series I didn't really know what to expect from the second one, but I was happy when it turned out to be about vampires as well.

Reading this book, I was surprised to see a character from the first book in it now acting as a main character. This is something that I find to be very creative of the author. Especially taking into consideration what an impact the events in this book have on that character's attitude and life. A character who is troublesome for someone in the first book suddenly gets placed in the same shoes as that person, a 'taste of their own medicine' so to speak, it's very fitting.

Daughters of Darkness was my favorite NW book growing up and revisiting it brought back the same feelings. Ash and Mary-Lynnette's star crossed romance...the true banter of two people who really don't like each other at first... (this is how you do contemporary enemies to lovers y'all)... and then the end that's not really an ending.

I'll always be disappointed that we didn't get book 10 when Ash comes back for her.

Rereading this book and ML and Ash remind me so much of Meredith and Damon in the original TVD. I will always ship those two together and I feel that LJS also liked that dynamic since she incorporated their personalities into ML and Ash.

Mary-Lynette and her brother, Mark, are used to feeling somewhat different to those around them. She is obsessed with star-gazing and he is desperately shy. It’s entirely understandable that they will be curious to see the new arrivals to their quiet town.
What we see is nothing like you might imagine. Their quiet elderly neighbour has told them her three nieces will come and visit. Their arrival to town is memorable, and of course Mary-Lynette’s curiosity knows no bounds.
Before we know it the girls have settled into their new home, having made the shocking discovery of their aunt’s body. Unfortunately, it seems someone is hunting them so they have to come up with a plan.
As with Secret Vampire everything happens very very quickly. The conflict between the human world and that of the Night World is, again, in evidence. What was interesting in this one was the attempt to develop the character of Ash a little more than we’d had previously.

I fell hard for Ash in this one!! He definitely reminded me of all the book boyfriends and characters on TV shows that I love. The other characters were meh at best. While Mary was a bit interesting, especially with her bond with Ash, but she annoyed me most of the time. This book was a quick read, and I do like the fighting against the patriarchy. I just ended up bored, but I finished it because Ash was the best part of the story. And the only reason I kept going.

4 Stars:
The mystery element of the book is pretty interesting. The three sisters are intriguing, and Ash, who was introduced in the first book, does a turnabout and becomes a guy any girl would want to marry.

Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance were well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors, and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!

L. J. Smith just knows how to write interesting and intriguing vampire fantasy books without dragging it on for ages and I just love that. I always enjoy her books! Also can I just get a moment of silence for Mary Lynette and how she’s just an independent woman and not completely obsessing over a boy the entire book. Love that!
