"A Towering Experience" is the story about a drummer named K.D. who moved from Florida to Los Angeles, California to "make it" in a band. As with so many bands trying to make it, the band breaks up and the other members return "home". K.D. decides to stay in L.A. living in his 1973 Volkswagen van and gets a job working for Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard for 3 years while living in his van. His van gets towed and Tower Records goes out of business. The short story is a culmination of experiences that happened in the 3 years.
As a music lover with fond memories of going down to Tower Records in the French Quarter, I thoroughly enjoyed K.D. Sanders anecdotal account of the three years he spent working at Tower Records on the Sunset Strip in L.A. The author writes in an honest, relaxed and conversational style that reflects his carefree attitude and lifestyle.
I enjoyed the celebrity encounters, particularly the one with Steve Perry. Some are laugh-out-loud funny, like the one with Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue.
I look forward to the next installment in the author's memoirs. Beyond the interest in the iconic Tower Records and celebrity encounters, I want to know what happened next in the author's life, as his circumstances are left up in the air.
Whenever I pass the building where Tower Records used to be in the French Quarter, I say to whomever I'm with, "I miss Tower."
This was a quick short story (15 pages) about the author’s experiences while working at “Tower Records”. It documents his non-traditional lifestyle and some of the very cool benefits that come working at a legendary store. Each story is a quick blurb, more of a collection of anecdotes. I’d say this would be a fun read for folks who are big music fans and would enjoy some undocumented history about celebrities.
Please note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review courtesy of the author.
This was just a conversation with a stranger where they try to impress you by being friends with famous people but say it's no big deal. There's no point to the story. The whole this is a collection of "I met So-and-so this one time and some other random stuff with no relation to what I'm saying also happened."
I wasn't sure exactly what to expect with this one (wow, a lot of reviews start that way don't they?) but I was pleasantly surprised. K.D. worked at the famous Tower Records on Sunset Blvd, and this details some of his tribulations there. Not only do you get various stories about celebrities who came into the store, but the fact K.D. was homeless and living in his van during this time period adds some personal drama to the story as well. It's not lengthy but it's well written and never gets boring. If you are a huge music fan or musician such as myself, or if you enjoy slice of life type stories, I think you should check this one out! - Amazon Review
