Return to Zero

Rate this book
Alternate cover edition of ASIN B01FHYJWTS.

The thrilling sequel to "As You Wish" and "Illuminate the Shadows".
Pulled into a world of secrets and lies for the man he loves, Declan Ramsay’s life has changed immeasurably in the eight months since meeting, and falling for his boss’s son, Sam Aiken. Declan journey of personal discovery is about to take a darker turn, and for Sam, the world becomes more treacherous than he could ever have imagined.
Two agents are missing -- presumed dead, while on a reconnaissance mission at an outdoor adventure centre in the Scottish Highlands. Sir James Aiken sends his son and Declan to follow the trail, and discover the fate of the agents.
As the mission offers his first chance to use the skills he learned on the MI6 training course in Morocco, Declan is keen to get started. However, Sir James sees to it that the seeds of doubt and discord have been sewn between the couple, as they begin their mission.
The journey to their Highland location, and the discoveries they make when they reach the G’wan Adventures centre, prove that Sir James Aiken has been less than honest with his son. Events in the Highlands force Sam and Declan to face their greatest fears, and understand what they both really want from life -- and from each other.

3.5 stars. This book was such a strange experience because I enjoyed it, I don’t have any complaints about it, but i cant put my finger on why I don’t have more enthusiasm for it. I think it mostly comes down to the fact that due to how short the books are, it’s difficult to get the depth of complexity in the story and conspiracies to really hit its full potential. I think also, due to the length of the books, this series is really best consumed in a binge session and I had a break between book 2 and 3 which potentially impacted the momentum of the story for me.

It was fun to see Declan starting to find his feet a bit in this new world of espionage, although dude has to be THE MOST GULLIBLE intelligence agent I have ever encountered. And as always the romance between Sam and Declan was steamy, romantic and enjoyable to read.

Gary Furlong continues to do an amazing job narrating these books and his ability to swap between Sam’s English accent and Declan’s Scottish one is so smooth and pleasing to the ear.

Please be aware that everything I am about to say is from the perspective of someone who makes a concerted effort to support authors and artists as I believe it rewarding good work I get enjoyment from. I would have ordinarily happily carried on with this series, but I will be honest, I bought the first three books in a volume 1 box set collection, however, there is no second volume box set and the only way to continue on with the story is to purchase the final three books individually. Additionally, the stories appear to exclusively be on audible and I struggle to justify using an audible credit on a 5 hour audio book. Honestly, I cant help but feeling like I have been kind of caught up in a bit of a marketing ploy to funnel you into the individual purchases lol. I might have to bite the bullet and migrate over to the ebook but gosh I’ll miss Gary Furlongs narration.

If you haven’t yet experienced the wonderful writing of Isobel Starling, the Shatterproof Bond series is a great place to start. Ms. Starling is an incredibly talented writer, and in addition to the intriguing and creative story, I guarantee you‘ve never met a couple quite like Sam and Declan! These two have amazing chemistry, and when you add in the mystery and the drama, it’s a guaranteed great time.

For me, the only thing that could make me enjoy it more? When I’ve got the sensual, sweet, and sexy sounds of Gary Furlong’s voice purring in my ear! Isobel Starling, read by Gary Furlong… it doesn’t get any better than this.

Return to Zero takes full advantage of Mr. Furlong’s talent with accents and voices. I’m always impressed by Furlong’s skill, but when Sam and Declan go undercover his performace blew me away! Moving within conversations between our heros, as well as their undercover counterparts, and using four completely different accents… Well, he is simply spectacular.

In Return to Zero Sam and Declan face some unique and trying challenges to their relationship. The men realize they have to open up and show they can trust each other before they can move forward - both as lovers and as partners. We also get some more history about both men, information about their lives which prove very interesting indeed.

The mystery portion of the Shatterproof Bond story continues to deepen (and we get even more details of Sir James’ dastardly behavior). Looking forward to the next episode of this series, I have no doubt I’m going to enjoy whatever Isobel Starling has planned.

While I did enjoy the continuation of Declan's and Sam's story in Return To Zero, I didn't enjoy it quite as much asIlluminate the Shadows. I liked it, and I liked that the story actually went somewhere and resolved things, but the journey there just didn't quite catch me like I hoped it would. As with Illuminate the Shadows, suspend your urge to disbelieve as soon as you start reading. This isn't anywhere close to a realistic spy novel, and I don't think it's meant to be.

In Return To Zero we see Sam and Declan have their first real fight (and we can thank Sam's father, once again, for coming between them). And Declan takes off, without a word. Bad form, Declan. It's bad enough you jumped to all kinds of conclusions, but you leave without a word? Is this how you handle all difficult situations? It doesn't exactly instill confidence in me regarding the longevity of your relationship with Sam.

Sam still alternates between a fun-loving boyfriend and a self sufficient secret agent so smoothly, you have to wonder if his entire existence is a lie. But he says that the only person that seen the "real" him is Declan, so I choose to go with that.

They both end up on a mission to find out what happened to two agents who disappeared while investigating a corporate retreat and that whole adventure gets intertwined with whoever is behind the red paracord in the previous book. In fact, we get two questions answered in Return To Zero -- who is behind the red paracord? And, what does that silver key go to?

The story was, in many ways, fun and entertaining, but there were a couple things that just annoyed me, and they, unfortunately, took a bit away from my overall enjoyment of the story.

Declan, even though he is a full fledged agent, now, periodically still has horrible self esteem issues and that got a bit tiring. It took so little for him to go into 'feel sorry for Declan' mode, that I kind of wanted to shake him. Also, he had a "cutsie" name for just about everything, and that really annoyed me. When, during intimacy, a character refers to a blowjob as a "blowie" or makes a comment like "hide the sausie", I find it too detracting and it makes me not want to take them seriously. Especially in matters of intimacy, it just makes me roll my eyes.

And while I thought this was going to be the last installment of Sam's and Declan's story, I was wrong! Their story will continue in Powder Burns, so that is something to look forward to.

Snark and Dark...

Those two words come to mind when describing this third book in the fantastic Shatterproof Bond series!

Things are getting darker and serious for our lovers. Declan is now a full agent with ALL, but Sir James’ machinations and secrets drive a wedge between him and Sam. Declan and Sam are now partnered together, but Sam is having a difficult time being open with Declan after so many years of working alone. Sam keeps finding the mysterious red cords, not willing to accept what they may mean.

The spy action really spikes in this one and it’s fun to read, even when things turn quite dangerous. Declan and Sam struggle not only with the mission but with their relationship as well.

The banter and snark is still there—as is the love. These two are amazing and so hot together. I enjoy them when they play, love, and fight. Now we get to see them work together.

Again, no series conclusion here, just another mystery to uncover at the very end. And how do things stand for Declan and Sam? Well, let’s just say that Sam finally finds a place for that key he’s been carrying around his neck.

Like all the previous books in the series, Gary Furlong narrated the heck out of this!! His voice for Declan...swoon-worthy!!

I’m so looking forward to continuing this series and learning more about this great mystery. And of course, seeing the boys in action!

Jeeze the tension was racked up in this instalment to the nth degree and I loved it.

Sam and Declan are still perfectly loved up but now they're on the trail of missing agents and a former enemy who Sam last dealt with three years earlier.

Firmly rooted in Scotland's Cairngorms, this is action packed and still incredibly funny and full of amazingly awesome smexy times between the lovers. There's one scene involving a clearing in the woods and a log that's, well let's just say it'll get your engine running...

One thing I have noticed though, and I don't know if it's because of the American market, but whisky is incorrectly spelt whiskey throughout but when referring to the finest Scotch, like The Glenlivet, there shouldn't be an e in whisky.
Also the Scots Guards don't have an apostrophe ;)

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this romp even though my heart was in my mouth on many occasions. Now I'm dying to find out just who the big bad is and whether Sir James will get his comeuppance.

VOTO 4,5/5

Next chapter of Sam and Declan's spy adventure continues. While Sam is happy to live a somewhat ordinary life, Declan is chomping at the bit. He is ready for his life to begin - the adrenaline, the chase and the possible danger a new case can present... But all is quiet. He feels as if he is being kept in the dark with secrets between him and Sam. When he thinks that finally he is in the know, Sam's father drops a small tidbit that makes him doubt himself and Sam's feelings.

Both men are at odds, they need to breathe and figure out how to go on from there. They manage to hash it out in the wilds of Scotland. I loved the picturesque descriptions of landscapes, how Sam and Declan talked it out and finally made up. The case of missing agents and a suspicious team building camp bring them face to face with one person that Sam thought was gone. He is dangerous, vicious and unhinged. Sam has no choice but to tell Declan all. His story finally shines the light on what Sam has gone through while trying to get his father's approval. My heart hurt for Sam. But Declan is there to reassure him that all will be well. But when they are outmaneuvered, Declan has no choice but to call in the cavalry and hope he gets to Sam in time.

I loved their sojourn in the wilderness, their knowledge and expertise about everything that concerned camping. There was humor, passionate moments as well as desperation when it didn't look too good for Sam. I loved how it all led to Sam's rescue. Sam's father is a difficult character to figure out. Even though he orchestrated the whole debacle, it seemed that there was a kernel of concern for Sam in the end. I do hope there is a heart beating in his chest after all. I Will Always Come For You The Princess Bride by William Goldman
Return to Zero (Shatterproof Bond, #3) by Isobel Starling

Return to Zero book 3 in the highly addictive and entertaining Shatterproof Bond Series by Isobel Starling

This is true love. Think this happens every day?

In this book, Sam and Declan friendship , relationship, trust and love endures some very serious tests and folks, it was heartbreaking and very emotional.

Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.

Yet, we are talking about Wesley and Buttercup and with them love always comes first.

“There is no room in my body for anything, but you”

Gary Furlong narration deserves an standing ovation for his magnificent performance.

Buttercup: We'll never survive! Westley: Nonsense, you're only saying that because no one ever has.

I am undeniable and utterly obsessed with this book series and from it's main characters.

It just gets better and better… at almost 7 hours this is the longest book so far and Starling packs it with an impossible to put down story. All these books build off events from previous books, so you’ll want to listen to them all and in order.

Declan gets more training but still struggles with feeling like he’s years behind Sam. They get a mission where Declan’s experience is invaluable and this seems to put the pair on equal footing. They’re working as a solid team until James and others make the couple hesitate to trust one another. Combine all this with uncovering a company that is quickly becoming not what it appears.

An old nemesis appears and the lovers are separated. The rescue is harrowing and heart wrenching. Gah! I loved it and while it’s a complete story – even more questions are uncovered and I’m looking forward to Counterblow.

Gary Furlong continues a fabulous narration of the series. He’s consistent with all the accents and personalities and switches between characters effortlessly. While I enjoy Starling’s writing immensely, I cannot imagine experiencing this without Furlong’s performance.

This was a better installment in the series I think than the previous one. Still it was a bit over the top at times and well I wanted to smack both men through the first half of the story and just scream, TALK TO EACH OTHER!

Still it was entertaining in the spy games. There wasn't anything really unique or super twisty about what happens in this story. It was pretty clear cut what was going on and it was really just seeing how it would all play out. I will say though, not a huge fan of Sam's dad. :-p

All in all it's a good continuation of the series and I look forward to reading the next book.

Declan and Sam's love story continues with this third book, picking up not too long after the end of the second book. This series should definitely be read in order, as it's following the sample couple and their building story.

Sam and Declan are being sent on their first mission together, now that Declan has been brought into the inner-workings of ALL - the secret organization that Sam's father started - and they must work together to survive against someone out to get Sam.

I love these two together. Sam and Declan have so much chemistry together, and they work SO well together. I love them acting as their fake aliases - Dick and Darling lol - and that they can still find some sexyfun times while on a mission. Of course, things get very serious and my heart was racing as I wondered how they were going to make it out.

Gary Furlong did an awesome job narrating, as always. I love his accents and could definitely listen to him for hours and hours. Can't wait to start up the 4th book!

The 3rd book in the series sees our boys together and Declan setting out on his first mission with Sam.
They end up in Scotland investigating a team building company.
The story was good. I was a little surprised at the ending where the bad guy gave himself up too easily but gload that Sam and Declan came through alright.
I will certainly be reading more of this series in the future.

Book three in the shatterproof series and once again we're swept up in to the tale of declan and sam and all the subterfuge. I love these characters dynamics and how they just go together. The plot was fast paced with exciting thrills and danger that in some places I was on the edge of my seat. With declan getting sucked into sams world they go on there first mission together which is fraught with danger and revelations being exposed. You've got that sinister presence loitering over these characters and it firmly keeps you engrossed. Sad, exciting, edge of your seat action packed story. Thoroughly enjoyed. Loved the cover as well😍

This book continues the story of Declan and Sam. It was longer than the previous books and lost me a bit with the whole spy action, during their first mission together. I enjoyed the beginning of their mission but I struggled through the last 25%. I'll probably continue the series by audio, since I enjoyed the narration at previous books.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Isobel Starling has written what is fast becoming one of my favorite series. I love Declan and Sam. They’re a sweet and sexy couple. They make me laugh, and they make my heart feel all warm and gushy. A quick rundown here. Declan and Sam met at their mutual siblings’ wedding. Declan had always identified as straight, but was always left feeling unsatisfied. Sam is gay, and he’s also a spy. He’s proficient in many languages, and he’s always on some assignment given to him by his father…a man who runs an international spy agency. There is an instant chemistry, and they fall in love quickly and deeply. Gracious, but it was adorable too. Believe it or not, these two manly men are big fans of the movie, The Princess Bride. They also start calling each other Wesley and Buttercup. Seriously. I can’t even with these two. They are just that awesome.

What I really love about this series is the perfect balance of action, mystery, intrigue, and humor along with the romance and sex. Each scene is a piece of a greater puzzle. Nothing is there simply to lengthen the story. It’s all meat and no fillers. The background characters all play an important role, even though a few of them are rather quiet and hang back until they’re needed. Sir James Aiken makes me want to scream. I’ve read a lot of books, and there have been a lot of jerks in those books, but I think he captures the title of King Jerk. The Big Bad Guy in RTZ is terrifying. Once again, I’m not going to give it away, but he made me shudder and left me cold. However, he was able to make the reader see just how much Declan and Sam love each other, and what they’d do to make sure they’re safe from harm.

What I Think: So, Dec is back from training and itching to go on an assignment, anything to prove that this shadow world love has dragged him into is real and not just a game of some rich, bored, old man. Yet, he’s loving every minute spent with sweet, mischievous Sam. Getting to know each other as they build their trust and faith in each other, never losing the humor and nerdiness that began their attraction when an ominous repeat of that little incident in book 2 occurs. Its truly enjoyable the way Mme. Isobel melds erotica with secrets and real life. I want a perfect short miniseries on tv and I know it would be to die for even as Sam decides that its time to bring his loving partner even further into the shadows and so the tale takes off!

I know this tale is all about danger and secrets but I need to pause and talk about those little moments of intimacy because thats what steals my breath again and again. The shared closet, Dec choosing clothes for Sam as they go for a meeting with Mr. Shadows who’s finally deemed it fit to turn up, naked yoga etc. Those are the things that leave one filled with longing.
And trust me when I say these moments are necessary and must be stored up as precious jewels because Sir Shadows is about to rip these 2 apart as he begins to say things that not only remind Dec of what happened during his induction but make him realize that even though he’s walking through hell by Sam’s side, he doesn’t trust him as much as he should. Which of course makes me want to cuff him on the head. Because he’s hurting, he doesn’t realize that Sam is hurting right along with him which is something he would never not notice, given how detailed he is, if he wasn’t so trapped in his head. Please, Mme. Isobel, please promise me that Dec gets seriosuly smacked at some point because he’s making me growly and violent. Some things can only be cured with a good ol’ smacking and this is one of those instances.
But my heart begins to thump for a different reason, tendrils of fear and unease twining themselves round my poor heart as Sir Shadows sends this pair on a job in the lowest time of their relationship. Have I told you I despise Sam’s father? Passionately so? But once more I am distracted by the strength Sam shows as he refuses to let his partner slide into that dark well of self pity and refuses to let go even when things seem to be done. His tenacity is as humbling as Dec’s big heart fills one with longing but this happens to be the one time someone is fucking with Mr. Shadows and I can’t wait to find out who they are because they must have balls of steel. But why does it have to happen in such a beautiful place? The detailing and description ensured Scotland just got added to my bucketlist.
Mr. Shadows is pure evil and even though he does something sweet, I know its because he wants his latest asset working well and focused, not out of the sweetness of his coal lump heart. I am slowly trying to figure out his end game because I am convinced he’s got his own conspiracy.
I kept getting side-tracked as these 2 are so in love that I had to read some parts peeking through my fingers as certain moments made me feel like a shy voyeur.

This couple is anything but vanilla and I love that no matter the situation, there’s always that erotic charge barely underneath the surface, just waiting to break free. As role- and rough-play come into things, they venture into the kind of bdsm I love. If you need some inspiration, this is a good place to learn dirrty talk. Make sure you seat where it’s chilly for fear of over-heating.
But the real danger comes when Sam realizes he’s being used as bait and my heart got wedged in my throat as my tummy roiled pure bile at the thought of a father who would use his son so. I really have to be careful what I wish for in this series because my wish for Dec to be cuffed on the head came true only for evil to pounce. The worst part is he and Dec could do nothing but finish the game setup by Sam’s nightmare and permitted by Sir Shadows. The horror and fear made me feel like my heart had dropped to my feet and I was certain that we had crossed the point of no return. Sam was saved by the skin of his teeth. At which point my worry and tension turned into pure rage. If someone, hopefully, Dec, doesn’t make Sir Shadows bleed at some point, I am going to be utterly dissatisfied. This didn’t stop relief from making my hands and legs all shaky or stop the waterworks that spilled over. First, I need a break from this series to let my heart recover. More importantly, I need a TV series of these tales. How do we make this happen?

Verdict? A violent, thrilling and achy reminder of the shadows and the true meaning of As You Wish.

Book 3 of the Shatterproof Bond Series takes place almost immediately after Book 2, Illuminate the Shadows. I really wish Goodreads gave half stars because I'd say this was a 3.5 - I liked it more than "I liked it" but a little less than "I liked it alot".

This book was a little more challenging for me in a number of ways. The plot was fantastic and the continuity was really good but my issues had to do with one of the main characters, Declan, at least in the first half of the book.

In the first two books he'd been sort of large and in charge, not only that he'd stated numerous times that he didn't like how Sam's dad, his boss, treated Sam. He, in fact, called Sir James Aiken a manipulative bastart a number of times in the first two books and had, in fact, been tortured and interrogated by Sir James as his 'entrance exam' into the secret spy world that Sam lived in.

But in this book, Declan is quick to fall for James' manipulations of pitting him against Sam. It played well into the continuing plot of the book but I found it a little harder to swallow given Declan's own statements in past books. But Declan does eventually dig his head out of his arse midpoint through and that vastly improved the book. I just had to get past him acting like a wee stroppy child throwing a tempter tantrum first.

The tension and the action that the writer brings to the book is quite good. The threat from book 2 comes to fruition in this book and soon Sam and Declan are fighting for their lives in the Scottish Highlands against a ghost from Sam's past - someone with a serious grudge against Sir James and who is willing to make Sam suffer for his father's sins. The two men have to learn to work as a team in order to survive, and they have to be able to trust each other completely.

As I said, the first half was a bit of a challenge but I thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd half!

Brilliant young gay man brings his older brawny Scotsman and sweetheart into the fold…
This is the third book in the SHATTERPROOF BOND series if you don’t count TOP HAT: A SAM AIKEN PREQUEL, which I highly recommend. I have so loved getting to meet and understand these two wiley guys who fall in lust in AS YOU WISH and in love later. In this book they have gotten over some disturbance from the last story and seem to be moving on to better things until…Sir James Aiken, Sam’s father and former sleuth has an undercover business which keeps Sam busy and has enlisted Declan recently (see ILLUMINATE THE SHADOWS). Sir James has sent these two on a mission together. Seems harmless at first.
Fortunately, there is a foreword with a brief synopsis of what has transpired in the last two books. In this book there is the ongoing story of Sam and Declan’s lusty relationship but a couple other interwoven plots, one to be resolved in this book and the other may take to the end of this series. There is some explicit M/M love, desire, angst, suspense and intrigue. What I thought was fascinating was the reappearance of Declan’s younger self who “arrives” in military fatigues and keeps “real” Declan on task. LOVE the spectacular ending even though I cried.
As I write this review, I can vividly see these books put in a TV series like Masterpiece Theatre or on Starz Cable Channel. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through A Novel Take PR and it comes highly recommended for readers who like mystery, suspense and M/M romance.

🗻 Their first assignment together; could it also be their last?!💥😲

👍👍😥😲⌛💪🔥
4.5🌟 stars
Brain, brawn and survival skills come front and center in this installment of Sam and Declan's adventurous romance in the Shatterproof Bond series. It had a slower start in their London scenes, but once the guys take on their first assignment together the pace and tension build, all things related to a twisted piece of red rope! It's exciting, often steamy, and heavy with cloak and dagger, but at the center of it all is Sam's weird relationship with his father/employer and an old nemesis juxtaposed against his out of the stratosphere love and passion for Declan.

Declan continues to fight his resentment about being kept in the dark, but he proves forgiving and a tower of strength when he's needed most. My kind of hero! And, he's got one or two secrets of his own to share with Sam, including a lovely secret/surprise at the end. Unsurprisingly, the story concludes with a danger still on the horizon and a quote from The Princess Bride; onward to book four and more thrills with Westley and Buttercup!😉

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Throwing in the towel on this series two books too late.

These books are just so terrible, and I’m finally giving up on the series. I wrote a review of book one that highlighted all the reasons it was terrible (and the couple of reasons why I was willing to look past how terrible it was). The second book didn’t work for me at all, but I told myself to push through it. By the time I got to the halfway point in this book I was just done. I couldn’t stand the way the conflict evolved between Declan and Sam, and I hated Declan’s childish behavior and how easily he was manipulated by James. The lack of communication was infuriating to the point of ridiculousness and Declan’s horrible treatment of Sam and frequent turns towards violent behavior destroyed everything I liked about this couple. With their relationship broken, there was nothing left to enjoy in the series. There was no amount of working through their issues that could have saved them for me. I decided to stop throwing good time after bad by reading something that I stopped enjoying it. I’m glad to be walking away without wasting any more time with these characters in this world. I plan to forget about this series as soon as I hit “post” on this review.
