I'd rate this book a must-have for budding authors, if nothing else to compare some of Weiland's insights to what you're currently working on.

She takes the classic screenwriter's structure (see Syd Field et al) and explains how the successful novel follows a similar structure to movies, whether you like it or not. Mess with structure at your peril...

Weiland moves in a linear fashion through the various writing milestones (hook, inciting event, the various plot points, midpoint, the various pinch points) masterfully, illustrating her point by reference to classic texts and/or movies (Pride & Prejudice, Master and Commander, Ender's Game, It's a Wonderful Life) allowing you to follow along without even having to read the novels.

I actually used Weiland's structure to watch ten movies, stopping to note the time of occurrence of various events within the structure and noting where the movies lagged for me. The results were uncanny and entirely validated Weiland's thesis.

This book is incredible value for money given the wisdom it imparts, and the Box Set - including the Novel Workbook - is well worth getting if you're serious about your own writing.

I can't give it higher praise than saying it tells you a bunch of things you don't want to think are true, and makes you believe they are.

Really gets you thinking about your story structure

I have a story idea, whilst reading this book, my own story started to come to life. Thank you, I needed this book. So many ideas arose from your exercises and questions.

This really wasn’t what I was looking for. I’ve had some really good English and writing courses in the past that covered a lot of this.

If you’re new to story structure and timing, or have read very little good fiction, then this would be an excellent textbook to get familiar with those topics.
