In 2014 James signed a year-long exclusive deal with Valiant Entertainment where he wrote The Delinquents and Quantum & Woody - the latter of which received 6 nominations at the 2014 Harvey Awards; including Best Writer, Best New Talent, and Special Award for Humor noms for James.
He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Mara and son Devlin. There, James has written for film, television, and video games. But he plans to create comics as long as you'll have him.

I've grown into a big fan of Valiant comics but one of my biggest gripes is: of late, in their constant efforts to be accessible, their stories have tended to feel way too rushed. And oh goodness, it's no more evident than in this stumble, fall, and crawl across the finish line for the Unity series. The story of the return of the surviving Armor Hunters and their efforts to hack into GIN-GR and turn her against her new friends in Unity deserves much more than this lackluster shit that we got. It's like they weren't even trying. This might be a product of bringing on a new writer for this last volume, but whatever. Get it together guys.

It was an okay finish to the series. Really did not add up to the overall story. But I finally completed the entire Armor Hunters storyline with all the assorted tie-ins. The highlights were the stories dealing with Bloodshot and X-O Manowar.

Three issues.

The first two make up a neat little story tying up loose ends from Armor Hunters. It was well structured, action packed and cool. The third one was one of those supersize #25 specials, and it had a bunch of short vignettes. These are often hit or miss, but this was a hit. I laughed a few times. Donny Cates writes one of them, and I thought that was dope. I had no idea he’d done any Valiant.

Anyway, if you’re into Unity, obviously you need this to round it off. I think you’ll enjoy it. I did.

Probably the worst entry in the Unity series. Half baked and wrapped up quickly.

Yet who are those guys trying to kid?
Issues 23 and 24 are really great, the best you can expect of this group of heroes of the Valiant Universe.
But in the final part of this TPB I find the final chapter, the issue 25.
Excepting the Bart Sears part, the rest of the artists are trying to fool the Unity readers.
James Asmus and Justin jordan are tryint to play Deadpool with an absurd cartoon story and jokes like "ops, I'm nude, sorry!".
Dan Schkade and Rafer Roberts are the living proof you can work in comic-books even if you have no idea of scripts nor artwork's. Even you can ignore the respect to the 24 past issues and their readers. It doesn't matter: you have the job.
Michael Kupperman, Karl Moline and Matt Kindt: just the same, just like Schkade and Roberts.
I don't understand how an editor can knock out 24 issues of a great job with such a nonsense.

****************

Unity and X-O Manowar thought the Armor Hunters were a problem that they had dealt with and could put behind them. But two of the Hunters escaped, and now they're going to launch a second assault that will put the entire team at risk.

We open with two issues by James Asmus in place of Matt Kindt, with fill-in art from Diego Bernard and Karl Moline, the Revenge Of The Armor Hunters story. This has a pretty good fake-out partway through that I didn't expect, but that's mostly all I can say that's decent about it. Malgam seems to have had a change of heart off-panel, while the rest of the team spend two issues scrabbling about on the back foot, and it's only Livewire's technopathy-ex-machina that gets them out of it. Bernard's art seems uneven, probably due to three inkers on one issue, while Moline's jagged style doesn't suit the characters at all and ends up being difficult to decipher at certain points.

Then issue 25 is collected in its entirety, which is mostly just random one-shot stories with a framing device of Quantum and Woody pitching a Unity movie. These are mostly pointless, with the one page PSA comics probably being the best. Then Matt Kindt returns for one final story, which is nice, but there's a feeling of incompleteness; Unity's story doesn't end, or even reach a milestone. The team stays together, there aren't any big upsets, it kind of just fades away.

It almost feels like Valiant gave up on this title three issues early, but produced these anyway. It's not a strong ending, or an especially fitting one, for a series that had such high highs.

Malgam has been watching holograms of his fallen team mates, but they speak to him of setting himself free. Quartz, the armor hunter who is being experimented on by GATE, frees himself. Gin-Gr goes awol with Unity still inside the ship. All are caused by Helix, the armor hunter who secretly got away using her stealth ability, and who is now kicking everyone's behinds. Livewire adds Helix to Gin-Gr's threat assessment systems, which incapacitate her, winning the day.

The last issue has contributions from several artists and writers. Some of the stories are actually funny and there's a reference to 47, so it gets a star just for that.

This one featured two storylines. The first was the return of the Armor Hunters which tied into the Armor Hunters storyline and I really enjoyed. The other was a humor issue which was the last of the series. It was okay but didn't seem to fit well at all with the theme of the series. Deadpool fans would probably dig it, though.

Overall this was a good series and as I've said previously I remain impressed with the reboot of Valiant Comics.

Not even worth reading. The story in the first two issues was terrible and extremely half-assed. The last issue was just a bunch of short stories that were awful with maybe a couple of funny lines of dialogue.

Honestly, I am disappointed with Unity overall. Besides the two crossovers with X-O Manowar which were both really good everything else was either awful or decent. Outside of the crossovers I wouldn’t recommend Unity.

The "Revenge" story is pretty by-the-numbers stuff. It's enjoyable enough but it's not up to the standard set in the previous volumes.

The real highlight is the 25th issue special -- hilarious stuff in there.

I didn’t read issue #25 and don’t plan on reading it but #23 and #24 were excellent.

My least favorite Unity volume.

The main arc feels shoehorned and rushed to get them to issue 25.

And the consistency of 25 varies greatly.
