The Rosewoods #3

Playing the Part

Rate this book
Kaylee Bennett has never felt like she really fit in at The Rosewood Academy for Academic Excellence, but this year she feels even more like an outsider. Life has done a one-eighty for Kaylee and as she returns to the posh school for girls, she can’t bring herself to tell her secret to her friends and definitely not her long term crush, Phillip Carson. Not that Kaylee could ever imagine he would be attracted to a quiet bookworm like her anyway. But then there’s Declan Ryan, the gorgeous exchange student who seems to be interested, until Kaylee finds out his secret and why he might actually be into her, and it has nothing to do with her charm or love of English literature. To complicate matters, Kaylee gets stuck running the school’s production of Romeo and Juliet, directing both Declan and Phillip with the help of Rosewood’s sexy first year teacher, Mr. Stratton—as if the Westwood boys weren’t enough of a distraction! Determined to stay away from Declan and make things work with Phillip, Kaylee isolates herself from her friends and hides out in the house of cards she’s built to protect herself, but how long will it stay standing? Playing The Part is the third book of The Rosewoods, an exciting new Young Adult series for readers who love fun, flirty love stories.

Still good

In this book we take a pause from Brooklyn and follows Kaylee instead. The timeline is paralleled with the first to books. The writing is still good, the romance cute and the shenanigans fun. I will keep on reading and loving this series for what it is, fun and easy with the right amount of heartache.

The first 3/4 of this book was trash. The inner monologue of Kaylee was nearly enough to DNF this book, which I have not done in YEARS! I understand she is 17, but Jesus Christ. The author really didn’t do Kaylee justice by hiding how strong and brave of a person she actually is for so long. She hid her behind a veil of self sabotage and self hatred, and it really took away from the overall quality of the book. The author so far has written such strong female characters and I felt this book was such a large step backwards in the world she had built up to thus far.

Thankfully the last 1/4 of the book really brought the book back around. She gave Kaylee her self worth, self love, and self respect back! It was rough, but I’m glad I finished it in the end.

I have absolutely LOVED the first two books and I am excited about picking back up at book four. I look forward to continuing following along to the badass female characters!

I was kind of surprised to see Kaylee as the main focus of this book, as the previous two have centered around Brooklyn. I enjoyed learning what was going on in her world though, and being from Iowa myself, found some amusement in her depiction of Dubuque and her summer working in a diner. Knowing Kaylee's backstory also made her a little more relatable as a character in this series. I wonder if the author has more in store for us regarding the other girls of Rosewood. I think it would be interesting to see a book centered around Emmie or Chelly as well. As with the other books in this series, I flew through it and eagerly started on the next. I really do think this series is best suited to teen girls, but adults who are young at heart or like to travel down memory lane will also enjoy these books.

No wonder guys say that girls give them whiplash, not being able to keep up with mixed signals.
This tale is about a young lady, keeping her own secrets, trying to go back to a crowd she no longer feels as though she fits in with.
Then there are the guys, both hot, but something off with both of them.
Interesting how things work themselves out.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was nice to see things from Kaylee’s point of view. The characters are great. You have boy crazy girls and boys that are crazy about the girls. It is pretty realistic for this age group. I appreciate that this is a clean series.

This is Kaylee's story of coming back to Rosewoods for her junior year. Her life was turned completely upside down over the summer, and she's keeping some big secrets from everyone, including her best friend and roommate. As her CSA Rosewwods, she's in charge of the school play. This year it will be in conjunction with Westwoods Academy, the boys' school down the road. So not only is she dealing with her secrets, both her crushes re trying out for the play. Phillip, who she's crushed on for the past two years. And Declan, the super hot new Irish guy who seems to be very interested in her. But are they all keeping secrets? Who can Kaylee trust?
And on top of that, her faculty advisor for the play is the new, young, sexy science teacher. Now she has to sit next to him and work closely with him through the whole thing. AND...the Dean is counting on her to make this year's play a huge money-making success? Talk about pressure! Will Kaylee be able to pull this off?

*Thanks to the author for providing me with an e-copy of the story in exchange for an honest review.*

This story in the Rosewoods series is about Kaylee Bennett and her life at Rosewood Academy. Coming back to Rosewood, Kaylee knew things would be different; she knew she was different. Her whole life went from being great to being stressful. Accepted back to Rosewood on a scholarship, she became afraid that if her friends knew, they would start to treat her differently and look at her in a different light. Then there are her boy troubles with Phillip, the boy who she threw up on the year before at the dance and Declan, the new handsome Irish boy who saved her from embarassment by asking her to dance. She has no idea what to do because she has an unrequited crush on Phillip, but she is also intrigued by Declan. However, when she finds out something that changes her mind about him, she's not so sure about anything anymore. Along with these troubles, she also has to run the school play due to her community service assignment. With no time to spare for herself, she feels like she's going to be driven insane.

Again, another fantastic book written by Katrina Abbott. This is my third review for one of her books and I can honestly say it didn't disappoint. I loved that we were being able to see more into why Kaylee acted like she did in the other books. Also, Kaylee was one of my favorite characters in the other books with Brooklyn as the main character so I was excited to be reading about her. However, one of the most annoying attributes about her character was her indecisiveness about the guys who were interested in her. Also, I didn't really like her obliviousness to how Phillip was treating her and using her for his own needs and wants. Declan was obviously so attracted to her and her to him, but when she heard the things she did, she became cold towards him and I felt like she could've just confronted him about those things if anything. Even though she is not a confrontational character, she should've just asked Declan instead of avoid him every time she got the chance to. I still love Kaylee though, she is a very practical character. I really loved Declan as well; in terms of the boys in the books, I felt as though he was really sweet and caring and even though Kaylee kept giving him the cold shoulder, he was determined to try to win her over. Finding out what I did about Kaylee and the masquerade ball was hilarious. I really did not see that coming at all. Even though it was surprising, it was great to see how it all turned out. Overall, I enjoyed this book and I can't see what is next in the series.

My Review: I have to admit that I was very disappointed that this series jumped to another main character and view point with this book. That resulted in a lot of glazed over review of the previous two books with a new view point. That said, the more I read the more I really liked getting to know Kaylee and oh dear lord, Declan! I am reviewing immediately after finishing reading it and I have to say I am still laughing about the ending, it was just too perfect! I am definitely going to go download the rest of the series ASAP.

Book 3 -- Well this was a game changer! This book is not told from Brooklyn's point of view. Its from Kaylee Bennett and seems to run parallel in time to book 2. For Kaylee, she is not new to Rosewood but coming back to Rosewood for her this year is much different than past years. Her whole life went from being great to NOT - and its much more than financial hardship in her life. She has been allowed to return to Rosewood but on a scholarship. Since all of her friends are all rich she didn't want them to know this detail in fear that they would start to treat her differently.

Then there are her boy troubles with Phillip, the boy who she threw up on the year before at the dance and Declan, the new handsome Irish boy who saved her from embarrassment by asking her to dance. She has always had a crush on Phillip, but Declan -- he is nice, cute, and a little mysterious. However, when she finds out something that changes her mind about him, she's not so sure about anything anymore. Along with these troubles, she also has to run the school play due to her community service assignment. With no time to spare for herself, she feels like she's going to be driven insane.

This book could of gone two ways with a complete change of point of view from a secondary character and being written in the same timeline as the previous book -- as I don't think its easy to write in a parallel time and hook the reader in addition to bringing a secondary character into the starring role. Katrina pulled it off beautifully! Kaylee was a sideline character in the previous two books but she had mystery to her. I enjoyed being able to see more into why Kaylee acted like she did in the other books.

Again, Katrina Abbott does not dissapoint!

I love this series so much, the books are cute and short reads (maybe a bit too short? :P), and the storyline is again somehow cliché but in a good way! The books are so pleasant and entertaining to read whenever you want to keep your mind of things and relax :)

I was a bit sceptical with the change of point of view, but this one worked perfectly.
I liked how the book quickly sums up the story from the previous books, and then continues on, although I am a bit confused about when the events of this book happens compared to the last book...
I wish there were more hints about what might happen to the other girls in this book that would unfold in future books (there might be now, but I haven't noticed). I feel that there were so more foreshadowing it the two other books :P

Again, the characters are so well thought of although I wish there were more appearances from some them :) I am so sad leaving them for now...
Also, I am really impressed by the rather unusual love triangles that surprisingly work REALLY well ha!

I can't wait for the next book to come out!
Ps: I think these book would be perfect as a movie, need I say more? :P

I liked this book, so obvious who she would end up with but fun along the way. The first couple of books were told from Brooklyn's point of view, so I had to get used to Kaylee's voice.

I love how everything is magnified during highschool, I'm pretty sure I over analysed every interaction I had with boys too.

Who doesn't like an Irish accent?

Who hasn't swooned over a cute male teacher?

There's always a douche and a knight in shining armour to save the day.

I like the fact that this series has included different characters telling their stories too! It's good to know the friendship circles problems and difficulties even if the last book was left on a cliffhanger and it frustrates me deeply having to wait to find out! But I loved learning more about Kaylee and why she had been acting so strange and then all the girls to stand by her as they should.
