You can’t miss it with Amazon. Put a good story in the Amazon Rainforest and you have my attention. Add to it a nefarious organization with a secret agenda to change the world, lots of action and wild, murderous rituals of indigenous tribes, and you are all set for a thrilling adventure!

I am a bit of a sucker for series with the same main character being thrown into random situations and this series doesn't disappoint. Only some plot holes made me drop it a star... but this was so fun and refreshing! I'm binging the series so brb 😂

When this book started, it was quite a bit better than book one, The Enigma Strain, and I had hopes that, despite a rough start to the series that said first book presented, this would be a series I enjoyed quite a bit.
Then the climax of the book came.
When I wasn't bored and disinterested with what was happening, I was going 'Wait, what? When did this thing that was referenced happen?' (while not caring enough to actually go back to see what I'd missed), or mentally facepalming and going 'No. That is not remotely plausible. That is not how things work.'
That last complaint is why the book is rated so low, and it was only my enjoyment of the first part that keeps it from being lower.
If you are going to base a book in reality, and have everything else be... somewhat plausible , then you cannot, at the end, have such implausible things as , or , just because of the paper-thin excuse of .
No. That is not how logic works. Those are all things I could buy in a fantasy novel. But the entirety of both the beginning of this and the preceding novel make sure to place it as one grounded in reality. Meaning there's only so much suspension of disbelief that is possible.
Overall, despite a promising start, this book was a massive let-down, that left me confused and irritated. I would not recommend it.

This book has everything you need for a great read: awesome premise that hooks you early, a fun setting, and plenty of trouble. This is a great read.

এই পৃথিবীতে এমন অনেক রহস্য আছে, যা এখনো মানুষের নাগাল পায়নি। মানুষ জন্মগত কৌতূহলী প্রাণী। নিজের কৌতূহল নিবারনের জন্য দূর দূরান্তে ছুটে চলে। অজানাকে জানার চেষ্টায় বিপদে ঝাঁপ দিতে পিছপা হয় না। এভাবেই আবিষ্কার হয় এমন কিছু সত্য, নানান ঘটনা; যা চমকে যেতে বাধ্য করে। এর মধ্যে দিয়েই এগিয়ে যায় কোনো এক জাতি, কিংবা পুরো পৃথিবী। আবিষ্কার হয় আড়ালে থাকা কোনো এক উপাখ্যান।
আমরা স্বপ্ন দেখি, স্বপ্নের মধ্যে বিচরণ করি। ঘুমের মধ্যে দেখা এই স্বপ্ন ঘুম ভেঙে গেলে হারিয়ে যায়। আমাদের অবচেতন মন স্বপ্নের ভিত খুঁজে বেড়ায়। স্বপ্ন কখনও আনন্দদায়ক, কখনও বেদনাদায়ক। আবার কখনও বিভৎস। এই স্বপ্নের উৎপত্তি খুঁজতেই যেন গোটা দল নিয়ে গবেষণা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে ড. আমান্ডা মেরন। নতুন কিছু আবিষ্কারের খুব কাছাকাছি সে, যা বদলে দিবে মানুষের স্বপ্ন দেখার ইতিহাস। যে স্বপ্ন মানুষ দেখছে, তাকে রেকর্ড করে উপস্থাপন করা বড় আবিষ্কারই বটে।
কিন্তু সমস্যাটা হলো অন্যখানে। স্বপ্ন রেকর্ড করতে গিয়ে দেখা গেল, বেশ কয়েকজনের স্বপ্নে একই অবয়ব ঘুরেফিরে আসছে। স্বর্ণে মোড়া সেই মানুষকে ওরা নাম দিয়েছে স্বর্ণমানব। কিন্তু এই স্বর্ণমানবের রহস্য কী? যাদের স্বপ্নে এই রহস্যময় অবয়ব দেখা যাচ্ছে, তাদের সেই স্মৃতিটুকু নেই। যেন তাদের অবচেতন মন এই রহস্যকে তাড়িয়ে বেড়াচ্ছে।
এই গবেষণার জন্য ড. আমান্ডা মেরনকে যারা ইনভেস্ট করছে, তাদেরও আছে এক অন্যরকম রহস্য। প্রকাশ্যে আসছে না তারা। আমান্ডা নিজেও তাদের পরিচয় জানে না। আড়াল থেকেই টাকা ঢালছে ওই সংগঠন। কিন্তু কেন? সন্দেহ হয় আমান্ডার। তাই এই রহস্য সমাধানের জন্য বন্ধু পাউলিনহোকে স্মরণ করে সে। পাউলিনহো ডাক দেয় জুলি ও তার বয়ফ্রেন্ড হার্ভি বেনেটকে।
পুরোনো এক ঘটনা যেন হার্ভিকে স্থির থাকতে দেয় না। ওরা ছুটি কাটাতে যাচ্ছিল। তার মধ্যে এই তলব। কিন্তু এমন একটা নাম বেনেটের কানে আসে, সব ছেড়েছুঁড়ে তার পেছনে ছুটতে ক্লান্তি আসে না। “ড্রাচ গ্লোবেল”! কী এই ড্রাচ গ্লোবেল? এর রহস্য কী? কেন বেন খুঁজছে এর মূল? কোন শত্রুতার মুখোমুখি হবে এবার?
এর সাথে এল ডোরাডোর সম্পর্ক বা কোথায়? প্রাচীন মিথ? না-কি সত্যি আছে এরূপ কোনো শহর। আসলেই কি এক ডোরাডো কোনো শহরকে বর্ণনা করে? না-কি এল ডোরাডো মানে অন্যকিছু। যা সামনে আসবে, বিশ্বাস হবে তো?
পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড় ও রহস্যময় বন আমাজন। যার ভিতরে একবার প্রবেশ করতে পারলে আর ফিরে আসার আর উপায় নেই। আমান্ডাদের গন্তব্য এই রহস্যময় বন। নিজেদের অজান্তেই হয়তো এমন কিছু আবিস্কার করেছে সে, যার জন্য পিছে লেগেছে একদল মার্সিনারী। সেই দল থেকে ওদের উদ্ধার করতে জুটে গেছে রিজ্জি নামের সাবেক মিলিটারি স্নাইপার। সবাই মিলে চলেছে আমাজনের গহীন বনে।
কিন্তু পেছনে ছুটে আসছে মৃ ত্যুদূত। সামনে ম রণ ফাঁদ। কী তাদের উদ্দেশ্য? কেন এভাবে অস্ত্রশস্ত্র নিয়ে ওদের তারা করছে? আমাজনের জঙ্গলে বিপদ বরাবরই ওঁৎ পেতে থাকে। প্রতিনিয়ত জীবনের সাথে লড়তে হয়। জলে, স্থলে— সবখানেই যেন ভয়ংকর সব প্রাণীর আবাস। আছে আদিবাসীদের ভয়। এই মৃ ত্যুকূপ থেকে ওরা কি বেঁচে ফিরতে পারবে?
না-কি আমজনের এই ভয়াল এক রহস্য একে একে গ্রাস করে নিবে সবাইকে…
▪️পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়া :
“দ্য আমাজন কোড” বইয়ের ভূমিকা থেকে জানতে পারি, লেখক জেমস রোলিন্সের থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে বইটি লিখেছেন। যদি জেমস রোলিন্সের বইয়ের সাথে তুলনা করতে হয়, তাহলে এই বইটি আমাকে ভীষণ হতাশ করেছে। জেমস রোলিন্স মানে বিজ্ঞান, ইতিহাসের সাথে আক্রমণের এক অনন্য মিশেল। এই বইতে আক্রমণের বিষয়আশয় তো ঠিকই ছিল কিন্তু বিজ্ঞান আর ইতিহাসের সেই পূর্ণরূপ পাইনি। লেখক পুরোটাই অ্যাকশন দৃশ্যের উপর নির্ভর করে গল্প লিখেছেন।
বইটির শুরুটা আগ্রহ জাগানিয়া। বিজ্ঞানের পূর্ণ এক প্রতিফলন ছিল এখানে। মনে করেছিলাম, এর মধ্য দিয়েই গল্প এগিয়ে যাবে। শুরুটা গল্পের ভিত্তি দিয়েছিল ঠিকই, কিন্তু চালিকাশক্তি হতে পারেনি। যখন থেকে শত্রুপক্ষ গল্পে প্রবেশ করেছে, তখন থেকে বিজ্ঞান বলি বা ইতিহাস; পুরোটাই পার্শ্ব চরিত্র হয়ে ওঠেছে। অথচ উপন্যাসের মূল চরিত্রে একজন বিজ্ঞানী ছিলেন, একজন ইতিহাসবিদ ছিলেন। তারপরও সেই দিকটা ফুটিয়ে তুলতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছেন লেখক।
অথচ বইয়ের নামানুসারে বিজ্ঞান বা কোড ভেঙে অভিযান পরিচালনা করার গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম হওয়ার কথা ছিল। কিন্তু সেই বিষয়টা আর হয়ে ওঠেনি। হ্যাঁ সূত্র ধরে আমাজনের অভ্যন্তরে অভিযান পরিচালনার বিষয় এলেও আমার কাছে পুরোটা বোধগম্য হয়নি। বরং বেশিরভাগ বিষয়টা কাকতালীয় লেগেছে।
আক্রমণের বিষয়টাও এমন। এত এত আক্রমণ হয়েছে, গোলাগুলি চলেছে, রকেট লঞ্চার মারা হয়েছে; তবুও হতাহতের সংখ্যা নেই ব���লেই চলে। এমন হতো যদি সবাই অভিজ্ঞ, ট্রেনিংপ্রাপ্ত। কিন্তু রিজ্জি ছাড়া কেউ অভিজ্ঞ না থাকার পরও এভাবে বারবার বেঁচে যাওয়া কাকতালীয় বটে। ক���ন্তু অভিজ্ঞ মার্সেনারী দল ঠিকই হতাহত হচ্ছে। আবার আমাজন অভিযানের সময় যে সবাই বেঁচে গিয়েছে এমনও না। যারা আমাজনের জঙ্গলে লড়াই করে টিকতে পারেনি। তারা ওদের দলের কেউ না। মূল দল অক্ষত রেখে দুয়েকজনকে লেখক দেখানোর চেষ্টা করেছেন, যে এই জঙ্গলে টিকে থাকা কঠিন।
তবে পাউলিনহো ঠিকই আঘাত পেয়েছিল। এখানে এত দুর্গম পথ পাড়ি দিতে গিয়ে গুরুতর আঘাত পাওয়া কোনো একজনকে লেখক ঠিক ফুটিয়ে তোলেনি। এতগুলো চরিত্র, বিভিন্ন দৃশ্যে লেখক সবাইকে জায়গা দিতে পারেননি। হয়তো মনে ছিল না তার। হুটহাট মনে পড়লে তখন একজন দুইজনকে লেখক নিয়ে আসতেন। যেমন, দুর্গম পথে পাড়ি দেওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে পাউলিনহো যে আঘাত পেয়েছিল, সেটা খুবই গুরুতর। কিন্তু সেই আঘাতে তার যে কষ্ট হবে, সেটা অনেকগুলো দৃশ্যে অনুপস্থিত ছিল। পাউলিনহো নামের কেউ যে উপন্যাসে আছে, সেটাই একসময় ভুলে গিয়েছিলাম। পরে হয়তো লেখকের মনে পড়েছিল, তখন মাথা ব্যথা দিয়ে পাউলিনহোকে গল্প নিয়ে এসেছিলেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণভাবে।
আমাজনের প্রকৃতি লেখক ভালোভাবেই বর্ণনা করেছেন। কত বিপদ যে সামনে এসে দাঁড়ায়, কত কষ্ট করতে হয়; সবই ঠিক ছিল। কিন্তু যার খোঁজে ওদের এই অভিযান, কাকতালীয়ভাবে তা পেয়ে যাওয়া ঠিক পছন্দ হয়নি। যেন লেখক কিছু করতে না পেরে জোর করে সমাধান করে দিয়েছেন। চরিত্রগুলোর মাথা খাটাতে হয়নি। এছাড়া প্রতিটি আক্রমণ থেকে বেঁচে যাওয়া, ঘটনাক্রম যেন কাকতালীয় কিছুর উপর ভিত্তি করেই ছিল।
আমি একটা বিষয় ঠিকঠাক বুঝিনি, এই অভিযায়ের কারণ কী? কেবলই স্বর্ণমানব খোঁজা? সেটা নাহয় মেনে নেওয়া গেল। কিন্তু শত্রুপক্ষ কীসের ভিত্তিতে আক্রমণ চালাচ্ছে? তাদের উদ্দেশ্য পরিষ্কার হয়নি। হ্যাঁ, লেখক ব্যাখ্যা দিয়েছে ঠিকই। কিন্তু তাও যে গোঁজামিল মনে হয়েছে। কোনো সুসংগত যুক্তি সেখানে ছিল না। খলচরিত্রের পক্ষ থেকেও পুরোপুরি ঘটনা তুলে ধরা হয়নি। একটা বা দুইটা দৃশ্য ছিল কেবল। তাদের কার্যক্রমও ধোঁয়াশায় ঘেরা। এর দৌড়ঝাঁপ, মানুষের মৃত্যু, হত্যাযজ্ঞ যে কারণে ঘটেছে; তার কারণ সম্পূর্ণ অজানা এখানে।
তবে আমার সবচেয়ে বেশি ভালো লেগেছে দলটার লড়াকু মনোভাব। হারার আগে হেরে না যাওয়ার প্রচেষ্টা। টিকে থাকতে হলে প্রকৃতির কাছে নিজেকে বিসর্জন দিতে হয়। প্রকৃতির মতো করে গড়ে উঠতে হয়। তবেই না প্রতিকূলতাকে বুড়ো আঙুল দেখিয়ে বেঁচে থাকা সম্ভব হবে। বইতে এল ডোরাডো সম্পর্কে যে ভিন্ন এক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি দেখানো হয়েছে, সেটা ভালো লেগেছে। প্রচলিত চিন্তাধারায় না গিয়ে লেখক ভিন্ন ভাবনায় সাজিয়েছেন এই রহস্য।
চরিত্রগুলো এখানে একটু দূর্বল। বেশ কিছু চরিত্রকে গুরুতে দেওয়া হলেই রিজ্জির ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে কিছু জানানো হয়নি। সবই ভাসাভাসা। চরিত্রগুলোকে ঠিকঠাক গুরুত্ব দিয়ে গভীরে যাওয়া হয়নি। আরেকটি বিষয় দৃষ্টিকটু লেগেছে, চারিদিকে গোলাগুলি হচ্ছে আর বেন ও জুলি সবার সামনে রোমান্স করছে। এটা তো পরেও করা যেত। এটা লেখকের দুর্বলতা প্রকাশ করে। তিনি স্বাভাবিকতা আনতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছেন এখানে। যেন আগে থেকেই জানতেন তার চরিত্রগুলোর কিছু হবে না।
▪️অনুবাদ, বানান, সম্পাদনা ও অন্যান্য :
অনুবাদক হিসেবে আহমেদ সাদকে পাশ মার্ক দেওয়াই যায়। প্রথম অনুবাদ হিসেবে তিনি দারুণ করেছেন। সহজ, সাবলীল। একবারের জন্যেও মনে হয়নি এটি তার প্রথম অনুবাদ। তবে কিছু জায়গায় উন্নতির সুযোগ আছে। যেমন শুরুর দিকে ড. য়ুকে একবার য়ু, আরেক জায়গায় উ বলে সম্বোধন করছিলেন। ব্রাজিলকে এক জায়গায় সাউথ আফ্রিকার বলা হয়েছে। আমি জানি না বই প্রকাশের আগে প্রকাশক প্যানেল থেকে পড়া হয় কি না, হলে তো এগুলো চোখে লাগার কথা। না-কি তাও বিষয়গুলো সম্পর্কে অবগত নন?
আরেকটা বিষয় অনুবাদকের জানা উচিত। স্প্যানিশ ভাষায় Carvajal-কে কারভাহাল উচ্চারণ করা হয়, কারভাজাল নয়। এক জায়গায় দেখলাম অনুবাদক ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালকে ফার্মাটিক্যাল আবার আরেক জায়গায় ফার্মাসেটিক্যাল লিখেছেন। অনুবাদকের প্রবাদ নিয়েও একটু পড়াশোনা করা জরুরি। তিনি প্রমাদ গুণে-এর পরিবর্তে, প্রলাপ গুণে লিখেছেন। আবার ঘোঁট পাকানো-কে ঘুঁট পাকানো লিখেছেন।
কিছু অংশে এক দুইটা শব্দের অনুপস্থিতি অর্থ বিভ্রাটের সুযোগ করে দিয়েছে। সবটা তো মনে নেই। এক জায়গায় লেখা ছিল, নাম জানা অসংখ্য নদী। যেখানে হওয়ার কথা ছিল, নাম না জানা অসংখ্য নদী। এই ছোটখাট কিন্তু গুরুত্বপুর্ণ ভুল অনুবাদের মান কমিয়ে দেয়। এর দায় অনুবাদকের চেয়ে প্রকাশনীর বেশি অবশ। সম্পাদনা ঠিকঠাক না করালে এগুলো বেশ চোখে লাগে। অথচ প্রকাশনী থেকে একবার পান্ডুলিপি পড়লেই ঠিকঠাক করে ফেলা সম্ভব। বানান ভুল বা ছাপার ভুলের কথা তো বাদই দিলাম।
প্রচ্ছদ ভালো লেগেছে। যদিও আমার একটা প্রশ্ন আছে। প্রচ্ছদে একটি হেলিকপ্টার দেখা যাচ্ছে। কিন্তু পুরো গল্পে হেলিকপ্টারের ব্যবহার নেই। তাহলে?
▪️পরিশেষে, আমাজন এমন এক জঙ্গল যেখানে রহস্যের সংখ্যা অগণিত। মানুষ মনে করে মানুষ পৃথিবীর সব রহস্য সমাধান করে ফেলেছে। কিন্তু প্রকৃতি নিজের রহস্য নিজেই গোপন রাখতে পছন্দ করে। চেষ্টা করলেও এর নাগাল পাওয়া যাবে না। কিছুতেই না।

পুরোনো এক ঘটনা যেন হার্ভিকে স্থির থাকতে দেয় না। ওরা ছুটি কাটাতে যাচ্ছিল। তার মধ্যে এই তলব। কিন্তু এমন একটা নাম বেনেটের কানে আসে, সব ছেড়েছুঁড়ে তার পেছনে ছুটতে ক্লান্তি আসে না। “ড্রাচ গ্লোবেল”! কী এই ড্রাচ গ্লোবেল? এর রহস্য কী? কেন বেন খুঁজছে এর মূল? কোন শত্রুতার মুখোমুখি হবে এবার?
এর সাথে এল ডোরাডোর সম্পর্ক বা কোথায়? প্রাচীন মিথ? না-কি সত্যি আছে এরূপ কোনো শহর। আসলেই কি এক ডোরাডো কোনো শহরকে বর্ণনা করে? না-কি এল ডোরাডো মানে অন্যকিছু। যা সামনে আসবে, বিশ্বাস হবে তো?
পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড় ও রহস্যময় বন আমাজন। যার ভিতরে একবার প্রবেশ করতে পারলে আর ফিরে আসার আর উপায় নেই। আমান্ডাদের গন্তব্য এই রহস্যময় বন। নিজেদের অজান্তেই হয়তো এমন কিছু আবিস্কার করেছে সে, যার জন্য পিছে লেগেছে একদল মার্সিনারী। সেই দল থেকে ওদের উদ্ধার করতে জুটে গেছে রিজ্জি নামের সাবেক মিলিটারি স্নাইপার। সবাই মিলে চলেছে আমাজনের গহীন বনে।
কিন্তু পেছনে ছুটে আসছে মৃ ত্যুদূত। সামনে ম রণ ফাঁদ। কী তাদের উদ্দেশ্য? কেন এভাবে অস্ত্রশস্ত্র নিয়ে ওদের তারা করছে? আমাজনের জঙ্গলে বিপদ বরাবরই ওঁৎ পেতে থাকে। প্রতিনিয়ত জীবনের সাথে লড়তে হয়। জলে, স্থলে— সবখানেই যেন ভয়ংকর সব প্রাণীর আবাস। আছে আদিবাসীদের ভয়। এই মৃ ত্যুকূপ থেকে ওরা কি বেঁচে ফিরতে পারবে?
না-কি আমজনের এই ভয়াল এক রহস্য একে একে গ্রাস করে নিবে সবাইকে…

“দ্য আমাজন কোড” বইয়ের ভূমিকা থেকে জানতে পারি, লেখক জেমস রোলিন্সের থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে বইটি লিখেছেন। যদি জেমস রোলিন্সের বইয়ের সাথে তুলনা করতে হয়, তাহলে এই বইটি আমাকে ভীষণ হতাশ করেছে। জেমস রোলিন্স মানে বিজ্ঞান, ইতিহাসের সাথে আক্রমণের এক অনন্য মিশেল। এই বইতে আক্রমণের বিষয়আশয় তো ঠিকই ছিল কিন্তু বিজ্ঞান আর ইতিহাসের সেই পূর্ণরূপ পাইনি। লেখক পুরোটাই অ্যাকশন দৃশ্যের উপর নির্ভর করে গল্প লিখেছেন।
বইটির শুরুটা আগ্রহ জাগানিয়া। বিজ্ঞানের পূর্ণ এক প্রতিফলন ছিল এখানে। মনে করেছিলাম, এর মধ্য দিয়েই গল্প এগিয়ে যাবে। শুরুটা গল্পের ভিত্তি দিয়েছিল ঠিকই, কিন্তু চালিকাশক্তি হতে পারেনি। যখন থেকে শত্রুপক্ষ গল্পে প্রবেশ করেছে, তখন থেকে বিজ্ঞান বলি বা ইতিহাস; পুরোটাই পার্শ্ব চরিত্র হয়ে ওঠেছে। অথচ উপন্যাসের মূল চরিত্রে একজন বিজ্ঞানী ছিলেন, একজন ইতিহাসবিদ ছিলেন। তারপরও সেই দিকটা ফুটিয়ে তুলতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছেন লেখক।
অথচ বইয়ের নামানুসারে বিজ্ঞান বা কোড ভেঙে অভিযান পরিচালনা করার গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম হওয়ার কথা ছিল। কিন্তু সেই বিষয়টা আর হয়ে ওঠেনি। হ্যাঁ সূত্র ধরে আমাজনের অভ্যন্তরে অভিযান পরিচালনার বিষয় এলেও আমার কাছে পুরোটা বোধগম্য হয়নি। বরং বেশিরভাগ বিষয়টা কাকতালীয় লেগেছে।
আক্রমণের বিষয়টাও এমন। এত এত আক্রমণ হয়েছে, গোলাগুলি চলেছে, রকেট লঞ্চার মারা হয়েছে; তবুও হতাহতের সংখ্যা নেই ব���লেই চলে। এমন হতো যদি সবাই অভিজ্ঞ, ট্রেনিংপ্রাপ্ত। কিন্তু রিজ্জি ছাড়া কেউ অভিজ্ঞ না থাকার পরও এভাবে বারবার বেঁচে যাওয়া কাকতালীয় বটে। ক���ন্তু অভিজ্ঞ মার্সেনারী দল ঠিকই হতাহত হচ্ছে। আবার আমাজন অভিযানের সময় যে সবাই বেঁচে গিয়েছে এমনও না। যারা আমাজনের জঙ্গলে লড়াই করে টিকতে পারেনি। তারা ওদের দলের কেউ না। মূল দল অক্ষত রেখে দুয়েকজনকে লেখক দেখানোর চেষ্টা করেছেন, যে এই জঙ্গলে টিকে থাকা কঠিন।
তবে পাউলিনহো ঠিকই আঘাত পেয়েছিল। এখানে এত দুর্গম পথ পাড়ি দিতে গিয়ে গুরুতর আঘাত পাওয়া কোনো একজনকে লেখক ঠিক ফুটিয়ে তোলেনি। এতগুলো চরিত্র, বিভিন্ন দৃশ্যে লেখক সবাইকে জায়গা দিতে পারেননি। হয়তো মনে ছিল না তার। হুটহাট মনে পড়লে তখন একজন দুইজনকে লেখক নিয়ে আসতেন। যেমন, দুর্গম পথে পাড়ি দেওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে পাউলিনহো যে আঘাত পেয়েছিল, সেটা খুবই গুরুতর। কিন্তু সেই আঘাতে তার যে কষ্ট হবে, সেটা অনেকগুলো দৃশ্যে অনুপস্থিত ছিল। পাউলিনহো নামের কেউ যে উপন্যাসে আছে, সেটাই একসময় ভুলে গিয়েছিলাম। পরে হয়তো লেখকের মনে পড়েছিল, তখন মাথা ব্যথা দিয়ে পাউলিনহোকে গল্প নিয়ে এসেছিলেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণভাবে।
আমাজনের প্রকৃতি লেখক ভালোভাবেই বর্ণনা করেছেন। কত বিপদ যে সামনে এসে দাঁড়ায়, কত কষ্ট করতে হয়; সবই ঠিক ছিল। কিন্তু যার খোঁজে ওদের এই অভিযান, কাকতালীয়ভাবে তা পেয়ে যাওয়া ঠিক পছন্দ হয়নি। যেন লেখক কিছু করতে না পেরে জোর করে সমাধান করে দিয়েছেন। চরিত্রগুলোর মাথা খাটাতে হয়নি। এছাড়া প্রতিটি আক্রমণ থেকে বেঁচে যাওয়া, ঘটনাক্রম যেন কাকতালীয় কিছুর উপর ভিত্তি করেই ছিল।
আমি একটা বিষয় ঠিকঠাক বুঝিনি, এই অভিযায়ের কারণ কী? কেবলই স্বর্ণমানব খোঁজা? সেটা নাহয় মেনে নেওয়া গেল। কিন্তু শত্রুপক্ষ কীসের ভিত্তিতে আক্রমণ চালাচ্ছে? তাদের উদ্দেশ্য পরিষ্কার হয়নি। হ্যাঁ, লেখক ব্যাখ্যা দিয়েছে ঠিকই। কিন্তু তাও যে গোঁজামিল মনে হয়েছে। কোনো সুসংগত যুক্তি সেখানে ছিল না। খলচরিত্রের পক্ষ থেকেও পুরোপুরি ঘটনা তুলে ধরা হয়নি। একটা বা দুইটা দৃশ্য ছিল কেবল। তাদের কার্যক্রমও ধোঁয়াশায় ঘেরা। এর দৌড়ঝাঁপ, মানুষের মৃত্যু, হত্যাযজ্ঞ যে কারণে ঘটেছে; তার কারণ সম্পূর্ণ অজানা এখানে।
তবে আমার সবচেয়ে বেশি ভালো লেগেছে দলটার লড়াকু মনোভাব। হারার আগে হেরে না যাওয়ার প্রচেষ্টা। টিকে থাকতে হলে প্রকৃতির কাছে নিজেকে বিসর্জন দিতে হয়। প্রকৃতির মতো করে গড়ে উঠতে হয়। তবেই না প্রতিকূলতাকে বুড়ো আঙুল দেখিয়ে বেঁচে থাকা সম্ভব হবে। বইতে এল ডোরাডো সম্পর্কে যে ভিন্ন এক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি দেখানো হয়েছে, সেটা ভালো লেগেছে। প্রচলিত চিন্তাধারায় না গিয়ে লেখক ভিন্ন ভাবনায় সাজিয়েছেন এই রহস্য।
চরিত্রগুলো এখানে একটু দূর্বল। বেশ কিছু চরিত্রকে গুরুতে দেওয়া হলেই রিজ্জির ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে কিছু জানানো হয়নি। সবই ভাসাভাসা। চরিত্রগুলোকে ঠিকঠাক গুরুত্ব দিয়ে গভীরে যাওয়া হয়নি। আরেকটি বিষয় দৃষ্টিকটু লেগেছে, চারিদিকে গোলাগুলি হচ্ছে আর বেন ও জুলি সবার সামনে রোমান্স করছে। এটা তো পরেও করা যেত। এটা লেখকের দুর্বলতা প্রকাশ করে। তিনি স্বাভাবিকতা আনতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছেন এখানে। যেন আগে থেকেই জানতেন তার চরিত্রগুলোর কিছু হবে না।
▪️অনুবাদ, বানান, সম্পাদনা ও অন্যান্য :
অনুবাদক হিসেবে আহমেদ সাদকে পাশ মার্ক দেওয়াই যায়। প্রথম অনুবাদ হিসেবে তিনি দারুণ করেছেন। সহজ, সাবলীল। একবারের জন্যেও মনে হয়নি এটি তার প্রথম অনুবাদ। তবে কিছু জায়গায় উন্নতির সুযোগ আছে। যেমন শুরুর দিকে ড. য়ুকে একবার য়ু, আরেক জায়গায় উ বলে সম্বোধন করছিলেন। ব্রাজিলকে এক জায়গায় সাউথ আফ্রিকার বলা হয়েছে। আমি জানি না বই প্রকাশের আগে প্রকাশক প্যানেল থেকে পড়া হয় কি না, হলে তো এগুলো চোখে লাগার কথা। না-কি তাও বিষয়গুলো সম্পর্কে অবগত নন?
আরেকটা বিষয় অনুবাদকের জানা উচিত। স্প্যানিশ ভাষায় Carvajal-কে কারভাহাল উচ্চারণ করা হয়, কারভাজাল নয়। এক জায়গায় দেখলাম অনুবাদক ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালকে ফার্মাটিক্যাল আবার আরেক জায়গায় ফার্মাসেটিক্যাল লিখেছেন। অনুবাদকের প্রবাদ নিয়েও একটু পড়াশোনা করা জরুরি। তিনি প্রমাদ গুণে-এর পরিবর্তে, প্রলাপ গুণে লিখেছেন। আবার ঘোঁট পাকানো-কে ঘুঁট পাকানো লিখেছেন।
কিছু অংশে এক দুইটা শব্দের অনুপস্থিতি অর্থ বিভ্রাটের সুযোগ করে দিয়েছে। সবটা তো মনে নেই। এক জায়গায় লেখা ছিল, নাম জানা অসংখ্য নদী। যেখানে হওয়ার কথা ছিল, নাম না জানা অসংখ্য নদী। এই ছোটখাট কিন্তু গুরুত্বপুর্ণ ভুল অনুবাদের মান কমিয়ে দেয়। এর দায় অনুবাদকের চেয়ে প্রকাশনীর বেশি অবশ। সম্পাদনা ঠিকঠাক না করালে এগুলো বেশ চোখে লাগে। অথচ প্রকাশনী থেকে একবার পান্ডুলিপি পড়লেই ঠিকঠাক করে ফেলা সম্ভব। বানান ভুল বা ছাপার ভুলের কথা তো বাদই দিলাম।
প্রচ্ছদ ভালো লেগেছে। যদিও আমার একটা প্রশ্ন আছে। প্রচ্ছদে একটি হেলিকপ্টার দেখা যাচ্ছে। কিন্তু পুরো গল্পে হেলিকপ্টারের ব্যবহার নেই। তাহলে?
▪️পরিশেষে, আমাজন এমন এক জঙ্গল যেখানে রহস্যের সংখ্যা অগণিত। মানুষ মনে করে মানুষ পৃথিবীর সব রহস্য সমাধান করে ফেলেছে। কিন্তু প্রকৃতি নিজের রহস্য নিজেই গোপন রাখতে পছন্দ করে। চেষ্টা করলেও এর নাগাল পাওয়া যাবে না। কিছুতেই না।

Crikey. Terrible book. Between the tangible reason they're all there (dont think the author could even really tell you), the women who are as much use as chocolate fireguards cutting about in ballet pumps and the constant mention of the mercenaries, it leaves you with many a question, how did they nav back, why did Ben think trotting to the amazon would be the answer to finding his nemesis, how did no one, particularly the sniper chap not cotton on to someone having a tracker on their person and WHY does Amanda shift between someone Ben keeps perving on to a tiny, frail ghoul woman. Dumb.

Harvey "Ben" Bennett is at it again
A company is just on the verge of perfecting something that was thought to be impossible -- recording dreams. When they stumble across a hidden message in certain recordings. Not knowing where to turn next, she enlists the help of some of her close friends to figure out what these hidden messages are actually trying to tell her.
The narration for The Amazon Code was done by Mike Vendetti, who has done numerous other Nick Thacker audiobooks. They work together for a reason and it shows. Vendetti is able to take Thackers words and make them jump off of the page. Sure, it's not "full cast" ensemble recording or anything, but Vendetti really does help Thacker's work go from good to great.
I'm thrilled to see more from Harvey Bennett. I really liked him as a character in The Enigma Strain (which I LOVED by the way). And I'm glad to see him back in a slightly different take on a story.
Thacker is one of my all-time favorite authors. Everything he comes out with has been well received by me, and with good reason. He knows how to write amazingly thought out fast-paced thrillers.
Overall, The Amazon Code was incredibly enjoyable. The action was fast-paced, and the story flowed really well. It was definitely a roller coaster climbing towards the climax. The final pages/minutes of the book just flew by as I tried to figure out what was going to happen. I love a book that can do that without leaving me feeling unsatisfied.

Another Edge of Your Seat Read by Nick Thacker
Having read the last book in this series I was already familiar with the main characters in this book. This one was full of excitement. You never knew if the good guys were going to prevail or not. There were unexpected twists and the end was nothing like I thought it would be. You'll have to read this book to find this all out!

There are some books that you feel you must write you review immediately after finishing because they were so good; this is NOT one of those books
Sadly I read the predecessor of this book after having acquired this one and somehow this slipped through the cracks

This book makes the first one look almost like literature.
This book is uniquely absurd. The author includes two strong, mature, intelligent, female character and then has them act like spoiled sixth graders.
Maybe it's the style; where we get first person perspective from multiple characters. Maybe it is that despite the word Code in the title at no point is there a code in the story. But in reality it is just dreck. The plot is beyond absurd. We have our hero and heroine from the previous book jetting off to the amazon because of a flimsy pretense.
Once there they are almost immediately thrust into a madcap adventure that includes their hotel being bombed. Luckily someone in the book knows someone else who is the perfect fit for their need be it a retired sniper who know teaches jungle survival or a researcher who is an expert on El Dorado.
Our expert on jungle survival lives in a state of the art underground bunker and has all the tools one could dream of. And he's their guide' so it seems a bit absurd that he lets the two females go off into the jungle in their regular shoes. Yet the author points this out. Somehow a woman manages to escape a sinking ship and swim to shore wearing a pair of 'flats'
Either he's a misogynist or he sucks at his job.
This book is just dumb, don't read it. Your brain will that you later.

This book follows on very nicely from the first, with continued characterisation.
Lots of action that's not out of place, very well written.
Shady business dealings trying to muscle in on genuine research, in which Ben becomes embroiled.
A chase up the Amazon (sounds like James Bond), and the discovery of long hidden secrets, and the opening up of a legend.
The finish is a nice twist, easy to think it's a come-down but in actual fact a good reflection on the effects of human nature.
Definitely left me keen to read the next one.

I'm not sure what I expected from this series. But the first three books, including this one have been great. I have enjoyed each totally new thriller with bits of plot overlap from one to the next. Each can easily be read as strong stand alone novels but I have really enjoyed the backstory and character development gained from reading in order.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit... It's an interesting premise... I love novels that offer an alternative take on a well known legend and turn it on its head. This style of book reminds me of Rollins and Cussler, two authors who I love and will buy just about any book from them. With that said, this book could have been considerably longer, portrayed the same events and been just as much of a page turner. By that I mean I felt that it actually moved too fast. I had to flip back and forth in several places, particularly from the point where the group was split up in the jungle, to see if I had missed something. It's not that the ideas weren't well developed, but the actions and events they led to took several leaps that could have used (in my opinion) more detail and explanation. I'm not a novelist, and clearly this is just my opinion, so take that should be taken at face value only. Additionally, I'd love to have seen some maps of their journey and the pick up sticks drawing. Ultimately I think this book offers a thrilling, thought provoking next installation of Ben and Julie's adventures in opposition to the evil dragon corporation. I see that the third adventure is on Kindle Unlimited as well and have downloaded it, too!

The book is a well written fast paced action-packed thriller. Just the kind of book I enjoy. However I did find a few logical pitfalls (spoilers ahead)
1. How did Reggie not find anything fishy about the mercenaries shoting his friends but letting Rhett go with only a small stab wound.
2. Who funded the trip? No one paid Reggie, not was there any payment discussion for the plane nor for the boat. When such trip is involved with ya that kind of supplies and ammunition it's very difficult to believe that anyone will do it for free.
3. When Reggie and Ben were trying to distract the mercenaries to allow everyone to enter the boat , how did the captain know excatly when to start it. Why wasn't he afraid of the gunfire and ask them for an explanation.
4 . How did the men, who sailed the Amazon river for a living die but all the outsiders survive
5.How come the piranhas only attack one local guy and let everyone else pass through the river unharmed.
I guess these points were ignored by the author to forward the plot and make it more interesting. Cutting 2 points for that. Otherwise it's a good read.

I really enjoyed reading this book - hadnt come across this author before but I always enjoy exploring new authors. I found this book very exciting, found it hard to put down but as I usually read before bedtime I end up stopping because of drooping eyes!. It was a real page turner and had unexpected turns and twists. I will definitely be looking to find other books by this author and also in this series as I seem to have missed the first book.

An action story that was filled with all that a reader is looking for in an adventure story. Damsels in distress, surprise attacks, gun fights, conspiracy, murder and general mayhem. All of this takes place in the Amazon and there is also contact with an unreported tribe for good measure. All in all an excellent story that was well-written.
I have rated this book four stars and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventure stories.

First time reading something by Nick Thacker. Must say Amazon Code was a good read.
I really enjoyed the suspense and uncertainty with regard to the characters . There are thrillers and there are THRILLERS. This is the latter.
I love a good thriller and I actually had to lay this down a few times so I could catch my breath. I loved the characters and the plot and the whole idea of dream mapping. I would love to be smarter and study the brain, but I am a realist. And old. No more school for me. So I will just keep reading thrillers and follow Mr Thacker.

INTRIGUING AND ACTION PACKED
No spoilers in my reviews:
Nick thacker does an excellent job of creating a very edge of your seat thriller set in times and places that span centuries. Yet, the thread of humanity remains the same. He develops excellent characters, moves the plot brilliantly, has some excellent twists and basically just tells a really good story. I recommend it to pretty much anyone

I've read a few of Nick Thacker's books, and this is definitely his best work today. If you enjoy thrillers in the vein of Ludlum and Cussler, but written lean and trim, this is the book for you. Gripping action, and enough twists and turns to keep you reading just one more chapter before you go to bed!

The pacing was good, and the author can certainly write a good action scene. However, the book overall felt a bit generic as many of the characters were underdeveloped or utilized only to further a plot point. I never really connected with the main characters or found myself invested in their lives.

Pretty good even stand alone
This is the 2nd book in the series but I read it first. If kept me hooked all the way through and the lead character back story was easy to understand without reading book 1. Great take on conquistadors mythology too

I don't I have read several of Mr. Thacker's books. Haven't had a single complaint. I enjoyed all of them. Now I see I have more to read. I'll get back with you later for the new ones I have read. Keep it up Mister

An Action-Packed Adventure…But Psychics?
At its heart, The Amazon Code is action/adventure, with all the extreme feats and unlikely events that this genre implies. Set in the Amazon (obviously), it becomes a veritable catalog of the gruesome ways someone might die in that world – hostile natives, vicious creatures, unforgiving habitat. Then, add to that mix a shadowy and utterly ruthless organization committed to your demise and the stage is set for some hair-raising action.
The potential reader should view this book’s listed genre with skepticism, in my opinion. On Amazon (the online store, not the region), the book is listed as Psychics, as well as Action & Adventure. I don’t get it. With the references to neuroscience, as well as the author’s synopsis mentioning “emerging science,” I was thinking technothriller. For example, the clues that drive our protagonist, Harvey “Ben” Bennett, to the Amazon come from fMRI-based videos of people dreaming, a capability that appears close at hand. But perhaps the author went with the psychic category because the link to science is weak with more hand-waving in crucial places (how did they get that map?) and niggling errors (e.g., the incorrect definition of fMRI) than one would hope.
The second precautionary note for potential readers is that you may want to start with book 1 – always a good idea, but maybe more so for this series, because you are joining an on-going story. Ben is single-mindedly pursuing a ruthless organization he faced in book 1, even though he’s totally unsuited to the task. He’s a park ranger. The villains are part of a clandestine group unencumbered by ethics and at ease with the use of extreme violence. Hopefully, his obsession is explained in the first book, because the attempt to attribute it to his personality in this book just doesn’t work (“Ben was just being Ben — stubborn, boorish, and reclusive”). Lots of people share those traits, but none of them go to the Amazon based on a rumor, untrained and unprepared, hoping to form a rag-tag team with the right mix of skills to win the day. Ben, however, does. It’s good suspense, but a bit inexplicable even for action/adventure.
The Amazon Code also has the somewhat unusual distinction of being loaded with action – chases, gun fights, grisly deaths – and yet, it feels slow. Part of the reason is that chapters are written from the perspective of different characters, so with each change in point of view, the reader gets another recounting of the hopelessness of their situation. Additionally, each character recounts events from their lives in general. The technique can greatly aid character development, but it’s overused and sometimes makes little sense. I was never sure, for example, how either Ben or Julie saw their relationship, beyond the fact that they thought it was something they couldn’t escape (“Hours of arguing and slamming doors had taught her that there was nothing that could force them apart, except, ironically, death”). Is that supposed to be romantic?
