Anders' Quest #2

Fighters of the Code

Rate this book
A giant expansion untapped.
A different ancient threat ignored.
A spunky elf re-pantsless.

The vast expansion to the massively multi-player online role playing game Annals of Gentalia has been spread wide open and Anders, the elf protagonist from the last book is primed and ready to experience everything it has to offer.

Anders must set off on an even higher staked quest to attempt to save his own ass. He and his companions are stretched to the absolute limit attempting to reach the climax of the island expansion.

Many questions weigh heavily on Anders’ mind. Can he find who was responsible for breaking the world? Is this expansion also filled with sexually charged monsters ready to take advantage of any avatar that gets in their way? (Of course it is! This book would be dreadfully boring if it wasn’t!) More importantly to Anders though is his own personal question, "How could I possibly have lost my pants again?!"

Warning: Contains m/m content and euphoric monster banging.

Since this is the second book in the series, anyone reading should know what they're getting themselves into. Meaning: if you can dream it up, CB Archer has written it, but not before making it crazier, more perverse, and twice as hilarious.

The magically impossible sex is still there. The characters we love are still there (well... sort of... but I ain't saying nothing more about that), and the jokes are there, but don't think for a minute this is just another monster banging rehash. Fighters gives us a brand new expanded world, more plot (yes, that is right, erotic humor with PLOT!), and way more LOL and WTF moments than before.

And of course, we get to see more of my buddy, Roodg, in all Roodg's Roodgy glory, getting character development and everything!

3.5 of 5 stars – Some Adult Fun with Gaming.
[Thanks to the author and Goodreads' Don't Buy My Love program for a free copy in exchange for an honest review]

I love quirky gay fantasies, and this paralleled book 1 in a number of ways, including its creative, fun storyline and twists.

I again enjoyed C.B. Archer's writing about the adventure of one gamer (the elf Anders) and his teammates, heightened by a special headset allowing gamers to experience things physically, which was especially important for the sex. I'm not a gamer, but I liked how Archer gave me the feel of gaming. And I again enjoyed that this was an x-rated game, all be it not in a typical m/m romance way. So for some it might be offensive. For one, the elf had to use his cute bubble butt often to save his ass, so to speak. And while it was cleverly done, there were still many versions of monster sex.

I also liked the diverse set of characters, or should I say, avatars, that Archer presented, distinctive and humorously drawn. They got more screen time here, in one case almost too much so - Kray was even more irritating, leaving me wanting him to get his comeuppance, which was one of a number of ways Archer built the tension.

However, that tension took a while to build, and it was hard for me to get into the first half. It was slow, with not much of a journey yet, and then from there the story was rather longer than needed and repetitive. As in book 1, I thought there was not a strong enough pull, goal, conflict or antagonist (but he and his minions were around a bit more to give me a better sense of him).

If you missed book 1, I'd say that book 2 will work ok as a standalone. It was almost that for me, since I didn't remember much from reading the first one. Still, it helped to recall a little bit about this universe since in the beginning a few people and things were left unexplained when they were mentioned. (Or maybe that's just part of the gaming experience?).

All told, I enjoyed revisiting this humorous take on gaming, the quirky sex and fun characters.

What can I say about this book? It continues the ridiculously zany story begun in "Breakers of the Code." Having won in the previous book, Anders and his companions are rewarded by being allowed into a new gamescape before any other players. Only, well, things don't quite go as planned, and before they know it, they're battling Breaker and his minions, and stumbling over new players, right and left.

The sexed-up craziness continues to skirt the line between outrageous and outraging, as Anders becomes the sex candy of an evil dragon, takes on a whole group of gladiators, and does so many other crazy things that I can't even begin to enumerate them. An excessive focus on the sexual aspect of the story (which, admittedly, is extremely attention-grabbing), though, would miss the opportunity to comment on the deft use of dialogue for characterization, as in this hilarious exchange:

Kray: "Kay, I am so skinny! I'm so hot now."
Anders: "What, no, I mean look at your skin it is s--"
Kray: "I know, kay! I am so thin now."
Anders: "But you were allowed to change your appearance! Why wouldn't you put your flesh back on an--"
Kray: "I did change my appearance! I went from Body Type #1 (average) to (skinny), kay. Now I am extra super thin and hot."
Anders: "But you are a horrible flesh husk of a monste--"
"Kray: "Shut up already! You're just jealous because you made yourself even chubbier, kay. Why would you do that? You had a perfect opportunity to make yourself a proper weight for a gay elf and you made yourself even fatter."

The tension between Anders and Kray sparks some of the most side-splitting moments in the book. However, it isn't all sniping between the characters. There are several surprisingly tender love triangles developing that have quite caught my heart, and I am waiting with bated breath to find out who ends up with whom. As a non-gamer I was originally somewhat skeptical about this series, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance!

There's one thing CB Archer will never be and that's unoriginal. He never stops being hilarious and it never stops being refreshing. Sure, this and all the other books in this series/universe are ridiculous but that's part of their charm and that's why we love them. You'll just never read anything quite like a CB Archer book, and I mean that in the best possible way it can be taken.

More Anders! This was a fun continuation of "Breakers of the Code" with even more sexy RPG antics! My one issue was this one took a while to get to the plot (and the sexy fighting!)
Looking forward to the third installment!
