i don't think i really understand this book. it seems to be teaching children that people are going to be annoying throughout your life and there's really nothing you can do about it. which is an important one, as far as lessons go, but i think the author had a different goal; i just think it ended up being less effective than he thought it would be.

so there is this baby owl, and i'm pretty sure owls are nocturnal, and he's just strolling through the woods one night with his stuffed owl, minding his own business, and all these other animals keep popping out of the woods at him and saying "don't be scared!!", and baby owl is like - "no i'm just walking here, dude", and then more animals pop out and say - "it's late you should be in bed - don't be scared..." "i'm fine - just having a little walk"... like when that owl grows up he's not going to go back and eat that badger right off the bat.. he never seems scared, except on the cover drawing, where he looks a little shaken but its probably because all these stupid animals can't mind their own business and keep jumping out from behind bushes to tell him how he is feeling, like people who are in school for psychology and suddenly know everything about people's undiagnosed mental disorders. leave the owl alone, go back to your dens, let him have his stroll uninterrupted. jeez.

3 stars cuz the drawings are cute.

* * * Read to me by my niece Emma * * *

A little owl with his stuffed animal "Owly" go for a walk in the woods at night and well-meaning nocturnal folks like bats and badgers pop out from behind trees and whatnot, frightening the poop out of the poor little guy, to ask if he should be out at night. He's not scared, he reassures them, but they are scaring Owly! Cute stuff.

Emma plowed through I'm Not Scared! mostly with ease, hamming it up towards the end by reading in a sing-song voice. She didn't try to skip pages and nor did her attention wander. I quiet liked the big colorful pictures, and appreciate that now during reading time that's all I have to do...well, aside from occasionally correcting her.

This was somewhat light reading for Emma, who's heading into second grade. I'm no expert on the reading levels of kids these days (I'm still trying to figure out what this "AR" thing is), but I'd say this would be good for kids about halfway through with first grade. Again, don't quote me on that, but Emma whizzed through most of this, only stumbling over a larger word like "decided" or because her eyes are racing ahead of her mouth.

Jonathan Allen has crafted this interesting series about ‘not’ being something or other. When Baby Owl learns that he is a night-prowling predator, he is ready to seize the moment by taking his stuffy, Owly out on a night walk. Baby Owl is not tired and it is not past his bedtime. The dark is no unconquerable foe, nor are the creatures who lurk out there... at least until Baby Owl can no longer put up the facade. Luckily, Papa Owl is there to help and offer a reassuring hug, while Baby Owl still passes the fear off on Owly. Neo may not be afraid of the dark and finds himself to be staunchly independent, but he is still happy to turn to a parent when he feels the need for a cuddle. Thankfully, we have piles of books to tide us over and to give him wonderful thoughts as he stares down adversity.

I like the illustrations in this book. Sometimes that's all it takes for me to enjoy a picture book.

The first time I saw this book I knew it would be a hit for my storytime program (I really enjoyed it, too!) It's definitely something that children can identify with and the somewhat predictable nature and rhythm to the story makes it perfect for them to chime in.

I read it twice for two different programs for children between 3 and 5. I began by asking them if they were ever scared, and just like the book, some of them said "noooooooo!" I printed out pictures from Google of the supporting characters and held them up every time the next character "popped up," which they enjoyed. Out of all the books I read, "I'm not Scared!" and the first in the series, "I'm not Cute!," were the biggest hits.

Baby Owl is just chilling and going for a walk and everyone keeps telling him not to be scared. Poor thing is just tired of people telling him what to do. Fantastic illustrations and a fun story time read!

The main character is kind of annoying, so that makes this not as enjoyable as it could be. The illustrations are cute, but the story was just okay.

Baby Owl is taking a walk in the woods. He becomes frustrated at all the other animals because they all tell her not to be scared. She tells them she isn't afraid and that owls are supposed to be up all night. She explains that her stuffed toy, Owley is the one who is afraid. This is an adorable book for young children who love animals and maybe have small fears. This helps teach "little ones" that not all small things have nighttime fears.

Great book for use in Reception or early KS1. This book looks at how the dark can be scary and although people don't like to admit they are scared of the dark, it is okay to be scared. The latter part of this story shows the dad owl telling the baby owl this
This can send a strong message to the children as it is likely that some of most of them may have a fear of the dark and could be embarrassed about it.

The other thing that the story looks at and shows is some of the animals that come out at night. This can link strongly to science and introduce children to nocturnal animals.

Baby owl takes a moonlit walk through the woods. He's immediately set upon by a parade of other animals telling him not to be scared. He insists he's not, despite the continuous jump-scares.
I can see this one being super fun at storytime if you shriek every time a new animal pops up like they've just scared the dickens out of you. I shall have to give it a try.

Baby Owl decided to take his stuffy, Owly, for a night time walk. All the animals he met thought he was scared and that he shouldn't be out at night. Baby Owl tried to convince them that he is an owl who is supposed to be out at night - and he was not scared! When Papa Owl found him, everything was made better. Big illustrations and simply worded cute story.

Baby owl is taking a nighttime stroll with his stuffie, Owly, and he keeps being surprised by other animals. The other animals tell him not to be scared because it’s dark, late etc… Each time though he insists he is not scared because he is an owl and Owls are up all night in the dark.

I'm sure many parents have children like Baby Owl, who is very insistent he is not scared of the dark even when other animals suggest he is. I loved when he finally burst out, "It's what owls do!" 😄 Papa Owl knows how to set things right.

A book about being scared (or definitely NOT scared) of the dark. A cute simple story with some humor. It is sweet, but not saccharine.

This book is cute. I was scared of the dark when I was a kid, too. I think that this book is a good way to help young children realize that darkness isn't scary.

Tbh I think Baby Owl might be scared of the dark and is projecting his insecurities onto Badger, Bear and Bat.

A cute story about a baby owl who is totally not scared of the dark. Great as a read aloud, especially if you can pretend to be scared every time you turn a page.
