A collection of Flash Fiction pieces and Short Stories by award winning poet David Ellis that have been previously commercially published. They are mostly humorous, character driven pieces that will brighten your day, along with some more dramatic ones that will tug at your heartstrings. The first half contains Flash Fiction pieces that are heavy on engaging dialogue, along with being full of wit, humour with a handful of dramatic themes. They are all fast paced and laced with potential for future expansion. The second half of the book contains Short Stories which display a rich maturity in David's work and are imbibed with colourful descriptive language and characters.

Recently, I have begun reading short story collections from numerous authors. I am an avid reader of David Ellis’ poetry and short stories and A Little Bit of What You Fancy, is a unique and delightful collection of short stories. What always draws me into David’s writing is his imagination and British humor. Some of his stories made me snort in glee, and others had me contemplating the makings of the universe. That is one of this author’s writing characteristics. His prose makes you think.

One of my favorite flash fiction pieces is called, Think Before Choosing Pink. Infused between the author’s words is a paranormal twist that tickled my funny bone. If you have or had teenage daughters, you will understand my mirth. My almost forty-something daughter still loves skulls to this day!

Another story called, Late Bloomer, was filled with a pleasant aura of words and phrases that spun off my tongue in poetic splendor. The story begins with the following description:

“Dark coffee tinged clouds roll across the sky.”

And such is the strength of David Ellis’ storytelling methods. He transports you into his world. I can imagine sitting in a British Pub enjoying a half-pint while David entertains the crowd spinning his tales. After the laughter dies down, you are left with the knowledge that his stories are pure entertainment with a little bit of what you fancy. Now, where’s that bartender?

A wonderful, wistful, and sometimes humorous collection about the loss, sadness, lack in people's lives, and sometimes the joy - sometimes, all in the same piece. I enjoyed the vivid imagery such as the line, "...the cloak of darkness that enshrouds heavenly shoulders." The theme of magic and wonder is present in lines such as, "...realise the change from within. Now that's real magic." A Little Bit Of What You Fancy: A Short Story Collection is an unforgettable journey from flash fiction to short stories.
