The brutal Freshman Finals at Kings Dominion School of the Deadly Arts have created a new status quo. The Student Council has eliminated all its enemies and rules the halls with an iron fist. Into this shark tank comes a new class of kids, fresh blood for a fresh start.
There is Quan, a Vietnamese rockabilly, quick with his knives and a comb. Helmut, an East German metalhead with a hatred for communists. Zenzele, a hammer-swinging refugee of a brutal African civil war, and Tosahwi, a Native American skate punk with a whole nation’s history of violence to pay back.
And then there’s Saya, who alone of her group of friends survived the finals and who stands poised to become the school’s deadliest student. But when her dark past comes back to haunt her, will she ride the torrent of blood she’s unleashed or end up drowning in it?
It’s morning in America, and a new era of RICK REMENDER (Seven to Eternity, Black Science) and WES CRAIG’s (Black Hand Comics) DEADLY CLASS begins.
Rick Remender is an American comic book writer and artist who resides in Los Angeles, California. He is the writer/co-creator of many independent comic books like Black Science, Deadly Class, LOW, Fear Agent and Seven to Eternity. Previously, he wrote The Punisher, Uncanny X-Force, Captain America and Uncanny Avengers for Marvel Comics.
After the shocking (seriously shocking) carnage of the Freshman Finals at Kings Dominion School of the Deadly Arts; us regular readers now know how the School works so go into the this volume as Sophomores ourselves as the book follows nebies, Ethiopian Zenzele, she with the hammer; Vietnamese-American flirt Huang, he with the blades; Irish Cormac, he with the big mouth; and the superb East German metal-head Helmut. One of them is encumbered as a pledge for Saya, enter trouble. I thought the greatness of this book was finally subsiding when this volume began with (well written and drawn) groundwork on the new class, the sophomores and the dangers brewing outside the school; when it just blows up from around the middle, and it's all hi-octane plotting and art from then onwards! It's the ultra violence, ultra toilet humor, ultra 1980s retro and most of all the delicious plotting that makes this work so well (again). A 9 out of 12, Four Star read. 2022 read
Deadly Class remains one of the best series out there. Smart writing, well done art, and great pacing with a wonderful cast of characters.
Spoilers from volume 4 so don't read ahead if you aren't ready. Ready? READY!? Okay here we go. After Marcus and crew were murdered horribly I thought we might be in trouble. Killing compelling character's can be great and add to the story but then we got new characters and what if we don't like them?
Luckily we got a new cast of kids, all freshmen, and all well done. They collide with some old faces who fucking deserve to die so bad and makes for entertaining moments. I also love the German as he is both badass and awesome fighter. You get a interesting crew this time and more so they aren't as clean as you expect, but this is Deadly Class after all.
The big issue comes at the end. Enjoyable no doubt but kind of...expected? I guessed it the second the first few pages happened and it kind of made volume 4 less of an impact for me. Maybe it'll pick up once read next volume but it did let me down a little bit. We shall see.
Still, Deadly Class is top 10 ongoing comics you should be reading. Are you reading yet? NO? WELL WHAT THE FUCK GET ON IT!!!!
Prom, drugs, booze, politics, revenge, D&D, twists, and comebacks! Remender and team are killing it!
In volume 5 of this amazing series, Shabnam rises to power and commands much of the school, the freshmen class take the spotlight, and Saya is being hunted by samurai assassins. While many of the characters from previous volumes are gone (but not all of them!), the new characters are totally fascinating.
Unlike volume 4, which was exhausting nonstop action, this one allows me to catch my breath and have a look around. There's plenty of action, but it's heavily character-driven, more personable, funny, dark, with a plot gaining complexity. And I just loved every minute of it.
Gotta say, this is some of the best artwork coming out this year. Wes Craig is incredible. It's dark, moody, cartoony, and quite other-worldly. And would be nothing without Jordan Boyd's super neon coloring work. Seriously, give it up for the colorists, they make or break comic books.
FINALLY. Well…actually, I did read this volume as single issues as they were released because I honestly could NOT wait for this volume to be released after the way that volume 4 ended. This was the first time I had read individual issues of any comic before and it has definitely introduced me to the world of digital comics! Once the entire volume was released in paperback, you better believe I bought it and read the whole thing again. Ugh, this series is too good.

What I Liked
The new story. With the way that volume 4 ended, I really wasn’t sure if I was going to like the way that the new story arc was headed. We were going to be introduced to a new cast of characters and I wasn’t sure if I was ready for that, considering my love for the old ones. However, as you already know, Deadly Class is my favourite comic series of all time and I wasn’t about to stop reading it just because I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about the new story. Obviously I was totally wrong. I actually really enjoyed the new story arc and the new characters. I loved learning more about Saya’s family and it was interesting to see her interactions with the new freshman. Honestly, I don’t know why I was worried. This series can literally do no wrong.
The characters. As mentioned above, we were introduced to a whole cast of new characters within this new story arc. While I did miss the old characters, these new ones were a great addition to the story and I can’t wait to learn more about Quan, Helmut, Zenzele & Tosahwi and each of their personal back stories. I will mention that I have already read the newest issue that will kick off volume 6 and it dove right into the back story of Saya and I absolutely LOVED it. I really hope we get an in depth look into the other characters in the same way.
The shocks and twists. With any Deadly Class issue or volume, you always need to prepare yourself for some insane shocks and twists. However, no matter how much you try and prep yourself for something like that…it never really works. There were moments in this volume that I did not see coming at all. Funnily enough, I kind of predicted the ending…maybe not the way that happened, but I just knew that it had to happen eventually. However, there was a moment prior to the ending that I did NOT see coming and it took me completely off guard. It was amazing.
The ending. I mean honestly, I think we all wanted that ending!

What I Didn’t Like
What’s not to love? I loved everything about this volume, but I mean…is that really any surprise? It’s like this comic was made for me! It’s dark and violent, and I’m not sure what that says about me, but I absolutely LOVE it.

I don’t know how many times I will praise this series in the future, but just keep in mind that this is the best comic series I have ever read. I’m going to continue reading the single issues as they are released and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

Initial post-reading thoughts:
So. I just re-read this after reading the single issues and ugh it's just so good. I could read this series over and over and never get bored I swear to god. At first, I was a little hesitant about meeting some new characters, I'm not gonna lie....but I ended up really enjoying them. Because I am the person that I am, Tosahwi is probably my favourite new addition to this series as weird as that may sound. I know he isn't really liked by the others and that might be why I like him as much as I do. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout this volume...and ummm...that ending tho.
It's a new year in assassination school and I find myself not caring. Even though there's a focus on these new freshmen, we only get little tidbits about why they are there. I found myself forcing to continue in places. Then with the last issue we get the story I expected to see and found myself interested again.
Some childish humour has returned. A completely new set of 1st years or rats. Plotting was great but the ending was a little cliched. I did have a feeling something like that would occur. Still one of my fave series
Just a little update on the series up to this point: great twists and turns, a continued focus on character, and FINALLY we are beginning to uncover Saya's mysterious backstory.
A single complaint: the "new" class that is introduced in this arc slows down the pace of the story from the stunner at the end of volume 4. However, that change of pace ends up paying off with some killer action scenes and a slew of new characters I'm interested to follow in the next few issues.
Keep on keepin' on: this series continues to be one of my faves.
Better than the last Volume, but a tad predictable. That didn't make it any less enjoyable, though. I'm digging the new cast of characters, as well as the story's progression. Keep 'em comin'!!!
It's a new year at Assassination High School and that means a whole new crop of international freshmen for last year's survivors to kick around. Enter: --Quan, a wiseass Vietnamese greaser fan --Zenzele, an African born again Christian and very unlikely enrollee --Helmut, a Soviet-hating East German metalhead and D&D enthusiast --Tosahwi, a Native American skateboarder with a grudge against corrupt law enforcement.
The new kids settle in, the older characters jockey for power, and there's more violence than is reasonable even for an academy dedicated to the art of murder. ----------------------------- I'm not thrilled with the dramatic change in plot direction. It feels contrived, and if it indicates that Deadly Class intends to keep resetting its cast then I probably won't stick around for long. Even gangsters wouldn't send their kids to a school with a reliable 10% survival rate.
I'm also not a fan of the recycled TV tropes. Every character who dies offscreen comes back to life; every display of trust is met with cold, calculated betrayal. It's tiresome in its consistency.
But plot criticisms aside, on a moment-to-moment basis this is the best writing I've seen from Rick Remender. I can see why the composite rating for v5 spiked. The new characters are well defined with plausible motivations, and the dialogue is realistic and fun.
And Remender accomplished the inconceivable...he made me laugh at a fart joke. An unexpectedly articulate, hilariously verbose three-page fart joke, but a fart joke nonetheless. Never thought I'd see the day. ----------------------------- Plot points:
New characters are introduced. Just great. It's bad enough I haven't been able to connect to the original characters, but now I have to make new friends.
A change in perspective and tone makes for a different read.
World: The art is great, I love Scott's art, but I will say this and it's has always annoyed me when artists DON'T DO RESEARCH on street signs that are not English. There is Google translate, there are photos all over the web, IT'S NOT THAT HARD!!!! PLEASE DON'T GIVE US FAKE LINE FOR JAPANESE IT'S DISRESPECTFUL. The world building is fine, it's a departure from the huge previous arc and I love it. We get a new batch of students and this feels like Harry Potter, this is Year Two and we have new students coming in. There is a change in the status quo and the things that happen at the school are very interesting, the world building is superb.
Story: The story takes a turn I did not expect, it takes essentially a breather for the first couple of issues. We get to decompress after the really heavy last arc and we get fresh new faces and new voices, it's good. We see Kings Dominion and what happens after the rat hunt and we see those left and how they move on. It's quite good. As I said above, I loved the new points of view and the new students, they are fresh, they are new and they also allowed readers to look back and think, were Marcus, Willie, Maria, Saya this naive? It's good. The end of this arc is even better!
Characters: The new group of students I dig very much, especially Z, she's so different from the rest that I like what Remender is doing with her. This entire group is interesting. Seeing the second years and how they have changed is also great. I don't want to spoil anything, the characters are the best in this book. Read it!
I really liked the breather we got, it allowed us to decompress and take a step back to simply times (lol for this world at least) and realign readers for Year Two.
This was a really good installment. I loved that it followed Saya so closely. The new characters are great and liked being out of Marcus' head. Dude is depressing. The D&D part was kinda weird but fun.
‘’Being underestimated is a gift. It forces you to work harder, accomplish more.’’
I'm a creature of habit and struggle with the lack of OG characters and the addition of new ones. Not that the new ones are bad, they're alright and I'm sure I'll grow to enjoy them in later volumes, but I just miss all my OG babies.
The final part, or the ''epilogue'', was kickass though and I'm so excited now.
2.5/5 STARS I’m probably the only one who didn’t connect to this like I wanted based on the high ratings it received, but regardless of that, this remains one of my all time favorite graphic novel series as a whole.
New characters are introduced and more clever and unpredictable acts of betrayal resurface as a heart-stomping hunt begins. However, it's the final issue that really delivers the huge blow (in a positive way). I never saw it coming!
After the hell that was the last volume, this was a bittersweet volume to read. I like Saya. She's a complex character and she's badass af, but I just can't get over what she did. Seems like she's got a new set of problems though. The new characters introduced are interesting and pretty damn funny. They're also geeks, which I appreciate. Nothing wrong with a good game of D&D. Deadly Class still gets me laughing, still has amazing art, and still catches me by surprise.
This last portion will be me talking about the last issue in this volume, so spoilers.
Ok, I can't get enough of this series. Every time I think it's going to hit a rut BOOM the story keeps adding excellent plot. I did watch episode one of the TV series which was pretty good, nice representation of the characters. One thing I learned from this volume is that the covers have pretty big spoilers on them so I would suggest not looking at future volume covers if you don't want spoilers. This volume focuses more on plot and character development then just the murdering and violence in the past issue and I think that was a perfect thing to do. It allowed us readers to get more backstory and learn more about the school. Great issue!
(Zero spoiler review for the deluxe edition. Score for this volume) 4.5/5 I gotta admit, a few issues in, I was just a little bit worried about this one. Worried that my unflinching praise and sky high expectations were going to come back to haunt me. No., this wasn't the strongest opening in my opinion, with Remender putting all those things I loved about the first one to the side (how could he), and doubling down on just about everything I was glad this book wasn't. But hot damn did it slowly but surely redeem itself by the end. Now don't get m wrong, the start wasn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination. I wasn't about to throw the book across the room, burn it and delivery myself a swift and poorly executed lobotomy to remove the once pristine memory of this series from my mind. It was a little silly, a little goofy, and definitely less than impeccably executed, but it was Ok, I guess. It just wasn't as good as everything that proceeded it. But everything that proceeded it was pretty damn awesome, in my opinion, and thankfully, we soon found our way back to said awesomeness. There are quite a few twists and turns in this arc, which I will certainly not be spoiling, although one thing that isn't a spoiler, especially if you've read the first book, is how awesome Craig and Boyd's art is here. Few books so perfectly encapsulate the tone of the story, giving it a fresh, evocative and unique look as Deadly Class, but damnit it if those two aren't kicking goals again here. Remender's writing would be generally strong enough to carry even a shitty looking book, but thank god we don't have that book, we have a sumptuous feast for the eyes. If you aren't reading this, then what the hell is wrong with you? This sat on my shelf for two years before I cracked it open. I waited two weeks between books one and two. Not sure how long Ill go before book three makes an appearance. Don't dawdle any longer on one of the best Image titles out there. 4.5/5
It's a new year at Kings Dominion. The carnage of the last semester has been left behind as Master Lin welcomes a new batch of freshmen through the doors. Very few of the Sophomores have survived. The usual suspects; Viktor and co, are still as brutish as ever. Petra has completely rewritten herself after betraying Billy. The trauma of that getting to her more than she has let on. Saya however, just isn't the same. After losing Willy and Marcus, she has lost her spark but remains as Master Lin's protojay. Because of this, she is in trouble. And because of who she is, she's in trouble. Kings Dominion aren't messing around this year. That much is clear.
I loved being introduced to the new batch of suckers who are inevitably going to die pretty soon. I hope we get to see them for a while though before they all bite the dust. The good thing about this book is that Rick Remender and Wes Craig literally don't hold back on anything. There is no denying the man hunt that finished in Vol 4 was going to mess these kids up beyond repair. It's honestly hectic. I loved this so much.
When I first dipped into this one, I found myself a little disappointed, missing characters who died in the last volume. Saya is great, and the new freshmen are genuinely interesting, but I felt like the heart of the book may had been displaced with vol. 4's big end reveal. Then I got to issue 26, which was damn near a perfect comic book issue. Everything is fine. Deadly Class is still one of the best on the shelves. Carry on.
I'm so very happy right now! bursting with inordinate amounts of joy!
So... This is what a happy surprise feels like.
I like the new rats, Zenzele and German Thor are my favorite, and the angry native american -I'm really terrible with names, aren't I?- seems interesting. I low-key hope he and Zenzele become a thing.
The last issue was more than I could ever hope. I will forever miss and love Billy more than any other rat.
This is the first volume for which I have NO notes. Wow. Fantastic stuff.
The new characters are all really well fleshed out, and I love that we get to spend more time with each of them before jumping into some classic Deadly Class mayhem.
The twists? Bangers. The art? Killer. The characters? Choice.
The final issue of this one also made me HYPED for the next volume.
Five stars! Finally recommending this series with my full heart.
After an agonizing ending to Volume 4 this volume picks up and doesn't let up until the horribly, amazing, WTF ending!!!! I have to wait a whole year to learn what happens to the new class and some of the leftovers of the old class....ARGH!!!! I have already gone back and started this volume again....such a great one!
I was a little worried since this volume introduces & focuses on a completely new group of characters (with the exception of Saya.) But the new characters were fantastic & the story arc was excellent & this was without doubt my favorite volume so far. I'm glad I gave this series another shot because it has ended up becoming one of my all time favorites. Highly recommend!
