Many of us have read books on principles and techniques of management. I am not an exception. When I received the book, "When Change Happens…” my intuition said that this would be a different one altogether. I was right.

What is special about this book?

The book is on change management and some techniques around it, which the author (details about the author are shared at the end of this post) has focused on. What makes the book special is the author’s unique telling of an otherwise heavy and seemingly rigid subject, making the content more appealing, almost to the point of it being inspiring.

Yes. You read it right.

The book is a short novel in which the protagonist, Matt, takes the readers through his journey of organizational transformation, which he is assigned to deliver. I could connect with a few of Matt’s experiences. Been a banking professional plus a Subject Matter Expert, I could quite easily relate to some of my past experiences through the insights and learning that When Change Happens…offers to its readers.

Like many professionals, in my organization, too, we followed tactics like Sharing Best Practices, Teaming, One-on-One Mentoring and Side-by-Side Coaching; to name a few. Having said that, I found this book valuable as the author presents different concepts, those that many of us may not aware about.

On the surface, the story is a simple one. That of how Matt successfully transforms his organization, despite the many challenges he encounters. But the underlying gut of the story drives some important messages that has been meticulously bundled – those which will not only makes the narrative engaging but the concepts easy to comprehend and absorb. And might I say, even doable for professionals who are undergoing change in their organizations.

As a coach, the author has taken every effort, through his writing ability and his knowledge on the subject, to uncover processes that support a successful transformation program in an organization.

The book consists of 18 chapters; each with a well-depicted illustration, pertinent graphics, and thought provoking quotes and fully-loaded with practical lessons of change.

Anything more and this will become a spoiler. When Change Happens… is a necessary buy. With almost all companies experiencing change in today’s extremely unpredictable business environment, I see great value in its content.

When Change Happens.... As a layman it was refreshing to have read the core principles and practices of business practice in a fictional format. Engaging with Matt, the protagonist, is simple and easy. Realization that I have been using some of the principles in a non-business, government sector healthcare environment demonstrated the need for a structured approach beyond the realms of corporate world. Lalit Jagtiani's personal experiences shape both the narrative and content of the book making it an easy read and a highly recommended one. Congratulations to Lalit for adding a book that can act both as a reference text and as a fictional read.

Lalit Jagtiani’s ‘When Change Happens… A Story of Organisational Transformation’ came across as probably a text book, which I had always wanted, yet never saw. This book, talks of his own personal experiences and how he saw through each and every one of them. Filled with illustrations, of capturing a chapter in pictures, they all were excellently done.

Managing change and developing one’s business organisation is a work of skill and to have that happen in a series of small stories is what this book does. It begins with a young man, Matt at work and seemingly bored with doing the same thing every day.

It is not long, before he is called by his superior and a newer assignment is given to him. He is one of the 15 change agents, who would be responsible for the changes to be brought about in the organisation. He, along with his colleagues headed to the initiation and that is where the story begins.

The story goes around a central character, whose job it is to make over the organisation and his dealings within the establishment, which forms the rest of the story. We are put through ideas that need to be applied for any change to take place. The idea is to understand the organisational change and the tests that are hidden in them. How people have to deal with initial changes and how they can overcome them, by going through studies and their triumphs, is one of the ways of doing it right.

It is about the difficulties and challenges faced in an organisation. When we are presented with them, we might have to change and for that purpose, alteration becomes essential. For it, effective communication and the value of people who are going through the changes and also, examining the worst condition, if unexpected things occur are points, which have to be noted.

It is basically an instructional teaching, but which does not read like a lesson. It principally, flows through your head, and tells you many stories in one. A really well thought of and a brilliantly written work, is this book.

“WHEN CHANGE HAPPENS…A Story of Organisational Transformation” is a contemporary fiction by ‘Lalit Jagtiani’. Via its protagonist, Matt, the novel talks about bringing change and its management in the business organisation.

Change management is a core business concept, but a layman to this field, like me, was able to comprehend the meaning of the concepts involved. And all this because of the simplicity of the writing style of the author. The language used in the book is easy and the narration is fresh. The change management is mentioned in quite simpler terms throughout the book via different metaphorical incidents.

“When Change Happens”, in simpler terms, is a story of how Matt brings the change in his organisation tackling all the obstacles and adverse situations that came his way. Through this simple story, the author has penned down certain philosophical quotes too.

The effectiveness and ease of author’s writing are apparent from the very first page. Consider this random prose-

“… The tapping on his keypad droned on. Matt was drafting another meaningless letter to an equally meaningless individual, each performing a ‘meaningful’ role in their respective organisations- using the to-and-fro communication to justify their employment and their respective salaries.” Page- 2.

I loved the book cover; it depicts uniqueness and yet relatability as per the content of this book. The way Lalit has described the intro of certain scenes is quite commendable. Apparently, he does know how to write in a gripping way. We need more such books to raise the bar of Indian literature. The book has an interesting plot with a page turner recipe that can hook up a reader from cover to cover.

Through Matt, I learnt a lot of things related to management and business in simpler ways. Do you want to, too?

The story begins with Matt’s apprehensions over his ability to take responsibility and to be part of a small team designated to lead a process of change in his organisation. The book takes course further with him feeling confident and invigorated to be a change agent after a workshop on organizational transformation. The events that follow are a tale of his reflective actions that motivate him to take charge of this process successfully. It is a tale of both personal and organizational transformation.

Advocating the belief that personal goals need to be in alignment with institutional needs for individuals to take ownership of their work outcomes, the book takes the reader through various hurdles encountered by Matt in a team building process he undertakes along with a team of change agents. A section dedicated to understanding and dealing with the politics of change will be of special interest to practitioners who are often faced with resistance from those in positions of authority in an organisation.

When Change Happens through its first person reflective narrative style helps one to realise and understand the soft-skills one must use in dealing with people across the hierarchy of an organization. The benefits of acting patiently by biting one’s tongue for future gains even in situations where one is tempted to yell in anger at one’s senior has been explicated smoothly and effectively through the difficult positions Matt has to face.

Change is hard at the first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end”

~ Robin Sharma

Can any other expression of views define the flow of “Change” more beautifully than what is rendered by Mr Robin Sharma. I guess, nay!!!

But yes there is one more piece of art which has narrated the process of change in a very subtle and stirring manner. And that came from the mind of a very knowledgeable man who has written and compiled some of his experiences in the form of a book. And you can find that vivid description under the name “When Change Happens: A Story of Organisational Transformation” and the person of note is Mr Lalit Jagtiani.

The objectives behind introducing change in any organisation are channelizing positive spirits among the employees and narrowing down individual success to dovetail with collective achievements. This require guidance from some expert mentors who can use their experience in addressing complex challenges. The book lucidly narrates the story of Matt starting with uncertainty about the program in the beginning and ending with some firm concepts in his mind; a story from trainee to coach, from beginner to expert.

I definitely recommend this book as a must read.
